Do you love Halloween? Do you like to dig deep into philosophical discussions of life and death? This episode might just be for you. Today's show is a Halloween special with something a little different. In the first half, Hope explores the theme of cannibalism in zombie, vampire, and other fantasy and horror movies and shows how these stories actually underscore our speciesist tendencies. Then, in the second half of the show, Hope and her husband Cogen, have a conversation about why people love horror movies and ask the question, could it be that our society likes to eat meat because it's a socially sanctioned murder? Or can horror movies help us to empathize with farmed animals that are experiencing the same horrors as the victims in the movies?

Get ready for a wild and inspiring ride with the fabulous Vegan Queens, Gemini and her daughter Myasma! Gemini takes us on a nostalgic journey back to her early days in drag during the 1980s, all while being cheered on by her supportive mother. Miasma shares her informal yet heartwarming introduction to the world of drag, leading to the creation of their unique act that brilliantly blends personal history and professional flair. And let's not forget their dramatic escape from Putin, adding an unforgettable twist to their story. We then shift gears to tackle pressing issues of intersectionality in vegan advocacy. By examining the Amazon rainforest's crucial role and critiquing misleading ethical labels, we highlight the deep connections between environmental conservation, animal agriculture, and social justice. Through candid discussions, we draw thought-provoking parallels between speciesism and homophobia, revealing how societal norms perpetuate harm and the importance of visible queerness in challenging these injustices. Finally, we explore the profound mission of Pink Triangle Theatre and the dimensions of oppression faced by both animals and marginalized communities. By sharing compelling personal anecdotes and reflections on emotions, we underscore the universal nature of feelings and the ethical implications of recognizing this interconnectedness. From laughter to grief, we embrace the messy spectrum of human emotions, advocating for a shift towards veganism and a more compassionate world. What's the connection between drag and vegan living? The Vegan Queens are here to show you. Guest Bio: The Vegan Queens - an ever-so-traditional Mancunian drag family. Meet Gemini, the matriarch of the Haus of Andro, and her daughter Miasma.  Together they are The Vegan Queens - the live-singing, pun-slinging, tofu-chomping temptresses of the North West. With their own unique brand of ‘dragtivism', the queens aim to educate, inspire, and entertain, serving the vegan message with a side salad of sass.  Thanks for listening to another episode.      On this show we welcome back Zane McNeill to discuss their new edited collection: Building Multispecies Resistance Against Exploitation: Stories from the Frontline of Labor and Animal Rights (published by Peter Lang, 2024). This incredible collection of contributions from activists and scholars about the structures of violence and oppression that are shared by human and non-human labourers working and dying in necropolitical facilities. The book also asks readers to consider the intersection between class and species, race, gender and other categories of oppression, and the ways that the contemporary Animal Activist Non-profit Sector (AANS) upholds hierarchies in its mission towards animal liberation. There are some powerful examples of successful social and political campaigns that we can draw from and that can help us to build strategic alliances and coalitions between social movements and political subjects.    Zane McNeill is a scholar-activist, 15-year vegan, and National Lawyers Guild's Animal Liberation Committee chair. They have worked closely with the Institute of Critical Animal Studies (ICAS) and have published chapters in ICAS collections, including Vegans on Speciesism and Ableism: Ecoability Voices for Disability and Animal Justice and Expanding the Critical Animal Studies Imagination: Essays on Solidarity and Total Liberation. In this episode we speak with Dr. Clive Spash, an ecological economist who is fundamentally challenging conventional economic paradigms through his development of social ecological economics. His work addresses the intersections of human behavior, environmental values, and economic systems - advocating for a radical transformation towards a more socially and ecologically just world.  Highlights include: A critique of mainstream economics for failing to consider not only ecological and biophysical realities, but also pro-social human behavior and relationships, as well as power hierarchies; How economists who have completed multiple degrees in economics are found to be particularly closed-minded and resistant to alternative perspectives; How major environmental NGOs, including The Nature Conservancy, Sierra Club, Natural Resources Defense Council, and World Wildlife Fund, have been taken over by corporate and neoliberal ideologies; How prominent advocates of degrowth and alternative economic models, such as Jason Hickel, Tim Jackson, Kate Raworth, and Timothée Parrique, are unwittingly supporting the many growth agendas of mainstream economics while also peddling population denialism and human supremacy; Why Social Ecological Economics provides a scientific and ethical basis for degrowth economics that considers the rights of nature and of people. Recently, I posed a question on social media: “When you became vegan, what did you do with any products that were made of leather?” The responses were enlightening and sparked a lot of personal reflection. Just two weeks before I went vegan, I bought a white fur jacket that I absolutely loved. But, since then, I've been conflicted about keeping it.   Throughout this episode, I'll be sharing my journey in trying to find a clearer answer. We'll explore the ethical differences between leather shoes and a fur coat, and why I still wear my leather footwear but haven't touched that jacket. Is there really a difference, or am I just rationalising my choices?   We'll also hear from other vegans who chose to donate their leather items to charity shops, and discuss a powerful comment from a Facebook user who said, “Wearing them felt barbaric once I had my ethical position clear in my own mind.” This got me thinking about speciesism and waste, and how they tie into our vegan values.   “There is no difference between fur and leather.” “What do I do with this fur jacket? I just think throwing it away is so disrespectful… it's trashing it. and wearing it is dishonouring what I believe in…” “I haven't got a ‘this is right, this is wrong'” Is Rachel still in that place at the end of the episode? Many vegans gave their leather products to charity shops. “Wearing them felt barbaric once I had my ethical position clear in my own mind.” Speciesism is incompatible with veganism “From the beginning of this episode to now I'm finding out much more information.” “This is my process of working it through – you're with me on this journey!”     Valuable Resources The Elephant In The Room blog: https://theresanelephantintheroomblog.wordpress.com/2019/11/19/about-the-words-we-use-waste/?fbclid=IwZXh0bgNhZW0CMTAAAR1hBLZHUUhQsvAdeFcQksMJ7gFYVC45L83HE2niJjDebzm9LjUSlAemmbk_aem_AQY-0jimeOiqv7dSRPWesn0ocfdixLsuq6N-B93QOpiBMSR9n_QloN2ZuzTZ0Vr-K8qV5hQRbTeSRd-Mmbxyvzqt   For an extensive list of foods with their carb, fat and protein count, go here: https://www.rachelgtherapy.co.uk/1-what-why-and-how For a keto-vegan start-up menu and shopping list go here: https://www.rachelgtherapy.co.uk/1-what-why-and-how   Host Bio Rachel, a once morbidly obese individual, experienced a remarkable body transformation through the keto diet. An unfortunately longevous legacy of feminism--particularly its liberal brand from the 1970s--is a willful disregard for and violent erasure of ecological politics, specifically species justice. In her 2011 essay "Ecofeminism Revisited: Rejecting Essentialism and Replacing Species in a Material Feminist Environmentalism", Greta Gaard surveys the rise and fall of ecofeminist scholarship and activism, noting its frequent clashes with the mainstream. Inspired both by her work and its references, as well as our own academic pursuits into the ecological critique of gender liberation, this is a conversation that has been long in the making. Like you, they are capable of suffering and have an interest in leading their own lives. PETA opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview, and focuses its attention on the four areas in which the largest numbers of animals suffer the most intensely for the longest periods of time: in laboratories, in the food industry, in the clothing trade, and in the entertainment business. We also work on a variety of other issues, including the cruel killing of rodents, birds, and other animals who are often considered “pests” as well as cruelty to domesticated animals. PETA works through public education, investigative newsgathering and reporting, research, animal rescue, legislation, special events, celebrity involvement, and protest campaigns. “Speciesism being socially learned is probably our most dominant theory of why we think we're getting the results that we're getting. But to be very clear, this is super early research. We have a lot more work to do. And it's actually not just in the context of speciesism that we're finding this stuff. So basically we've run some studies showing that while adults will prioritize humans over even very large numbers of animals in sort of tragic trade-offs, children are much more likely to prioritize humans and animals lives similarly. So an adult will save one person over a hundred dogs or pigs, whereas children will save, I think it was two dogs or six pigs over one person. And this was children that were about five to 10 years old. So often when you look at biases in development, so something like minimal group bias, that peaks quite young.”Matti WilksWhat does our understanding of human-animal interaction imply for human-robot interaction? Is speciesism socially learned? Does expanding the moral circle dilute it? Why is there a correlation between naturalness and acceptableness? What are some potential interventions for moral circle expansion and spillover from and to animal advocacy?Matti Wilks is a lecturer (assistant professor) in psychology at the University of Edinburgh. She uses approaches from social and developmental psychology to explore barriers to prosocial and ethical behavior—right now she is interested in factors that shape how we morally value others, the motivations of unusually altruistic groups, why we prefer natural things, and our attitudes towards cultured meat. Matti completed her PhD in developmental psychology at the University of Queensland, Australia, and was a postdoc at Princeton and Yale Universities.Topics discussed in the episode:Introduction (0:00)What matters ethically? What Speciesism Has To Do With Racism, Sexism & Homophobia—Writer & Academic Christopher Sebastian McJetters

This week I'm joined by writer and academic Christopher Sebastian McJetters. We're talking about what speciesism—the view that certain species should have more rights to freedom and life than others—has to do with racism, sexism, and homophobia. Following our recent episode with Jasmin Singer about help being more vegan-friendly, I was thrilled to hear some of you were inspired to try eating more plant-based. It's a resolution that a lot of people are making in the month of January, as we try on those New Year's resolutions. (There's even a campaign called Veganuary that can help.) But I wanted to have this broader conversation with Christopher about why caring about animal rights is a social justice issue that is related to being anti-racist, anti-sexist, and anti-homophobic. My hope is listening will help deepen your resolve to eat more plant-based for the animals/environment/health, or at least expand your circle of compassion a little wider. I hope you find this conversation helpful, empathy-building, and inspiring.  -- Christopher Sebastian is an author, researcher, and lecturer. He writes about food, politics, media, and pop culture. He currently teaches news writing for social media and has guest lectured at Columbia University, Cambridge University, Cornell, and the University of Oxford. Find out more about him at https://www.christophersebastian.info/ -- HOUSEKEEPING NOTE: As you might have noticed, I'm moving the podcast to biweekly for the time being so that I don't burn out and don't have to bug you quite as often about fundraising to support the podcast. I still will sometimes, but not as much. (@rachel-krantz on venmo, icymi :)) Thank you so much to everyone who has supported the podcast thus far, and I promise that even though it'll be slightly less frequent, the quality will hopefully be that much better.

Author M. C. Ronen (Maya Cohen-Ronen) is a New Zealand based vegan, feminist, and animal rights activist. She wrote The Liberation Trilogy out of disappointment at being unable to find mainstream books that avoid banal mentions of animal cruelty acts and/or everyday speciesism. Her deliberate intention was to create an exciting, fast-paced, page-turning fiction series that has a clear ethical undertone and message with a potential appeal to a wide range of readers.    M.C. Ronen has always been a book junkie. She loves fast-paced, suspenseful thrillers, full of plot-twists and cliff-hangers that made her heart race is her preference.  Upon going vegan she discovered to her surprise and dismay that she could no longer enjoy books as she did before.  Suddenly she could no longer find any reading material – at least, not anything that was 'safe'.  Now, every book she picked up, whether recommended to her by a friend, promoted on mainstream media, a best seller, or randomly picked up in the bookstore – every book there was seemed to ooze with at least one of the following: Speciesism, animal cruelty or even blatant anti-vegan sentiments.  Slowly she found herself reading less and less. The wonderful door to a universe of imaginary worlds was closing. Around 2016 she made a decision - if it didn't exist, she would write it myself!  This was the catalyst for The Liberation Trilogy being born. During this episode of the Vegan Visibility Podcast, M.C. Ronen and I dig deep into what led her down the path of writing that she is on. Writing is just one of the many ways she is an animal activist. More information: MCRonenAuthor.com More information on Vegan Visibility www.veganvisibility.com

Speciesism is live and well - but should it be? It's a world order that most people don't even think to question. We put it on the agenda. We also rescued Baby Yoda and Maleficent, two dogs in need of extra care & love. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Today we have Dr. Lynn Sneddon of the University of Gothenburg in Sweden, she is aleading researcher of animal welfare and is particularly interested in aquatic animals. Sheasks questions like “do fish experience pain?”, how can we minimise the suffering of fishwhen we catch them and overall promote a better and more humane fishing industry. Wechat about recreational fishing, spearfishing and commercial fishing and how they compare. She also gives us some tips and advice on caring for your catch, the best way to dispatchand store your fresh catch and how catch and release fishing can better look after the fish. The best way for you to care for your catch is using barbless hooks, knotless nets and if youare going to eat them, kill them quickly and efficiently. Do NOT let them suffocate, it is badfor the fish and it spoils the meat. Is harvesting your own meat or buying it from the storemore ethical? Sticks and stones can break my bones, but words can never hurt me. That's the old saying. But, what if the opposite is true? Today's language denigrates animals with many common phrases encouraging cruelty and violence against animals. Now that the cat's out of the bag should be kill two birds with one stone? Or should we feed two birds with one scone to liberate language from the bondage of speciesism? Today's guest is the vegan/animal rights author of a trilogy of novels, literature that does not accept animal exploitation as a given. Author Maya Cohen-Ronen discovered speciesism-free fiction books are very difficult to find. Fiction that deliberately promotes animal rights and veganism is all too rare. It was this realization that led her to write The Liberation Trilogy, a series of dystopian suspense novels with a strong female lead and an ethical message, suitable for vegans and pre-vegans. Now, Maya discusses the importance of compassion in language and the connection between feminism and animal liberation. Lucky Number 7! This week's podcast will teach you to stop saying that God got you, because he clearly doesn't! While we on that topic, is God on vacation right now? Cuz the world is all sorts of fucked up. The crew also calls out people who mean the opposite of what they're really saying before focusing their attention on male gossipers. Z talks about Speciesism (what the F*** is that?). Prezy asks us what are biggest fears are when inviting people over then Chunky Monkey tells us why he hates his neighbors. There's tons more so TUNE IN.

In Episode 88 I sit down with Seb Alex to talk about the importance of animal welfare and what life looks like through the lens of an Animal Activist. Specifically we cover: Normalising veganism The impossible burger: Does he eat it and what does he think about their practices? Things to consider when supporting large chains like Hungry Jacks who have added vegan burgers onto their menu What is a vegan? What is a sentient being? Different levels of sentience Are oysters sentient beings? What is speciesism? Growing up in Lebanon and his transition to a vegetarian diet and then ultimately a vegan diet Is veganism extreme? Developing the courage to be an activist The notion of 'humane' slaughter - does it exist? Ag-Gag laws protecting the animal agriculture industry and much much more I completely understand this episode and the topic of animal welfare is often a little uncomfortable (I totally get it) and perhaps you have a stereotypical view of an animal activist being angry, weird and violent. I know I used to. Today's guest, Animal Activist Seb Alex, is anything but that and I urge all of you, vegan or not, to listen to this conversation with an open mind. Even if you're not interested in veganism it's interesting to listen to what people from different walks of lives have to say…how they see the world. 10 years ago if I came across this podcast - I would probably keep scrolling. In fact I definitely would of. I often think about my early University days and why I never stopped to think about eating animal products. I grew up loving dogs and farm animals…but I never once fully appreciated the connection between my food plate with an animals life and how my consumption affected their happiness. The odd thing is I look back on myself a decade ago and I see the same person…the values and beliefs were there but I was closed. I was not in a place to allow new ideas to challenge the way I had been programmed. Now that I understand the power of opening your mind I have discussions with people all the time who see things differently to me not just about nutrition but all things in life. I can escape the echo chamber that we so often comfortably find ourselves in. A place where there is the natural tendency to only surround yourself with people who share your thoughts. I always walk away from these conversations. Happy that they give me the opportunity to challenge my beliefs and think a little deeper. Happy they gave me an opportunity to learn something new. It's these types of conversations that allow our minds to expand. You may find todays message resonates with you. You may find it takes you to places in your mind that you have never visited. You may find it doesn't. The point is, you will be better informed with regards to how an animal activist sees the world, you will better understand their perspective and then with that you can do what you want! If this isnt an episode for you right now -thats completely fine, jump over to any number of previous episodes on nutrition and come back to this one when it feels right.
