What happens when a military base shuts down… but the signals don't? In this episode of The Box of Oddities, Kat and Jethro dig into a strange, documented mystery tied to Camp Hero in Montauk, New York—a Cold War radar installation officially decommissioned in the early 1980s. Years after the gates were locked and the radar went dark, amateur ham radio operators began logging unexplained voice transmissions seemingly originating from the abandoned site. These weren't bursts of static or pirate radio chatter. Operators reported calm, procedural phrases—short, clipped, emotionally neutral language consistent with military communications. Even more unsettling: some transmissions appeared to echo Cold War–era radar terminology that had been out of use for decades. The reports were consistent, carefully logged, and compelling enough that they were forwarded to the FCC, which investigated and acknowledged the anomalies… but never provided a public explanation. Kat and Jethro walk through what we know for certain about Camp Hero, the documented reports from experienced radio operators, and why Montauk's long history of high strangeness makes this case especially unsettling. Welcome to Episode 20 of Class Unity: Transmissions. For this episode, Nick is joined by Class Unity member Dave for a wide-ranging conversation with Philip Cunliffe on the question of the national interest. Cunliffe is Associate Professor of International Relations at University College London, author of The National Interest: Politics After Globalization, and co-founder and contributing editor of Aufhebunga Bunga. The discussion centers on Cunliffe's argument that the “national interest”—long treated with suspicion on both the left and the libertarian right—has returned not as a coherent doctrine, but as a symptom of the collapse of globalization and liberal internationalism. Cunliffe defends a sovereigntist, rather than nationalist, conception of politics, insisting that the national interest should be understood as a democratic process of contestation defined by citizens rather than insulated elites. Nick and Dave press Cunliffe on whether appeals to global problems and global governance have allowed ruling classes to evade democratic accountability, and whether it is possible to retain global awareness while re-anchoring politics at the level of the nation state. The episode also digs into the book's historical and theoretical core. Cunliffe discusses classical realism, liberal internationalism, and the Cold War transformation of the national interest into a technocratic and national security–state project. Nick and Dave challenge Cunliffe on whether realism genuinely reflected mass politics or instead replaced aristocratic judgment with expert management, and whether liberal internationalism restrained power or dissolved political responsibility by moralizing foreign policy. Throughout, the conversation returns to a central tension: how to avoid reifying the national interest while still treating it as a necessary framework for democratic struggle. Recorded on December 15, 2025, the episode also serves as a kind of end-of-year reflection on contemporary politics. From Israel and Gaza to the advent of a second Trump administration, MAGA fragmentation, and competing claims over what counts as “America First,” the discussion explores whether renewed appeals to the national interest can meaningfully hold elites accountable—or whether they risk being captured once again by narrow sectional interests and the national security state. Cunliffe reflects on the limits of optimism, arguing that while democratic contestation offers no guarantees of good outcomes, abandoning the national interest altogether leaves politics empty, moralized, and unaccountable. The infiltration of Outpost Argentum pushes deeper as the team seizes control of a critical security console. With the Doctrine's monitoring network now laid bare before them, Magnum, Spindrift, Rough, Tumble, Carapace, and Gumshoe begin slicing through encrypted feeds, rerouting patrol paths, and gathering intel on the cult's inner workings. But subtlety doesn't last. A wandering squad of Doctrine fanatics blunders into the wrong hallway at the wrong time, forcing the crew into a sudden skirmish amid the flickering lights and blaring alarms of the outpost's interior. As they tighten their grip on the facility's systems, the party realizes they're finally turning the Doctrine's own stronghold against them—one terminal at a time. This week's conversation with Cochemea Gastelum brings our season to a close. The saxophonist and bandleader joins us to discuss his beautiful LP Ancestros Futuros, out now on Daptone Records. Mining his Indigenous roots, soul jazz, and funk, it's a fantastic album, and it completes a trilogy that began with 2019's All My Relations, continued with 2021's Baca Sewa, and now concludes.  Cochemea's resume is lengthy. He worked extensively with the late soul singer Sharon Jones as part of her Dap Kings ensemble and has played with the Budos Band, Antibalas, Robert Walter's 20th Congress, Archie Shepp, Public Enemy, the Roots, David Byrne, and more. The '90s were a strange time. From Gregorian chants to swing bands, you never knew what would make it onto the radio. But some of the strangest groups to improbably infiltrate the mainstream came from the post-Grateful Dead jam band scene. Our guest today is Mike Ayers, author of ⁠Sharing in the Groove: The Untold Story of the '90s Jam Band Explosion and the Scene that Followed. ⁠ The book, an oral history, is really a blast. It covers all the big players of the era: Phish, Blues Traveler, Spin Doctors, Widespread Panic, Dave Matthews Band, but Ayers takes it to the next level by expanding the definition of "jam band" to include Medeski, Martin and Wood, Greyboy and the acid jazz scene, New Orleans funk band Galactic, and John Zorn and the Knitting Factory downtown NYC scene, and much more. For radio astronomers, there’s some good news and some bad news. On the good side, a pilot project with SpaceX has devised a way to reduce the radio interference produced by satellites. On the bad side, the satellites can produce accidental interference. Radio telescopes tell us things about the universe that we can’t get any other way. But the telescopes are extremely sensitive. Transmissions from an orbiting satellite are like bright headlights – they overpower the subtle signals of astronomical objects. There are more than 15,000 satellites in orbit today – a five-fold increase in just six years. And the total could balloon to a hundred thousand by the next decade. Astronomers worked with SpaceX to reduce interference from its Starlink satellites. The groups combined the observing schedule of a telescope with the Starlink control system. Satellites passing over the telescope were instructed to turn away – aiming the headlights in a different direction. And there are plans to extend the scheme to other telescopes. On the other hand, a recent study found that tiny radio signals emitted by a satellite’s electronics can also be a problem. Scientists looked at 76 million radio images made by a telescope in Australia. They found that Starlink satellites interfered with up to 30 percent of the pictures. So future satellites may need extra shielding to keep them from blinding astronomy’s radio eyes. Script by Damond Benningfield

Welcome back to Transmissions with Jason P. Woodbury. This week on the show, a return guest: Steve Wynn of The Dream Syndicate and solo fame. He last joined the show part of a trio: in 2018, we taped with him, Howe Gelb of Giant Sand, and Robyn Hitchcock live at the KXCI studio at Hotel Congress in Tucson Arizona. That talk also made it into the Transmissions feed again in 2020.  This time, Steve is with us to discuss the 40th anniversary reissue of The Dream Syndicate's second album, 1984's Medicine Show, which has been reissued in expanded form by Fire Records. Produced by Blue Öyster Cult and Clash associate Sandy Pearlman, the album found the Syndicate jumping from the smaller Slash indie label to A&M. But it also found Wynn shifting his songwriting approach into darker territory, embracing a kind of pulp fiction, hardboiled crime aesthetic that paired well with the group's rangy, intense sound, which had been amplified and solidified during the tours that followed the band's debut,  1982's The Days of Wine and Roses.  Wynn is a tremendous conversationalist, and this convo opened us up to plenty of fascinating terrain, from record store lore to interactions with bands like R.E.M. and U2, as well as lots of behind the scenes info on Medicine Show.
