I sit down with two innovation leaders from one of America's oldest and most trusted consumer brands. Leah Fischman Hunter, Director of the Innovation Lab, and Ginny Fahs, Director of Product R&D at Consumer Reports, join me to unpack how a 90-year-old nonprofit is building modern tools for an online world filled with AI hype, dark patterns, and data brokers. I share a personal connection at the top. In 2004, I helped launch Consumer Reports WebWatch in the press, when most sites hid executive names, contact details, and return policies. That early effort to bring transparency to the Internet in the 1990s is why this episode matters so much to me. Two decades later, the stakes are even higher, with scams in our inboxes, consent buried in legalese, and AI systems shaping what we see and buy. CR has always had our backs and I wanted you to hear how they are doing it again. Leah and Ginny explain how Consumer Reports blends advocacy with product building. Their team translates privacy laws into something people can actually use. We dig into Permission Slip, a free app that lets you reclaim your data and tell companies to stop selling it. We discuss the reality of an opt-out culture in the United States, why people feel powerless regarding data, and how CR's independence and mission enable it to prioritize the public interest. We also explore Ask CR, an advisor grounded in tested ratings and reporting, rather than ads or affiliate commissions. We zoom out to the bigger shift happening with AI. I raise the worry that conversational agents often deliver a single definitive answer, while consumers still need choice and transparency. Leah and Ginny describe early work with academic partners on pro-consumer agentic systems and what duty of care and duty of loyalty could look like in software built for people, not just profits. We explore why online evidence needs clearer authorship, how to consider deleting data from platforms you rely on, and where education must catch up quickly. If you care about your privacy, your wallet, and the truth behind the products you buy, this one is for you. You will walk away with a clearer picture of what rights you already have, how to exercise them without hiring a lawyer, and why organizations like Consumer Reports still matter when technology moves faster than the rules that govern it.
What do an AI-powered investment engine, a grassroots organizing platform, and a nature-tech-focused VC have in common? They're all built on the conviction that technology should be in service of real-world problems – not just market efficiency or shareholder return. And increasingly, investors are stepping up not only to fund that kind of innovation, but to actively shape it.In this 3-in-1 compilation, we revisit past episodes with investors who are doing exactly that: using capital to steer technological progress toward social and environmental outcomes. Here are the featured voices:Paul Miller, Managing Partner and CEO at Bethnal Green VenturesPaul Miller launched Bethnal Green Ventures in 2012 – before “tech for good” was even a phrase most investors recognized. At the time, brilliant developers were stuck building tools for banks and ad agencies, while the problems they wanted to solve – climate, health, inequality – sat on the sidelines. Paul saw the gap and built something to fill it.Bethnal Green Ventures backs founders using technology to create measurable, intentional social and environmental impact. Everything BGV backs falls under one of three themes: building a sustainable planet, a healthy society, and better lives. That's included backing startups working on grid flexibility software for the energy transition… digital tools to streamline public healthcare… and workplace platforms helping frontline workers organize and advocate for change.Full episodeXavier Lorphelin, Managing Partner at Serena CapitalXavier Lorphelin co-founded Serena on a simple premise: entrepreneurs shouldn't work for VCs – VCs should work for entrepreneurs. From day one, the firm has been run like a startup itself, combining capital with hands-on operating support and the belief that founders deserve more than a check. That belief still holds. But in recent years, Serena's mission has sharpened. Alongside its general tech funds, the firm now manages two vehicles dedicated to sustainability: a fully SFDR Article 9 impact fund, and a new early-stage fund with a significant allocation to climate tech. Both are anchored in Serena's broader mission: to support innovative entrepreneurs in the service of a better world. For Serena, climate is only the beginning. The firm is doubling down on “Nature Tech” – tools that help companies measure and manage biodiversity, water, and soil health in real time. Their thesis is clear: digital infrastructure can enable breakthroughs in how we preserve natural systems, from AI-powered biodiversity monitoring to ground-based sensors that track ecosystem change.Full episodeDaniel Klier, former CEO of ESG BookAt the time of this interview, Daniel Klier was CEO of Arabesque S-Ray, the predecessor to ESG Book. He helped build one of the most ambitious platforms in ESG data – by combining three distinct engines: a sustainability-focused asset manager, a data provider tracking over 150 million ESG data points, and an AI system that customizes investment strategies in real time. For Daniel, tech for good means infrastructure – the kind that can shift how trillions are allocated. ESG Book's mission is to mainstream sustainable finance by making data transparent, machine-readable, and usable at scale.Full episode—Connect with SRI360°:Sign up for the free weekly email updateVisit the SRI360° PODCASTVisit the SRI360° WEBSITEFollow SRI360° on XFollow SRI360° on FACEBOOK

"My quest always has been how to make peace more profitable than war… I think it's going to be my life legacy..."Imagine a world where creating peace is more profitable than engaging in conflict. A world of 'tech for good' , where technology bridges divides, fosters collaboration, and drives equitable solutions. This vision isn't just a dream; it's the driving force behind innovators like Yip, a leader in promoting peace, purpose, and equitable collaboration within the AI and Web3 spaces.A brilliant conversation full of purpose, curiosity, hope and opportunities. We explore the concept of making peace more profitable than war, the importance of democratizing access to skills and capital, and the vision behind yip's platform, Jedi, in fostering collaboration across emerging technologies. Remaining present and fully conscious of our actions and impact is key to this process. What if we could understand and implement regenerative economic and societal models that prioritize long-term impact and equity over short-term gains, particularly democratising access for all to more regenerative funding models. We discuss the idea and importance of technical and "human" readiness, to equip and educate people in this common challenge. Yip is running her first Zebracorn reatreat in June, to start bringing together these systems and minds. Link to find out more : https://www.systain3r.com/Yip shares her story, insight and dreams of the world she is consciously and collectively crafting to bridge the gap between digital and human for the common good. The man insights you'll get from this episode are : - Bridging gaps through a collective approach to complex problems at societal level. Inspired by Muhammed Yunus' efforts for (financial) inclusion for unbanked people, overcoming the limitations of capitalism with thoughtfulness.- Also inspired by Thich Nhat Hanh's promotion of compassion in communication and shaping corporate culture by bringing mindfulness to tech companies; a mindset of peace feeding into capitalism and technology to engage with them.- Constantly reinventing/rethinking and democratising access can change conversations in systems and communities; the vision for the J3d.AL platform is to make peace more profitable than war.- As an advisory platform, it invites people to become a Jedi or find their inner Jedi, sharpening their intuition and standing up for their values. It helps governments identify collaboration opportunities with each other and the private sector.- As a (market) intelligence platform, it helps identify opportunities for collaboration in emerging fields of technology not yet mature enough for the mainstream media, e.g. quantum computing, cybersecurity, space technology.- The philosophy behind it is to generate a body of knowledge and translate it on a semantic basis from one concept to another, facilitating mutual understanding to break down silos for collaboration to accelerate innovation.- J3d.AI has three areas of operations – technology, health and sustainability. Conferences and workshops teach the skills of foresight, wisdom, compassion, and understanding technology and regenerative systems thinking.- A ‘zebracorn' marries a zebra (a company that is both black and white, i.e. both profitable and works to improve society) with a unicorn (a billion-dollar market valuation company characterised by VC funding and exponential growth).- Zebracorns are totally doable in an age of tech and globalisation as tech brings down costs and its wise use can enable business; they remain open-minded about...

Sustainability Now - exploring technologies and paradigms to shape a world that works
A Sustainability Now interview with Founder, Adina Popescu—a groundbreaking AI-driven predictive platform that integrates global oceanic and satellite data to map and monitor ocean health. Starting with the oceans, ÆRTH's bold mission is to eventually build a real-time, dynamic digital twin of the planet—to uncover global ecosystem patterns, predict ecological impacts, and drive sound restorative interventions. The importance of this work cannot be overstated as illustrated by the cautionary tale of a proposed project to cover the Saharan Desert with solar panels. Predictive modeling revealed the fact that such a project would disrupt the flow of nutrient-rich Saharan sand to the Amazon, potentially causing the rainforest's collapse. ÆRTH's mission is to make visible the hidden connections within Earth's ecosystems to guide responsible environmental stewardship. Having been an advisor to organizations like Apple's Media Arts Lab and Conservation International, Adina brings an audacious vision founded in science and technology to creatively address the intricate web of our global environmental challenges. Welcome to B The Way Forward: Interludes - a mini series of special episodes and conversations that stand apart from our regular season, but are just too good not to share. These days, the headlines can sometimes mostly focus on the challenges in tech - issues like AI ethics and data breaches. But in this special conversation, taped live at Grace Hopper Celebration 2024, Brenda wanted to shift gears! Because Grace Hopper Celebration is about the belief that when used by the right people, for the right reasons, technology can be one of the greatest forces for good in the world. And that's what this conversation is all about - the ways in which some of the best minds in tech are innovating, creating groundbreaking platforms and tech to address the most critical social issues of our time. In this episode, Brenda brings together three friends of the pod - Jimmy Chen (Propel), Dr. Fallon Wilson (VP, Tech Policy, Multicultural Media and Telecom Internet Council), and Devshi Mehrotra (CEO, JusticeText) - to talk about how to leverage technology for good and how you do that ethically, while balancing purpose and profit. And most importantly, to highlight real-world examples of how these solutions make a real difference. "I think we give for-profit businesses too much of a break and let them off easy and say 'it's just about making money' as opposed to caring about what impact they create on the world. And so if you work at a for-profit, if you are starting a for-profit, if you think about for-profits, hold them accountable to think about what is the impact that they create on the world, not just how much money do they make." -- Jimmy Chen --- At AnitaB.org, we envision a future where the people who imagine and build technology mirror the people and societies for whom they build it. This month on the Future in Sound, Jaxson Khan- former senior policy advisor to Canada's Minister of Innovation, Science, and Industry- explores the evolving role of AI in business. With a background in accessibility, AI policy, safety, innovation, and ethical frameworks, few people are better placed to help us think through the connections between tech and society. Jenn and Jaxson discuss the delicate balance between innovation and caution when it comes to AI. How do companies manage the risks of AI whilst also pursuing the opportunities it offers? Jaxson highlights the potential for AI both to enhance accessibility and to create new barriers if not implemented thoughtfully. They also tackle global approaches to AI policy—from the flexible frameworks seen in the U.S. to the more structured EU AI Act—emphasising the need for practical, citizen-focused regulations that build public trust.Useful links:Book: Prediction Machines by AJ Agrawal, Joshua Gans, and Avi GoldfarbClick here for the episode web page. For more insights straight to your inbox subscribe to the Future in Sight newsletter, and follow us on LinkedIn and Instagram This podcast is brought to you by Re:Co, a tech-powered advisory company helping private market investors pursue sustainability objectives and value creation in tandem. Minter Dialogue with Mark Hurst In this episode of the podcast, Minter Dial welcomes Mark Hurst, a digital strategy expert and founder of Creative Good. The conversation begins with a nostalgic reflection on their long-standing acquaintance and shared interests, particularly their collaborative work on World War II research. Mark delves into his career-long mission to improve technology for the benefit of users, highlighting his early optimism during the advent of the web in the mid-90s. He contrasts this with his current concerns about the unethical practices of the major tech companies. Mark discusses his radio show, Techtonic, which he started to address the negative impacts of these tech giants. He emphasises the importance of ethical considerations in technology development and criticises the industry's shift towards exploiting users for profit. The conversation also touches on the historical context of tech regulation, the role of customer feedback in product development, and the ethical dilemmas posed by modern capitalism. Minter and Mark explore the potential for more responsible business models, such as cooperatives and B Corporations, and reflect on the legacy of companies like Hewlett-Packard. The episode concludes with Mark recommending an insightful interview with astronomer Sam Lawler on his show, which highlights the broader implications of unchecked technological growth.
