It's time to take another dive into what makes a classroom subject tick, and this time around we're going for art. In a slight twist to the usual format, we've paired a discussion with a subject specialist with an excellent example of how professional enquiry coupled with top-notch subject knowledge can lead to meaningful impact on pupils. We're joined by Daisy Wilson from our friends at Yr Athrofa, an ITE partnership at the University of Wales Trinity Saint David, to discuss what art is all about as a subject, what it's for, and where its red lines, myths and misconceptions lie. After that, Jack Siddall, who has just graduated from our own PGCE Secondary Art & Design programme, joins us to discuss what happened when he decided to spend some time to develop an art curriculum bringing his pupils into contact with artists whose lived experiences they could identify with. Jack's ability to avoid heavy-handed tokenism while using his in-depth knowledge of the subject to engage pupils had profound impacts on the pupils he taught, as you'll hear in this episode. Thanks to Daisy and Jack for joining us, and we'll be back in two weeks' time. ——————————————Recorded in studio D0.18 on 28th November 2024 (Daisy Wilson discussion) and in studio B2.15 on 20th June 2025 (Rest of episode) at Cardiff Metropolitan University's Cyncoed Campus.

At first sight, urban geology sounds like an oxymoron. How can you do geology with no rocky outcrops anywhere in sight within the built-up environments of cities? It turns out you can do a great deal of geology, and Ruth Siddall has been doing just that for the past 10 years. In the podcast, she describes some of the many aspects of geology, from petrology to paleontology, that can be seen very clearly in building stone. She also takes us on a walking tour in London from the Monument to the Great Fire of London to the Tower of London.Siddall has developed nearly 50 urban geology-themed walks and built up a database of over 4,300 urban localities of geological interest. She is a postdoctoral researcher at Trinity College, Dublin, studying the social history and geological provenance of stone in 18th century buildings in Britain and Ireland.

There's no denying that we live in an era of crisis, from geopolitical strife to economic squeezes and widening wealth disparity. Looming behind all of that is the ecological devastation brought on by climate change. All of these challenges have had an impact on the art market and the wider cultural sector writ large. Artists, galleries, museums, and cultural policy-makers are all looking for ways to respond to these issues, and change the way the art world works to foster a brighter and more sustainable future. Speaking of sustainability, it's perhaps worth noting that in the same time that awareness of the global climate emergency has grown over the last two decades, so too has the art market, which has swelled to an annual turnover of $65 billion in revenue. This has been fueled in part by the ever higher prices for art as the global high-net-worth population has grown, but also a proliferation of galleries, fairs, and events, all of which have contributed to a year-round travel schedule for collectors, curators, dealers, advisors, journalists, and everyone in between. Victoria Siddall is one of the figures at the forefront of a push for change within the industry. After a nearly 20 year career at Frieze where she helped grow the fair into the global platform it is today, she's now the founding director of Murmur, a charity launched earlier this year that is aimed at helping the art and music industries combat climate change by funding initiatives to decarbonize, empower artists to create major societal change, and financing transformative climate work. She's also the co-founder and trustee of the Gallery Climate Coalition, and continues on with Frieze as a non-executive director, while also working with museums and art environmental organizations on strategy, advocacy, and fundraising. There's perhaps no better place to broach the question of the art world's responsibility to climate initiatives than in Venice, a bastion of art, architecture, and culture that is especially vulnerable to rising sea levels. That's where this year's Art For Tomorrow conference took place, at which Siddall spoke about how both museums and the market must take steps to offset their carbon footprint. Additionally, she touches on how the fair landscape has changed over the last 20 years, as have galleries needs, and whether the growth of the market side of the industry has changed the way we view cultural value in the art world.

In today's episode, Andy connects with former professional baseball player and current Toronto Blue Jays' TV analyst and commentator Joe Siddall. A quote that comes to mind with this episode is this: “I saw the angel in the marble and carved until I set him free” This quote attributed to Michaelangelo in reference to one of his sculptures. However, it also applies to Joe Siddall. He is a walking monument to what it means to have an attitude of gratitude. So much so that his daughter MacKenzie created her own brand to encourage the practice of 'gratitude' in order to help others live up to their potential. One of the special things that Joe demonstrates for us is that many of his core beliefs and codes of conduct are actually well-established mindfulness and optimal performance concepts that each of us has inside of us. We just need to learn to look for them. And just like Michaelangelo, if we can simply continue to carve until we set our own talents free, we, too, can create a life that is a beautiful work of art.As you listen to this podcast, see how many of Joe's “Kevinism's” come through. These “Kevinism's” are the inspiration behind many of Joe's expressed beliefs. You'll learn why from the interview and will definitely want to hear it from Joe himself. Some of the concepts and themes Joe has practiced and lived himself are listed below. Donald Lee Hassler, a Texas parolee, has been charged with capital murder in the mysterious disappearance and suspected murder of 57-year-old Sheryl Siddall. Siddall, a grandmother residing in Horseshoe Lake Estates in north Liberty County, northeast of Houston, vanished without a trace on September 18, leaving authorities and her distraught family searching for answers. The ordeal began when Siddall's concerned niece reported her missing, triggering a welfare check at her home. What deputies discovered inside Siddall's residence only deepened the sense of dread—a trail of blood on the kitchen floor and cabinets. Despite a thorough search in the community and the lake behind her house, Siddall has not been found. When deputies arrived at Siddall's home, Hassler, an acquaintance of Siddall's answered the door. His assertion that Siddall had left to visit her sister in Oklahoma and that he was in the process of buying her house raised immediate suspicions. Authorities, however, found Siddall's belongings—wallet, purse, ID, and vehicle—inside her home, contradicting Hassler's claims. Complicating matters, Siddall's phone, which last pinged a cellphone tower near her residence on September 11 before going silent, has yet to be located. Hassler, who was initially booked into the Liberty County Jail on a charge of being a felon in possession of a firearm—a parole violation—remained at the center of the investigation. As the case unfolded, investigators discovered eight firearms in a box trailer belonging to Hassler and in his pickup truck. The additional charges intensified the severity of the situation, marking Hassler as the prime suspect in Siddall's disappearance. Following his arrest, Hassler's lack of cooperation with authorities became apparent. Deputies stated that he pleaded the Fifth Amendment against self- incrimination, heightening suspicions surrounding his involvement. Hassler was subsequently held without bond, a decision made as the search for Siddall continued. Unfortunately, a date for the resumption of the search was not immediately available. Liberty County Sheriff's Capt. David Meyers expressed determination, stating, “We still want to find Siddall, and we will not give up until we do! We want to help bring some sort of closure to her family." The family, grappling with uncertainty, has already initiated discussions about a memorial service for Siddall. In a month marked by unsettling developments, Siddall's family disclosed that she has no sister in Oklahoma, contradicting Hassler's claim. Adding another layer of complexity, Siddall's family filed a petition against Hassler, alleging that he forged Siddall's signature on a deed on June 30, granting himself general power of attorney. In a testament to the challenges faced by Siddall's family, a fundraising page has been established to alleviate the financial burden associated with the civil case and Siddall's funeral. The fundraiser aims to support legal expenses, cover funeral costs, and provide assistance to Siddall's children, who have taken time off work to search for their missing mother.
