Matt DeSantis is a New York native, born & raised in Long Island. He picked up my first camera around age 10 to film skateboarding, snowboarding & cliff jumping videos with friends. After buying his first DSLR I also began my working on my passion, automotive photography. This translated to getting his first internship working for McLaren Philadelphia's Creative Dept, where he planned road rallies & assisted with advertising content creation, not to mention working with some unbelievably rare supercars. He moved to Pittsburgh to attend Point Park University where my short-lived college career would begin. After 2 semesters he decided to drop-out. His McLaren connect offered me a job shooting inventory in studio for Auto Palace Porsche here in Pittsburgh while always keeping side-projects (jumpitapp.com) & freelance (hoping to turn full-time) afloat in the after hours and days off, utilizing public meetups like Unstuck PGH & Startup Weekend as educational substitute. Currently, Matt is the co-founder of Art & Exotics, a traveling art pop-up connecting artists & auto-enthusiasts alike. He is also building a software startup for consumer electronic trade-ins called Loopitall.com , as well as running a digital content marketing agency with friends Daniel Massimino & Solomon Ilochi. Matt’s Challenge; Spot a supercar. Take a picture. Post it to Instagram. http://www.goingdeepwithaaron.com/podcast Connect with Matt Twitter Instagram LinkedIn If you liked this interview, check out episode 124 with Baron Batch where we discuss art, entrepreneurship, and creative work.
Squonk has created and toured our outdoor spectacles around the world, with reviews that include “insane majesty" from The Scotsman, “surreal and poetic” from USA Today and “ingenious, hallucinatory, hypnotic" from The New York Times. Squonkwork is fast, funny, and shameless: our first show was performed in a Pittsburgh junkyard, with choreographed cranes and roaring earthmovers. Squonk creates post-industrial outdoor performances for major civic venues and festivals and have toured to 39 states and 3 continents, and have received 7 N.E.A. grants. Jackie Dempsey (Artistic Director/Composer/Pianist/Accordionist) has created twelve multimedia productions with Squonk Opera and has been touring nationally and internationally for over two decades. Last year, she was awarded an Investing in Professional Artists grant from The Pittsburgh Foundation and Heinz Endowments. She has worked as composer and sound designer for Quantum Theatre through a Heinz Endowments’ Creative Heights grant and has been awarded five Interdisciplinary Arts fellowships from the PA Council on the Arts. She has produced all nine of the group’s recordings, one of which was Squonk’s major label debut for Capitol Records. Steve O’Hearn (Artistic Director/Artist/Wind Player) contributes environmental and product designs, and theater productions to the group. He had a solo show of work at the Andy Warhol Museum, where he was Heinz Artist-in-Residence. He has also received the American Theater Wing’s Hewes Award for his work on Broadway, three International Design Awards and five PA Council on the Arts fellowships. His work has been published and exhibited internationally, and he has been invited three times to exhibit his designs at the Prague Quadrennial. He has designed for a score of theater productions, including the multimedia Macbeth with the Actors Theatre of Louisville’s Marc Masterson, and also for the Hawaii Theater in Honolulu. Radiant Hall founder Ryan Lammie was born in Pittsburgh and educated at the Pratt Institute in New York. In 2011 he was selected for the Yale / Norfolk Summer Residency in Connecticut and graduated in 2012 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts. Lammie’s sculptural work often assembled from found materials (discarded furniture, old radios, and the like), is driven by two tendencies in tension with one another: a skepticism of exchange value and a love of maximalism. As an entrepreneur, Lammie has built Radiant Hall into a nonprofit venture that supports over 50 Pittsburgh artists at four locations city-wide. He is also a creative consultant at the new Energy Innovation Center, overseeing design projects that support the EIC’s social and educational goals. Ryan’s Challenge; Go out of your way to meet a new artist or reconnect with an artist you already know. Unpack their process. These days he’d like to be called The Artist, that’s it, The Artist. A name that totally epitomizes his work, his passion and his purpose. His real name is Baron Batch and you might know him as a former Pittsburgh Steelers running back. Football is days behind him. What fills his hands and heart are paintbrushes, pencil, his unique genre of art, Pop X and his high end dipping salsa, Angry Man. I sat down with him in his creative space, art studio and advertising agency, Studio A.M., which also sometimes serves brunch to hundreds of people. This man really knows how to hustle, we steer clear of football and instead focus on the art of business and the business of art and a whole lot of stuff in between. Talk to Baron Batch for even five minutes and you will know why he's passionate about his work. Visit Studio A.M. in the Pittsburgh neighborhood of Homestead and you can see why. The AP Collection was invited to Studio A.M. to sit down and chat with Baron. He mentioned that there is no way to establish yourself in art but through hard work, and stepping inside the studio is a sterling example of everything that he and the rest of the Studio A.M. crew have built. From drawing in dirt as a kid, to forging his own exploration through different mediums and materials, Baron describes his history with the creative process and how it allows him to place his own thumbprint on the world today. In his chat with Genevieve, Baron stresses the importance of owning your process. Repeating his process over and over again gives Baron control of everything and allows him to bring focus to his work. Making art and living up to the brand he has created with Studio A.M. gives him an accountability that he thrives on.
