Michael Traill might just be the ultimate Good Investor. Growing up in a small mining town in Victoria he found himself co-founding Macquarie Group’s private equity business. After fifteen years at Macquarie and poised for higher honours within the bank, he took a radical u-turn and became founding CEO of Social Ventures Australia. Shortly thereafter he had a leading hand in rescuing ABC Learning’s Australian assets via not-for-profit enterprise Goodstart Learning. Now he is looking at establishing a new asset class in Australia - in scale. The aim is to generate acceptable financial returns but create positive social change at the same time. Find out what makes For Purpose Partners different, where Michael gets his sense of social justice from, what is next for the growing area of social infrastructure and what advice he received that spurred him on to run 10kms in less than 41 minutes as an 11 year in regional Victoria. Michael Traill is one of the founding-heroes of impact investing in Australia. He led a pioneering finance deal in 2009 which bought out the assets of the struggling child-care company ABC Learning. He revived the business as Goodstart Early learning, which remains Australia’s biggest child-care centre group. And a foundational story of impact investing in Australia. Since then the sector has grown, and last year the Federal government setup a taskforce to make recommendations about what they can do to help nurture impact investing. And in their wisdom, they made Michael the chair. The taskforce published an interim report at the end of 2019 and final recommendations were due to be released in the middle 0f 2020. But covid-19 put a spanner in the works, and the report’s been delayed. So, with lots of my listeners eager to hear about progress, I thought now would be a great time to invite Michael onto the show. As usual all the show notes are on my website at www.Johntreadgold.com Enjoy

Elyse Sainty works at the intersection of social impact and finance, which is the sweet-spot of this show. She’s director of Impact Investing at Social Ventures Australia (SVA) where she designs and manages Social Impact Bonds, and her take on this was really refreshing, from her perspective, It’s not really about investors… instead, it’s seeing capital as an enabler, it’s the means to an end. And really, when you look at the central goal, it’s not about making money, it’s about making money make a difference. Elyse delves into her transition from banking and finance to working in the social sector. And she talks about the genesis of SVA when the team saw an opportunity, in the collapse of the ABC-Learning child-care business, to refashion its assets into a social enterprise that today is doing well in the form of Goodstart Early Learning. This is a great episode for anyone confused about Social Impact Bonds and their unique way of bringing together government funding, investors and service providers. But for those in the sector, Elyse has some really valuable philosophies about the mission and the potential for social finance going forward. Pastor Rus Says: Welcome to the sermon podcast for the week of March 26th, 2017 from 1st Lutheran with Pastor Rus Yoak. This last Sunday we welcomed our Day Care Center from 1st Lutheran, ABC Learning center, to come and worship with us. For this Sunday we looked at the blessings...and danger of youth ministry. Matthew 19:13-15 The Little Children and Jesus 13Then people brought little children to Jesus for him to place his hands on them and pray for them. But the disciples rebuked them. 14Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” 15When he had placed his hands on them, he went on from there. As always if you enjoyed the podcast please subscribe, share, and comment. Thanks lots. Pastor Rus
If any area of social policy deserves the label, "never-ending-story", it is childcare in Australia. Once the province of community-based providers, from the late eighties childcare gradually became broadly privatised under both Labor and Coalition governments. Recurring questions of standards and improved childcare quality were largely pushed to the background. Using tax-funded subsidies and contemporary corporate practices, ABC Learning and other companies took off, flew high and crashed. Despite soothing rhetoric from the Rudd government, the fall-out threatens to hamper more progressive policies and on-the-ground quality childcare for quite a while. As the global financial crisis tightens its grip, childcare and family policy researcher, Professor Deborah Brennan (UNSW) discusses the story so far, and the likely next moves, with Peter Clarke. This podcast is part of the "Inside Story" series.
