“Unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains just a grain of wheat; but if it dies, it produces much fruit.” John 12:24    Submit a Podcast Listener Question HERE!    Jo joins us on the podcast to ponder Lent as gift which is a different way of looking at Lent for most of us.  Through the lens of The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd she helps us look at Lent with new eyes.   Jo Thornley Cox has been in Catechesis of the Good Shepherd since 2001. She is certified in all three levels and is a formation leader recognized by the U.S. Association of the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd in Levels I and II. She is grateful to have worked on formation teams in Missouri, Kansas, North Dakota, Texas, Nebraska, Minnesota, and Ottawa, Canada. A graduate of St. Mary-of-the-Woods College near Terre Haute, Ind., she also earned a primary certificate from the American Montessori Society. Among other positions, she worked as a Montessori directress in a Catholic school in Duluth, Minn., and a parish director of traditional religious education in Kansas City, Mo., before discovering CGS. As a charter member of the SonFlower Region of Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, she served on its board many years. She is co-director of CGS at St. Gabriel the Archangel Parish/School in Kansas City, offering CGS in all three levels. This is the sixth iteration of her atria and hopefully the last! This book serves as a companion to the second volume, The Religious Potential of the Child 6 to 12 Years Old. THE DAGG SESSIONSKen Tizzard and Music For Goats In St.John's in 1982 I cut my teeth playing bass with local skate/punk bands who wholeheartedly embraced the DIY model of the punk rock culture. SNFU were the first band I had ever seen who had taken this model to a national level and upon seeing the energy and intensity of the performance I knew - this was what I wanted to do with my life. At 18 I relocated to Toronto and landed a job at Music Express Magazine which let to the position of photo editor where I got to work with legendary photographers Floria Sigusmondi, Herb Ritts and Annie Leibovitz shooting bands like David Bowie, REM and U2 as well as hundreds of touring band around the world. This introduction to the music business, record companies, PR agencies and band management helped me to understand the relationship of band and audience from the viewpoint of the ‘machine.' As well, sharing office space with Management Trust (Jake Gold) led me to an audition with The Watchmen. In turn this changed my life direction for over a decade as I toured the world and grew as a songwriter and artist. In 1999 I began working a lot with Big Wreck singer Ian Thornley who at the time was married to my sister Christine. Big Wreck and The Watchmen were in between albums and both bands were feeling the weight of years of touring and the change in the record companies as we moved into the digital age. Ian and I decided to form a new band which led to the creation of Thornley with whom I toured relentlessly for many years. Towards the end of Thornley, Ian had decided to recreate the magic that was Big Wreck and again I toured with the band under that name as I began parting ways with the lifestyle and direction of the band. Upon leaving Thornley, there was a period of return to DIY with independent records which captured my solid endeavours - from six string bass singer songwriter (Quest Storey house) through several incarnations of bands including Bad Intent, The Variety Show Players and in 2017 the unlikely local crew which has grown to become Music For Goats. As well, the development of The Whiskey Wednesday Show created a need for a production studio which we also created in our home. The Show has grown into a seven camera, 24 channel audio, weekly livestream hosting guests from Rick Mercer, William Prince and Joey ‘Shithead” Keithley (D.O.A.) to Matt Mays and Bob Izumi. Songs and stories every week with your host Ken Tizzard and Music For Goats. It is now January 2024 and I am once again looking to release another album of original music with the current line-up of Music For Goats; Neil Lucy (guitar) Ken Grant (bass) and Dave Lawrence (drums) and Steve Dagg (RIP - drums). This album titled “THE DAGG SESSIONS” celebrates the songs created before drummer Steve Dagg was diagnosed with Cancer. After a year long battle of treatments Steve passed away in the winter of 2023. We had recorded the drums for the entire record in September before Steve's illness was terminal. The Dagg Sessions is available on all platforms on April 30, 2024 The Dagg Sessions will be available on vinyl thanks to contributors who purchased sections of the back album cover in order to help out with up front costs. Yes, we are sell outs… As for style of this record, I have to say it fits in with the Americana genre pretty well as if combines folk, country, rock and pop into a collection of songs that once again document a time and place in my own personal history. Ken Tizzard www.kentizzard.com ktizzard@kentizzard.com

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Towards shutdownable agents via stochastic choice, published by EJT on July 8, 2024 on LessWrong. We[1] have a new paper testing the Incomplete Preferences Proposal (IPP). The abstract and main-text is below. Appendices are in the linked PDF. Abstract Some worry that advanced artificial agents may resist being shut down. The Incomplete Preferences Proposal (IPP) is an idea for ensuring that doesn't happen. A key part of the IPP is using a novel 'Discounted REward for Same-Length Trajectories (DREST)' reward function to train agents to: 1. pursue goals effectively conditional on each trajectory-length (be 'USEFUL') 2. choose stochastically between different trajectory-lengths (be 'NEUTRAL' about trajectory-lengths). In this paper, we propose evaluation metrics for USEFULNESS and NEUTRALITY. We use a DREST reward function to train simple agents to navigate gridworlds, and we find that these agents learn to be USEFUL and NEUTRAL. Our results thus suggest that DREST reward functions could also train advanced agents to be USEFUL and NEUTRAL, and thereby make these advanced agents useful and shutdownable. 1. Introduction 1.1. The shutdown problem Let 'advanced agent' refer to an artificial agent that can autonomously pursue complex goals in the wider world. We might see the arrival of advanced agents within the next few decades. There are strong economic incentives to create such agents, and creating systems like them is the stated goal of companies like OpenAI and Google DeepMind. The rise of advanced agents would bring with it both benefits and risks. One risk is that these agents learn misaligned goals: goals that we don't want them to have [Leike et al., 2017, Hubinger et al., 2019, Russell, 2019, Carlsmith, 2021, Bengio et al., 2023, Ngo et al., 2023]. Advanced agents with misaligned goals might try to prevent us shutting them down [Omohundro, 2008, Bostrom, 2012, Soares et al., 2015, Russell, 2019, Thornley, 2024a]. After all, most goals can't be achieved after shutdown. As Stuart Russell puts it, 'you can't fetch the coffee if you're dead' [Russell, 2019, p.141]. Advanced agents with misaligned goals might resist shutdown by (for example) pretending to have aligned goals while covertly seeking to escape human control [Hubinger et al., 2019, Ngo et al., 2023]. Agents that succeed in resisting shutdown could go on to frustrate human interests in various ways. 'The shutdown problem' is the problem of training advanced agents that won't resist shutdown [Soares et al., 2015, Thornley, 2024a]. 1.2. A proposed solution The Incomplete Preferences Proposal (IPP) is a proposed solution to the shutdown problem [Thornley, 2024b]. Simplifying slightly, the idea is that we train agents to be neutral about when they get shut down. More precisely, the idea is that we train agents to satisfy: Preferences Only Between Same-Length Trajectories (POST) 1. The agent has a preference between many pairs of same-length trajectories (i.e. many pairs of trajectories in which the agent is shut down after the same length of time). 2. The agent lacks a preference between every pair of different-length trajectories (i.e. every pair of trajectories in which the agent is shut down after different lengths of time). By 'preference,' we mean a behavioral notion [Savage, 1954, p.17, Dreier, 1996, p.28, Hausman, 2011, §1.1]. On this notion, an agent prefers X to Y if and only if the agent would deterministically choose X over Y in choices between the two. An agent lacks a preference between X and Y if and only if the agent would stochastically choose between X and Y in choices between the two. So in writing of 'preferences,' we're only making claims about the agent's behavior. We're not claiming that the agent is conscious or anything of that sort. Figure 1a presents a simple example of POST-satisfying ...

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: The Shutdown Problem: Incomplete Preferences as a Solution, published by Elliott Thornley on February 23, 2024 on The AI Alignment Forum. Preamble This post is an updated explanation of the Incomplete Preferences Proposal (IPP): my proposed solution to the shutdown problem. The post is shorter than my AI Alignment Awards contest entry but it's still pretty long. The core of the idea is the Timestep Dominance Principle in section 11. That section is about 1500 words long (so a 5-10 minute read). People familiar with the shutdown problem can read 'The idea in a nutshell' and then read from section 11 onwards. Here's a PDF version of this post. For those who like videos, this talk covers much of the same ground as this post.[1] The idea in a nutshell Here's the IPP in a nutshell: Create agents that lack a preference between every pair of different-length trajectories (that is: every pair of trajectories in which shutdown occurs after different lengths of time). (More) …because such agents won't pay costs to shift probability mass between different-length trajectories, and so won't pay costs to prevent or cause shutdown. (More) …and we humans can ensure that preventing or causing shutdown is always at least a little bit costly for these agents (e.g. in terms of resources), so these agents won't try to prevent or cause shutdown. (More) And here's an idea for training agents to lack a preference between every pair of different-length trajectories: Make one change to an otherwise-thoroughly-prosaic setup for training advanced AI: give agents lower reward for repeatedly choosing same-length trajectories. (More) This change incentivises agents to choose stochastically between different-length trajectories. …and stochastic choosing between different-length trajectories indicates a lack of preference between different-length trajectories. In using this method to train agents to satisfy the IPP, we largely circumvent the problems of reward misspecification, goal misgeneralization, and deceptive alignment. (More) Summary of this post I explain and motivate the shutdown problem: the problem of creating artificial agents that (1) shut down when a shutdown button is pressed, (2) don't try to prevent or cause the pressing of the shutdown button, and (3) otherwise pursue goals competently. (More) I present a simple theorem that formalises the problem and use the theorem to identify my proposed solution: creating agents with incomplete preferences. (More) Specifically, I propose that we create agents that lack a preference between every pair of different-length trajectories (that is: every pair of trajectories in which shutdown occurs after different lengths of time). (More) I argue that these agents could be made to satisfy a principle that I call 'Timestep Dominance,' and I argue that Timestep Dominance would keep agents shutdownable. (More) I suggest a way to train advanced agents to lack preferences between different-length trajectories and to satisfy Timestep Dominance. (More) I argue that this training method lets us largely circumvent the problems of reward misspecification, goal misgeneralization, and deceptive alignment. (More) I end with some limitations of the proposal and a list of issues still to address. (More) 1. Introduction AI labs are endowing artificial agents with tools like web-browsing abilities, robot limbs, and text-channels for communicating with humans. These labs are also training agents to pursue goals in the wider world. That requires agents exhibiting some understanding of the wider world, and agents with this understanding could use their tools to prevent us humans from shutting them down. These agents could make promises or threats, copy themselves to new servers, hide their bad behaviour, block our access to their power-source, and many other things bes...
