Katrina grew up in a compassionate household, with her sister and father going vegetarian in the early 1970s because they could not cause animals to suffer. She followed in their footsteps, becoming vegetarian at age 17, and soon started her animal rights activism journey, volunteering with Animal Liberation Victoria during her university studies.Katrina had been holding onto the label of vegetarianism until she stopped making excuses for herself seven years ago and finally went vegan. She has over 30 years of animal activism experience with a number of organisations and campaigns including direct rescue, the Animal Justice Party, Humane Research Australia, the Coalition for the Protection of Racehorses, Vegan Rising, Lamb Care Australia, Victorian Lamb Rescue, and Trivia for the Animals. Katrina has 20 years teaching experience and spent 17 of those years living and working in Japan teaching interpreting skills and English. While residing in Japan she was involved in the formation of Animal Walk Tokyo and Japan Earthquake Animal Rescue and Support (JEARS), following the Great Tōhoku Earthquake in 2011. In this episode, Katrina shares her morning gratitude practice, the changes she has witnessed in the animal activism space over the last 30 years, challenges vegans face and the burden we carry in a non vegan world. https://www.facebook.com/KatrinaKSJ/https://www.instagram.com/chuchotage0707/https://twitter.com/BMJ0707The Way We Think About Charity is Dead Wrong - https://youtu.be/bfAzi6D5FpM

"If I could deliver one message to the researchers who are looking for the cause of diabetes and the cause of clogged arteries and the cause of high blood pressure and the cause of diabetes I would tell them the answer is in 3 words - it's the food". These words were said by Dr Michael Klaper, an American physician who uses whole foods plant-based nutrition in his medical practice, and come straight from the movie 'What The Health'. This movie opened internationally this month and we were privileged to attend the Australian premiere screening in Melbourne this week. This extremely provacative and groundbreaking documentary movie made by Kip Andersen and Keegan Kuhn, is the follow-up film from the creators of the award-winning documentary Cowspiracy. The film exposes the collusion and corruption in government and big business that is costing us trillions of healthcare dollars, and keeping us sick. It uncovers the secret to preventing and even reversing chronic diseases, which is essentially a whole foods plant-based diet, and seems to be something the world's leading health organizations don't want people to know about. In this episode we discuss our impressions of the movie, play the trailer of the movie, and then play the audio from a medical panel discussion which was conducted in the cinema immediately following the movie screening. This panel included general practitioner Dr Malcolm Mackay, medical oncologist Dr Despina Handolias, lifestyle medicine trainee Dr Renae Thomas, neuropsychologist Dr Ash Nayate, and was moderated by intensive care physician Dr Andrew Davies. The panel members gave their impressions of the movie and discussed how they are using plant-based nutrition in their practice before answering questions from the audience. The many questions included how we can get more health care professionals to consider plant-based nutrition in their own lives and practice, what are the best resources for information to back up our dietary choices, what are the effects of pesticides on plant-based wholefoods, whether we should be concerned about significant soy consumption, the risk of iron deficiency for plant-based eaters, recommendations regarding vitamin B12 supplementation on a plant-based diet, whether backyard eggs might be better than commercially produced eggs, the struggles of challenging the status quo in health education, and thoughts on a high carbohydrate, low fat approach to diet. This was a really valuable panel discussion and we are very pleased to bring this to you courtesy of Raw Events Australia and Animal Liberation Victoria who arranged the movie screening and panel discussion. Hope you enjoy it.
On our first show back from the summer break, we speak with Kristin Leigh of Animal Liberation Victoria about a series of vigils they have been holding at Melbourne slaughterhouses. Kristin tells us about why ALV has been doing this activism, what they have witnessed and what happened when dozens of police showed up to one of their recent peaceful vigils.
Last April, we recorded the fantastic talk given by Dr Michael Klaper at Melbourne's Astor Theatre, an event hosted by Animal Liberation Victoria. Dr Klaper is an acclaimed doctor, dedicated environmentalist, and passionate educator. He has been a champion of the vegan diet since the early 1980s, recognising the devastating impacts that animal agriculture has on human and planetary health and, of course, on animals. Dr Klaper had a brief but memorable appearance in the documentaryCowspiracy where he uttered the now oft-quoted line “The purpose of cow’s milk is to turn a 65-pound calf into a 700-pound cow as rapidly as possible. Cow’s milk is baby calf growth fluid.” We'll share the first part of this warm and wonderful presentation.Dr Klaper's website: www.doctorklaper.com
Listen HEREI am very pleased to welcome back Francis Glass, coordinator of Animal Liberation Youth, from Animal Liberation Victoria. In our last interview we talked about non-vegan volunteers handing out literature, and this episode we would like to respond to the comments and concerns that raised about this subject, as it is definitely something that needs to be discussed. Thank you to Karin Hilpisch for your comments! We also talk about young people who are going vegan and how important they are to our future, and what it is like for a young person who is still living with their parents to go vegan, the resistance some kids get from their families and 13 and 14 year olds dealing with parents who are hostile to veganism and actively try to prevent their children from being vegan. We discuss the different reasons why the parents may be reacting in this way and try to come up with more ideas on ways to help them and their children through that. This is something us independent, adult vegans can't relate to as we control our own home environments and the products that we buy, so I am very grateful to Francis for offering us some insight into that, and for reminding us that it is not so easy for young people living in controlled environments as it is for independent adults. We also go on to talk about why we promote ethical reasons to go vegan above all other reasons such as health, environment etc, while still stressing that knowledge of these other aspects is essential too.In my next interview with Francis we will discuss further comments raised about protesting in front of KFC and the like with regard to promoting veganism and not single issue campaigns. We didn't get a chance to cover that this time as we went off to talk about other things (as often happens on this podcast) however please be assured we will be talking about that, as it is also very relevant and valid topic for discussion. Thanks again to listeners for the great feedback and insight and suggestions and thanks to Francis for coming back on the show! Here is the link to the Vegan Easy Challenge mentioned on the show: link hereThis is what ALL the animal groups should be doing.I mentioned a book written by a teenage vegan called Claire Askew, who I heard interviewed on Vegan Freak Radio. Claire wrote a book for teenage vegans called Generation V, and it is a fantastic resource for teenagers. Listen to the Vegan Freaks interview with Claire hereI also mentioned a quote by Marin Luther King, Jr. which in my usual style I had not committed to memory and so totally screwed up. Please forgive me as always. I will work on that! Here is the quote:"History will have to record that the greatest tragedy of this period of social transition was not the strident clamor of the bad people, but the appalling silence of the good people."- Marin Luther King, Jr.UPDATE: If anyone's audio is messed up about halfway through, please re-download. I am so sorry for making anyone download this twice. I totally messed up, and there is some audio from the last interview mixed in by accident. I loaded up the correct file. Please delete the messed up audio and re-download. Sorry!
Listen HEREPart two of my interview with Francis Glass from Animal Liberation Youth, of Animal Liberation Victoria. We talk about the social conditioning we are up against, the deep rooted moral schizophrenia in our lives as human beings and the profound effect on our psyche and our peace of mind. We talk about young men, or all men, in many cultures who are terribly depressed and repressed because of being pressured into being so unreasonably "tough" and expected to be violent in order to prove their "toughness" (i.e. eat meat etc), and relate this to the violence we tolerate in our lives on a daily basis, violence we can end if we so choose! We emphasize how damaging this perpetual violence is to our world and ourselves, and discuss different methods to open people's minds to the knowledge that they no longer have to struggle with the guilt and the fear and the violence, and they can go vegan. Thank you Francis for coming on the show!
Listen HEREPart one of my interview with special guest Francis Glass, an 18 year old abolitionist vegan from Australia, and coordinator of Animal Liberation Youth, which is part of the abolitionist vegan advocacy group Animal Liberation Victoria. We talk about activism, vegan education, the counterproductiveness and elitism of welfare reform, and emphasize the fact that the abolitionist movement is part of the peace movement. You can find information about this abolitionist activism in Australia by going to http://www.alv.org.au/ and http://www.animalliberationyouth.org.au/Stay tuned for part two...
