In this episode, host Tricia Friedman sits down with Dr. Michael Greger, bestselling author and founder of NutritionFacts.org, to explore why non-commercial, evidence-based health guidance matters more than ever. They discuss lifestyle medicine, plant-based nutrition, scientific integrity, cannabis research, and how small, testable behavior changes can dramatically improve long-term health. What This Conversation Is Really About Health advice is everywhere — but trustworthy guidance is not. This conversation slows things down and examines how to make informed choices in a noisy, commercialized health landscape, without absolutism, hype, or fear-based messaging. Dr. Greger shares: Why he donates 100% of book proceeds to charity How lifestyle medicine transformed his own family's health What the science actually says about cannabis — both risks and benefits Why updating guidance as evidence evolves is a strength, not a weakness How social support, not willpower, determines whether health changes last Key Topics Covered Why non-commercial health information matters How financial incentives distort nutrition and medical guidance — and how to recognize bias. Lifestyle medicine in practice Diet, movement, and daily habits as powerful tools for disease prevention and reversal. Plant-based eating (defined clearly) What "plant-based" actually means — and what it doesn't. Cannabis: separating evidence from ideology What newer human studies reveal about cancer risk, pain management, and safer use. Scientific uncertainty and misinformation How peer-reviewed research works, where it fails, and how to interpret studies responsibly. Behavior change that sticks Why short-term "experiments," bodily feedback, and social support outperform rigid rules. Who This Episode Is For Listeners overwhelmed by conflicting health advice Educators, parents, and caregivers navigating cannabis conversations Anyone curious about plant-based nutrition without extremism People interested in evidence-based, non-commercial wellness guidance Listeners looking for sustainable, realistic behavior change About the Guest Dr. Michael Greger is a physician, internationally recognized speaker, and New York Times bestselling author of How Not to Die. Have you ever tried to make a big change, but then struggled without guidance or support? That was Dawn's case, a past client of mine. In this episode, I'm sharing with you her story. Dawn is a full-time nurse with a family of five. She had tried to go vegan on her own previously but stopped soon afterwards when she began feeling hungry and often weak. Then a year later, she met me and we began working together. The result? Through coaching, she began to experience more energy, and felt healthier and stronger in her body. She felt more emotionally happy and is now able to stay confidently plant-powered, even as her family continues a regular diet. Let's see just much easier and more enjoyable plant-based eating can get with the RIGHT support and guidance! Diet has become one of the most polarizing topics in modern health. Whether it's carnivore, keto, or veganism, conversations around food can quickly become divisive. But beyond the noise and online debates — how do you actually determine the best way to eat for your health, longevity, and heart? In this episode, I sit down with Dr. Joel Kahn, an integrative cardiologist often referred to as “America's Healthy Heart Doc.” After decades practicing conventional cardiology, Dr. Kahn shifted his focus toward preventative medicine — emphasizing nutrition, early testing, and lifestyle strategies to help patients avoid heart disease altogether. Dr. Kahn shares his evidence-based approach to heart disease prevention, including how he helps patients identify and treat risk factors ten years before a potential heart attack. We dive into the science behind different diets, what research actually shows about plant-based nutrition, and why personalization — not dogma — is key when it comes to both food and medication. We also explore the connection between hormones and cardiovascular health, the role of post-menopausal hormone therapy in prevention, and what tests you should consider before ever starting statins. If you care about protecting your heart—and cutting through the confusion around diet and prevention—this is an episode you don't want to miss. Episode Highlights: Dr. Kahn's transition from traditional cardiology to preventive and integrative care His lifelong passion for nutrition and functional wellness The simple rule everyone should follow for a heart-healthy diet Research-backed benefits of plant-forward eating Why statin therapy should be personalized, not automatic The most important tests to request before taking statins How hormone therapy after menopause impacts heart health The vital link between hormonal balance and cardiovascular function Dr. Kahn's top testing recommendations for early heart disease detection Connect with Dr. Joel Kahn Dr. Joel Kahn's Website | DrJoelKahn.com Dr. Joel Kahn's Clinic | Kahn Longevity Center Dr. Joel Kahn on Instagram | @DrJKahn Dr. Joel Kahn's Podcast | Heart Doc VIP with Dr. Joel Kahn Dr. Joel Kahn's Books | View Dr. Joel Kahn's Library Dr. Joel Kahn on The Joe Rogan Experience | Listen To The Full Episode Dr. Kahn's Joe Rogan Experience Podcast Reference Guide | View The Reference Guide Episode Resources: Dr. Shawn Tassone's Practice | Tassone Advanced Gynecology Dr. Shawn Tassone's Book | The Hormone Balance Bible Dr. Shawn Tassone's Integrative Hormonal Mapping System | Hormonal Archetype Quiz Medical Disclaimer This podcast and website represent the opinions of Dr. Shawn Tassone and his guests. Reforming SNAP. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program—formerly known as food stamps—is designed to address nutritional gaps for economically disadvantaged Americans. But critics argue that SNAP's lack of selectivity when it comes to ultra-processed foods stokes the current epidemic of obesity and metabolic disorders. Nutritionist Carolina Schneider, MS, RD, joins us to discuss an opportunity to reform SNAP. She makes the case for emphasizing fresh, minimally processed food as eligible for purchase under SNAP. Also, she urges inclusion of vitamin D under SNAP benefits because of the pervasiveness of vitamin D deficiency, especially among SNAP recipients. Check out a hub for citizen activism at www.All4VitaminD.org. In Part 2, we shift to consideration of plant-based diets: What are their advantages, and what are potential pitfalls?
Dr. Hoffman continues his conversation with Carolina Schneider, MS, RD.
Do you wish you had more money to spend on groceries so you can buy more fresh fruits and vegetables to enjoy better health? Well, what if I told you that you don't need MORE money …but you have to first learn to stretch your shopping dollars – in the store and at home. This way, you can get MORE with each dollar that you do spend. Because here's the reality…there's a lot of food waste going around, and most households are losing significant amounts of produce AND money every week…from simply not knowing how to store produce, to not knowing how best to use what we do buy and bring back home. Let's change that. I want to help you maximize your shopping dollars and enjoy more of the fruits and veggies you bring home. Let's see how to do that with one specific vegetable, often used in homecooked meals. And that's cauliflower. Join me inside this episode!
