She is also an activist and an avid environmentalist. Born and raised in Aliquippa, PA, Karen is a graduate of The American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City. Karen has a long list of credits to her name which include playing Grandma Quill in the Marvel Franchise's, The Guardians of The Galaxy Volume 3, Judge Eleanor Thomas in the Sony Provident TV Series – Eleanor's Bench, Miss Virginia in OWN's TV Series – Delilah, and Miss Clara in the Kendrick Brothers film, War Room. You may have also seen her on Vampire Diaries, Saved by The Bell, Judging Amy, The Inspectors, Ali McBeal, Strong Medicine, etc. As for stage, Karen has appeared in numerous Off-Broadway productions. Some of her favorite stage experiences include portraying Aunt Ester in August Wilson's Gem of The Ocean at The Actors Theatre, Three Views of Mt Fuji at Playwrights Horizon, portraying Peggy in Charles Randoph Wright's Blue at The Actors Theatre, and Tambourines to Glory at The Billie Holiday Theatre.
On this episode of #LatinosOutLoud, Rachel chats virtually with Playwright Kristoffer Diaz, who is the noble pen behind the Grammy and Tony award-winning Broadway show, Hell's Kitchen. Diaz is the book writer for the Broadway hit which tells a story loosely based on Alicia Keys' life and incorporates some of her biggest hits. Rachel got the chance to see the show, and the two speak about key moments in the musical, the unity felt among the theatre audience and how both feel the same sense of fulfillment as college Professors, as Kristoffer teaches play writing at NYU and Rachel teaches podcasting at CUNY Brooklyn College. The playwright, screenwriter, and educator gained national acclaim in 2010, when his play The Elaborate Entrance of Chad Deity was produced in Chicago and New York and then named a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in Drama. His work has been developed and performed at the Goodman Theatre, Dallas Theater Center, Geffen Playhouse, Second Stage, Actors Theatre of Louisville, and New York Shakespeare Festival's Delacorte Theater. He adapted Rent for television and wrote for the Netflix series GLOW. His newest play, Reggie Hoops, is about a female executive in the NBA. Across two decades Idris Goodwin has forged an impactful and diverse career as a multiple award-winning playwright, breakbeat poet, director, educator, and culturist. Idris is a 2021 United States Artist Fellow, recognized as one of the most compelling artists living and working in the country, and The New York Times has hailed his work as “incisive and moving.” Idris is the author of over 50 original plays ranging from his Hip Hop inspired breakbeat series to historical dramas to works for young audiences. Goodwin has appeared on or created content for HBO Def Poetry, Sesame Street, NPR, BBC Radio, Nickelodeon and the Discovery Channel. His plays include And In This Corner Cassius Clay, How We Got On, Hype Man and This is Modern Art. Idris is the co-host The Same Old New School Podcast on Vocalo Radio. Idris is currently the Artist Director for the Seattle Children's Theater. In this episode, Budi sits down with Bob Krakow to talk about his career in teaching acting for screen. A graduate of Tufts University, Bob Krakower started his teaching career at the American Conservatory Theatre in San Francisco. Mentored by Conservatory Director Allen Fletcher, he was teaching first year graduate acting, directing projects, and given the job of Associate Director of Conservatory at the age of twenty-four. He then went on to work in the same capacity with Mr. Fletcher at the National Theatre Conservatory.Soon after that, he took over the acting program at another landmark institution, the Tony Award winning Actors Theatre of Louisville, where he was a resident director for the company as well. He was one of the main creative forces behind ATL's Shorts Festivals, producing and/or directing over 100 projects, including world-premieres by Howard Korder, Lanford Wilson, Jane Anderson, Jane Martin, and many more.He served as Director of the Atlantic Theatre Company Acting School, running both the Professional and NYU Undergraduate Divisions. And along with Earle Gister, Lloyd Richards, J. Michael Miller, and others, is a founding faculty member of The Actor's Center in New York. I had the pleasure of talking with teaching artist Jillian Paige and these are some of my takeaways. First, learn how to pace yourself on this artistic journey. There will be ebbs and flows and being able to handle them with grace will help you because a full artistic life is gonna involve pivots and changes. Next, find comfort in knowing you did the thing you set out to do, celebrate that achievement, and then move onto the next thing without any regrets because you did it. Finally, don't force finding your groove. It's hard not to put pressure on yourself or your new venture to succeed but letting it blossom while you sustain yourself financially in another way may actually help the process. The actor, director, teacher, and author, John Shepard, began his professional career at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival where he was a company member for 4 seasons. Subsequently moving to New York, he worked in regional theatres like The Long Wharf, Yale Rep, Barter Theatre, Actors Theatre of Louisville, and many others. Off Broadway, he performed at The Manhattan Theatre Club, Soho Rep, The Public Theatre, Lamb's Theatre, and others. On Broadway, he worked in American Buffalo with Al Pacino, in which he also toured the U.S. and played on London's West End, and John also appeared in A View from the Bridge. Career highlights include the stage version of George Orwell's 1984, in which John played Winston Smith, at the Wilma Theatre, Kennedy Center and Joyce Theatre, and the world premiere of Eduardo Machado's Fabiola at the Theatre for a New City. John spent time in L.A. pursuing TV and Film work, appearing in many episodic TV series including L.A. Law, Spenser: For Hire, Dallas, Quantum Leap and others. John's feature film credits include Sneakers and Patriot Games. After receiving an MFA in Acting from Cal State University, Long Beach, John became a faculty member at the University of Wisconsin, Stevens Point, the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, and finally at Point Park University, where he taught for over 20 years and was the Theatre Department Chair for 10 years. John's book “Auditioning and Acting for the Camera” is used throughout the country. Backstage Magazine named it one of “11 Amazing Books for the On-Camera Actor.” John remains active in the Pittsburgh theater and film community, appearing in many plays for The REP, City Theatre, Quantum, PICT and the Pittsburgh Public Theatre. Highlights include playing Willy Loman in Death of a Salesman for the REP, (for which the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette named him Performer of the Year), and Ralph in A Christmas Story at the Pittsburgh Public Theatre. I'm at an Improv class doing a scene with a partner when the instructor stops us. He says to me, “When you think about your character you just acted out, what was their point of view? What was their philosophy?” I'm thinking, “Philosophy?! This is Improv! I barely know my character's name, let alone what my character's philosophy is.” I tell him that I have no idea. And then he gives me a piece of advice that has stuck with me: knowing your character's philosophy, point of view, or how they see the world will influence what you say, how you say it, your voice, your body language--everything. Even though in Improv we don't have any time to set up a whole backstory for our character, just having that awareness of their philosophy helps you as a performer. It changed me. Theater director Sean Daniels has outstanding credits to his name. He co-founded the company Dad's Garage, which is now a cornerstone of Atlanta's theatrical scene, and then went on to lead Merrimack Repertory Theatre in Massachusetts. He also spent four years as associate artistic director at Actors Theatre of Louisville where he oversaw the sadly now-defunct Humana Festival of New American Plays and directed many of its world premieres over five years.The credit that brings him the greatest pride, however, is just a tad more recent, however: person in long-term recovery. For almost two decades as he charted his remarkable artistic path, he was also increasingly hobbled by his addiction to alcohol, and as is so common for people with substance-abuse disorders, it took him several tries before he was finally able to manage his disease. Sean detailed his painful, absurd and often surprisingly hilarious journey to sobriety in his play “The White Chip,” which enjoyed a successful Off-Broadway run in 2019.Now, over a decade into his sobriety, he has added a new credit to his resume: advocate. After a widely lauded stint as artistic director of Arizona Theatre Company, Sean recently became the associate director of Florida Studio Theatre. At FST not only will he head the theater's new-play-development program, but he will also work as the inaugural director of his brainchild, The Recovery Project. In this episode, Adam and Budi speak with the Head of the Drama Division at Juilliard, Evan Yionoulis.Evan Yionoulis, an Obie award-winning director and nationally-recognized teacher of acting, is Richard Rodgers dean and director of Juilliard's Drama Division. Before that, she served twenty years on the faculty of Yale School of Drama, where she was a professor in the practice of acting and directing and a resident director at Yale Repertory Theatre, as well as Lloyd Richards chair of the department of acting from 1998 to 2003. She has directed new plays and classics in New York and across the U.S., enjoying collaborations with major American playwrights, including Adrienne Kennedy and Richard Greenberg. She directed the critically acclaimed world premiere of Kennedy's He Brought Her Heart Back in a Box for Theatre for a New Audience, where she previously directed her Ohio State Murders (Lortel Award for Best Revival) and the Off-Broadway premiere of Howard Brenton's Sore Throats. She opened Manhattan Theatre Club's Biltmore Theatre (Broadway) with Greenberg's The Violet Hour, directed his Everett Beekin at Lincoln Center Theater, and received an Obie Award for her direction of his Three Days of Rain at Manhattan Theatre Club, having directed the premieres of all three at South Coast Repertory. At Yale Repertory Theatre, she directed Cymbeline, Richard II, The Master Builder, George F. Walker's Heaven, Brecht's Galileo, Gozzi's The King Stag (which she adapted with her brother, composer Mike Yionoulis and Catherine Sheehy), Caryl Churchill's Owners, the world premiere of Kirsten Greenidge's Bossa Nova, and numerous other productions including Kiss, by Guillermo Calderón. She directed Seven, a documentary theatre piece about extraordinary women from across the globe who work for human rights, in New York, Boston, Washington, Aspen, London, Deauville, and New Delhi. Her short film, Lost and Found, made with Mike Yionoulis, premiered at Cleveland International Film Festival. Their most recent collaborations are the multi-platform project Redhand Guitar, about five generations of musicians across an American century, and The Dread Pirate Project, about the malleability of identity between the digital and natural worlds.She has received a Princess Grace Foundation Fellowship, Works-in-Progress Grant, and the foundation's prestigious Statuette. His plays, site-specific projects, and sound-art collaborations have been presented in performance spaces, found spaces, and through the airwaves of the United States as well as Switzerland, Canada, The United Kingdom, and Jamaica. Romero was selected as the first-ever ArtsEdge Resident, was one of three playwrights to inaugurate the Philadelphia Dramatists Center/Plays & Players Playwriting Residency, and was a pilot member of Hyde Park Theatre's Playwright's Group. He may be the only playwright to have presented a play in the bathrooms of Actors Theatre of Louisville during the Humana Festival of New Plays. He is an alum of the WordBRIDGE Playwrights Laboratory, The Last Frontier/Valdez Theater Conference, The William Inge Theater Festival, The Midwest Dramatists Conference, and his works are published by Heinemann Press, Next Stage Press, YouthPLAYS, and Playscripts. Beth Hyland (she/her) is a playwright and screenwriter splitting her time between Chicago and the West Coast. Her plays include Fires, Ohio, Seagulls, Killed a Man (Joking), All-One! The Dr. Bronner's Play, Clearing, Red Bowl at the Jeffs, and For Annie. She is the co-founder and playwright-in-residence of The Sound. Her work has been developed regionally in the US and the UK at Goodman Theatre's New Stages Festival, Steppenwolf LookOut, Octagon Theatre Bolton, Stephen Joseph Theatre, and Actors Theatre of Louisville; in New York at The Hearth and Dixon Place; and around Chicago with The Sound, Jackalope Theatre, First Floor Theater, The Story Theatre, Broken Nose Theatre, The Passage Theatre, and others. Beth is currently a first year MFA candidate in playwrighting at UC San Diego.
As the Producing Director at Actors Theatre of Louisville, Jon Jory directed over 125 plays and produced over 1,000 during his 32-year tenure. He conceived the internationally lauded Humana Festival of New American Plays, the SHORTS Festival, and the Brown-Forman Classics-in-Context Festival. He was also the Artistic Founding Director of Long Wharf Theatre in New Haven, Connecticut, and he has been inducted in New York's Theatre Hall of Fame. Mr. Jory has directed professionally in nine nations, and in the United States has directed productions at many regional theatres including Washington's Arena Stage, San Francisco's American Conservatory Theatre, Hartford Stage, the McCarter in Princeton, Guthrie Theatre, and the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. He has received the National Theatre Conference Award and ATA Distinguished Career Award. For his commitment to new plays, he has received the Margo Jones Award twice, the Shubert Foundation's James N. Vaughan Memorial Award for Exceptional Achievement and Contribution to the Development of Professional Theatre, Carnegie Mellon's Commitment to Playwriting Award, and the Special Tony Award for Achievement in Regional Theatre. He currently teaches acting and directing at the Santa Fe University of Art and Design.

Designer, developer, and educator, Alex Coulombe is the CEO of Heavenue, a new high-fidelity cloud platform to connect performers with audiences across the metaverse. He also runs Agile Lens: Immersive Design, the award winning XR creative studio. Alex has always had a passion for purposing emerging technology for creative visions. In 2010 he graduated from Syracuse University with a B. Arch (and Drama minor!) and after working for several architecture firms, when the Oculus DK1 hit the market, immersive tech became his focus. In 2013 while at the theatre planning consultancy Fisher Dachs Associates, he pioneered the world's first use of VR for accurately testing sightlines and adjusting room design based on the results. Other early immersive creations include an equipment clearance checker for Hudson Yards' The Shed, a projection mapping tool for Bravo Media and The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, and design mockups for the Park Avenue Armory's production of Kenneth Branagh's Macbeth. His work in highly-custom solutions grew and culminated in the formation of Agile Lens. Recent architecture projects include David Geffen Hall, Brockman Hall for Opera, the Statue of Liberty Museum, and the Yale Schwarzman Center. Recent theatre collaborations include the award-winning ghost speed-dating experience Ghosted AR, the Venice Film Festival live VR performance, Loveseat, and the ongoing OnBoard XR One Act Festival. By early 2021, Alex began to focus in earnest building a platform to serve the needs of performing artists in virtual space, and Heavenue was born. The first use of Heavenue was a collaboration with Actors Theatre of Louisville on Scrooge's Ghost Encounter. The show included actor Ari Tarr performing live in performance capture equipment for audiences around the world engaged in a shared Unreal Engine scene through Meta Quest VR headsets in December 2021. The latest show is a reinterpretation of Chekhov's The Cherry Orchard, The Orchard, which opened June 7. With two of his plays, Tambo & Bones and Exception to the Rule, being produced simultaneously, Dave Harris shares his chaotic but exciting schedule as he goes back and forth to LA and New York to help and make sure everything is in order on their openings. He talks about his relationship with writing and how switching from a public school to a private one influenced his writing as well as his love for theatre. He reflects on what makes theatre frustrating at times, why he chooses to write from an individual perspective, and how he uses playwriting to address his personal fears. Dave also shares why he's happiest when he's doing multiple projects, and why his friends' imaginations motivate him the most. Dave Harris is a poet, performer, and playwright whose recent works include Tambo & Bones produced at Playwrights Horizons and Center Theatre Group, and Exception to the Rule which will premiere this year at Roundabout Underground. Mona Monsour ( Playwright) THE VAGRANT TRILOGY will make its New York City debut in April 2022 at the Public Theater, directed by Mark Wing-Davey; the production was in technical rehearsals in March 2020 and was postponed due to Covid-19. UNSEEN will have its West Coast debut at Oregon Shakespeare Festival in spring 2022, directed by Evren Odcikin. WE SWIM, WE TALK, WE GO TO WAR premiered at SF's Golden Thread in 2018 (dir. Odcikin). THE VAGRANT TRILOGY was presented at Mosaic Theater in June 2018, (dir. Wing-Davey.) Of the trilogy: THE HOUR OF FEELING (dir. Wing-Davey) premiered at the Humana Festival at Actors Theatre of Louisville, and an Arabic translation was presented at NYU Abu Dhabi, as part of its Arab Voices Festival in 2016. URGE FOR GOING: productions at the Public Theater (dir. Hal Brooks) and Golden Thread (dir. Odcikin). THE VAGRANT was commissioned by the Public and workshopped at the 2013 Sundance Theater Institute. THE WAY WEST: Labyrinth (dir. Mimi O'Donnell); Village Theater (dir. Karen grew up beside the Pacific Ocean in Ventura, California, where she lived until graduating from high school. While studying at the University of California at Berkeley, she discovered her calling and began to pursue training in acting. She joined the esteemed Actor's Workshop in San Francisco, studied at the Pasadena Playhouse, graduated from UC Berkeley, and received a Fulbright to study in London at the famed London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art.While living in New York City, Karen worked at resident theatres all over the country and trained as a Linklater Voice teacher to keep the “wolf from the door.” Within a couple of years of arriving in New York, she made her Broadway debut, later appearing in the NY Shakespeare Festival in Central Park with such luminaries as Sam Waterston and Christopher Walken.A role in an independent movie drew her back to California where the film promptly fell through and left her stranded. This was the situation when she received a fateful phone call and was asked to meet about a new TV show called Little House on the Prairie. Steeped in Shakespeare and the theatre, Karen asked “Michael Landon? Which one of the brothers from Bonanza is he?”During her years on television, Karen co-created the TV movie Battered and advocated for women's issues. After 8 seasons on Little House, Karen married and she and her husband adopted a baby, fulfilling Karen's dream to be a mom. Although the marriage did not succeed, she was grateful to have the opportunity to be a mother. She continued to appear on television and also stood by on Broadway for Mary Tyler Moore and Lynn Redgrave. She has continued to work in major roles, spending six years at Actors Theatre of Louisville, and later, at theatres near her home in the San Francisco Bay Area, as well as around the U.S. and Canada. Her most recent film, Not to Forget, was released in 2021. The 2021-22 series also includes the comedy Hollywood, Nebraska by Kenneth Jones, Oregon by Laura Darrell, Dirty Book by Joe Landry and Kevin Renn's Mulatto Boy.Elissa DeMaria and Jeff Gurner, in tandem with managing director and co-founder Jim Schilling, curated the program. MTC's executive artistic director and co-founder is Kevin Connors. Using a reading agreement with Actors' Equity Association, the series in Norwalk, CT, explores plays that have been previously produced, read or developed elsewhere, allowing actors and directors associated with MTC to use their creative muscles; to give MTC audiences added variety of programming choices; and for playwrights to look at material with fresh eyes and ears.
