S5:E12 - Making Room for New People with Meredith McMurray

The Growing Small Towns Show

Meredith is easily one of the most interesting and unusual people we've ever had on the podcast, and her story is a testament to just how much small-town living appeals to all kinds of people, even people that you may not expect. This episode is all about how Meredith–a Marin County, California native–found herself in rural South Dakota, and what we can do to make our small towns more welcoming for all different kinds of people who want to make their lives here.  About Meredith: Meredith McMurray was born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, CA. She was home-schooled for all but one of her twelve grade school years. Then, in 2006, she enlisted into the US Marine Corps at age 18 and served four years active duty, deploying twice during that time. After an Honorable Discharge, Meredith began an exploration into the world of health and healing practices such as yoga, neuromuscular therapy, meditation, self-inquiry, and performing arts! She began learning Aerial Acrobatics in 2012, at first as a hobby. By 2016, Meredith began making a living off of teaching and performing Aerial Acrobatics. In May 2019, Meredith was presented with an opportunity to take over ownership of Aerial Arts Fairfax (IG account no longer managed), a local beloved Aerial Academy in Fairfax, CA. The offer was for Meredith to purchase the business and facilitate over 200 actively enrolled students to continue their training—or watch it close and cease to exist due to the original founder opting to retire earlier in 2019. Out of pure love for the art form (and a lack of awareness of what was to come), Meredith took a risk and invested five figures of borrowed money into purchasing the business. Aerial Arts Fairfax had eight great months under Meredith's leadership, and then March 2020 came along... Obliterated by the statewide lockdowns and dysfunctional social practices implemented by the majority in the San Francisco Bay Area, Meredith consciously chose to no longer serve that community with her business nor her physical presence. Meredith had heard former Governor Kristi Noem say, "All South Dakotans are Essential." So, after sixteen total months of fighting to regain any sense of meaning or purpose in California, Meredith packed her Prius and drove to South Dakota with no plan. Once she arrived, Meredith was able to shake hands with Gov. Kristi Noem and thank her for standing up for the people of South Dakota and their occupations. Then, Meredith was able to work a seasonal job in South Dakota and earn enough to pay herself back from the five-figure financial wound created by the State of California. After that, Meredith moved across state lines four times before eventually returning back to South Dakota, where she has been living for the last 2.5 years. By no means is Meredith walking off into the sunset... She continues to wake up every morning wondering how she can best serve the community, make real friends, and express important messages in whatever form. Please enjoy the speech Meredith recently gave at the Black Hills Aerial Cup: https://youtu.be/Y15XccuXMFw?si=IGgYzsz8jtsfQqpA In this episode, we cover: How Meredith went from Marin County, CA to small-town South Dakota What she loves about small towns What she'd love for her own small-town experience Resources Mentioned: Freedom Fest: https://freedomfest.com/ Speech for anyone who's ever felt "non-essential”: https://youtu.be/Y15XccuXMFw?si=IGgYzsz8jtsfQqpA Meredith's website: www.DanglingDance.com Get in touch: DanglingDance@gmail.com Small-Town Shout-Out! After his Honorable Discharge on August 30 and new status as a Retiree with Permanent Disability, JP was given an appointment for his first visit to his local Veterans Affairs Office, which is close to the large military base where he was formerly stationed and out of which he performed most of his covert missions. At Veterans Affairs, JP saw many other retirees and veterans and was given a new ID, etc.  After his processing was completed, he was asked to leave the main lobby area and go down four flights of stairs with a small group for further processing. After going down the stairs, JP was in a different lobby/hallway area with up to 20 individuals of varying ages, the oldest being around 80 years old. An officer in civilian clothes briefed the 20 veterans/retirees that they were all former covert operatives and that now they would not be compelled to be part of covert operations but could volunteer. The officer then asked for volunteers for an upcoming mission, and JP was among those that volunteered. JP added that while these upcoming covert missions through Veterans Affairs would be purely voluntary, he was still in contact with the senior military officer who has greenlighted him in the past to reveal missions. JP was told that he would still be required to perform missions with active covert teams when needed. This would likely be for missions to areas that he has experienced in the past, such as the Atlantic Space Ark and the Underground Ant People colonies. The launch of the third book with JP's experiences, US Army Insider Missions 3, which contains documents and more details of JPs military retirement and the reasons for it has just been released. Covid vaccine mandates have infiltrated every facet of our country and the military is no exception. A “forced” retired military hero, Dr. Pete Chambers is our guest today who became a proclaimed ‘whistleblower' by Senator Ron Johnson. Dr. Chambers was working as a physician and following military orders to provide informed consents for all vaccines administered to his patients, yet was ordered by his superiors to “disobey military orders” and stop giving informed consent to encourage increased vaccine compliance. Meanwhile, after seeing multiple rare medical events in normally healthy young service members he started to research the Defense Medical Epidemiological Database (DMED) and saw frightening changes. The government response to his report was……………. Well you will just have to listen to find out! WE were speechless.  What an honor to interview Dr. Pete Chambers, who took time from his jam packed schedule and current crusade to help resolve issues at the US/Mexico border. Oh ya…. And he made May cry! So now you will FOR SURE want to tune in to this episode! About Dr. Pete Chambers: LTC  (Ret.) Pete Chambers joined the army in 1983 and served for a career  spanning 39 years. After his first Honorable Discharge he had a break in  service to complete college and medical school at the University of New  England. He completed a primary care residency and worked as an  emergency room physician and was commissioned as a peace officer serving  his community as a SWAT team physician and sheriff's deputy. After the  United States was attacked on 9/11, he returned to the US Army Special  Forces.  He is a graduate of the Special Forces Qualification Course, earning the  Green Beret. He has multiple combat tours, deploying in the capacity of  Special Operations Flight Surgeon and Green Beret officer conducting  missions around the globe.  His  last two Stateside deployments in Texas were as a liaison to Governor  Gregg Abbott's TASK FORCE during the Texas COVID response (2020) and  most recently he deployed to the border of South Texas on Operation Lone  Star as a Task Force Surgeon. (2021). He retired from service at the  end of May, 2022 after he was pulled off orders when his command ordered  him to stop informed consents.  He refused an UNLAWFUL ORDER. He was  stripped of benefits and pay and forced into retirement.   He is a combat decorated and disabled veteran and awarded the Purple Heart, for wounds received in combat. Until recently he had remained off the media grid, until he was revealed by Senator Ron Johnson as a “whistleblower” exposing facts related to the Defense Medical Epidemiology Database. He then joined forces with other frontline doctors to provide fidelity on safety issues regarding both civilian and military aviation safety. He has a passion for these Americans and for safety regarding the vaccine, as he himself is currently undergoing medical treatment for a severe adverse reaction to the vaccine.  With regard to the COVID vaccine mandate in the military, he like countless others, trusted the DoD's vaccination policy to be safe and effective until March of 2021 when he noted numerous ominous signs and adverse reactions being reported.  He has testified as a fact witness in Liberty Counsel's SEALs v. DoD case and has served as a liaison to Truth for Health Foundation with Dr Lee Vliet. With his newfound freedom of movement and his already established lines of communications with legislators he has become an outlet for still serving service members, elucidating members of congress and media outlets on vaccine injuries within the military ranks.  Links! Jim received a Bachelor of Science degree from California State College and a Juris Doctor degree from Thomas Jefferson University School of Law. He was selected to attend the first Southern California Key Executive MBA program introduced by Pepperdine University. While attending undergraduate school he was the first and only student to volunteer for service in the USMC during the Vietnam War. As a Marine Infantry Officer he was decorated for Valor in combat and led over 200 patrols and ambushes against the enemy. After Vietnam came a tour at Camp Lejeune where he was in charge of a Rifle Training Company while attending US Naval Justice School. He was then assigned to Camp Pendleton as a Reserve Liaison Officer with the objective of rejuvenating Marine Corps Reserve Units because of a massive reduction in Active Duty personnel that had taken place. Jim was then appointed General's Aide-de-Camp to General Hugh Hardy and General Paul Godfrey. He medically retired as a Captain after serving 12 years on active and reserve duty. While attending Law School Jim helped initiate the Veterans Outreach Program at San Diego State University (the first of its kind) helping downtrodden veterans who were discharged from the military without an Honorable Discharge due to drug/alcohol abuse or psychological reasons. Jim felt strongly about these veterans who came home to a divided country and wanted to help them achieve a General or Honorable Discharge status so they could be eligible for government educational and vocational benefits. Jim earned two American Jurisprudence Awards in Torts and Trial Practice. He was selected as President of Nu Beta Epsilon, the prestigious National Legal Honorary Society. Jim's passion of honoring Military heroes and remembering their sacrifices led to his short story, “In Search of Heroes.” This story has led to two Off Broadway Productions–“In Search of Heroes” and “The Remnant.” He has expanded his passion to include motivational talks to the younger generation of Americans to learn about these TRUE American Heroes. Jim is a member of First Marine Division Association, Third Marine Division Association and Disabled American Veterans. James Kyle has over 40 years of experience in Venture Capital for Commodity Trading, Corporate Finance and Real Estate Development. His ability to disrupt standard industry procedures has been the key to his success in providing capital to many ventures. From his initial interest in the volatile Commodity Futures market; he was instrumental in the formation of the first Managed Commodity Trading Funds of the 70s. By setting aside the standard of management fees and retail commissions he introduced Trading Funds that only charged their clients a percentage of the profits! This disruptive change led to raising capital for some of the most successful Traders in the Managed Commodities market. Pivoting from the commodity market to high-risk business ventures in the 80s was a natural step for him by applying his disruptive standard to raising capital for startup companies. His clients would be introduced to ventures that believed in the stockholder first. Kyle's mandate–No salaries, no perks, no compensation for the principals /owners until the company was profitable. He continues to bring his passionate disruptive change standard to his current Advisory and Director positions. A severe health problem can disrupt all aspects of your life. But you can take steps to better cope with your new situation, and knowing that you are not powerless is vital! Join Carol as she speaks with Jan Gomes about her incredible story of reversing type 2 diabetes. Stay tuned! Here are the things to expect in the episode: How can you make dietary changes to manage diabetes? How do you stay motivated over time when it requires constant effort? Why should you get support from professionals? What is the best way to advocate for your needs in restaurants and with family members? And much more! About Jan: Jan was born and raised in NJ. She graduated from high school at the age of 17, turned 18 in October and joined the Army in December and never really looked back at NJ. Jan spent 3 years in the Army, mostly assigned to the Military Police School as a Company Clerk. In 1976 she got her Honorable Discharge, staying in Anniston AL for a few years. In 1980 she went to Germany with her now ex-husband for a year and then moved to Philadelphia, PA where she worked in the Investment Banking Industry. Jan divorced and met Abe, her current husband, online through a mutual friend. She left her life in Philly after 19 years and moved to Cumming GA to marry Abe. Jan worked briefly for ReMax but got bored and moved on to manage a Self Storage Facility and a Construction Office in Cumming. Cumming was starting to get crowded, so they bought our house in Dayton TN. During this period of time she gained weight and decided to join Weight Watchers. She ended up becoming a leader for 5 years until they shut down her area. Jan describes regaining the weight she had lost over the years in part due to stress eating. She was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes (Diabeasties is what she calls it), high blood pressure and high cholesterol (hereditary). She states that between her higher weight, Degenerative Disk Disease and Arthritis in her lower back, she could barely stand or walk. Jan was going through the pre-surgery motions with the VA to have gastric bypass surgery when things went downhill and she ended up in the hospital. There was one nurse who kept telling her she was going to die if she didn't get the T2D under control. Her final diagnosis was Acute Decompensated Heart Failure, a 'side' effect of T2D. Jan's mother died a week before her 70th birthday; her sister died 2 years before her 70th birthday. Both had T2D and did not adhere to a diabetic diet, eating donuts and candy and other junk all the time. When Jan was in the hospital with heart problems because of T2D and wasn't 65 yet, she realized she had to do something! That convinced her to change things immediately. In addition, the Woolfords were told to abort their pregnancy at seven months because she would be born disfigured and have other problems. As a mother and father, they understood the power of the spoken word of God, and never allowed the last thing to be spoken over their children something contrary to what the word of God says. Miraculously, their daughter Jenna was healed of Lupus, the tumor vanished out of the middle of their son's brain, and their youngest daughter was born healthy having since earned the title United States Marine. Today they are all perfectly fine. This is a family that knows what it is to go through difficult times. These trials did not stop Jason from continuing to train in pastor al studies. He currently holds a master's degree in divinity. In 2010 Reverend Jason M. Woolford was appointed President of Mission Cry / Christian Resources International, founded in 1956. He understands the meaning of the Marine Corps motto Semper Fidelis “always faithful”. He will use this same successful strategy in the state legislature.

In terms of any skills or abilities, he is completely self-taught…though he does NOT recommend that path for most would-be artists. In the early 1970's, when the old 4-color comics process was hours away from techno-extinction, Rice was hired to work as the one-man production staff of a small new company in Chicago called FIRST COMICS. Some months later his studio duties were expanded to include an original comics title, DYNAMO JOE, a giant-robot series which he created and penciled. From there Doug went off in many other directions as a freelancer: STARBLAZERS (for Comico), PLASTIC MAN and MANHUNTER (for DC Comics), TOXIC AVENGER and WHAT THE--?! (for Marvel), ROGER RABBIT (for Disney Comics), TALES OF THE TMNT (for Mirage Comics), and STUPID (for Image Comics), among others. It was in 1993 that Rice changed careers and got into TV animation – again, with no formal training at all.   Startoons Studio in the south suburbs of Chicago was a beehive of activity for Warner Bros. weekday programming, which found Doug storyboarding and doing background layouts for “Steven Spielberg presents The Animaniacs” which, in turn, led to him being handed an Emmy certificate and ‘letter-of-congratulations' from the head of KidsWB animation a little over two years after he started. After the studio folded in the summer of 2001, Rice began work on a two-fisted/pulp-style adventure novel, as a sort of hobby between freelance jobs. The book, SQUADRON, is currently in publication in soft and hard volumes designed by the author. Since 2013, Doug has been teaching animation-related classes as a part-time professor at Columbia College of the Arts in Chicago because, even though he never graduated from the University of Illinois Chicago Circle, his Emmy honor counts for a professorship at Columbia.   Follow our Hosts Rich Davis Former co-host of the clowns of cosplay podcast & Cesar Romero enthusiast https://www.facebook.com/bagelbar https://www.instagram.com/velvetjoker2021/   Leo Pond Owner and Producer of The Dorkening Podcast Network https://www.facebook.com/leopond https://www.instagram.com/leo.pond/   Drew Mollo https://www.facebook.com/drew.mollo/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/drew-mollo https://screenrant.com/author/drew-mollo https://www.instagram.com/ghostbusterman1984 Send us your feedback online: https://pinecast.com/feedback/splash-pages-the-comic-book-cl/75683b71-3ec1-4878-bf7d-b50d1a9ea796 This podcast is powered by Pinecast.

Today, Dom led off the Dom Giordano Program with some commentary on crime in and around Krasnerland, Dom's new term for Philadelphia under Larry Krasner's reckless reign. Dom draws comparisons between Krasner and the District Attorney of New York City, who has now been ‘put on notice' by New York Governor Kathy Hochul, and asks why Governor Tom Wolf continues to offer nothing but silence concerning the skyrocketing crime in Philadelphia. Then, Giordano moves into a discussion about potential replacements for the newly open seat on the Supreme Court left after Justice Stephen Breyer announced his retirement yesterday. In addition, Giordano reveals some information he received from a trusted source, alleging that the Pennsylvania National Guard is preparing to give those who refuse the vaccine a general discharge rather than an honorable discharge, which is the equivalent of an asterisk on somebody's service.
