A decade after the release of the 2014 award-winning documentary Cowspiracy, filmmakers Kip Anderson and Keegan Kuhn come together with Atlanta animal activists and scholars in a webinar on May 21st 2024 to discuss the impact of the film and the status/progress/strategies of the vegan movement today. Facilitated by host Dr. Natalie Khazaal, a critical animal studies scholar and Associate Professor at Georgia Tech (the webinar was funded by a grant from her department, the School of Modern Languages), this 57-minute webinar allows the filmmakers to answer questions from GA Tech students and Atlanta animal activists (including me, In Tune to Nature host Carrie Freeman) where we discuss: which few environmental orgs actually have the integrity to campaign to reduce or replace animal ag, knowing its immense environmental destructiveness (shout out to the Center for Biological Diversity and the Western Watershed Project); the pros and cons of lab-grown/cultivated meats (esp. good for pet food); the need to campaign against animal ag subsidies and regenerative ag/holistic grazing myths and for divestment from animal ag; and how best to persuasively connect with people, such as using ethical/animal rights messages, and bypassing cognitive dissonance in favor of carnism/meat-eating. We also mention other impactful animal/food documentaries, as Kip and Keegan run AUM (Animals United Movement) Film and Media company https://www.aumfilms.org/ , a nonprofit that produces provocative full-length films inspiring healthy coexistence, such as Seaspiracy, What the Health, and the End of Medicine. Christpiracy is the latest film, which addresses spiritual/ethical and religious tenets in support of abstaining from farming/eating other animals. For studies I have published in the Environmental Communication journal analyzing environmental organizations' campaigns related to animal ag and commercial fishing and the need for greater critiques, see Take Extinction Off Your Plate (2022) and Meat's Place on the Campaign Menu (2010). Both found on my open-access site https://works.bepress.com/carrie_freeman/ In Tune to Nature is a weekly show airing on Wednesdays from 6:30-7pm EST on Atlanta indie station WRFG (Radio Free Georgia) 89.3FM hosted by Carrie Freeman or Melody Paris. Please consider donating to support this 50plus-year old independent, progressive Atlanta radio station at www.wrfg.org Note: I edited the original webinar to fit the radio format to be under an hour. Take care of yourself and others, including other species...by supporting animal activism and veganic/produce farming.

New Zealand, also known as Aotearoa, produces approximately 21 billion liters of milk every year, or about 3% of the world's milk production (95% of which are exported to more than 130 countries worldwide). Isn't that great? But wait until you see the impact of dairy farming on the environment. Today we will talk about a fantastic film co-produced by a passionate Māori activist Chris Huriwai, co-founder of the animal rights project Aotearoa Liberation League. Chris is a vegan advocate and 3-time world champion for street unicycling. So, why should we care about Chris and this film? MILKED is a documentary that features interviews with high-profile contributors like primatologist and anthropologist Dr. Jane Goodall, environmentalist Suzy Amis Cameron, and Cowspiracy co-director Keegan Kuhn. The film reveals the harsh reality behind the seemingly idyllic and green dairy farming tale in New Zealand, uncovering alarming information about the impacts of the industry on the environment and health of the dairy farming community. MILKED presents evidence that we are on the edge of probably the biggest disruption of food and agriculture in history. It points to what New Zealand and other countries can do to prevent the destruction of their environment and change their fate. What we discuss in this episode: -First, let's hear about Dotsie's amazing work in partnership with Animal Wellness Action to change laws and policies for the animals. She also campaigned for improving the school lunch program to include soy milk in schools. -Chris talks about his life as a Maori child and how homeschooling shaped his view of the world. -How did his family react when he moved away from consuming animal products? -Chris shares what it's like inside Fonterra, the largest NZ dairy farm, and how its dairy farming operation is impacting the water supply in the area. -What impetus led Chris to make a film, and why focus on Fonterra? -Did Chris think Fonterra would answer the questions and be open to discussing the issues at hand? -Is Chris expecting a backlash from Fonterra, and are there claims that the film is attacking the dairy farmers? -How do cows live in Aotearoa? It looks idyllic and green, but what is the real picture? -Fonterra exports 95% of its products, and the company is expanding its operations in Indonesia. But what is the true impact of this move? -Do small dairy farmers benefit from large capitalistic companies? How can they adjust to a different life with the agricultural destruction? What subsidies are available to them? -What would people walk away with after watching the film? -What's next for Chris Huriwai? -Watch MILKED on these platforms - https://milked.film/, https://join.waterbear.com/, and https://www.youtube.com/plantbasednews -Connect with Chris Huriwai on Instagram and Facebook -Check out Chris Huriwai's YT Channel - https://www.youtube.com/c/ChrisHuriwai -Use code SWITCH for 25% off your order at MaxinesHeavenly.com -Purality B12 Deal: https://puralityhealth.com/liposomal-b12/ to buy one B12 and get one free plus 35% off the rest of Purality's products Connect with Switch4Good -YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCQ2toqAmlQpwR1HDF_KKfGg -Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/Switch4Good/ -Podcast Chat Group - https://www.facebook.com/groups/podcastchat/ -Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/switch4good/ -Twitter - https://mobile.twitter.com/Switch4GoodNFT -Website - https://switch4good.org/
Today's episode is with Chris Huriwai who is the Co-Producer of MILKED - White Lies in Dairy Land. This is a project close to our heart as we are humbled to announce that Shukul has been featured as one of the health and nutrition experts in the film! The film will launch on a platform called WaterBear on the 18th of March and we are very excited to see it! Where to watch: https://join.waterbear.com/ Learn more about the project: https://milked.film/ MILKED is a topical feature documentary that exposes the whitewash of New Zealand's multi-billion-dollar dairy industry. Young activist Chris Huriwai travels around the country searching for the truth about how this source of national pride has become the nation's biggest threat. It's rapidly gone from a land with no cows to being the biggest exporter of dairy in the world, but the industry seems to be failing in every way possible. Featuring interviews with high-profile contributors such as Dr Jane Goodall, environmentalist and former actress Suzy Amis Cameron, and Cowspiracy co-director, Keegan Kuhn, MILKED reveals the behind-the-scenes reality of the kiwi dairy farming fairy-tale. It uncovers alarming information about the impacts of the industry on the environment and health, leading up to the discovery that we're on the edge of the biggest global disruption of food and agriculture in history. An impactful global story told with a local eye, the film also points to what New Zealand and other countries can do to change their fate.
In this episode of The MindBodyHealth Podcast I interview Fiona Oakes (and I mustn't forget the star of the show Percy!!). Despite having a knee replacement and no knee cap from the age of 17, and being told she would never walk properly again, Fiona holds 4 Guinness World Records in the marathon and is the fastest woman to run a marathon on all 7 continents and the North Pole. Fiona's why in all these accomplishments is for the animals. Fiona has been vegan nearly 50 years and started Tower Hill Stables Animal Sanctuary in 1993 with the aim of providing love, care and a forever home to previously unwanted or rescued animals, both domestic and ex-farm. The sanctuary now provides a home to around 600 animals. Keegan Kuhn, Co-director of Cowspiracy and What The Health featured Fiona's life and work and accomplishments in his film "Running For Good" in 2018. If you are looking for inspiration then this episode will provide it. Fiona for me is one of the most humble people I have ever met and for me she is one of the truest "humans" I know. I've admired this woman for many years and have had the pleasure to share stage with her on many occasions and to now count her as a friend. I have the privilege and joy to speak to amazing human beings on this podcast and all of the people who generously share their time to be guests touch me in a profound way with their life's missions and journey. One particular guest made me reframe everything I thought I knew about achievement and endurance and the WHY behind doing what we do matters. Her passion and purpose and deep humility simply blew me away. Fiona Oakes is an elite marathon runner and a carer of over 500 animals at the Sanctuary she founded in 1996 - Towerhill Stables Animal Sanctuary. She has competed in over 100 marathons and finished in the top 20 in two of the world's Major Marathon series (Berlin and London), along with winning the Main Start and placing top 20 in the Great North Run. Fiona has been vegan for almost her entire life and in 2012 she became the first vegan woman to complete the grueling Marathon de Sables - a race she has completed twice more since - and in 2013 won the North Pole Marathon and it's 'sister' race the Antarctic Ice Marathon. She now holds four Guinness recognised World Records in endurance events including being the fastest woman to run a Marathon on every Continent. Her successes are even more impressive when one learns she lost a kneecap as a teenager, causing her to experience constant pain when running. She does all this to promote an ethical vegan lifestyle and to raise awareness of her Sanctuary. Fiona is also the subject of a documentary made by prominent film maker - Keegan Kuhn (other notable documentaries in his portfolio include Cowspiracy and What the Health). Fiona personally cares for, on a daily basis, the animals she protects in her Sanctuary. Her entire life is dedicated to the promotion of veganism in a positive, proactive and peaceful way and she is living proof of it's sustainability, longevity and viability for both mental and physical wellbeing. Fiona Oakes life is one dedicated to service and this conversation has changed my outlook on life in many ways and I believe it may do this for you, too. In this discussion with Fiona Oakes, you'll discover: -How veganism chose Fiona; a supportive mother, and a mentor...04:00 -Growing up as a vegan child in a world of naysayers and doubters...10:15 -Tower Hill Stables Animal Sanctuary; home to 500 rescue animals...18:15 -Fiona's love of animals is in her soul; it's always been there...22:20 -A running career fueled by sheer determination to promote veganism...28:00 -Fiona's toughest challenge so far...35:15 -Her take on the difference between vegan and plant-based...37:50 -She hopes the pandemic teaches us all that health is real wealth...43:15 -The Warrior Diet; Fiona's one meal a day...44:00 -2 decades of elite running without any running injuries is a true testament to the viability of a vegan lifestyle...48:35 -Toes crushed by horse hooves and bones protruding at the world's toughest footrace...52:00 -She believes her cavalier ignorance is her greatest strength; the North Pole marathon...57:30 -She advocates for not overthinking; deny anxiety the chance to win...1:00:10 -If you train hard, you'll race hard...1:03:20 -Fiona's goals for the future...1:04:00 -The practices which have benefited and supported Fiona over the years...1:07:40 Resources https://www.fionaoakesfoundation.co.uk/ (Fiona's website) https://www.instagram.com/oakes.fiona/?hl=en (Fiona's Instagram) https://www.facebook.com/fionaoakes (Fiona's Facebook) https://twitter.com/marathonfiend (Fiona's Twitter)

An inside look at They're Trying to Kill Us from the creators of the groundbreaking documentary. John Lewis and Keegan Kuhn join “The Weight Loss Champion” Chuck Carroll to discuss the making of the film and the systemic issues that are driving health inequality in the United States. Why are people of color more likely to die from heart disease, diabetes, and cancer if genetics aren't the reason? Through interviews with celebrities in hip-hop, medicine, sports, entertainment, and politics, John and Keegan discovered the answer. It is perhaps the most deadly threat to society that mainstream media doesn't want to talk about. PCRM will receive 50% of proceeds from the film through Nov. 17, 2021. — — — They're Trying To Kill Us https://killusfilm.com/PCRM — — — John Lewis Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/badassvegan Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/badassvegan Website: https://badassvegan.com — — — Keegan Kuhn Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/firstsparkmedia Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/keeganlkuhn — — — Chuck Carroll Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/chuckcarrollwlc Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/chuckcarrollwlc Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/weightlosschampion — — — Physicians Committee Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/physicianscommittee Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/PCRM.org Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/pcrm — — — 21-Day Vegan Kickstart App iOS: https://bit.ly/VegKStrt-iOS Android: https://bit.ly/VegKStrtAndrd Web: https://www.pcrm.org/kickstart — — — Barnard Medical Center Appointments https://bit.ly/BMCtelemed 202-527-7500 — — — Share the Show Please subscribe and give the show a 5-star rating on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or many other podcast providers. Welcome back to the Plant Based News Podcast. This week's episode we are throwing the spotlight on a fascinating and important new feature documentary called Milked, directed by Amy Taylor which uncovers the disturbing reality of New Zealand's dairy farming industry. Joining us is the film's Co-producer and presenter Chris Huriwai, who embarked on an investigation across Aotearoa (the Māori name for New Zealand) focusing on the destructive impact that animal farming is having on the environment. In the documentary, Chris is featured alongside Suzy Amis Cameron, the former actress turned environmentalist married to Avatar filmmaker James Cameron. We are thrilled that Suzy - one of the film's executive producers - joins us in our discussion today. Also playing a big part of our conversation is Keegan Kuhn, the co-director of the award-winning documentary Cowspiracy, and another executive producer who worked on Milked. As a film that is promising to follow other influential and critically lauded environmental documentaries from the last few years, Milked reveals the behind-the-scenes reality of the kiwi dairy farming fairy-tale. It uncovers alarming information about the impacts of the industry on the planet and our health. According to Cowspiracy: The Sustainability Secret, the main cause of global warming is not fossil fuels such as coal, oil, and natural gas - it’s animal agriculture. In this groundbreaking feature-length environmental documentary from intrepid filmmaker Keegan Kuhn, he uncovers the most destructive industry facing the planet today and investigates why the world’s leading environmental organizations are too afraid to talk about it. In today’s episode of the Plant-based profit show, we talk to Keegan Kuhn, Co-director of Cowspiracy and What The Health and several other acclaimed documentaries, who is a videographer, award-winning documentary filmmaker, and professional musician living in the east bay of San Francisco. Keegan’s film career has taken him as far as the remote interior of Alaska to document modern homesteaders, to the high deserts of the American west filming the nation’s remaining wild horses, to rural agricultural communities and dirty urban streets. He is motivated by a deep desire to shed light on vegan-themed stories and major issues around social justice.

In this episode of The Plant Trainers Podcast, we talk with John Lewis (BadAssVegan) about his new documentary film he co-produced with Keegan Kuhn called "They’re Trying To Kill Us". We kick off the podcast talking about injustice, inequality, dealing with hate and the Black Lives Matter movement. Then we go into some of the details of the film on how black communities are being targeted creating health conditions throughout North America. As per usual, we leave you with actionable tips on how you can make a difference in this world. You may remember John Lewis from The Plant Trainers Podcast number 223 about self-empowerment. He is an international public speaker, serial entrepreneur, wellness advocate, and activist for the wellness of all living beings. Now he can add author, film producer, and director to his resume. John’s education in business coupled with his love for health and fitness gave him the ability to start his venture – Bad Ass Vegan – a health and nutrition company that strives to educate individuals on plant-based nutrition. John’s love for his community brought forth the brainchild of “VeganSmart”, a plant-based protein shake company with a foundation whose mission is to prevent obesity through education, physical activity and plant-based nutrition. Now John is taking on a new challenge as a film director and book author. In this episode we discuss: Music Injustice The jigsaw puzzle Rivegilde Is vegan classist How to deal with the hate 8% of black Americans don’t have access to... Variety and conditioning Pharmaceutical industry Snap Marketing to targeting back community How to help make a change “They’re Trying To Kill Us"
Keegan Kuhn, Shaun Monson, Marc Pierschel and Louie Psihoyos join host Sean Russell to talk about their films, production, veganism, activism, the pandemic, and the current shift in societies perception of animal cruelty. This is the second one in our vegan heroes series. Our guest today is Keegan Kuhn. Well known for his work: COWSPIRACY and WHAT THE HEALTH (with Kip Anderson) Keegan is a dear friend and an inspiration to me, Miguel and so so so many. Keegan is without a doubt our ultimate vegan hero, who busts his ass off for the good, for justice, fighting for what his right with his camera. In this episode we speak about his movies, about directing, about learning it all himself through “youtube university” and “Leo” (Leonardo di Caprio) about nearly dying in the desert and the commitment to his work. Do not miss this episode. Keegan doesn’t do much interviews….. so I am forever grateful and super proud of this episode. Thank you Keegan!Besides his movies you can also read the book Keegan wrote with Kip Andersen: The Sustainable Secret. Find Keegan on @firstsparkmedia@cowspiracy

Fighting for justice on our plates goes beyond fighting for the rights of animals. Between the implications of the USDA dietary guidelines for people of color, the disparity in food access and education, and gentrification pushing low-income neighborhoods deeper into food deserts, we have to confront the food injustice faced by our human neighbors too. John Lewis, also known as the Badass Vegan, didn’t see a mango or fresh avocado until he moved from Furguson, Missouri to Miami to pursue his MBA. After his mother was diagnosed with cancer, he threw himself into research that revealed a troubling connection between animal protein and the illness. While he’s joined his love for health and fitness with his business savvy to create VeganSmart, a plant-based protein shake company, he’s also digging into the darker side of food. John has teamed up with Keegan Kuhn of What the Health and Cowspiracy to confront food racism through the lens of hip-hop and urban culture in the upcoming documentary, Hungry for Justice. He joins Dotsie and Alexandra in this episode to explore how communities are being left behind in the fight for health and wellness. You’ll hear how certain populations are being underserved and overlooked when it comes to autonomy over their health -- and what you can do to help. What we discuss in this episode: - Dotsie’s trip to Washington, D.C., where she spoke to encourage the USDA to remove dairy from the food pyramid - Are we confusing what’s normal with what’s right? How John’s perspective of food evolved between his move to Miami and meeting with the doctor who encouraged him to try vegetarianism - The diagnosis that rocked John’s world and challenged him to research lifestyle versus genetic diseases - John’s journey ditching dairy for good and how he’s encouraging others to make the switch - The impetus for creating Hungry for Justice, the documentary exploring food deserts, racism, and injustice through the lens of hip-hop and urban culture - Food racism and dairy: Racial disparities in our ability to digest cows’ milk, and why more people of color are “lactose normal” - Category Killers: How chain store giants are proliferating the effects of food injustice - Understanding the intersection between race and food, and why it’s so important for more privileged voices to speak up against food injustice - Follow John on Instagram at @badassvegan and on his website at BadAssVegan.com, or email him at John@BadAssVegan.com Connect with Switch4Good - YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCQ2toqAmlQpwR1HDF_KKfGg - Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Switch4Good/ - Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/switch4good/ - Twitter: https://twitter.com/SwitchForGood - Website: switch4good.org

Fiona has a very straightforward, old-fashioned, action-orientated approach that we can all learn from.

Vegan Athlete Fiona Oakes Is Running For Good and breaking the stereotype that veganism holds you back from anything. I'm a little star-struck by this interview. Cowspiracy and What the Health put documentarian Keegan Kuhn on the A-list in his genre, and he's back with the heartening story of inspiring ultra-marathoner and U.K. Sanctuary founder Fiona Oakes. Show notes.
“Being vegan doesn't hold you back from anything and in fact, it might make you better at what you want to do.”Keegan KuhnToday's episode features a conversation conducted before a live audience at the Laemmle Royal Theatre in Los Angles with acclaimed British ultra-runner Fiona Oakes and friend, multiple podcast guest and filmmaker Keegan Kuhn — one-half of the team behind both Cowspiracy & What The Health.Vegan since she was 6 years old, Fiona is an extraordinary athlete and exemplary human hailing from the UK who holds four world records for marathon running. Perhaps best known as the world’s fastest woman to run a marathon on all seven continents and the North Pole, in 2013 Fiona won both the Antarctic Ice Marathon and the North Pole Marathon. But what makes her accomplishments all the more amazing is that at age 14 she was told she would never walk properly, let alone run, due to an illness that required more than 17 radical knee surgeries that culminated in the removal of her entire right knee cap. This week marks the release of this dynamic duo's latest creative collaboration, a new documentary entitled Running For Good. Visually arresting, the film follows Fiona as she attempts to set a new world record and complete Marathon des Sables – a 250km race through the Sahara routinely dubbed the toughest footrace on Earth.Fiona runs not for podiums or glory, but instead to promote a compassionate way of living and break the stereotype that veganism holds you back from anything — all while tending to her true passion, operating Tower Hill Stables, where she cares for more than 450 rescued animals everyday.A departure from Keegan’s recent provocative fare, Running For Good is a more contained yet cinematically stunning portrait of an undeniably unique, compelling, funny, self-deprecating, inspiring and essentially anonymous figure deserving of far more notice, attention and acclaim than she has historically received.Executive produced by actor James Cromwell, I had the honor of providing some voice over to the film, as well as co-hosting the recent LA premiere of the film several weeks ago, where we recorded this conversation — which includes clips from the movie itself — post-screening before a live audience.Fiona is someone I respect and admire deeply and have wanted to get on the show for a very long time. My admiration for Keegan and his work is well documented by his many appearances on this show. So I’m delighted to bring them together for you today. In addition, we are setting a new audio production high water mark in this episode. Jason Camiolo (who composed the film's beautiful score) did a masterful job weaving segments of the film into today's exchange to elevate the dynamic quality of your listening experience.Big Announcement: Running For Good premieres globally on Vimeo October 11, 2018. For the first four (4) days of release (October 11-14), Keegan is generously making the film available to stream for FREE to the public. Fiona Oakes is one of the most humble, incredible, inspiring people we’ve ever met. At just 3 years old, she went vegetarian. When she was 6 she opted out of all animal products, at a time when being vegan was considered an eating disorder. Her love for animals motivated her to open up an animal sanctuary. But that wasn’t enough, she wanted to do more. In 2004, tired of vegan bashing, Fiona launched a running club to show you can be strong on a vegan diet, and to bring the word “vegan” to the masses. Since then, she’s broken 3 world records and run countless marathons, including the Marathon des Sables - a 156-mile race through the Sahara Desert. This is all the more extraordinary when you find out that she doesn’t have a trainer, doesn’t really enjoy running, AND has no knee-cap! She’s driven by her love of animals, and her desire to create a more sustainable world. But despite her achievements, mainstream media has kept its distance. In fact, Fiona was even told not to mention her vegan diet on live TV after she broke a world record! Keegan Kuhn, co-creator of Cowspiracy and What the Health, wants to change that. We all need to use our own voice to elevate the vegan message, and elevate others who are promoting a positive agenda for the world, and the animals. Keegan was raised vegetarian with only two rules: don’t hurt anyone, and question authority. He turned vegan at just 12 - you can find out more about his story on Episode 93. Fiona’s achievements and her humbleness are what made Keegan want to create the documentary Running for Good. We’re in a society who praises people who do things for their own ego, and here is this person who does it just for the animals. For over twenty years, she’s run over 20 miles a day while looking after 450 animals. She does this all on a vegan diet, to make the world a better place. We think she’s amazing. Running for Good is available to pre-order now. Check it out! Here at The ChickPeeps we've talked about being vegan for the animals and vegan for our health but we haven't talked about being vegan for the health of humankind and animals together aka. THE ENVIRONMENT! To address this topic, we interview the mastermind filmmakers Kip Andersen and Keegan Kuhn who put the environmental impact of veganism into focus with their groundbreaking documentary, Cowspiracy: The Sustainability Secret. In this interview Kip and Keegan expand on the information shared in Cowspiracy and explain precisely what impact one individual can have on the environment by being vegan. Also on this epsiode… Kip and Keegan explain why they are actually ethical vegans. Robbie gets nerdy with Keegan about the true cost of animal agriculture on the environment. ‘Literally anything you could care about in the environmental world, raising animals for food is the primary driver of its destruction, and yet it's basically overlooked. How organic or grass-fed meat is worse for the environment. Why animal agriculture is also a people problem: ‘If there wasn't such a demand for meat dairy and eggs in the so-called "developed world", we wouldn't see these rates of poverty that we see - and starvation and hunger - in the developing [world].' What difference can one person going vegan actually make? Non-vegan environmentalists: how to talk to hardcore environmentalists who reject veganism. Mangoes from India? Avocados from Mexico? The environmental impact of importing foods from around the world, and do we need to be focusing on local produce? Are almond farms causing drought? ‘This is a movement from the grassroots up, I think it's going to need to be us hitting a critical mass as vegans and vegetarians and environmentalists and compassionate people.' Is veganism enough? Kip expands on how else we can be mindful of Mother Earth. Kip and Keegan talk about their exciting upcoming projects. Some listener feedback from the companion pets episode and an unusual ensemble for your cat. CORRECTION: In this episode Keegan mentions that cows can drink 150 gallons of water per day. What the Health is the groundbreaking follow-up film from the creators of the award winning documentary Cowspiracy. The film follows intrepid filmmaker Kip Andersen as he uncovers the secret to preventing and even reversing chronic diseases – and investigates why the nation’s leading health organizations don’t want us to know about it. With heart disease and cancer the leading causes of death in America, and diabetes at an all-time high, the film reveals possibly the largest health cover-up of our time. With the help of medical doctors, researchers, and consumer advocates, What the Health exposes the collusion and corruption in government and big business that is costing us trillions of healthcare dollars, and keeping us sick. Join Kip as he tracks down the leading and most trusted American health nonprofits to find out why these groups are staying silent, despite a growing body of evidence. Audiences will be shocked to learn the insidious roles played by pharmaceutical companies, agribusiness, and processed animal food companies in the nation’s health, especially in the most vulnerable communities, and will cheer at the transformation and recovery of those who took their lives into their own hands. What The Health is a surprising, and at times hilarious, investigative documentary that will be an eye-opener for everyone concerned about our nation’s health and how big business influences it.

In this week's episode we play you audio of the healthcare professional panel discussion including audience questions which was held after a screening of the documentary movie What The Health in Perth, Australia, at the Perth Town Hall on June 16th 2017. Whilst co-hosts Andrew & Claire Davies did not participate in the movie screening, the feedback from the 2 panel discussions previously aired in episode 4 (Melbourne screening) and episode 15 (Canberra screening) of the New Normal Project podcast suggested this would be another popular, inspiring and valuable episode. The panel members at the Perth screening were Dr Alyce Churchill (a trainee General Practitioner), Dr Vinayak Hutchinson (a Psychiatry registrar), Elizabeth Boucher (a Pre-admission and Day Surgery Unit nurse) and Louise Roberts (a Coronary and Intensive Care nurse). Tony Boucher, a metallurgist and businessman, was the panel moderator. The event was organised and hosted by Lucy Stegley from Raw Events Australia, with co-hosts Animal Justice Party, Animal Liberation WA and Plant Based Easy. Raw Events Australia has been taking this movie, What The Health, to venues in many cities across Australia and New Zealand, thanks to the directors Keegan Kuhn and Kip Anderson. This extremely provacative and groundbreaking documentary movie is the follow-up film from the creators of the award-winning documentary Cowspiracy. The film exposes the collusion and corruption in government and big business that is costing us trillions of healthcare dollars, and keeping us sick. It uncovers the secret to preventing and even reversing chronic diseases, which is essentially a whole foods plant-based diet, and seems to be something the world's leading health organizations don't want people to know about. The topics of discussion included the definition of whole foods plant-based nutrition, the panellists impression of the documentary and which issue stood out the most, what attracted the panellists to eating a plant-based diet, how the panellists incorporate plant-based nutrition into their practice, how nutrition is poorly covered in most medical training institutions, how healthcare professionals can influence their colleagues about nutrition, how a whole foods plant-based diet might help in a person with chronic pain syndrome, how healthcare professionals might be affected if the health of the community becomes significantly improved because of plant-based nutrition and what tips the daughter of a man recently diagnosed with lung cancer might need to help him. During the discussion several inspiring stories of people with dramatic health benefits due to plant-based nutrition were told. Andrew & Claire also discuss on the podcast the successful New Normal Sunday event they held, and which included a variety of activities including a run or walk, a yoga session, a meditation and a green smoothie.
In this week's episode we play you audio of the healthcare professional panel discussion including audience questions which was held after a screening of the documentary movie What The Health in Canberra at the National Film and Sound Archive on June 13th 2017. New Normal Project podcast co-host, Andrew Davies, was a member of the panel which included Robyn Chuter, a naturopath and nutritionist from Sydney, Clare Mann, a psychologist and author from Sydney, and Stephanie Dakin, a General Practitioner trainee doctor from Canberra. Caitriona Reed, a mentor and trainer of conscious entrepreneurs was the panel moderator. The event was organised and hosted by Lucy Stegley from Raw Events Australia, with co-hosts Vegan ACT, Animal Liberation ACT and Vegan Healthy Living Canberra. In great news this week we learned that the What The Health movie is now available on Netflix for all of us to share with our families and friends. Back in episode 4, we broadcast a similar panel from a screening in Melbourne, but as this was also an interesting and informative discussion we thought we’d bring this to you on the podcast. The audience was different and the panel members were different, so as you can expect the questions were quite different too. We covered the topics of whether the movie might be biased, how the economy might cope if a much larger number of people were plant-based eaters, how effective whole-foods plant-based nutrition is for inflammatory bowel disease, what effects sugars have on the microbiome and liver, whether the harmful effects of saturated fat have been exaggerated, whether there are whole-foods plant-based dietitians and nutritionists in Canberra, whether medical practitioner groups are trying to defuse the lobbies of big agriculture and big pharma, whether soy consumption can be a problem in thyroid disease, whether clean meat might be better than dirty plant foods and how someone starts a whole foods plant-based diet when they have just been convinced to do so by watching the movie. We also announce on the podcast an event called the New Normal Sunday which will be held in Melbourne in July 2017. This will include a run or walk, a yoga session, a short meditation and a green smoothie.
"If I could deliver one message to the researchers who are looking for the cause of diabetes and the cause of clogged arteries and the cause of high blood pressure and the cause of diabetes I would tell them the answer is in 3 words - it's the food". These words were said by Dr Michael Klaper, an American physician who uses whole foods plant-based nutrition in his medical practice, and come straight from the movie 'What The Health'. This movie opened internationally this month and we were privileged to attend the Australian premiere screening in Melbourne this week. This extremely provacative and groundbreaking documentary movie made by Kip Andersen and Keegan Kuhn, is the follow-up film from the creators of the award-winning documentary Cowspiracy. In this episode we discuss our impressions of the movie, play the trailer of the movie, and then play the audio from a medical panel discussion which was conducted in the cinema immediately following the movie screening. This panel included general practitioner Dr Malcolm Mackay, medical oncologist Dr Despina Handolias, lifestyle medicine trainee Dr Renae Thomas, neuropsychologist Dr Ash Nayate, and was moderated by intensive care physician Dr Andrew Davies. The panel members gave their impressions of the movie and discussed how they are using plant-based nutrition in their practice before answering questions from the audience. The many questions included how we can get more health care professionals to consider plant-based nutrition in their own lives and practice, what are the best resources for information to back up our dietary choices, what are the effects of pesticides on plant-based wholefoods, whether we should be concerned about significant soy consumption, the risk of iron deficiency for plant-based eaters, recommendations regarding vitamin B12 supplementation on a plant-based diet, whether backyard eggs might be better than commercially produced eggs, the struggles of challenging the status quo in health education, and thoughts on a high carbohydrate, low fat approach to diet. This was a really valuable panel discussion and we are very pleased to bring this to you courtesy of Raw Events Australia and Animal Liberation Victoria who arranged the movie screening and panel discussion. Hope you enjoy it.

“There are two kinds of cardiologists: vegans and those who haven't read the data.”Dr. Kim Williams, MD President, American College of CardiologyImagine four commercial airliners crashing every single hour of every single day of every single year. It's unfathomable. And yet that is how many Americans die from heart disease annually. In fact, an unbelievable 1 out of every 3 people in the U.S. will perish from this one disease.Meanwhile, 70% of Americans are obese or overweight. In the coming decade, 50% of Americans will be diagnosed diabetic or pre-diabetic. An economic disaster, 75% of all health care costs in America are attributable to these and a few other chronic lifestyle illnesses. It's devastating. And yet the most heartbreaking aspect of this crisis is that 80-90% of these illnesses are very easily preventable and often entirely reversible via some rather simple diet and lifestyle alternations. It's the food, stupid. This week I'm joined by Kip Andersen and Keegan Kuhn, the filmmaking dynamic duo behind the groundbreaking documentary Cowspiracy, to talk about their brand new follow up. Equally groundbreaking, What The Health explores the relationship between our food systems and big business, exposing the collusion and corruption that is making us sick, keeping us sick and costing us trillions in healthcare dollars.Whereas Cowspiracy explores the impact of animal agriculture on environmental health, What The Health focuses on human health. Perhaps the most important documentary you will ever see, it's a film about the power of special interest groups to drive unhealthy consumer spending habits. It's about environmental racism and the impact of animal agriculture on community health. And it's about why you need to rethink for yourself everything you've ever been told about the relationship between business and food, the impact of food choice on personal health, and your body's incredible, innate power to prevent, fight and even reverse the chronic lifestyle illnesses that are unnecessarily killing people by the millions.Starting March 16, the film will be available to watch worldwide at whatthehealthfilm.com – where you can also pre-order the DVD and cookbook as well as set up a screening in your town (I'm hosting one on March 29). In addition, for the first four days of the film's release (between March 16 – 20), Keegan and Kip will be donating half of all proceeds to Food Not Bombs – an amazing, for-purpose organization that feeds thousands of people free vegan meals across North America and the world.Kip and Keegan are truly breaking paradigms. Making the world a better place. And changing lives with what I think is the most important film of the year. A film that just might save your life or that of a loved one. I aspire to their level of courage and advocacy. And I sincerely hope you enjoy this exchange. On a final note, I'm hosting a private screening of What The Health on March 29 in Thousand Oaks, CA. Welcome to the 374th episode of Our Hen House! Mariann interviews Kip Anderson and Keegan Kuhn about What the Health, the groundbreaking follow-up film from the creators of the award-winning documentary Cowspiracy. With heart disease and cancer the leading causes of death in America, […]
Keegan Kuhn was raised with two rules: don't hurt anybody, and question authority. Judging by what's he's become and what he's accomplished, I think those two rules may comprise a necessary and sufficient philosophy of child-rearing. Keegan is an accomplished bio-intensive farm and garden developer, a social activist, and a documentary filmmaker whose latest project, What the Health?, promises to rip the cover off the pharmaceutical / medical / agricultural conspiracy to ruin our health.
Cowspiracy: The Sustainability Secret is a groundbreaking feature-length environmental documentary following intrepid filmmaker Kip Andersen as he uncovers the most destructive industry facing the planet today – and investigates why the world’s leading environmental organizations are too afraid to talk about it. Executive produced by Leonardo DiCaprio, Cowspiracy: The Sustainability Secret follows intrepid filmmaker Kip Andersen as he uncovers the most destructive industry facing the planet today – and investigates why the world’s leading environmental organizations are too afraid to talk about it. Animal agriculture is the leading cause of deforestation, water consumption and pollution, is responsible for more greenhouse gases than the transportation industry, and is a primary driver of rainforest destruction, species extinction, habitat loss, topsoil erosion, ocean “dead zones,” and virtually every other environmental ill. Yet it goes on, almost entirely unchallenged. As Andersen approaches leaders in the environmental movement, he increasingly uncovers what appears to be an intentional refusal to discuss the issue of animal agriculture, while industry whistleblowers and watchdogs warn him of the risks to his freedom and even his life if he dares to persist. Kip Andersen’s environmental awakening came as a result of An Inconvenient Truth. After seeing the film, he began to recycle religiously, turn off lights constantly, shower infrequently, and ride a bike instead of driving. Andersen believed he was doing everything he could to help the planet by following the guidelines of national and international environmental organizations, but his life took a different direction when he found out animal agriculture is the leading cause of environmental destruction. He is the founder of AUM Films and Media, a 501c3 non-profit focused on creating films and media that promote thrivability, compassion, and harmony for all life. He is also an entrepreneur, as well as a certified Jivamukti and Kundalini yoga teacher. He is a graduate of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo school of business and has called San Francisco home for more than a decade. Keegan Kuhn is a videographer, award-winning documentary filmmaker, and professional musician living in the east bay of San Francisco. He has worked with nonprofit organizations and been involved in social justice movements for virtually his entire life. As a filmmaker, he helps organizations reach an ever-greater community of supporters with the highest possible quality films and videos. His film career has taken him as far as the remote interior of Alaska to document modern homesteaders, to the high deserts of the American west filming the nation’s remaining wild horses, to rural agricultural communities and dirty urban streets. He is motivated by a deep desire to shed light on untold stories of the most downtrodden in our society, and to raise to awareness through greater visibility of social justice issues. We talk a lot about the health benefits and ethical side of veganism, but rarely touch on arguably one of the most important: The environmental benefits. At least Doug likes to tell me it's one of the most important... In today's episode Doug and I chat with the directors of the hit documentary Cowspiracy, and explore why many environmentalists ignore the negative impact the meat and dairy industries have on our planet.
Kip Andersen and Keegan Kuhn are the producers of the 2014 documentary "Cowspiracy" and are also working on their next project called "What The Health" due to release in 2016. http://www.cowspiracy.com/

What if the conversation around climate change and how to stop it was all wrong? What if carbon emissions, fracking, oil pipelines, and Hummers weren’t...
“[Animal agriculture] is one of the largest industries on the planet, with the biggest environmental impact. And they are trying to keep us in the dark about how they are operating…”Will Potter, independent journalist & TED Senior FellowA little over a year ago, I shared an amazing conversation with Kip Andersen & Keegan Kuhn, the dynamic filmmaking duo behind Cowspiracy: The Sustainability Secret. If you missed that episode, I encourage you to check it out here– it's one of my most popular episodes to date.An Inconvenient Truth meets Blackfish, Cowspiracy is an incredibly sobering and powerful (yet also funny and entertaining) documentary that takes a hard, unflinching look at the incredibly negative impact of animal agriculture on the health, well being and sustainability of our planet and it's precious, dwindling resources.Whether we are talking about carbon emissions, climate change, the blindingly rapid destruction of our rain forests, over consumption of water, species extinction, the depletion and destruction of our soil, the pollution of our rivers, lakes and oceans or the obliteration of natural wildlife habitats, you might be surprised to discover the very inconvenient and uncomfortable truth that animal agriculture is the industry by far most responsible for the global environmental catastrophe we currently face.If this is true, then why aren't we talking about it more?Cowspiracy is the rather shocking tale of what Kip and Keegan discovered trying to answer this very question. The little indie film that could, Cowspiracy is a true grassroots phenomenon. Crowd-source funded, rejected by the film festival circuit and lacking distribution, Kip and Keegan spent the last year traveling the country in a van attending independently organized, homespun screenings. Getting the word out one screen at a time, one audience at a time. Then something truly amazing happened. The film fell into the hands of Leonardo DiCaprio. The biggest movie star in the world didn't just fall in love with the movie, he came on board as Executive Producer with a mission: that Cowspiracy become required viewing for everyone and anyone who gives a slightest damn about the health of our planet. This week that mission moves towards reality. On Tuesday, September 15, Cowspiracy will premiere on Netflix worldwide. For those of you that have already seen the film, this is a new and improved cut — tighter with updated facts, it demands another view. The impact of Leonardo's name and credibility on the film's reach is astronomical and cannot be overstated. I am extremely proud to be an early supporter and associate producer on this project. I'm excited for mainstream audiences to finally discover this important film. I'm over the moon that Kip and Keegan will now be recognized on a mass level for their incredible work. But mostly I am excited for the dynamic environmental conversation that will inevitably ensue. And the positive changes to follow.Picking up where our first conversation left off, today's podcast covers a lot of ground, including:* the broad effects of animal agriculture on society* ethical & environmental concerns* the fallacy of ‘sustainable' livestock* the Alan Savory myth* soil & ecosystem degradation* educating charitable organizations * grass roots vs. mainstream media* how Leonardo DiCaprio got involved* the Netflix effect on enviro advocacyKip and Keegan are truly breaking paradigms. Making the world a better place. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
This week on the show Bill is back from his Alaskan adventure and things get straight to business. For the first time ever in podcast history their is no non-edge guest (lets not count the time Bill was interviewed, that was non canonical). This week Bill talks with documentary film maker Keegan Kuhn. The show kicks off with an interview with Keegan and his partner Kip Andersen being interviewed on Democracy Now about their film Cowspiracy and the affect of animal agriculture on global climate change. Then things really get going when Bill talks with Keegan about Richmond crews, always being pissed off, and why being straight edge is so important. A great episode that will get the straight edge pride flowing.
“The single most important thing you can do as a consumer is change out those 3 or 4 ounces of meat in the center of your plate.”Ethan Brown, CEO of Beyond MeatRight now this spinning land mass we call Earth is host to over 7 billion hungry human mouths to feed. Our current set up for handling this relentless, growing need isn't just problematic, it's broken, outdated technology that is making us sick and decimating the planet at an unfathomable rate.If we want to preserve a vibrant planet for future generations, it is imperative we find better, more innovative, more economic, more compassionate, more sustainable ways to sate the population. This is a long way of saying it's high time for a paradigm shift. If you listened to my podcast with Kip Anderson and Keegan Kuhn – the guys behind the highly compelling documentary Cowspiracy (I implore you to check out both the podcast and the film if you haven't already), then you already know that industrialized animal agriculture is our #1 environmental threat — far more deleterious to planetary health than transportation or fracking and the current leading cause of species extinction, ocean dead zones, water pollution and habitat destruction.Adopting a plant-based diet is the single most powerful thing we can do as consumers to take a stand against this insanity. But to truly solve this problem we need to first acknowledge that we have a serious protein fixation. Facilitating a mass cultural shift away from our strong preference towards an animal-centric diet requires more than a simple plea to go vegan. To truly break the paradigm we need phenomenal food alternatives with mainstream appeal. Products that aren't just more sustainable and consciously harvested, but inventive products that rival, if not altogether outdo our appetite for beef, chicken, fish and eggs in not just nutritional content, but in flavor, taste and texture as well. The good news is that there are super intelligent, highly motivated people hard at work on just this — innovating brand new ways to improve human health, positively impact climate change, address global resource constraints and improve animal welfare with products, which for lack of a better phrase, simply taste good.Ethan Brown is one such innovator.Conceived in 2009 as a potential solution to problems he saw with the meat industry, Ethan founded Beyond Meat with a singular goal — to produce plant-based food products that would essentially replicate meat in an effort to render some of the downsides of the meat industry obsolete. In the same way last week's podcast guest Joshua Katcher implicitly understands that ethically manufactured garments must outmatch their less sustainable comparisons in fashion flair, Ethan understands that to win mainstream hearts and minds, his food products need more than satisfy the palates of enthusiastic carnivores.Backed by heavy hitters like Bill Gates and Twitter co-founder Biz Stone, it's not a stretch to say Ethan is well on his way to achieving this goal. Food impresario Alton Brown called Beyond Meat's Chicken Strips “more like meat than anything I've e... See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Cowspiracy, which was executive produced by Leonardo DiCaprio, is the documentary everyone needs to watch. Filmakers Kip Andersen and Keegan Kuhn will be joining me for an in depth interview on the impact of animal agricultural on our environment and why everyone seems to be ignoring it. As eye-opening as Blackfish and as inspiring as An Inconvenient Truth, this shocking yet humorous documentary reveals the absolutely devastating environmental impact large-scale factory farming has on our planet, and offers a path to global sustainability for a growing population.

You care about the planet, right?Of course you do. We're all concerned about global climate change, melting ice caps, fracking, the pollution of our oceans and all the many more issues we currently face that threaten Earth's long term sustainable health. As such, we do our best to be good planetary citizens. To keep our carbon footprint light, we eat local, recycle and compost. We opt for the bike and leave the hybrid car in the garage to reduce our fossil fuel dependance. We've swapped our lightbulbs for those new expensive ones that for whatever reason are supposed to be so much better. And here in California (and wherever we face drought) we limit our showers and curtail excess water usage. This is a very positive shift in consciousness. These are all great habits. So go ahead. It's OK to feel good about yourself. In fact, give yourself a pat on the back for being awesome. But what if I told you that all of our individual good citizenship efforts are just the tiniest drop in the bucket when compared to the massively deleterious impact of just one particular industry most of us quite simply and unconsciously support on a daily basis every day of our lives?Whether we are talking about global climate change, the blindingly rapid destruction of our rain forests, over consumption of water, species extinction, the depletion and destruction of our soil, the pollution of our rivers, lakes and oceans or the obliteration of natural wildlife habitats, you might be surprised to discover the very inconvenient and uncomfortable truth that there is one industry single-handedly responsible for destroying and undermining the health and sustainability of our planet far more than any other. The elephant in the room – animal agriculture. It is indisputable that our global industrialized system of factory livestock harvesting is unsustainable. It's killing us and it's killing the planet. We must embrace this reality and work collectively to create new sustainable systems to feed the 7 billion people that walk the Earth. Because the point of no return is quickly upon us. We're in the red. If we don't promptly redirect, it truly will be too late. When it comes to conservation and ecological responsibility, the dialog generally focuses on fossil fuels. A big issue, of course; and worthy of our attention. But here's a truth that all too often gets quietly swept under the rug: the deleterious environmental impacts of animal agriculture dwarf the impacts of fossil fuel demand in every single category across the board. So why aren't we talking about it?This is the question explored by Cowspiracy: The Sustainability Secret — an incredibly sobering and powerful upcoming documentary that takes a hard, unflinching look at just why the issue of animal agriculture and its incomprehensibly negative impact fails to get the airtime it deserves in the global environmentalism conversation. Imagine An Inconvenient Truth meets Blackfish and you get the picture.Today on the podcast I am so excited to have the filmmakers here to tell us all about what is really going on — Keegan Kuhn and Kip Andersen. We truly are all connected on this small blue planet. And as such, no discussion about individual health in the micro is complete without conversation about global health in the macro. We have a collective responsibility to remove the blinders of denial, take the red pill from the Matrix, understand what is truly at play and marshall our planetary citizenship to catalyze the change this planet, our children and all its inhabitants deserve — before it's too late.I sincerely hope this conversation challenges you and gives you something to really ponder. And I encourage all of you to go out and see this film when i... See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
