After the success of "MONTH OF ACTION" Charlie and Pete need a little break from all the action movies and decide to level set with a couple of horror movies that epitomize the Give Me Back narrative. Memories of the VHS covers for Slaughterhouse and Popcorn live rent free in the minds of your GMB hosts invoking both intense fear and morbid curiosity in their young minds. To our delight, both films paired surprisingly well and their late 80s/early 90s charm just made watching these films a real treat.

Hosted on Acast. Ep 120: Mike CallicrateMike Callicrate runs Ranch Foods Direct and Callicrate Beef out of Colorado Springs and St. Francis, Kansas. He built a fully vertically integrated operation involving raising cattle, slaughtering on-site, cutting, and selling direct to consumers. Our conversation follows his life story from his childhood on a small Colorado farm, a rodeo scholarship that led him into an animal science degree, and years running large-scale feedlots before he became one of ten ranchers who sued major meatpacker IBP in 1996 over market manipulation, a case that ended in a $1.28 billion jury verdict the judge later overturned. We get into why that loss pushed him to stop selling livestock and start selling meat instead, how Ranch Foods Direct's on-site slaughter facility, composting system, and bone char/biochar production work together, and the economics that separate a small direct-to-consumer operation from an industrial one. Key topics- From rodeo and animal science to building and later rejecting industrial feedlots- The 1996 lawsuit against IBP, the overturned $1.28 billion verdict, and the Packers and Stockyards Act- How producers' share of the consumer dollar collapsed since 1970- Fraud, political influence, and market consolidationWhat "pink slime" and lean finely textured beef actually are- The grass-fed/grass-finished labelling problem - Declining Ogallala Aquifer levels and what it means for ranching's future- Building local maker-owned marketplaces as an alternative to scaling upTimestamps:0:00 – Intro + backstory: rodeo, animal science degree, early feedlots6:00 – Building industrial feedlots, growing concerned with market concentration12:00 – Decision to sue IBP, being blackballed by buyers18:00 – The lawsuit's path to trial and the $1.28B verdict30:00 – The judge's reversal + Packers and Stockyards Act explained36:00 – Shifting from selling livestock to selling meat direct44:00 – Building the on-site slaughter facility and circular waste model52:00 – The "story of the steer" and producers' lost share of the consumer dollar1:02:00 – Scaling down vs. scaling up: why direct/local beats commodity1:10:00 – COVID, empty shelves, and the case for local food resilience1:18:00 – Batista brothers, JBS, and meatpacking consolidation1:28:00 – What pink slime is and how it's made1:38:00 – Grass-fed/grass-finished labeling and imported beef1:46:00 – Ogallala Aquifer decline and water scarcity1:52:00 – Vision for maker-owned marketplaces and local food hubsFind out more: https://www.mikecallicrate.com/The Regenaissance Podcast explores the people, farms, and ideas rebuilding our food system from the ground up.
When I watched The Dying Trade the day it premiered on YouTube, I emailed its creator, vegan activist and filmmaker Jack Hancock-Fairs, within 24 hours. It hit me that hard. I've interviewed undercover investigators, former slaughterhouse workers, psychologists and animal advocates over the years… however this felt different. Because at its heart, this isn't a documentary about slaughterhouses. It's about ... The series completes itself with a look at the grandaddy of them all, Shaun Monson's 'Earthlings'. Although food has been the main focus of the series, this documentary also looks at the use of animals as pets (even that isn't always pretty), for clothes, for entertainment and finally for scientific experiments. Shaun's 2015 sequel 'Unity' is in the show notes below. Antony also mentions a couple of Australian documentaries that are even harder to watch than 'Earthlings' (if that's even possible), and offers some final statements and some attempt at a conclusion. General series notes We all know it's happening. We all know it's horrific but try to tell ourselves it's not that bad and if we just buy free-range eggs we can square it with our conscience and sleep peacefully. However, research and just a small sample of the copious amounts of truly heartbreaking video footage available makes it clear that it is far, far worse than we think (note- the information in this podcast series is actually quite sanitised compared to other testimonies and footage out there). Who is to blame? The consumer or the industry? It seems to be a chicken-and-egg situation that could be improved greatly by the average consumer deciding to invest time in discovering what is behind some of the shameful (and shameless) propaganda techniques employed by the food industry. As should be clear in the series, the animals are the biggest victims but not the only ones, which is obvious when you research the state of meat, eggs and dairy that is routinely passed as 'safe to consume'. To gain a better industry of how and why this nasty business is allowed to happen, a recommended companion piece is the excellent documentary 'The Corporation' and indeed the previous LALO episode on it (see show notes for both). We really owe it to ourselves and the animals who largely live miserable, hellish lives before suffering painful and brutal deaths, to make the effort in the ultimate information age to inform ourselves of the real situation. Unfettered capitalism cannot be allowed to run riot without resistance. Do I recommend watching the documentaries and other video footage available? I'm going to say yes but please proceed with caution and I would actively discourage viewing them if you feel in a vulnerable or depressive state because they have the power to make you question whether true humanity exists and how we can possibly behave in this kind of way to innocent, defenceless beings (once again, I would also include some humans in this). As the saying goes, 'once you've seen it, you can't unsee it', and as Ed Winters aka Earthling Ed says at the end of 'Land of Hope And Glory', 'you can never again say you didn't know'. While listening, consider/research the following; normalisation, desensitisation, disassociation, cultural reinforcement, cognitive dissonance, confirmation bias, power(lessness), exploitation, deception, isolation, (relative) value of life, respect, compassion, sympathy, mercy, humanity. When a man is found shot to death on a road in Corsicana, Texas, investigators work back through the history of the victim's long time girlfriend to find out who is responsible for his death. How does a bouncer in Colorado break the case wide open? This podcast is hosted by ZenCast.fm
Continuing with this most upsetting but vitally important topic, Antony completes his look at 'Land of Hope And Glory', discusses the big myth about tradition and change and then switches to a new documentary called 'The Dying Trade'. This film was made by Jack Hancock, who gives the issue a new spin by exploring his relationship with his father, who just happens to be a man-and-boy slaughterhouse worker (Antony avoids euphemistic words like 'abattoir' throughout this series). Along the way, Jack meets a Holocaust survivor and such legends as Temple Grandin and Gail Eisnitz. As Upton Sinclair famously said, 'it's difficult to get a man to understand something when his salary depends on him not understanding it'. This second part ends with testimonies from some rather brave slaughterhouse workers, who are largely victims themselves working in a stressful and terrifying environment which is, as Shaun Monson puts it, 'both a kitchen and a toilet'. General series notes We all know it's happening. We all know it's horrific but try to tell ourselves it's not that bad and if we just buy free-range eggs we can square it with our conscience and sleep peacefully. It's our annual Supreme Court term wrap-up. To break down a term marked by juggernaut victories for the conservative legal movement—as well as a few key losses for Trump—Harry is joined by Amy Howe, Dahlia Lithwick, and Steve Vladeck. They break down the biggest cases and spotlight several overlooked decisions with enormous long-term consequences for executive power, immigration, and the structure of the American government itself. Finally, the trio looks ahead to the next term and posits ways to restrain a runaway court. This is the first part of a series on a topic which could be the most important and urgent ever covered on this podcast. There's no doubt that the research, including lots of video footage, has been the most upsetting and harrowing, but there has been a strangely cathartic quality to it as well. In this part, Antony talks about his relationship with animals, the video that was the final trigger (or final straw) for these episodes, and then begins to go through the content of the film 'Land of Hope and Glory'. This documentary is known as a UK version of the well-known animal rights/use & abuse film 'Earthlings', which will be covered later in the series. General series notes We all know it's happening. We all know it's horrific but try to tell ourselves it's not that bad and if we just buy free-range eggs we can square it with our conscience and sleep peacefully.
Gail Eisnitz has spent decades going where most people would never willingly go. As Chief Investigator for the Humane Farming Association and author of Slaughterhouse, she's built a career on documenting what happens behind the closed doors of the meat industry, and then making sure someone actually does something about it.We talk about all of it. What it's actually like inside a slaughterhouse. How you get into these situations, whether that's strategy or just turning up and hoping for the best. What undercover investigations looked like before smartphones existed and social media could do half the work for you. The personal toll of spending years immersed in something that most people can't even bring themselves to read about. And the thing she mentioned early on about seeing the world differently, made up of dots, which sounds abstract until she explains it and then it makes complete sense. This is one of those conversations that's genuinely hard to walk away from unchanged. I'm an EA who has been trying to find ways to make animal suffering more salient. I've been working on a feature-length documentary called ‘The Dying Trade' for the last 5 years and I've just released it on YouTube. I'm sharing it here for two reasons: firstly, because I hope it can become a useful resource that advocates share with others as an introduction to animal ethics; and secondly, because strong engagement in the early days will help YouTube recommend the film to more people, increasing its impact. Trailer: Full film: About the film Jack is a vegan activist. His father is a slaughterhouse worker. After years of avoiding the subject, Jack sets out to confront the unspoken tension between them. This intimate and contemplative documentary follows a son's attempt to understand his father - and the industry that stands between them. I didn't really want to make a documentary about my relationship with my father. At times, it was quite uncomfortable. For the last 8 years or so, I've been trying to increase the salience of animal suffering, primarily through producing videos on my YouTube channel: Humane Hancock. And one thing has always been [...] --- First published: May 13th, 2026 Source: https://forum.effectivealtruism.org/posts/NkXb6hP38MReioe6Z/my-dad-worked-in-a-slaughterhouse-i-made-a-documentary-about --- Narrated by TYPE III AUDIO.

Isaac Smith joins the show in place of Damo, as the team kick things off with their favourite news headlines of the week, and a discussion around what to do about draws in footy. Isaac comes off the long run with his Slaughterhouse - listing several things that bug him while driving, then Chief has two more monologues from two classic films. A missed call by Chief had him wondering what everyone's voicemail messages sound like, then Browny asks the team when they were last genuinely scared. Isaac asks the team for some advice after a number 2 situation, Chief has a quiz about sporting nicknames, Browny and Howie both received some aggressive online feedback, and Browny's Heath Hotline looks at how to reduce phone screen time for both you and your kids. A quick look at both of tonight's games leads into some funnier moments that happened post-game last night, Rory Lobb joins the show ahead of the Dogs' clash with Freo, Browny's Top 5 heads down Nostalgia Lane, and the team wrap things up with some weekend tips.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Howie, Chief, Browny, and Damo are up and about, kicking things off with their favourite headlines from the week - including a bizarre interview with a Finnish soccer player, and the potential ramifications of BBL Privatisation. Chief's Slaughterhouse makes its grand return in 2026, as he takes down a recent ranking of the World's Best Cities. Then Jackson Warne is in studio to talk about an interview he did with a global music superstar. Howie brings back a long lost TV show to test how much the boys know about supermarket prices, and he has some mail on a recent sportsman's night featuring two Huddle members. Chief puts the boys through a sports quiz, they talk about their worst wardrobe malfunctions, and Browny's Health Hotline has a slogan - Health is Wealth. Jack Gunston's status as one of the great modern forwards leads into a debate about St Kilda's off-season recruiting, then Luke Darcy calls in to the show he once hosted - as we find out what he's been up to, and if misses the boys. Browny puts some iconic commentary on display with his top 5, and there's a been an explosive media war between two footy influencers.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Animal abuse is a predictor child abuse. Slaughterhouse locations correlate with violent crime. Over three-quarters of emerging infectious diseases trace back to how we treat animals and ecosystems. In this episode of the Public Health Insight Podcast, Dr. Hope Ferdowsian connects these patterns to a single root cause: systems built on hierarchies that reduce living beings to their financial worth. She challenges public health to stop treating symptoms, expand its moral circle beyond humans, and finally address the conditions that create disease, violence, and exploitation in the first place.References for Our Discussion◼️Phoenix Zones WebsiteGuest◼️Hope Ferdowsian, Co-Founder and President of Phoenix Zones InitiativeHost◼️ Purva Mehta, BMSc, MScProducer◼️Gordon Thane, BMSc, MPH, PMP®Production Notes◼️ Music from Johnny Harris x Tom Fox: The Music RoomLeave Us Some FeedbackIf you enjoy our podcasts, be sure to subscribe and leave us a rating on Apple Podcast or Spotify, and spread the word to your friends to help us get discovered by more people. Do you hear the siren song of synergy? That means we've got a brand new Star Trek show on the horizon and Miles and Charlie want in. With Star Trek: Starfleet Academy on the horizon, our brave lads are going to squeeze back into their school uniforms and try to remember how school works as they approach three episodes of Star Trek which deal with students at SFA. In ‘The First Duty,' Wesley ‘THE BOY' Crusher gets in with a guy who looks nothing like Tom Paris and is really too invested in being with the cool kids for someone who helped saved the galaxy at least three times.
