Animal advocacy on the airwaves, hosted by a team of local animal advocates.
This episode is dedicated to animal rights and vegan activist Liz Dealey or Lizzie as she was affectionately known. Lizzie was tireless and relentless in her aim to bring more kindness and consideration into the world. Her whirlwind energy saw her found Melbourne Chicken Save, and dedicate decades of focus, passion and time into the animal rights activist landscape, especially in Melbourne. Her inclusive leadership, her sense of humour, the heart on her sleeve way she carried herself, and her punk rock energy endeared her to several generations of activists. Lizzie's life and works are remembered here in this episode by Stace from Melbourne Chicken Save, Pam Ahern from Edgar's Mission, and with written tributes by many more. Some of Liz's music histroy: The Sputniks (1979-1980) - Liz on Bass 'Second Glance / Our Boys' (1979) Acid drops (1982-1985) - Liz on Vocals & Guitar 'Surfin' Prostitute Beat' (1984) The Twenty Second Sect (1986-1991) - Liz on Vocals & Guitar 'The Wailing House' (1986) 'Get That Charge' (1988) 'UXB' (1989) 'Unexploded' (1989) Pure Purple - Liz on Vocals & Guitar 'Demo Album' (unreleased) Music played: 'Kiss My Ass' Pure Purple (from 'Demo Album' - 90's) 'Hey Baby' The Twenty Second Sect (from 'Unexploded' - 1989) 'I'll Be Your Navigator' The Twenty Second Sect (from 'Get That Charge' - 1988) 'Look Her In The Eye' Pure Purple (from 'Demo Album' - 90's) 'Abbatoir' Pure Purple (from 'Demo Album' - 90's)

Dr. Leila Dehghan is a doctor-turned-nutritionist, activist, and educator. Her journey to veganism began as an animal rescuer, but she later discovered the healing power of a whole food, plant-based diet, which helped her overcome debilitating migraines. This experience shifted her career focus, leading her to earn a Master's in Clinical and Public Health Nutrition from University College London. Leila is the founder of Plant-based Health Justice, a nonprofit dedicated to raising awareness about the interconnectedness of oppression and advocating for a healthier, sustainable world by fostering justice, equity, and compassion for all. Her passion for education also led her to create PlantEd Academy, where she develops courses, workshops, and resources that promote the benefits of plant-based diets in a culturally sensitive and inclusive way. Through her work, she challenges Eurocentric dietary norms and empowers individuals and communities to decolonize nutrition and reclaim their health. In today's show, an introduction to the wool series, Betty and Trev respond to a podcast episode called ‘Wearing Hair' from ‘Articles of Interest' by Avery Trufelman. We discuss the concept of wearing human hair textiles as an alternative biomaterial as spearheaded by the Dutch company ‘Human Material Loop' asking… is it vegan to wear human hair? We go on to unpack some of the inherent ethical issues with sheep's wool as a material and critique the wool advocacy of author and knitting influencer, Clara Parkes. In 2008 during the Greek Austerity riots, a strange phenomena was born. Stray dogs began joining in the protests in Athens Greece against the IMF and their austerity measures directed toward every day citizens. These good boys and girls would voluntarily join protests and actively try to protect protesters against the police and their violence, siding always with the demonstrators. Photographers and videographers were the first to notice that the same dogs were turning up day after day, barking at the police, grabbing and running away with tear gas cannisters and otherwise trying to help their human comrades. They became known as the Riot Dogs.... And again in Chile during the 2011-2013 student protests, arguably of the most famous of the riot dogs, The Black Matapacos, joined the protests to protect his human comrades in the fight against oppressive neoliberal policies. From the actions of these brave dogs spawned an avalanche of songs, artwork, documentaries and even a game celebrating their inspiration and their lives. This is their story... We need to talk about an issue that doesn't get as much discussion as it needs. It's a particularly important topic right now with the state of the world and the exhaustion some activists are feeling. Today we are talking about activist burnout, what it means, how we get to this point and what both the individual activist and the justice movements as a whole can do to prevent it happening and create a supportive, understanding and sustainable structure where activists can continue to do the good work while also giving back to themselves, nurturing their relationships and ensuring they don't give away pieces of themselves. Sometimes if we take a look at how animals were percieved in the past, it can give us new insight into our perceptions of animals today. Join Meg and Trev to discuss how people in Medieval times in Europe perceived animals wild, domesticated and fantastical. We look at how the dominant paradigms of the times (Paganism and Christianity) affected how different animals were treated, the unique relationships peope of the time had with animals, how the different classes of people viewed animals, and take a look at human art from the Medieval period in the form of colourful depictions of animals in books known as Bestiaries, animals in music and also animals in stories and legends of the time. Can we say for sure that Medieval times were more brutal for animals than they are now, or is this a myth? What unexpected animal was closely associated with Christain divinity in the Middle Ages? How did people's perceptions of animals change as Christianity became the dominant religion? What animal pulled the Norse goddess Freya's chariot? These questions and more will be answered in this history based show. On this show we discuss Disrupt Land Forces, the coalition of community groups who created a week long festival of resistance bringing diverse actionists and tactics into the joined struggle against the arms trade. Land Forces is the largest land based weapons expo in the Southern Hemisphere, and it was held at the Melbourne Exhibition and Convention Centre in Naarm/Melbourne in September 2024. Protestors were met with excessive use of force by police including the use of OC spray, rubber bullets, flash-bangs, physical violence and riding horses into the crowd resulting in injuries. On this show we welcome back Zane McNeill to discuss their new edited collection: Building Multispecies Resistance Against Exploitation: Stories from the Frontline of Labor and Animal Rights (published by Peter Lang, 2024). This incredible collection of contributions from activists and scholars about the structures of violence and oppression that are shared by human and non-human labourers working and dying in necropolitical facilities. The book also asks readers to consider the intersection between class and species, race, gender and other categories of oppression, and the ways that the contemporary Animal Activist Non-profit Sector (AANS) upholds hierarchies in its mission towards animal liberation. There are some powerful examples of successful social and political campaigns that we can draw from and that can help us to build strategic alliances and coalitions between social movements and political subjects. Zane McNeill is a scholar-activist, 15-year vegan, and National Lawyers Guild's Animal Liberation Committee chair. They have worked closely with the Institute of Critical Animal Studies (ICAS) and have published chapters in ICAS collections, including Vegans on Speciesism and Ableism: Ecoability Voices for Disability and Animal Justice and Expanding the Critical Animal Studies Imagination: Essays on Solidarity and Total Liberation. He has also edited Queer and Trans Voices: Achieving Liberation Through Consistent Anti-Oppression, Vegan Entanglements: Dismantling Racial and Carceral Capitalism, and Building Multispecies Resistance Against Exploitation: Stories from the Frontlines of Labor and Animal Rights. Would aliens treat us the way we treat animals? If aliens landed today and we made first contact, what would be the outcome for us? Could we justify expecting compassionate treatment from a technologically superior civilisation when we ourselves cannot show this compassion for those we see as inferior? Meg delves into the idea of first contact in all its manifestations, how this might go for us, and how the knowledge we are not alone might change our ideas of all life on earth and how we treat that life. In light of the recent legislation to end Australia's live sheep trade by May 2028, Nick and Adam reflect on the history of the stop live export campaign. More specifically, the show covers: alliances between animal activists and slaughterhouse workers, “animal nationalism” and debates about the campaign within the movement. We discuss what animal activists can learn from this history, regardless of which campaign/s they're focused on. When we discuss the history of the campaign, we primarily draw on Gonzalo Villanueva's book – A Transnational History of the Australian Animal Movement, 1970–2015: https://www.palgrave.com/gp/book/9783319625867 Additional links: Corey Wrenn's essay – Banning Live Export in Australia: https://www.coreyleewrenn.com/banning-live-export-in-australia/ Colin Salter's talk – Normativity, Intersectionality and States of Exception: https://archive.org/details/ColinSalter Check out Adam's Spotify playlist – Animal Lib & Vegan Songs: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5hVygGomw9zax38quC6mhi?si=c14b3a19ccf74d67 Music: Animal liberation by Los Fastidios: https://www.losfastidios.net/ Pig by Weezer: https://weezer.lnk.to/music Seoul by Shoreline: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KCxBdmVVlt8&pp=ygUQc2hvcmVsaW5lIHNlb3VsIA%3D%3D Dirty work by Ruby Gill: https://rubygill.bandcamp.com/track/dirty-work
On today's Freedom of species show, Meg takes you on a journey of the mind, tackling the all pervasive idea that humans are the most important species on the planet. We look at the history of this paradigm, and how it influences all aspects of our society and drives our activities of progress and expansion, and the ways this has been disastrous to the animals that share our planet and the natural ecosystems they live in. Can we dismantle and leave behind this destructive philosophy, or will we reign supreme over the planet to the detriment of all the other beings who reside here with us? Let's find out. Meg and guest Lydia Lobb discuss just how pervasive and insidious animal exploitation paradigms are in our education systems at all levels. From kinder milk programs to rodeo fundraisers and free fishing rods, animal exploitation seems to be baked into our education system in Australia. We talk about many examples and the difficulties of navigating the system when raising compassionate kids. Have things gotten better over time? What was it like for our generation? Our parents generation? And will it become better for future generations? In today's show, Betty and Nick launch into part 2 about the animals and ecosystems in and around the Korean Demilitarized Zone. We share some history of how and why the DMZ barrier was reinforced and the relationship between landmines, the ecology and civilians in the area. We share the story of how a pre-industrial rice paddy irrigation pond is providing habitats for a variety of species and why the future of this zone still remains so uncertain. We discuss different theories of peace and how animal survival is often in conflict with capitalist interests. Our political, societal and legislative landscape is changed by the information whistleblowers and activists bring to light, and in the current legal and political system, they often do this at great cost to themselves and their families. In today's show, Meg and Trev explore what this means for the activists who collect and disseminate footage from slaughterhouses, farms and other locations within the animal agriculture industry, and how our country's current 'Ag Gag' laws actively discourage and restrict the truth of what is occuring from being made public. This show aired on Mother's Day today in Australia and our discussion covers heavy topics such as violence, death and the genocide in Palestine. We recognise that trauma is widespread and that many listeners may have experienced traumatic events in their lives, and so mention these topics up front. Mother's Day:We discuss issues of speciesism around animal mothers and talk about the story of Clarabelle the cow and her baby Valentine who are living together at Edgar's Mission Farm Sanctuary. https://edgarsmission.org.au/animal/clarabelle-and-valentine/Video story https://vimeo.com/415803158 Families for Palestine on Instagram carousel Honouring Palestinian Mothers https://www.instagram.com/familiesforpalestine/ 269 Liberation Animale: aims to raise awareness about the animal cause and to inform people about the non-necessity of living animals. It works to take into account the fundamental interests of sentient beings: the right to life, to liberty, to dignity. She is anti-speciesist and abolitionist, and organises street theater based on the reality of what humans do to other animals. Benefit compilation for (by Total Liberation Records) for 269 Liberation Animale, an activist collective targeting speciesist industries by blockading slaughterhouses, freeing animals and sabotaging places. We spoke about APEX Advocacy, an organisation founded by Christopher ‘Soul' Eubanks focused on building a community of BIPOC animal rights advocates by empowering their activism and providing resources and support. APEX aims to increase the number of BIPOC individuals who participate in animal activism by advocating for collective liberation through animal rights, particularly in marginalized areas and communities that are disproportionately affected by the animal industrial complex. In order to effectively eradicate animal industries, we maintain that the grassroots animal advocacy movement must actively welcome and amplify BIPOC voices, build bridges with other movements and communities, and recognize the interconnectedness between various systems of oppression. We spoke about the recent blog published by APEX Advocacy called Complicity & Selective Compassion: Making Sense of the Animal Rights Movement's Silence on the Palestinian GenocideIn their blog, APEX Advocacy made a really impactful and important statement directed at the animal rights movement denouncing its acquiescence to genocide, its capitulation to the imperial donor class, and it's selective ‘compassion' which excludes Palestinians - an exclusion rooted in anti-blackness and white supremacy. Mutual Aid:Plant the Land Team Gaza is a vegan food justice and community projects volunteer team based in Gaza, co-founded by Anas Arafat, a Gazan humanitarian aid activist, and Laura Schleifer, a USAmerican vegan, Free Palestine solidarity activist and Total Liberation Campaign Director at the Institute for Critical Animal Studies. Plant the Land Team buys and distributes vegan food, plants food forests, and provides Gazan farmers with seeds and planting tools. Previous fundraising projects have also included providing plant-based insulin to children with diabetes, providing medical treatment, providing warm winter coats and blankets made from plant-based materials, and our yearly vegan food fundraiser for Ramadan. They are also currently in the midst of a campaign to construct a village water well. On a previous show we aired an interview with Laura Schleifer by Dr Leila Deghan here. The song's title was inspired by Hind Rajab — the six-year-old Palestinian girl killed by the Israeli military — and the name pro-Palestine student protesters at Columbia University gave to a building on their campus, Hamilton Hall, as they waved Palestine's flag up high before the police attacked them. Macklemore is donating all proceeds from the sale of this song to UNWRA. Find it on Spotify here. Radiothon is coming up at 3CR for the month of June. Join us as we revisit the fascinating and ongoing saga of orcas attacking boats off the Iberian Peninsula. Since May of 2020 orcas have been attacking, damaging and in some cases sinking boats off the Iberian Peninsula between Morocco, Portugal and Spain, and no one knows for certain why. What are their motives? How has this negative human/orca interaction played out? Is it escalating? What will the clashes lead to? Our guest Kristy Alger from Animal Liberation Tasmania shares updates from their extensive campaign Defund TasRacing. ALT has released extensive videos and photos showing the reality of life for greyhounds on trainer, owner and breeder properties in Tasmania. The conditions that greyhounds are kept in, for often up to 23 hours a day are truly shocking. The campaign has had great impact including mass media coverage, and recongition from multiple politicians and with an upcoming state election is putting greyhounds firmly on the election agenda. We also talk about the duck shooting campaign in Tasmania which has just opened this weekend, and the low attendance yesterday at the primary public waterway at Moulting Lagoon. Finally, we chat about Kristy's writing and what she's working on now. On this show we speak with Dr Leila Dehgan, doctor, plant-based nutritionist and Founding Director of Plant-based Health Justice. Born in Tehran, Iran, and raised in Vienna, Austria, Leila is a plant-based nutritionist and social justice activist. With a background in medicine, Leila had to pivot her career path due to debilitating migraines.Although Leila's journey to veganism started as an animal rescuer, she later discovered the power of a whole food plant-based diet and healed her migraines through diet. This experience shifted her professional interests. She pursued a Plant-Based Nutrition Certificate at eCornell, part of Cornell University, and obtained a Master's of Science degree in Clinical and Public Health Nutrition from University College London. Navigating life as a vegan of colour and an immigrant in Austria and the UK, she brings a unique awareness of the intersectionality of different social identities and injustices. Leila passionately champions an anti-oppressive approach within the realms of animal rights and vegan activism, leading her to found Plant-based Health Justice, a non-profit social justice charity dedicated to cultivating justice, equity, and compassion to create a healthier and more sustainable world for all.
