What does being "CHINESE" mean in the Diaspora?2. Aydin's upbringing as a Chinese Canadian growing up/living in Vancouver, Canada3. Harmonizing Chinese/Asian identity with Queerness4. Asian Joy and our right as immigrants/descendants of immigrants to have that without guilt His BioI was raised in what is now known as Vancouver on the traditional, ancestral, and stolen territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm, səlilwətaɬ, and Skwxwú7mesh First Nations. I am an uninvited settler on their land. I come from a family of immigrants to Canada who themselves were immigrants to Southeast Asia, having lived in Southeast Asia for generations. My mother's family is part of the Stateless Chinese population in Brunei Darussalam and my father is Chinese-Vietnamese from Vietnam. Drawing from my own identity as part of the Sinophone diaspora, I became interested in understanding how those who have complex migration histories understand their own identity. This is how I first got into the discipline of History and considered it as a prism through which I could develop and magnify my research questions. Questions around what is “Chinese” across the Sinophone diaspora are of particular interest to me. This extends of course as well to other intersections of my identity as well such as my position as a Queer Asian individual in academia.Research Areas- Sex, Gender, the Body, and Sexuality - Modern East and Southeast Asian History- Migration Studies -Queer Theory- Sensory Studies- Musicology- Music History- Cultural StudiesMy research primarily pertains to the research of culture, sex, gender, and sexuality both in a historical lens as well as a contemporary sense. I am interested in how culture develops and how culture shapes our perceptions of self. I bounce back and forth in my research between the historical past and the present as part of an ongoing effort to research how identity and culture are intertwined. Below you will find a briefing about my current projects.CURRENT PROJECTSHardening Men: Masculinity, Nationalism, and Leadership in Post Colonial Southeast Asia (Singapore, Malaysia)I am interested in how manhood and masculinity are constructed through military service. Today's episode features Tiffany Ran, Taiwanese American chef of Ba Ba Lio (886), BB6 Taiwanese Pop Up out in Seattle. We talked all about Tiffany's journey in the culinary world, being a chef, her Taiwanese-American upbringing, and of course, food specifically Taiwanese food and why you need to check out more than just Boba (Bubble Tea) and soup dumplings because Taiwanese food is soo good! Plus, we talked about her pop-up, Ba Ba Lio!Find Tiffany!Websitehttps://www.babaliotaiwan.com/Instagramhttps://www.instagram.com/bb6twpopup/?hl=enWhat is Ba Ba Lio (According to Tiffany):During my first few years of cooking in Seattle restaurants, I'd wrap up my shifts late at night just as the sun was rising in Taiwan. I would call home after finishing my shifts, dialling 011+886...waiting for the connection...closing my eyes as the phone rings. I'd picture that the King County bus I'm riding on would magically complete its route in front of Taipei's Nanmen Market."What are you making today?""What does the market have?"After asking these questions, my mother on the other line would fill me in on the produce at the morning wet markets and on dishes bound for the dinner table."Ba ba lio," or 8-8-6 in Chinese, is the international calling code to Taiwan, a string of numbers that tethers me to one home as I struggled to build another in a new city. BB6 Taiwanese Pop Up was born from homesickness and driven by discoveries. While our dishes are born of old Taiwan flavours, they're also peppered with new Pacific Northwest elements. I hope, from our meals, you'll discover new flavours and recall familiar ones. Please follow us and share your feelings, favourite dishes, and cravings with me. Taiwanese cuisine is, in part, about my experiences, but it's also yours. I am fortunate and so is Taiwan, to have your support! Support the showThank you for listening! Help this podcast:1. What is Wuxia?Wuxia is a genre of Chinese fiction that features itinerant warriors of extreme (almost supernatural) martial arts skill in ancient China. These aren't your average heroes. ~ENDING 2022 WITH A BONUS EPISODE FEATURING GABRIEL LEE OF HUGMATCH~This episode features Gabriel Lee (Korean American), head of Public Relations of HugMatch, a company that focuses on developing interactive toys for the visually impaired. Gabriel was recommended by a past guest of the show, XinYi as she had Gabriel on her podcast recently and thought that Gabriel would be a perfect fit for the show. After our recording, we couldn't agree more! In our conversation, we explored Gabriel's family journey to the west, how the family didn't intend to actually move to the West permanently at first, to him taking a journey through different occupations and studies (working at the UN, being in the military, studying his master, teaching English in Korea) that led him to where he is now, a man with a strong distant voice, mission and purpose that he commit to in the company that he is a part of with HugMatch. We definitely talked about HugMatch, the inspiration behind it, what it is, the mission and the uniqueness of it right now as it is a company that is AAPI driven. It is a great and thoughtful conversation that you do not want to miss out on at all! Today's episodes with the super creative and interesting XinYi Tan from the "Don't Be Strangers" Podcast. Kyle, our host was on an episode of "Don't Be Strangers" check that out as well! EpisodeWe talked about finding your passions, creativity, being creative and loving art but not making it a career intentionally and the journey she took to become a creative chimera nomad. More about XinYi Tan:I was born in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and moved with my family to Dallas, Texas at age 7. My first couple of years in school were a huge struggle. English was not my first language and entering 2nd grade after skipping almost a year of school due to the move made making friends quite difficult. But even after learning English,I never felt quite at home... anywhere.Culturally, I wasn't fully American, but when my family and I visited Malaysia, I was painfully aware that I didn't quite belong there either. When it came to my passions, I could never make up my mind on a specific creative outlet or medium to hone — not because of indecisiveness (ok, maybe a little bit), but because I find joy in learning, remixing, and over-complicating mixed-media projects. But before I found pride in calling myself a creative chimera, I was hopelessly lost in how to identify my art and therefore myself. Being aromantic meant that I couldn't relate to 99% of the stories represented in pop culture. In short, I thought I was an alien. With every friend that I've found (who listened to me wholeheartedly and confided in me sincerely), I began to feel less and less alien and more and more at home on Earth. I began to feel like I belonged. Don't forget to share this with friends and family and now to our episode today with the awesome artist, photographer, musician, content creator, and cute Asian, Ben Aqua (they/them). We talked previously on Never Jaded Podcast about his creative journey/process. However, after that conversation, Ben brought up the fact that we didn't talk about their Asian identity and asked them about it despite the fact that Never Jaded is all about giving flowers to Asian creators. So that's why in today's episode the conversation is about being Asian, being queer and how all that interconnects which influence their art/content. We also touched on our feelings/thoughts about the Anti-Asian Hate that has been going on and much more that you should be tuning into. Brand new episode featuring Indie Artist from the Bay, wav.We talked about his childhood, his identity as a hapa raised mainly by his Chinese grandparents that made him proudly Asian, conflicts he had with his identity due to his mom and his surroundings, mental health talk, his music and his journey in the music industry being an indie artist looking to represent Asians and normalizing speaking about culturally taboo topics in Asian cultures like mental health, trauma, abuse, and more. Wav an LA-based artist and producer. His sound is raw, haunting and unhinged- yet his instrumentation and “stream of consciousness” recording approach is deliberate and meditative. He has said that his process “attempts to reflect the values and mentality of his Asian roots”. All songs tend to be one or two take freestyles in the spirit of accepting both the self and that which is "imperfect".Wav was born in the Bay Area to a single mother and was raised for a short time in his grandparents' home. The family stayed under the same roof waiting on his father to return from Africa. His grandfather is a Canton-region immigrant and his grandmother is an Oakland Chinatown native. With foundations in Hip-Hop/R&B, and later influenced by a variety of musical styles - Folk, Alternative and Electronic to name a few- making his music refreshingly cathartic. He has released many self-produced singles and worked with a few of the underground scene's rising stars. Most recently, he collaborated with BIGBABYGUCCI on their genre-bending track, “drug + girl” which he also produced. He has also worked with Lil Xelly and pop/alternative rock producer splashgvng.Thank you for all your support!
