Don't forget to share this with friends and family and now to our episode today with the awesome artist, photographer, musician, content creator, and cute Asian, Ben Aqua (they/them). We talked previously on Never Jaded Podcast about his creative journey/process. However, after that conversation, Ben brought up the fact that we didn't talk about their Asian identity and asked them about it despite the fact that Never Jaded is all about giving flowers to Asian creators. So that's why in today's episode the conversation is about being Asian, being queer and how all that interconnects which influence their art/content. We also touched on our feelings/thoughts about the Anti-Asian Hate that has been going on and much more that you should be tuning into. Show Notes Episode 284: There's A Light Over At the Rendlesham Place Part 1 of the Rendlesham Forest UFO Sighting (Spooktacular 2020) This week Host Dave Bledsoe opens up his military service record only to savor how many times he was almost booted out of the Air Force. (How did this guy get an Honorable Discharge?) On the show this week we head across to The Pond to examine our Special Relationship with the United Kingdom and how together we hide the evidence of the existence of UFO's. The Spooktacular continues with the Rendlesham Forest Incident! Along the way we learn about the desirability of base assignments during the Cold War. (Nukes: Bad. Beach: Good!) Then we dive right into a Boxing Day mystery just outside a critical Cold War defense installation, the boring job of an Air Force Security Police person and the various ways they kept themselves awake at night. (Warning, masturbation content.) We learn the story of lights in the forest, the investigation of said lights and why the hell a respected officer would lend credit to such unlikely bullshit. (Hint: Someone pissed off his Boss.) After we lay out the facts as established, we then turn to later...embellishments, including truth serum and secret messages from aliens. (Be sure to drink your Ovaltine). Then we wrap up the sightings and set the stage for Part Two. Our Sponsor this week is the Suffolk Lighthouse Keeper Academy, like loneliness why not become a lighthouse keeper! We open the show with a thumbnail of the sighting and close with Ben Aqua and a torch song! Alan Palomo aka Neon Indian joins AbNon host Ben Aqua to discuss the evolution of his unique music and aesthetic — from his humble beginnings singing Frank Sinatra duets with his dad to being transformed by Radiohead as a teenager to covering “Vamos a La Playa” in front of massive festival crowds. We also coin the term “emotional italo disco” and host a sensual, romantic listening party featuring some of our favorite emotional italo tunes just 4 u. It’s soggy with existential music nerd commentary and plenty of dad jokes. What is freewriting and how can you benefit from it? Does it help with grief? In this episode, host Ben Aqua discusses how freewriting influenced his grieving process after experiencing a profound loss and becoming a young widow. Ben also recites a few whimsically intimate, bizarre pieces from his freewriting journal. Let's add some Absolutely Nonsensical sunshine to that gritty brainstorm cloud. House of Kenzo are the underground dance collective revolutionising Texan nightlife. We join Breezy, Roxy, Flo, Gemel and Toni over a weekend, as they perform at the opening of a queer film festival in Austin and in their hometown of San Antonio. Each performance is a conceptual piece of artwork with built in messages of radical self-expression, body positivity, ecology and community. Constructing a DIY stage on the dancefloor, House of Kenzo blend jaw-dropping dance moves - voguing, krumping, break dancing in ten inch heels - with avant garde club music, shouting explicit mantras at the audience, inviting them to join in a communal, often cathartic, dance battle. For local artist Ben Aqua, they represent the future of queer culture. Their volatile energy, flamboyant fashion, and total freedom of expression are inspiring a movement in Texas - a traditionally conservative state. Their events are often a springboard for other LGBT artists of colour in the underground nightlife scene. Local journalist and DJ, Dan Gentile, believes House of Kenzo have a real future not in just music but in performance art, the type of higher end culture that would traditionally be difficult for an underground art collective to break into. To date, they've performed showcases at Austin's SXSW, Day For Night Festival in Houston, and are beginning to tour all over the US, and will be travelling to Europe for the first time this October. For our first-ever episode of the The Petty Pod, we sit down with Ben Aqua, a household name for electronic music, art, video, and so many other mediums. Ben gives us a recap of why music was perfect timing for so many things going on in his life, and expands on how he's able to toggle so many mediums at once, including his t-shirt endeavors that has resulted in some big name retailers attempting to steal his ideas. This is a exactly how we'd love to celebrate our first episode and I'm lucky to have Ben in the house for this one.
