If you’ve lived in New Orleans for any length of time, you know we love to rebuild. We rebuilt the levees. We rebuilt the schools. We rebuilt the Superdome. After every storm, we rebuild thousands of roofs and hundreds of homes. After Hurricane Katrina, a small group of New Orleanians decided that the way they could make a contribution toward saving the city was to help build companies. They revived a small volunteer-run organization called Social Entrepreneurs of New Orleans. Three years later they turned it into a registered non-profit and gave it a new name. They called it, “Propeller.” The idea was - Find people in New Orleans who had identified a problem in their community and were trying to build a business or nonprofit to fix it. Get these folks in a room. Teach them how to read a balance sheet, how to apply for a grant, how to write a marketing plan, how to hire a bookkeeper. Then turn them loose. It worked. Today, Propeller is a business accelerator and co-working space that has seen more than 300 ventures go through its program. Those companies have generated over $290 million in revenue and external financing, and they’ve created more than 485 full and part-time jobs in the city. The CEO of Propeller is Jessica Allen. If you happened to watch HGTV in 2024, you may have caught a series called “Bargain Block: New Orleans.” It was a New Orleans spinoff of HGTV’s Detroit-based home renovation show. The two hosts had design ambitions. The person on the show who turned those ambitions into actual buildings, walls, and floors was a New Orleans general contractor named Charles Aponza. Charles came to New Orleans in 2012 to teach in the Recovery School District. He bought a fixer-upper, restored it himself, and then friends started asking him to help with their houses. In 2015 he turned his home building skills into a business - Brighter Horizons Construction. Charles and Brighter Horizons came up through Propeller’s Impact Accelerator. Then there’s the other side of what comes out of Propeller. A nonprofit. In 2014, Kimberly Novod and her husband Aaron were expecting their first child. Their son Saul was born prematurely at 28 weeks. He spent 20 days in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. He died there. Kimberly has said publicly that the question she was left with was, “What do I do with all the love?” Her answer was Saul’s Light – a New Orleans nonprofit she founded to support NICU families and bereaved families across Louisiana. Today, Saul’s Light serves around 200 Louisiana families a year.Beyond emotional support, they provide financial assistance. And as an advocacy group, Saul’s Light has produced two Louisiana state laws – a tax credit for stillborn children, and a requirement that health insurance, including Medicaid, cover prescription human milk. There’s a tendency, when we talk about business in New Orleans, to default to conversations about tourism, hospitality, Jazz Fest, Mardi Gras… The fun stuff. We don’t hear so much about the social justice economy: people who are building businesses and organizations to fix things that are broken. At Propeller they put that work at the center of their existence. Charles came up through Propeller and grew a construction business that builds homes New Orleanians can actually afford. Kimberly came up through Propeller and built an organization that helps 200 families a year go through one of the hardest things a person can experience. As in music, sometimes in business the silence is as powerful as the conversation. Out to Lunch was recorded live over lunch at Columns in Uptown New Orleans. Send us Fan MailOn any given night, more than 750,000 people are homeless in America - but that number doesn't even begin to tell the full story.Today's conversation sits at the intersection of advocacy, lived experience, and storytelling - because ending homelessness isn't just a policy challenge, it's a human one.Our first guest, Donald Whitehead Jr., is one of the leading voices in the fight to end homelessness in America. As Executive Director of the National Coalition for the Homeless ( https://nationalhomeless.org/ ), he brings more than 25 years of frontline and leadership experience across housing, recovery, and social services. But Donald's work is also deeply personal - having experienced homelessness and addiction himself, he now helps shape national policy, elevate lived voices, and push for a more equitable system rooted in dignity and justice.Joining him is Valerio Zanoli ( https://www.valeriozanoli.com/ ), an award-winning filmmaker and social entrepreneur who believes cinema can be a force for change. His latest documentary, HOMELESS ( https://homelessdocumentary.com/ ), goes beyond statistics to humanize the experience of homelessness - exploring the stories, dreams, and resilience of people too often overlooked. The film has already been featured at global forums and praised for its emotional depth and social impact ( https://buffalo8.com/project/homeless/ ).Together, they represent two powerful lenses on the same issue: one from the front lines of advocacy and systems change, the other from behind the camera - shaping how the world sees and understands homelessness.Let's Make a Difference Project - www.letsmakeadifference.info#Homelessness #HousingCrisis #EndHomelessness #SocialImpact #DocumentaryFilm #HousingFirst #PublicPolicy #AffordableHousing #MentalHealthAwareness #EconomicInequality #LasVegas #UrbanCrisis #NonprofitLeadership #StorytellingForChange #HumanStories #SocialJustice #Inequality #HomelessInAmerica #PolicyDebate #ImpactFilmSupport the show
Sam Fankuchen shares his personal journey, beginning with a dramatic close call on 9/11 that profoundly influenced his career path. This pivotal moment led him to recognize the complexities and barriers within volunteerism, inspiring him to create Golden. The company aims to streamline the process for both volunteers and organizations, leveraging AI to match individuals with meaningful opportunities and enhance program efficiency. Sam Fankuchen also discusses the role of social entrepreneurship and his optimistic view on AI's potential to uplift human quality of life despite its inherent risks. Chapters: 03:10 9/11 and Its Impact on Sam Fankuchen and his Family Sam shares his dramatic personal experience on 9/11, where his family narrowly avoided being on a hijacked flight due to a last-minute change. This event profoundly shaped his perspective, leading him to pursue meaningful work and social entrepreneurship, including his later response to other disasters like the Los Angeles wildfires and COVID-19. 12:50 The Challenges of Volunteering Sam discusses his frustration with the complicated and often unwelcoming process of volunteering in his youth, where organizations often created barriers instead of facilitating engagement. He highlights how many nonprofits viewed volunteers as a burden, leading him to realize the need for a more streamlined and meaningful approach to volunteer engagement. 19:50 Golden: Leveraging AI for Service Sam details Golden's mission to facilitate "golden moments" through acts of service by providing technology, including AI, to personalize and track volunteer opportunities. He explains how Golden offers both free and paid software solutions for individuals and organizations, enabling them to make data-driven decisions and uplift quality of life for everyone. 27:50 AI Optimism and Educated Bravery Sam expresses his strong optimism about AI, acknowledging its risks but emphasizing its potential for positive impact and the inevitability of its integration into society. He champions an approach of "educated bravery," encouraging people to embrace and learn from new technologies rather than fear them, highlighting the benefits for diverse learners and the broader human experience. 35:05 The Future of Social Entrepreneurship Sam discusses the evolving landscape of social entrepreneurship, stressing the importance of specific problem-solving and demonstrating tangible value over abstract notions of 'doing good.' He highlights Golden's commitment to supporting organizations, including a $500 million software license donation, and expresses optimism for the future of mission-driven work through rapid experimentation and technology adoption.

Today, they're achieving that vision at scale by empowering artisans in developing economies to sell their handmade goods directly to consumers. Since its launch over 20 years ago, NOVICA has sent over $142 million to more than 10,000 global artists.“We wanted to figure out a better way [for artisans] to access the market,” Roberto explained. “We built a system around being close to the artists through these Artisan Empowerment Hubs.”These hubs—located in countries like Bali, Brazil, Peru, and Guatemala—allow artisans to set their own prices, access 0% interest microcredit, and retain control over their creations. The model also preserves cultural heritage by sustaining endangered art forms while fostering economic independence for artisans, many of whom are women supporting families in their communities.Roberto's personal connection to this mission is rooted in his family history. “My grandmother on my Peruvian side was an artisan,” he shared, revealing his understanding of the challenges talented creators face. Artists are often geographically distant from buyers and hampered by middlemen, leading to slim profits despite their valuable craftsmanship. NOVICA addressed this gap by restructuring supply chains and creating digital tools to remove barriers for artisans. Now, NOVICA is raising capital for its next phase of growth by broadening investor participation through a StartEngine campaign. On the platform, anyone—not just accredited investors—can invest in NOVICA for as little as $300. Investors also gain perks like discounts or elevated customer status on NOVICA's website. “It's almost like democratizing on the investment side,” Roberto said, emphasizing how the crowdsourcing model aligns with the company's mission.Driven by their success, Roberto and his team recently launched Handmade.com, a complementary marketplace that leverages AI to help artisans manage their own product listings, allowing NOVICA to scale globally.“We're eyeing the $100 million mark,” Roberto shared. “With Handmade.com and other innovations, we're positioned to grow quickly while staying true to our mission.”By building solutions that uplift global artisans, NOVICA demonstrates how social entrepreneurship can make a lasting difference—preserving culture, creating livelihoods, and connecting communities.tl;dr:NOVICA empowers artisans globally, sending them $142 million via artist hubs in 10 countries.Roberto Milk's family connection inspired the creation of NOVICA to disrupt traditional supply chains.NOVICA is scaling through a StartEngine campaign, allowing anyone to invest for as little as $300.Handmade.com expands NOVICA's mission by using AI to help artisans self-manage product listings.Roberto credits “channeling empathy” as key to overcoming obstacles and driving social impact success. How to Develop Channeling Empathy As a SuperpowerWhen asked about his superpower, Roberto identified the ability to “channel empathy” as the key skill that drives his success. “The process of building a social impact company is really hard,” he explained. “Channeling empathy...has helped us push through and succeed because there was no plan B.”Empathy is at the heart of the NOVICA model. By deeply listening to artisans' struggles, needs, and dreams, Roberto and his team designed solutions that respect their craft, such as creating empowerment hubs that treat artists like “queens or kings.” These hubs provide not only financial tools like microcredit but also dignity, collaboration, and access to global markets, enabling artisans to thrive. One artisan, Leoncio Tinoco, an award-winning master weaver from Peru, struggled to make a living despite his expertise. NOVICA commissioned him to create a stunning tapestry depicting the iconic Afghan refugee girl from a National Geographic cover. The project brought Leoncio much-needed income and connected him with global recognition. The finished piece now resides at National Geographic's headquarters, symbolizing the power of empathy to change lives.Tips for Developing Empathy as a Strength:Listen Intentionally: Take extra time to fully understand others' words, emotions, and perspectives before responding.Practice Awareness: Be open to inspiration from conversations, meetings, or everyday experiences.Focus on Impact: Prioritize solutions that help others thrive while preserving dignity and culture.Build Relationships: Collaborate with individuals as partners in shared success, not just as contributors to your goals.By following Roberto's example and advice, anyone can make channeling empathy a skill. With practice and effort, this could become a superpower that enables greater impact in the world.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. You do you!Guest ProfileRoberto Milk (he/him):Co-founder & CEO, NOVICA & Handmade.comAbout NOVICA & Handmade.com: NOVICA is an established, mission-driven leader in the global artisan marketplace, with over $20M in revenue and global infrastructure already in place. How can you expect to change the world if you are constantly running on an empty tank?Social impact work is inherently heavy, but lately, that weight feels even more intense for many founders. Between massive federal funding cuts, the rapid acceleration of AI, and a general sense of global uncertainty, change-makers are finding themselves at the brink of burnout. It is a rational response to an irrational world, but it creates a dangerous paradox: the people most committed to helping others are often the ones neglecting themselves the most.Prioritizing your own mental health isn't a retreat from the mission; it is a prerequisite for it. Just like the oxygen mask analogy on an airplane, you have to be grounded and healthy to hold space for the challenges others are facing. Whether it is through morning journals, finding space to recharge, or reconnecting with nature, these self-care pillars provide the resilience needed to stay in the game. Real change happens when we move out of isolation and back into community, sharing our vulnerabilities authentically and remembering that we do not have to solve the entire puzzle alone.Episode in a glance00:00 The Importance of Emotional Well-Being01:53 The impact of recent federal funding cuts04:56 Navigating AI anxiety and rapid change08:54 Why your well-being is a core business metric14:15 Moving from a downward spiral to a grounded state17:13 Five pillars for maintaining daily resilience19:59 Finding community in social impact masterminds24:33 Prioritizing Well-Being for Greater ImpactAre you feeling the weight of the work? Social entrepreneurs supported by Social Entrepreneurs Ireland are up to 50 per cent more likely to succeed than those without our backing. That's according to Social Entrepreneurs Ireland, as it opens its Ideas Academy and Impact Programme for applications. Since 2004, the not-for-profit has supported over 630 social entrepreneurs across the country who are driving solutions in areas such as mental health, housing, the environment and education. Speaking at the launch of this year's programme, which remains open until 20th April, Director of Development at Social Entrepreneurs Ireland, Michelle Noone, said: "We know the impact that our programmes have on people and communities across the country, and in 2025, an independently verified report demonstrated how Social Entrepreneurs Ireland contributes to the success and growth of social enterprises across Ireland, with employment, sales, and future funding increased by up to 50 per cent and innovation boosted by up to 80 per cent. "There is a wealth of incredible ideas out there, and we encourage budding social entrepreneurs and those with more established solutions to social issues to apply for our Ideas Academy and Social Impact programmes, to bring their concepts to the next level." The Ideas Academy is a three-month programme designed to provide budding social entrepreneurs with the knowledge and tools needed to move from a concept to a tangible pilot. The Impact Programme is a nine-month programme that supports experienced social entrepreneurs to scale up tried-and-tested solutions to tackle Ireland's biggest social challenges. Programme participants receive mentorship and peer support. Impact Programme alumnus and internationally recognised designer, Kim Mackenzie-Doyle, founded The B!G Idea to prepare young people for the fastest-changing world in history. The free all-Ireland programme bridges classrooms and industry, equipping thousands of students with creative problem-solving skills, mentors, and confidence to turn their challenges into opportunities, shaping their futures and those of society. Carlow-based Mackenzie-Doyle said: "With The B!G Idea, I saw an opportunity to support young people right now, while fostering and developing the next generation of social entrepreneurs in the longer term. "Social Entrepreneurs Ireland has been invaluable in developing The B!G Idea, from the tailored mentoring, expert training and financial support received from the Impact Programme in 2022, through to my current participation in another Social Entrepreneurs Ireland programme. "Anyone who has a vision and can demonstrate the impact of their idea should consider applying for The Impact Programme." Social Entrepreneurs Ireland has partnered with energy company DCC plc since 2011. Since the partnership began, Social Entrepreneurs Ireland has received over 3,500 applications from all across Ireland. Donal Murphy, Chief Executive Officer at DCC plc, said "DCC plc is proud to support Social Entrepreneurs Ireland again in 2026. Over 660 social entrepreneurs have been directly supported over the duration of the partnership. In addition, Social Entrepreneurs Ireland alumni have created 463 jobs and generated €39.8m in income, so we know that this partnership works! "We look forward to helping this year's successful applicants to develop and refine their ideas to affect positive change across Irish society." Greetings Glocal Citizens! This week in our continuing Women's Herstory Month series, we're in another new country--from southern Africa last week we're landing in Scandinavia on our first trip to Norway via Sudan, Zambia, The Philippines, Netherlands, Ghana and South Africa--all places my guest this week has called home. Sarah Osman is a cognitive psychologist, global development specialist, and social entrepreneur with twenty years of experience across Europe, Africa, and Asia. Born in Khartoum, Sudan, and shaped by a life lived across multiple continents, she has built her career at the intersection of applied behavioral science and international development, helping major organizations translate insights about human decision-making into programs that create lasting social change. As the founder of Osman Advisory Services, Sarah has worked with international organizations such as the Council of Europe, World Vision, and the Inter-Parliamentary Union on some of the most complex behavioral challenges in global development. In 2024, she founded Ela, a membership community for women of color building their own consulting practices. Ela is grounded in the conviction that structural inequity in the consulting sector cannot be solved by individual effort alone: it requires community, peer accountability, and the kind of behavioral design thinking that Sarah has spent two decades applying in the field. Ela members are already experiencing tangible transformation in how they position themselves and grow with confidence. Sarah is currently building a new platform for Africa-focused professionals who want to harness the power of behavioral and consumer insights in their work and sector. Currently based in Oslo, Sarah is a true ‘glocal' citizen: Sudanese by heritage, Pan-African by spirit, European by dwelling, and wholly at home in the space between local realities and global systems. Ihr seid bei „On the Way to New Work“ – heute mit Dr. Julia Freudenberg.
In this episode of Women of Color Rise, I speak with Gloria Lee—Social Entrepreneur, Lecturer at UC Berkeley and Stanford, and visionary behind a new venture focused on helping elders thrive while aging in place. A seasoned educator and nonprofit leader, Gloria's career includes Founder, CEO of Educate78, President and COO of New Schools Venture Fund, and Area Superintendent and COO of Aspire Public Schools. Gloria didn't just dream about traveling the world with her husband and two sons—she made it happen. In our conversation, she shares how she turned this bold vision into reality. Leverage career transitions: When her nonprofit reached a natural inflection point, Gloria chose not to leap into her next role right away. Instead, she seized the moment to make their family travel dream a reality. Make it financially possible: Renting out their Bay Area home and choosing more affordable destinations meant their year abroad cost less than staying home. Mindful spending made the dream sustainable. Think about the long-term impact: Rather than focusing on reasons not to go, Gloria envisioned how the experience could strengthen their family—and it did. They returned with deeper bonds and shared memories that will last a lifetime. Support your children's growth: Gloria's introverted sons embraced “worldschooling” instead of traditional homeschooling. They returned with more gratitude, broader perspectives, and even a newfound passion for environmental conservation. Gloria's story is a reminder that we can make space for both impact in our work and dreams that feed our souls. Sometimes, the bravest career move is to step away and explore the world—with the people you love most. The impact of this support is significant. In the past year alone, organisations on the Impact Programme reported an 88% average income growth, collectively reached almost 5,000 beneficiaries, and 100% launched or piloted new services or expanded geographically. SEI has announced the five awardees of the Impact Programme 2025 Cormac Noonan, Sarah Naylor McNamee, Gareth Conlon, Matthew McCann and Ciara Mangan. They will share €100,000 in funding and up to €150,000 in pro-bono support to scale their impact The Impact Programme 2025 Awardees Matthew McCann, founder of Access Earth - Developing SPACES, a smart, inclusive parking system using real-time enforcement technology and data insights to combat misuse of accessible parking bays and improve infrastructure for people with disabilities. Sarah Naylor McNamee, founder of Beauty Business in a Box - A practical training programme empowering women and girls with accredited beauty skills, business tools, and confidence-building supports to move from disadvantage to financial independence. Ciara Mangan, founder of Beyond Surviving - A survivor-led organisation providing post-crisis support and community connection for survivors of sexual violence and domestic abuse, filling a critical gap in Ireland's support services. Gareth Conlon, founder of Síolta Chroí - An environmental cooperative restoring Ireland's ecosystems through regenerative agriculture training for farmers, fostering sustainable food systems and community resilience. Cormac Noonan, co-founder of Wolf Academy - Delivering holistic wellbeing solutions to schools across Ireland, blending modern psychology and ancient practices to help young people, teachers, and parents build emotional resilience and mental health. A thriving pipeline of innovation SEI's greatest strength lies in finding and backing social entrepreneurs at the earliest stage, then bringing them on a development journey. On average, it takes three years for a project to grow from ideation to becoming an impactful organisation, and SEI is often the first supporter on that path. Research shows that once social entrepreneurs reach this later stage, their survival rates increase by 50% compared to organisations that do not access SEI's programmes. The Ideas Academy 2025 represents that vital first step, supporting people at the ideation stage to move from idea to action. Over 12 weeks, participants will refine their solutions, plan their pilots, and build confidence in storytelling and pitching. At the end of the programme, they can apply for part of a €20,000 seed fund to take their ideas to the next stage. A unique role in Ireland's social economy Since 2004, SEI...

For many survivors, leaving isn't just about walking away—it's about risking safety, stability, and even the roof over their heads. People often ask, “Why don't they just leave?” without realizing how tangled the reality is: money, fear, kids, isolation. The abuse doesn't always look like bruises; sometimes it's control so deep it seeps into every part of a person's life. And when every option feels like a loss, staying can seem like the only thing that makes any kind of sense. Sola Adenekan, award-winning documentarian and entrepreneur, shares how surviving domestic violence led her to launch Misiones Body Care, a business that empowers other survivors. She also ta;lsabout her work as a Housing Commissioner and filmmaker, using storytelling to spotlight injustice and drive change. Her award-winning film "Whistleblowers" reflects her commitment to truth and accountability. Through advocacy and art, Sola pushes for policy reforms and safe housing for abuse survivors. Her mission is rooted in healing, justice, and self-reliance. Stay tuned! Quotes: “The experience does not define the soul; rather, the soul defines the experience.” “Oftentimes, survivors leave with nothing and are forced to rebuild their lives, but starting from scratch with nothing is a monumental task.” “Entrepreneurism, for me, was my escape—to be able to gain my independence back.” Resources: Vegan Body and Lip Care That Supports Domestic Violence Surivors | Misiones BodyCare Connect with Sola Adenekan on LinkedIn

The challenges they face extend beyond scaling a business or managing operations; they wrestle with the pressure of delivering meaningful social change while also keeping a wary eye on their bottom line. That's why Caroline Diehl MBE, Founder and CEO of Social Founders, has dedicated herself to supporting the well-being of the people behind these organizations. She's not focused on the nuts and bolts of business planning or marketing. Instead, Caroline is building a global network that supports founders themselves, giving them a space to connect, decompress and recharge. As Caroline explained on today's episode, “It's amazing how some of the most experienced and brilliant social founders in our network still say that they feel lonely. They feel that they can't talk really openly to their board or to their management team. They can't constantly dump on their partner back at home. And they love the idea of connecting with other founders.”She's quick to note that the ecosystem for social impact founders doesn't match what's available to tech founders. “If you're a tech founder, you're on to a good thing. But if you're a charity founder or a social entrepreneur, it's pretty tough. And there's not much support for the actual founder.”Caroline's approach is all about founder well-being. Social Founders doesn't duplicate what others do. Instead, they partner with organizations offering practical business help, like the UK's School for Social Entrepreneurs, while focusing on the founder's mental and emotional health. “We're there for the well-being of the founder, which in turn helps that founder be a better founder,” Caroline said. The double bottom line—delivering both social impact and financial sustainability—adds another layer of complexity. Caroline captured this tension: “Sometimes you can create more social impact without having to focus on the money all the time and vice versa. If you're focusing on the money all the time, then you end up just maybe selling lots of mugs or stickers or something and not doing enough social impact.”Changemakers need not go it alone. Social Founders offers a global community, recognizing the value of peer support and connection. If you're building a social enterprise or founding a charity, consider joining the movement at socialfounder.org. You'll find a group of like-minded leaders who understand your challenges—and a network designed to help you thrive.tl;dr:Caroline Diehl MBE founded Social Founders to support the well-being of social enterprise and charity founders. She highlights the loneliness and unique pressures founders face, especially balancing impact and financial sustainability.Caroline emphasizes building networks over business advice, prioritizing emotional and peer support for changemakers. Her superpower, positive energy, has fueled her success and resilience across multiple impactful organizations.Listeners are invited to join Social Founders' global network for community, inspiration and support. How to Develop Positive Energy As a SuperpowerCaroline described her superpower as “positive energy.” She explained, “Whoever I'm talking to, whether I'm meeting some grand poobah running some big company or the people that I really love who are the grassroots founders and changemakers, or whether I'm just on my own… I can call on a superpower inside me of positive energy and make that happen.” Even during difficult times, when doubt creeps in, Caroline channels this positive energy to keep moving forward, whether she's running marathons or building impactful organizations.Illustrative Story:After founding the Media Trust and Together TV, Caroline started Social Founders from scratch, with no investment capital and little personal financial security. She had to convince funders, opinion leaders and founders from diverse backgrounds to join her network. Despite being “not young anymore,” she relied on her positive energy to inspire and mobilize others. Caroline shared that much of her energy comes from the people she meets—like a renowned Japanese dancer who supports people with learning difficulties through dance, or a young entrepreneur in Japan helping formerly incarcerated youth start businesses. These encounters continually fuel her own drive.Actionable Tips for Developing Positive Energy:Focus on your love for your mission and your passionate belief in the change you want to make.Keep reminders—like sticky notes with meaningful messages—visible in your workspace.Connect regularly with the people you aim to help; their stories can renew your motivation. When energy is low, spend time outdoors: go for a walk, bike ride or simply get fresh air.By following Caroline's example and advice, you can make positive energy a skill. With practice and effort, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. You do you!Guest ProfileCaroline Diehl MBE (she/her):Founder and CEO, Social FoundersAbout Social Founders: Social Founders is the global network for social impact founders - we connect, support and celebrate founders of charities, social enterprises and community organisations.Website: socialfounder.orgCompany Facebook Page: facebook.com/socialfoundernetworkLinkedIn: linkedin.com/company/social-foundersInstagram Handle: @social.founders Biographical Information: Caroline Diehl MBE is a highly experienced Founder, CEO, Chair and Entrepreneur working across the Creative Industries, Broadcast & Digital Media, Social Enterprise and Charity sectors. We're excited to bring you a special cross-over episode from our friends at the 'Think Fast, Talk Smart' podcast. Host Matt Abrahams joined us and recorded this live session at the Stanford Seed Transformation Network Summit in Cape Town, exploring the authentic communication strategies that every entrepreneur needs to master.Real connection means understanding your audience, staying true to yourself, and creating space for others. How do you communicate who you are, what you stand for, and leave space for others to do the same? At the Stanford Seed Summit in Cape Town, South Africa, three Stanford Graduate School of Business professors explored why real connection is built through authentic communication. For Jesper Sørensen, authentic organizational communication means talking about a business in ways customers or investors can understand, like using analogies to relate a new business model to one that people already know. For incoming GSB Dean Sarah Soule, authentic communication is about truth, not trends. Her research on "corporate confession" shows that companies build trust when they admit their shortcomings — but only if those admissions connect authentically to their core business. And for Christian Wheeler, authentic communication means suspending judgment of ourselves and others. “We have a tendency to rush to categorization, to assume that we understand things before we really do,” he says. “Get used to postponing judgment.”In this special live episode of Think Fast, Talk Smart, host Matt Abrahams and his panel of guests explore communication challenges for budding entrepreneurs. From the risks of comparing yourself to competitors to how your phone might undermine genuine connection, they reveal how authentic communication — whether organizational or personal — requires understanding your audience, staying true to your values, and creating space for others to be heard.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
