This Melbourne Cup Day, The Briefing brings you both sides of the debate, so you can make up your own mind. Helen Smith is joined by Katherine Coleman, assistant trainer at Moody Racing, and MP Georgie Purcell, Australian politician and member of the Animal Justice Party, to ask what they both want you to know about the horse racing industry in Australia today. Mike ran as a lower house candidate in the last state election and enjoyed being on the campaign trail. Louise reflects on pivotal moments in her life and there are a few common threads - reading Peter Singer's books and the birth of her first child, all of which had a profound impact and led her to where she is today. During Louise's university studies, she read Peter Singer's book "Practical Ethics" which covered a range of ethical issues, including animal rights. This book absolutely changed how Louise felt about animals, because it brought their suffering to the forefront and as a result, she went vegetarian. Soon after the birth of Sebastian, Louise saw a television story on bobby calves in the dairy industry. She had experienced the strong bond between mother and child and knew she couldn't contribute to such a cruel industry, so she went vegan. Across her financial services career, Louise has worked in a variety of roles including retail banking, institutional funds management, stockbroking and financial advisory. In 2011, Louise read Peter Singer's "The Life You Can Save" and knew she needed to do more to help end human suffering. Louise and her family pledged to give a percentage of their household income to help those experiencing extreme poverty across the world. In a beautiful twist of fate, Louise joined The Live You Can Save team as Director of Philanthropy eighteen months ago. Louise recognises the importance of politics in bringing about change for animals, so she joined the Animal Justice Party over five years ago. Not long after joining, Louise was asked to stand as a candidate and has since been a candidate four times. In addition, Louise has held several leadership positions including SA State Convenor and was recently elected as President of the AJP Board of Directors. In this episode, Louise shares how she helped secure political reform for animals during the 2022 SA state and federal election, as well as donating with confidence and how she enjoys spending her free time. https://www.instagram.com/veganmamaboss/https://au.linkedin.com/in/louise-pfeifferhttps://twitter.com/LVPC

About 1.5 million kangaroos a year are shot, bludgeoned or left to starve to death or die of their injuries. This occurs because companies like Adidas and New Balance still pay hunters to head into the Australian wilderness to hunt the animals. The hunters make the kills, the kangaroos are skinned, and the skins are made into soccer shoes for affluent customers across the United States and other parts of the world.   That's right. The largest commercial slaughter of terrestrial wildlife is predicated on selling soccer shoes, or cleats, to pros, amateurs and kids who are willing to pay extra merely for the "luxury" of wearing leather from dead kangaroos.   Worse, the slain kangaroos often have joeys in their pouches. The policy for joeys is that they are immediately to be killed, usually by bludgeoning them against the bumper of the hunter's truck. Those who don't meet this fate often escape back into the wild, where they, too, face starvation, dehydration, or being attacked and eaten by other wild animals. It's a brutal kill for what seems to us to be an absolutely frivolous purpose   The campaign to stop this horror show is called Kangaroos Are Not Shoes, and here to talk about is Wayne Pacelle, president of Animal Wellness Action and the Center for a Humane Economy. He'll tell us about progress the campaign has made and what comes next. Also on the show are Emma Hurst and Louise Ward. Hurst is a member of the Australian parliament, representing the Animal Justice Party, and Ward is a state director for it. We had the chance to visit them during a break from their whirlwind visits with U.S. congressmen and senators on Capitol Hill.   Listeners can take action for kangaroos by visiting www.kangaroosarenotshoes.org, where you'll find links to congressional Action Alerts and a petition for the Don't Be a Dick's campaign, which intends to pressure the nation's largest sporting-goods retailer to stop trafficking in the skins of slaughtered kangaroos.   The Animal Wellness podcast is produced by Animal Wellness Action and the Center for a Humane Economy. It focuses on improving the lives of animals in the United States and abroad through legislation and by influencing businesses to create a more humane economy. Ally's passion for social justice stemmed from her early placement in programs supporting women in the domestic and family violence space. Having lived and worked in Lismore since 2001, Ally felt compelled by the recent catastrophic flooding her community experienced and wanted to take action as a candidate.  In this episode, Ally shares the changes she would work on when elected, her vow to live in a cage for a week to highlight the plight of battery hens and raising vegan children.  https://www.instagram.com/alisonwaters.ajp/https://www.facebook.com/AJP.Watershttps://nsw.animaljusticeparty.org/alison_waters

Today in the award winning The Good Girl Confessional, host Sandy Lowres is chatting with Louise Pfeiffer, a passionate philanthropist, politician and animal rights advocate. Louise is a woman who doesn't do things by halves. Down to earth and approachable, Louise is quietly passionate about the things she believes in, and living a life that aligns with her values. Louise is a proud South Australian, and the Director of Philanthropy at The Life You Can Save, an organisation that makes smart giving simple by recommending charities that save lives and improve well-being where each dollar goes the furthest. Having done the research already, The Life You Can Save makes it easy for donors to support charities that are proven to be highly impactful. Through their website they recommend many charities that are making an impact including those that support women and girls globally, climate change, and charities that create ecomomic opportunities. While studying ethics, Louise was inspired by Peter Singer, the man often dubbed by Journalists as the “world's most influential living philosopher", to become more mindful in regards to issues that impact the world - global poverty and animal justice amongst them. She became interested in effective altruism which measures the number of lives saved per dollar. On their website, The Life You Can Save has an Impact Calculator so you can see what impact your donation is making. Beyond her work at The Life You Can Save, Louise has worked or volunteered in roles across financial advising, management consulting, political campaigning and animal advocacy. In 2017, Louise felt moved to join the Animal Justice Party in South Australia becoming a Senate candidate, with a key focus of helping farmers transition to move to more sustainable, plant based crops and business models. Louise is now the Vice President of the Animal Justice Party. Louise was hoping she could create structural change at a bigger level. For Louise, the treatment of animals cannot be separated from the health of our environment and is linked to the wellbeing of our community.Big change requires bold thinking and in 2018, Louise ran in the South Australian State Election as a candidate…and then as a lead candidate in the Senate in 2019. In 2022, she ran for both the State and Federal election. She is now the Vice President of the party.‘They may be a minor party but we can still have an impact. It gives us the ability to negotiate with bigger parties at a State and Federal level."Sandy chats with Louise about her life in philathropy, being a woman in Australian Politics, animal rights and veganism, and why passion for what you do really matters, and the changes it can effect.
