Andrew Means is the Creative Director and Owner of Transom, an agency that helps businesses create new, meaningful connections with customers through branding and digital work. Transom's design philosophy uses anthropology, story theory, and modern brand science to uncover the emotional resonance between companies and their clients.  Andrew has a bachelor's degree in philosophy from Whitworth College. Outside of work, you can find Andrew sailing, cycling, or DJing. In this episode: It takes more than just quality wine to succeed in today's industry—especially as the number of competitors grow. You have to implement strategies to set your business apart from the rest. So, what are the steps to make your winery stand out from competitors? And how do you cultivate innovation within your company? For Creative Director Andrew Means, your success is in your story. He says that businesses often rely on customers to tell their story; however, it won't make your company memorable. So how do you fix this? Andrew recommends focusing on the emotional connection between your company and your customers. In this episode of Legends Behind the Craft, Drew Hendricks talks with Andrew Means, Creative Director and Owner of Transom, about shaping your narrative to create a strong connection with your customers. Andrew shares advice on branding, redefining your virtual experience, and focusing on the why in your company's narrative. He also offers tips on designing a story that is unique, memorable, and scalable. Stay tuned!

Andrew Means is at the leading edge of social impact data. A self confessed: “cynical optimist. “ This podcast interview with Andrew explores why data is everything - only with good impact measurement can real scalable and lasting social change be made. Andrew is the Senior Director of Global Impact Data Strategy for Salesforce.org – the social enterprise arm of digital giant Salesforce. He is also co-founder of social sector data infrastructure firm BrightHive and founder of professional development organization Data Analysts for Social Good. Andrew challenges every one of us to be really rigorous and cynical about your own impact. “It’s easy to caste yourself in the role of hero saving people. [Instead we all need to] go out and collect evidence of your impact.” Explains Andrew. Our conversation is recorded during the first few weeks and months of the coronavirus pandemic and so Andrew also talks to businesses first reactions and how we will all need to change, adapt and help.   Our guest on The Philanthropy Podcast is Andrew Means, Head of the Uptake Foundation and Beyond Uptake as well as founder of Data Analysts for Social Good. Andrew provides an incredible interview on data use in nonprofits, how we can move beyond using data only for final evaluations, and how to start building a culture of using evidence within your organization, and more. Andrew's conversation will be useful to nonprofits just starting to think about using data better as well as organizations with robust data programs considering how to improve and continue to lead.   Our show features Andrew sharing examples of multiple organizations that started using data and have made dramatic gains in their effectiveness because of it. While Andrew sings the praises of others, he humbly tells the story about how Data Analysts for Social Good began as a happy hour he organized in an attempt to build a community of like-minded people and has now grown into an international movement with over 900 members and a robust conference in the Do Good Data conference and a partnership with Stanford's Center on Philanthropy and Civil Society to put on the Digital Impact World Tour.   Remember, you can connect with me and our listeners online at:   The Philanthropy Podcast Linkedin Group, a great place to share articles and learn from your peers The Philanthropy Podcast Facebook Page, another way to be part of the conversation around our episodes @PhilanthropyPod on Twitter for the latest news and interactions   thephilanthropypodcast.com/awesome: If you think The Philanthropy Podcast has helped you do good better, then please visit and become a patron of the show at $1 per month or more. In the closing keynote of SSIR‘s February 2016 Data on Purpose conference, which was themed around “Telling Great Stories With Data,” Andrew Means looks at the importance of using storytelling to raise funds and motivate teams—but also the risks of telling the wrong stories. He argues that in a world increasingly reliant on data, we need to be able to accurately quantify organizations’ impact, and be careful about when and how we turn to dramatic, unrepresentative stories. Andrew Means is the cofounder of The Impact Lab, a data science shop that works with nonprofits, foundations, and government agencies solving social problems. He has previously held leadership positions at the University of Chicago’s Center for Data Science and Public Policy, Groupon, and the YMCA of Metropolitan Chicago.
