Last year (2023) a conversation about creativity and innovation around art started about a great artist. The Picasso Celebration 1973-2023: 50th anniversary of the death of Pablo Picasso. This celebration triggered the desire to bring the amazing art of Picasso over to the United States to stimulate interaction with businesses and education and encourage creativity.Karl talks to Andy Martinez, the President of the TECC (Texas European Chamber of Commerce) and their plans to bring over to Texas some wonderful pieces of art by Picasso.LEARN MORE: The Business of the Art - Creativity and Innovation Inspiration - BCN News Pablo Picasso from Malaga (10/25/1881 - 04/08/1973), as loved in Spain as in France, and internationally.Pablo Picasso was a multiple creator, he equally dominated the classical painting of his early years, as well as engraving, lithographic printing and other pictorial techniques. He painted from ceramics to an allegorical mural to peace, such as his 'Guernica'. And he was not alien to sculptural creation. His work is that of a complete creator. His inspiration always found him working on a new work. He placed the cubist avant-garde ahead of his contemporary fellow artists. He was a tireless worker. He played all the styles and had time to dance, go to the bullfights and surround himself in very Spanish parties with his best friends. He was also a skillful negotiator of his art.

Eric Armusik breaks the stereotype often found among artists in his entrepreneurial ability to make a living doing what he loves: making art. Chatting with him briefly before inviting him to record a "B Inspired" episode, I was inspired by the many revenue streams he's created for himself and other emerging artists and by his savvy promotional efforts using social media today that he claims are 50% of the business of art. He teaches painting techniques. He paints on commissioned pieces. He runs an academy with painting apprentices--just like the Old Masters did. And his own current project, creating large-scale paintings illustrating Danté's Inferno, he plans as a legacy endeavor. In asking him to share what he does, what he's learned, and how he has managed to achieve success, I hoped other artists would benefit.

If you've ever felt insecure or angry about the fact that putting your creative work out into the world often means commercializing it, and thus changing or diluting it, this episode is for you. I discuss that tension many artists feel between art as a joyful, and private, creative process and the cruel dictates of market constraints, but I take a different perspective: that those constraints can actually be used constructively, and lead to more joyful creative experiences. Making our art into a commercial product may not be the capitulation it can so often seem to be.TranscriptWould You Like to Support My Work?Sign up for my newsletter!Buy me a coffee! Ignacio sits down with Artist and Philanthropist, Raheem Saladeen Johnson, otherwise known as King Saladeen, and his manager, Oren Schneider to discuss how King Saladeen grew up from the West Side of Philadelphia to become a famous artist who has created artwork for celebrities like Michael Jordan, and even started his own NFT collection. In addition to his creative mind, King Saladeen has a giving heart. His foundation "Create Motivate Inspire," gives back to the community through book drives, Turkey donation, basketball program events and more. In this episode Ann shares: That she got in to radio news because of the numerous injuries that she had suffered as a modern dancer. How she had to have a very regimented morning routine due to how early she got up in the morning to go to work. She left working in the radio industry to become a PR consultant. She started her own theatre company in Sacramento that focused on either world or Sacramento premieres. That she had to augment her ticket sales with additional funding such as donations and foundation grants. That working as a radio announcer helped her to be able to write good press releases and make editorial decisions in her business. Theatre also taught her how to plan for future events by working backwards from the events deadline and setting up interim goals. She is donating the proceeds from the sale of prints from "Flowers of Ukraine" to United Help Ukraine. She advises not to quit your day job when pursuing your artistic endeavors as there is a very small percentage of artists that are financially successful from sales of their art alone. Ann recommends reading Business and Marketing books with regards to being able to make sales in your craft. That the Imposter syndrome seems to occur more in artists than in other professions. That Bob the Cat is 21 years old!

Power within the art trade is held by a few key players and yet, the art market shapes the lives and livelihoods of almost everyone working in art. In an art world that likes to season the cold logic of commodities trading with the language of inclusion, passion and creation, we speak to dealers, artists and futurologists to discover how — from the local to the global, from private passions to international politics and economics—everything is touched by the market. Tune in to find out. Guests: Tim Blum, Roxane Gay, Melanie Gerlis, Kathy Halbreich, Pam Kramlich, Larry Marx and Issy Wood

Back of the Napkin Explores the Big Journeys of Small Business Owners
In this season 3 episode of Back of the Napkin, Kelly O'Neill, owner of Fusion of Iron and Earth, shares the inspiring story of her transition from the corporate world to starting a small business from little more than clay, scrap metal, sheer determination, and the passion to honor her father's legacy. Plus she talks about small business branding, Art on the Grand, Funky Ferndale Art Fair, ArtPrize and Mint Artist Guild. Read more on the podcast blog. She was raised in the 1970s, when a generation of women demanded change, and fulfilled an emerging set of expectations. Kelly O'Neill spent her formative years in Farmington Hills, Michigan, a suburban enclave outside Detroit, where her mom and Dad formulated a plan for her future: graduate college, land a corporate job, achieve success, enjoy life. And so she did. O'Neill graduated from Michigan State University – the first college graduate in her family – and rose through the ranks at General Motors. As she did, O'Neill's father, Dennis, grew his home improvement business and tinkered in his shed with a variety of artistic endeavors. His unique take on thrown pottery moved from passion to profit, with Dennis eventually showing and selling his work at local art shows. Kelly marveled at her dad's work, yet she found something missing. “I always looked up to him for his ability to master anything and everything,” said O'Neill. “He would display his pots beautifully. But from a competitive point of view, his pots looked like everyone else's.” O'Neill took a welding course at Oakland Community College so she could create holders or stands to differentiate his work. Sadly, their plans to do a show together derailed after her father's cancer diagnosis and subsequent death. “So, when he passed, he was very much a prolific potter… he had pottery in every stage, and I told my Mom that I would finish his work,” said O'Neill. With encouragement from her mom and support from the local arts community, O'Neill continued her father's work while coming of age as an artist herself. Her joy for her own work grew and O'Neill took the leap from the corporate world to the art world. Her first show, Art on the Grand, was her dad's favorite. Read More ...
