Meta Ray-Ban smart glasses now have game-changing accessories—but are they worth it? Steven and Shaun debate new side shields and charging cables, before diving into a fiery conversation about AI's reliability, accessibility frustrations, and how blind users really experience these tools. Plus, Steven shares his PC troubleshooting “hero” moment, and listeners weigh in on funding assistive tech, smart homes, and accessibility wins. This episode of Double Tap starts with Steven and Shaun exploring unexpected accessories for the Meta Ray-Ban smart glasses. From clip-on side shields to block out light to a charging cable that allows continuous use, the hosts share their reactions—Steven enthusiastically ordering both, Shaun far more skeptical. The conversation quickly turns to AI. Shaun delivers a scathing critique, declaring he's “falling out of love with AI” due to unreliable answers and dangerous inaccuracies, while Steven highlights his own disappointing attempt to set up a printer with Gemini Vision. The two hosts clash over prompting, practicality, and whether AI can ever be trusted for mobility or real-time tasks.Steven then tells the story of reviving a “silent PC” without a screen or sound—a challenge familiar to many blind users—sparking discussion on non-visual computing, audio device management, and accessibility workarounds like Narrator.Listener emails round out the episode. Charles asks why assistive tech companies don't offer payment plans, Greg from Phoenix highlights Apple Home's local control as a smarter option for thermostats, and Greg from Pennsylvania shares powerful advocacy stories, from accessible kiosks to live play-by-play at baseball games, proving change is possible with persistence.Chapters0:00 – Intro & early morning accessory shopping5:40 – Side shields for Meta Ray-Bans13:15 – Charging cable for all-day use22:30 – Shaun's AI breakup rant40:10 – Steven's Epson printer setup fail with Gemini52:30 – Falling out of love with AI?1:04:00 – The silent PC rescue story1:25:00 – WhatsApp web accessibility challenges1:40:00 – Listener email: Assistive tech payment plans1:50:00 – Listener emails: Smart thermostats, Apple Home, and advocacy wins2:05:00 – Wrap-up & closing banter Find Double Tap online: YouTube, Double Tap Website---Follow on:YouTube: https://www.doubletaponair.com/youtubeX (formerly Twitter): https://www.doubletaponair.com/xInstagram: https://www.doubletaponair.com/instagramTikTok: https://www.doubletaponair.com/tiktokThreads: https://www.doubletaponair.com/threadsFacebook: https://www.doubletaponair.com/facebookLinkedIn: https://www.doubletaponair.com/linkedin Subscribe to the Podcast:Apple: https://www.doubletaponair.com/appleSpotify: https://www.doubletaponair.com/spotifyRSS: https://www.doubletaponair.com/podcastiHeadRadio: https://www.doubletaponair.com/iheart About Double TapHosted by the insightful duo, Steven Scott and Shaun Preece, Double Tap is a treasure trove of information for anyone who's blind or partially sighted and has a passion for tech. The story of non-profit MakeGood was forged in architect Noam Platt's desire to help people with disabilities. Whether you also have a passion for assistive technology or some other cause lights you up, you don't have to wait for a project to have an impact. Learn why he thinks architects are uniquely qualified (and called) to lead positive change in the community and how to get started. Assistive technology is an emerging field that needs the creative thinking and problem solving skills of architects and designers. Finding areas like this and lending your expertise to them can have a lasting impact on your community. When you advocate and for something that helps people, you're not worried about asking for help or support. Embarrassment or making mistakes pale in comparison to getting something accomplished. You can't unsee problems especially if you know you have the ability to help solve them. One hour of your expert time is worth more than 20 hours of a non-experts time. Start by volunteering and building your network. The experience you get volunteering is experience you won't get working at a firm. That experience can be brought back to better inform projects at your firm. This week, we discuss the complexities of dyspraxia, a neurodevelopmental disorder that can greatly affect written expression. We are joined by Natasha Gray, founder of Spark Learning in the Caribbean. We unpack dyspraxia and what it is and highlight its varied types and how it often overlaps with other challenges such as ADHD and dyslexia. Natasha explains the different ways that dyspraxia can manifest and discusses some of the warning signs such as illegible handwriting, avoidance of writing tasks, and challenges with spelling and spacing. Natasha also shares her insights into the neurological and motor components behind these struggles, and she highlights why it's important to understand each child's individual needs. Our conversation offers strategies and advice for parents and educators to support children with dyspraxia, with Natasha discussing the role of occupational therapy in developing fine motor skills and classroom accommodations such as typing out assignments and providing extra time for written tasks. We tackle common challenges, such as how to address fatigue and pain caused by writing, and Natasha offers some ways to build on patience and understanding in educational environments. If you're a parent, teacher, or someone eager to learn about supporting neurodivergent children, this episode is filled with expert advice, actionable strategies, and a compassionate approach to navigating dyspraxia! Show Notes: [2:59] - Dysgraphia varies widely and affects writing speed, expression, and presentation differently in each child. [4:44] - Natasha addresses dyslexic dysgraphia which impacts spelling, handwriting, and articulation despite strong verbal skills. [8:43] - Writing difficulties in dysgraphia include poor spacing and dexterity, requiring customized accommodations. [11:46] - Dysgraphia often co-occurs with dyslexia, sharing sound-symbol association and written expression challenges. [12:58] - Natasha explains how children with dysgraphia often avoid writing and require patience, support, and therapy from teachers and parents. [15:30] - Natasha highlights the importance of improving children's fine motor skills in order to improve their handwriting. [17:05] - Natasha uses techniques such as practicing letter formation, strengthening exercises, and spacing tools to improve writing skills. [19:46] - Older children and adults can benefit from functional handwriting tasks, multisensory techniques, and assistive technology. [22:17] - Assistive tools and accommodations can help individuals demonstrate knowledge despite writing challenges. [24:53] - Natasha asserts that writing simple notes or emails helps adults improve skills, confidence, and vocabulary.
