In the podcast, she describes some of the many aspects of geology, from petrology to paleontology, that can be seen very clearly in building stone. She also takes us on a walking tour in London from the Monument to the Great Fire of London to the Tower of London.Siddall has developed nearly 50 urban geology-themed walks and built up a database of over 4,300 urban localities of geological interest. Can the Art Trade Become More Sustainable?

The Art Angle

There's no denying that we live in an era of crisis, from geopolitical strife to economic squeezes and widening wealth disparity. Looming behind all of that is the ecological devastation brought on by climate change. All of these challenges have had an impact on the art market and the wider cultural sector writ large. Artists, galleries, museums, and cultural policy-makers are all looking for ways to respond to these issues, and change the way the art world works to foster a brighter and more sustainable future. Speaking of sustainability, it's perhaps worth noting that in the same time that awareness of the global climate emergency has grown over the last two decades, so too has the art market, which has swelled to an annual turnover of $65 billion in revenue. This has been fueled in part by the ever higher prices for art as the global high-net-worth population has grown, but also a proliferation of galleries, fairs, and events, all of which have contributed to a year-round travel schedule for collectors, curators, dealers, advisors, journalists, and everyone in between. Victoria Siddall is one of the figures at the forefront of a push for change within the industry. After a nearly 20 year career at Frieze where she helped grow the fair into the global platform it is today, she's now the founding director of Murmur, a charity launched earlier this year that is aimed at helping the art and music industries combat climate change by funding initiatives to decarbonize, empower artists to create major societal change, and financing transformative climate work. She's also the co-founder and trustee of the Gallery Climate Coalition, and continues on with Frieze as a non-executive director, while also working with museums and art environmental organizations on strategy, advocacy, and fundraising. There's perhaps no better place to broach the question of the art world's responsibility to climate initiatives than in Venice, a bastion of art, architecture, and culture that is especially vulnerable to rising sea levels. That's where this year's Art For Tomorrow conference took place, at which Siddall spoke about how both museums and the market must take steps to offset their carbon footprint. Additionally, she touches on how the fair landscape has changed over the last 20 years, as have galleries needs, and whether the growth of the market side of the industry has changed the way we view cultural value in the art world.

In today's episode, Andy connects with former professional baseball player and current Toronto Blue Jays' TV analyst and commentator Joe Siddall. A quote that comes to mind with this episode is this: “I saw the angel in the marble and carved until I set him free” This quote attributed to Michaelangelo in reference to one of his sculptures. However, it also applies to Joe Siddall. He is a walking monument to what it means to have an attitude of gratitude. So much so that his daughter MacKenzie created her own brand to encourage the practice of 'gratitude' in order to help others live up to their potential. One of the special things that Joe demonstrates for us is that many of his core beliefs and codes of conduct are actually well-established mindfulness and optimal performance concepts that each of us has inside of us. We just need to learn to look for them. And just like Michaelangelo, if we can simply continue to carve until we set our own talents free, we, too, can create a life that is a beautiful work of art.As you listen to this podcast, see how many of Joe's “Kevinism's” come through. These “Kevinism's” are the inspiration behind many of Joe's expressed beliefs. You'll learn why from the interview and will definitely want to hear it from Joe himself. Some of the concepts and themes Joe has practiced and lived himself are listed below. You are sure to hear others as you listen to this interview with Andy.1. Live life with an attitude of gratitude2. Keep moving forward3. We have to take action to realize the opportunities we are given4. Be adaptable5. Be present6. Competence leads to confidence which leads to performance7. You can quiet your inner critic8. Lean on others for support and guidanceJoe has a professional baseball career that spans 13 years playing in the big leagues for three teams; the Montreal Expos, Florida Marlins and the Detroit Tigers. Known as a defensive specialist, his skills were excellent and this is the one of the main reasons why he was able to rise the ranks he did in professional sport. This episode is about so much more than his playing days as a professional athlete, but more so how one lives a life rooted in the things that matter most. Through love, life, death and grief, Joe and his family have learned that gratitude and appreciation are the keys to finding meaning and purpose in this one life that we are offered. Hoping you find some takeaway value in this discussion with the inspiring Joe Siddall. Tragedy Unfolds: Texas Parolee Charged with Capital Murder in Disappearance of Sheryl Siddall

Donald Lee Hassler, a Texas parolee, has been charged with capital murder in the mysterious disappearance and suspected murder of 57-year-old Sheryl Siddall. Siddall, a grandmother residing in Horseshoe Lake Estates in north Liberty County, northeast of Houston, vanished without a trace on September 18, leaving authorities and her distraught family searching for answers. The ordeal began when Siddall's concerned niece reported her missing, triggering a welfare check at her home. What deputies discovered inside Siddall's residence only deepened the sense of dread—a trail of blood on the kitchen floor and cabinets. Despite a thorough search in the community and the lake behind her house, Siddall has not been found. When deputies arrived at Siddall's home, Hassler, an acquaintance of Siddall's answered the door. His assertion that Siddall had left to visit her sister in Oklahoma and that he was in the process of buying her house raised immediate suspicions. Authorities, however, found Siddall's belongings—wallet, purse, ID, and vehicle—inside her home, contradicting Hassler's claims. Complicating matters, Siddall's phone, which last pinged a cellphone tower near her residence on September 11 before going silent, has yet to be located. Hassler, who was initially booked into the Liberty County Jail on a charge of being a felon in possession of a firearm—a parole violation—remained at the center of the investigation. As the case unfolded, investigators discovered eight firearms in a box trailer belonging to Hassler and in his pickup truck. The additional charges intensified the severity of the situation, marking Hassler as the prime suspect in Siddall's disappearance. Following his arrest, Hassler's lack of cooperation with authorities became apparent. Deputies stated that he pleaded the Fifth Amendment against self- incrimination, heightening suspicions surrounding his involvement. Hassler was subsequently held without bond, a decision made as the search for Siddall continued. Unfortunately, a date for the resumption of the search was not immediately available. Liberty County Sheriff's Capt. David Meyers expressed determination, stating, “We still want to find Siddall, and we will not give up until we do! We want to help bring some sort of closure to her family." The family, grappling with uncertainty, has already initiated discussions about a memorial service for Siddall. In a month marked by unsettling developments, Siddall's family disclosed that she has no sister in Oklahoma, contradicting Hassler's claim. Adding another layer of complexity, Siddall's family filed a petition against Hassler, alleging that he forged Siddall's signature on a deed on June 30, granting himself general power of attorney. In a testament to the challenges faced by Siddall's family, a fundraising page has been established to alleviate the financial burden associated with the civil case and Siddall's funeral. The fundraiser aims to support legal expenses, cover funeral costs, and provide assistance to Siddall's children, who have taken time off work to search for their missing mother.

CROW is South Africa's oldest wildlife rehabilitation centre. For the past 43 years, the centre has been rehabilitating and releasing wild animals and birds. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which suspended their international volunteer programme for two years, combined with the devastating 2022 floods in Kwazulu-Natal and the current cost of living crisis, the centre is in danger of closing down. In an interview with BizNews, Clint Halkett-Siddall, the Director of CROW, shed light on the centre's current plight. What was once a sanctuary rescuing 3,000 to 4,000 injured, orphaned and displaced animals and birds annually is now facing a grim reality: a mere ten months of operational costs stand between them and closure. In a bid to keep their doors open, Halkett-Siddall said CROW has initiated a BackaBuddy campaign, reaching out for support. He emphasised the critical role played by CROW in educating future generations. CROW's education program has already reached 160,000 pupils. He said urbanisation is exacting a significant toll on South Africa's wildlife.

We're talking to curator Carol Jacobi about ‘The Rossettis', an exhibition of over 150 works at Tate Britain, celebrating the romance and radicalism of Dante Gabriel, Christina and Elizabeth née Siddall.  It's the first ever retrospective of Dante Gabriel Rossetti at the Tate and the largest exhibition of his work in two decades, as well as being the first retrospective of Elizabeth Siddal for 30 years. The exhibition sets out to shed light on just how ground-breaking the Rossetti family's work was, from Christina's poetry (first published when she was just 16) to their paintings and even their designs for clothing and interiors.  Carol convinces detractors that the Pre-Raphaelite movement marked a significant shift towards depicting more intimate and personal subject matter, and argues that a reappraisal of them as highly talented and extraordinary radicals is long overdue. ‘The Rossettis' runs at Tate Britain until 24th September Follow us on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram

Show Notes: First human patients receive transfusions of lab-grown blood cells | New Atlas (01:01)  For the first time ever, human patients have received transfusions of blood cells that were grown from stem cells in a lab  Revolutionize blood transfusions Blood donations are life saving, but the demand outweighs the supply But only 13.6 million units of whole blood and red blood cells are collected in the U.S. in a year. According to the Red Cross, only about 3% of age-eligible people donate blood yearly. Nearly 16 million blood components are transfused each year in the U.S. Approximately 29,000 units of red blood cells are needed every day in the U. S.  An attractive alternative would be large-scale production of red blood cells in labs, which can be tuned to have whichever blood type is needed.  The new clinical trial, named RESTORE, is designed to test the safety of transfusions of these manufactured blood cells, as well as how long they last in the body. Lab-grown blood  is all made “fresh,” so it should all reliably last up to 120 days. For people with conditions that require regular blood transfusions, such as sickle cell, the longer lifespan of the cells should help give them longer gaps between transfusions.  The RESTORE trial will involve at least 10 participants receiving “mini” transfusions of blood, containing just 5 to 10 ml (one to two teaspoons) of red blood cells. So far, two participants have received transfusions of lab-grown blood cells as part of the trial, with the scientists reporting that they have shown no untoward side effects. While this is a major milestone towards that goal, there's still much more work to do before blood transfusions are regularly lab-grown This clear window coating could cool buildings without using energy | Electrek (06:41) Scientists have used advanced computing tech and AI to design a clear window coating that could lower the temperature inside buildings. Saving a whole lot of cooling energy. Cooling accounts for about 15% of global energy consumption, and it's only going to get hotter, especially in more tropical climates. The sun's ultraviolet and near-infrared light are the parts of the solar spectrum that pass through window glass to heat an enclosed room. Why a car gets hot sitting in the sun. If you block that light energy the amount of cooling needed would be reduced According to their new paper, researchers from University of Notre Dame in Indiana and Kyung Hee University in Seoul, successfully designed a clear window coating, or “transparent radiative cooler” (TRC). According to the report,  “[The team] optimized the type, order, and combination of layers using an iterative approach guided by machine learning and quantum computing, which stores data using subatomic particles” Using this quantum method allowed the team to carry out the optimization process faster. Which eventually, “produced a coating design that, when fabricated, beat the performance of conventionally designed TRCs in addition to one of the best commercial heat-reduction glasses on the market.” Through heat simulations of the TRC as a potential window material for a standard office with two windows they were able to figure out roughly the heat savings. 31.1% of the cooling energy consumption when conventional windows are used. The average annual energy saving over the surveyed U.S. cities is 50 MJ/m2 In cities with hot, dry weather the TRC can potentially save around 86.3 MJ/m2 per year. There's no indication of commercial scaling in the study, but the researchers write that the film “can be potentially scaled up for practical applications because their fabrication can be achieved using state-of-the-art deposition techniques.” Experimental breast cancer vaccine passes first human trials   | New Atlas (12:19) I don't like using the term vaccine for these types of treatments. It is more of cell/protein therapy so I'll put that out there before I get into this. Up to 30% of breast cancers involve the overproduction of a protein called human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2).  HER2-positive cancers are often more aggressive than other types of breast cancer These treatments deliver DNA blueprints for the production of certain proteins into the nucleus of a cell. The protein is then produced by the cell, triggering an immune response.  This treatment in question prompts cells to produce a specific fragment of the HER2 protein. Note another reason I don't call it a vaccine:  These are known as “therapeutic vaccines”, given to patients after they are diagnosed with a cancer in the hopes they help the immune system better seek and destroy certain tumors. The trial was not geared to evaluate how effective the experimental treatment is at treating breast cancer.  But still in the trial there were promising signs of efficacy, with 80% of the treated trial participants surviving the full 10-year follow-up Only around 50% of patients with advanced HER2 breast cancer would generally be expected to survive more than five year Looking into the survival rate: 95.8% of females survive breast cancer for at least one year, this falls to 85.0% surviving for five years or more, and continues to fall to roughly 75% for 10 years,  as shown by age-standardized net survival for patients diagnosed with breast cancer during 2013-2017 in England. A Phase 2 trial is currently underway, testing the treatment's efficacy in a larger cohort of HER2-positive patients. Scientists are working on an official 'alien contact protocol' for when ET phones Earth | Live Science (19:01) For the first time in 35 years, a team of policy experts and scientists have united to establish a set of alien-contact protocols for the entire world to follow in the event of a sudden encounter with E.T.  What better use of “policy experts” … unless they know something Currently, the only alien contact protocol that humans have was established by the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence Institute (SETI) community in 1989. vague when it comes to the international response to extraterrestrial communication mainly focuses on the importance of sharing discoveries with the public and broader scientific community. The new SETI Detection Hub will scan signals for potential messages sent from alien lifeforms and will develop a framework for attaching meaning to those signals. End it with John Elliot, a computer scientist at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland, and coordinator of the SETI Detection Hub, talking on the preparedness effort: “Will we ever get a message from E.T.? We don't know. We also don't know when this is going to happen … But we do know that we cannot afford to be ill-prepared — scientifically, socially, and politically rudderless — for an event that could turn into reality as early as tomorrow." Open-source fish robot starts collecting microplastics from UK lakes | The Next Web (24:20) Microplastics in the water is a problem: A new study from Stanford University found that blue whales, the biggest creatures on Earth, ingest about 10 million pieces of microplastics per day. What could be the solution? Maybe a plastic eating robot fish? A robot fish that collects microplastics from waterways has been turned from an idea into a working prototype.  The design was brought to life after it won the University of Surrey's public competition, the Natural Robotics Contest. Competition was to submit an idea for a bio-inspired robot that could help the world. The robotics panelists and researchers, led by Dr. Robert Siddall, turned the design into a 3D-printed prototype about the size of a salmon. consists of a flooded head unit and a watertight tail unit. Set of gills on its sides and a fine mesh in between them that can sieve about two-millimeter particles Filters the water and keeps the microplastics inside its container as it swims. The robot fist has already been tested in the lab and local lakes  Going Forward, according to Siddall, the team is envisioning a range of improvements for the robot: Making It faster and smarter Operate autonomously, rather than being remote controlled.
