Warning. This episode contains reference to sexual violence. It may be upsetting to some listeners.  Once you go noir, you never go far. Ok, that sucked. And you know who also sucks? Roman Polanski, that's who. The guys open the show by ripping on Roman a while before setting aside the artist to try and objectively analyze the art. They talk about “Chinatown” as an ever present force in the film and the events which might mimic that in our own history. They wonder about the climate in which noir thrives, pay homage to the lost art of practical detectivery, and have a long chat about Jack.  Why do they call it Chinatown? They should call it Ovaltine. Kenny Bania, everyone. Let's hear it for him.

So far, I'm about eighty podcasts in.If someone tells me they listen, they usually follow up with ‘that Frank Lowe one's great' (or ‘sick', depending on their age).I always ask why, but never get a clear answer. They just like it.It was enjoyable to record too, but I left wondering whyhe'd barely mentioned Lowe Howard-Spink.As if he'd only ever worked at CDP.Which was a shame, CDP had been amazing, but they weren't my era.Lowe's was.By the time I'd snuck into advertising the cool agencies were the new ones – GGT, BBH, AMV and the agency that carried Frank's name.Year after year, they won big awards for big clients.Stella Artois, Vauxhall, Tesco, Heineken, I could go on.So I will – Lloyds Bank, Reebok, Weetabix, Gordons Gin, Parker Pens, The Mail On Sunday, Condor, Castella, Tizer, Ovaltine, KP, The Hanson Trust, Birds Eye, Smirnoff, Coca-Cola – they were huge. And all of those clients won awards. And, unlike CDP, they started opening or acquiring offices across the globe. But it wasn't always this way.In 1981, only months after opening their doors, they were in turmoil.Totally dysfunctional.Having swiped a big chunk of CDP's senior talent, they didn't have a plan or structure of how to use them.Who over-saw who?Did anybody over-see anybody?Who was Creative Director?Dave Horry? Alan Waldie? John O'Driscoll? John Kelley? Alfredo Marcantonio? Or the recently added former CDP superstar Geoff Seymour? They found that too many creative leaders meant they had no creative leader.Six months in, Horry, O'Driscoll and Kelley walk.On the way out the door, they advise Frank that he needed a Creative Director and it should be the least-known and youngest of the breakaways – Alfredo Marcantonio.Suddenly, things started to work.We talk about why and the rest of Marc's career, hope you enjoy it.

Associated British Foods Earnings Call - ABF

The earnings report recently presented by Associated British Foods (ABF) paints a detailed picture of the company's current financial health and strategic intentions for the future. The company's CEO, George Weston, communicated to investors that "our margins have built back to more normal levels both within Primark and across the food businesses". This claim set the baseline for our understanding of ABF's conducive, albeit still challenging, recovery trajectory.Notably, ABF has indeed experienced an increase in business vitality as validated by their record-adjusted earnings per share in the first half of this fiscal year. According to the insights garnered during their earnings call, this increase has been driven, in part, by key successes at Primark and innovative measures such as the 'Click and Collect' scheme. In addition, ABF's grocery segment has shown expansion, especially those brands with a strong U.S. focus. Other staple international brands within ABF's portfolio, including Twinings and Ovaltine, have experienced positive trends as well. The ingredients segment, marked by AB Mauri's performance within the yeast and bakery industries, has remained steady, while the sugar unit has worked towards enhancing margins through strategic decarbonization projects. All these details were part of ABF's statements during the earnings call.A trend noted from the discussions during the earnings call was a rising preference among consumers for wellness products, providing a lens into the evolving demands of today's consumer market. Weston cited, "We've surprised ourselves with some of the things that we might not have guessed at, like the rate of sale improvement for certain product ranges on Click + Collect". This points to the company's adaptability and potential in the ever-changing retail landscape.ABF's chosen focus on specialty and health-conscious food compounds aligns strategically with this emerging consumer preference for wellness products. Additionally, the ongoing shift to digital shopping options by Primark customers was acknowledged in the earnings call, underlining the growing importance of a digital presence in contemporary retailing.Based on the earnings call, preparations for the future include structured investment strategies aimed at boosting international brand recognition, and eco-conscious initiatives such as decarbonization projects and the establishment of a new sugar factory in Tanzania. Continued expansion efforts are also on the cards, with plans for a new yeast plant in India and focuses on increasing capacity for yeast extracts in the ingredients segment. In conclusion, while ABF has demonstrated a level of fiscal resilience and growth, the accompanying projections and claims should be understood within the context of their recent earnings call. While ABF appears to be leveraging emergent consumer trends, enhancing digital offerings, and strategizing across key segments, the long-term impact and effectiveness of these initiatives will only unfold with time. For now, ABF has denoted themselves as a company responding diligently and thoughtfully to the ongoing economic and sector-specific challenges. This is a public episode. We are kicking off the Christmas season with a 3-week long Holiday Trifecta! This week we'll do a back to back re-air of our 2019 and 2022 reviews of "A Christmas Story (1983)" and "A Christmas Story Christmas (2022)". Corndog Loves the original for the Christmas Americana. Kibbe loved the sequel too and had JUST gone to the A Christmas Story House when this was recorded. Next week would like YOU to choose what we review this year!  A few suggestions are in the show....but come up with some fun ones if you can. Remember, there has to be some automotive thread to it! Send your suggestions to robert@themusclecarplace.com. For our final regular (non-Patreon) show of the year we will finally review the Clark Griswold Classic of Christmas Vacation. We know it's overdue...and we couldn't be more surprised we haven't done it if we work up with our head sewn to the carpet. ======================================== BIG NEWS! Our annual Toys for Tots Drive is under way! Each year we use funds from Patreon to make as big a contribution as possible to Toys for Tots, and this year our goal is a whopping $1,500. We know it's a lot....but you have always come through. We're asking EACH and EVERY ONE OF YOU to join in on Patreon, even if it's only for the month of December. See you soon. Join up via Patreon at patreon.com/KFSHOW ======================================== Presented with Holley!  Phase 3 of Kibbe and Friends is officially here, and Holley is back for more fun, foolishness, and flying orange Chargers! You have just a few shopping days left this season to get what you REALLY want before Santa buys it all for everyone else. Just visit Holley.com to peruse and view for yourself and signup for the mailing notification. Once you go and buy ..... be SURE to tell them that we sent you! Click Sniper 2 here to get going on your order, and tell them that we sent you! ======================================== K&F Show Summary: A Christmas Story Review: If there was one movie to review that best summed up the mind of kid-dom at Christmas it definitely has to be A Christmas Story! The tale of Ralphie Parker and his desire for a Red Ryder BB gun is ingrained in Americana, thanks in part to the 24-hour marathon on the Turner Broadcast networks beginning in the late 1990's. It's set in the late 1930's and is laid over with Jean Shephard's voice telling the tale of his youth. From fighting bullies with green teeth, to being tricked into radio commercials for Ovaltine, to his old man's desire for a MAJOR AWARD, this movie has it all and never gets old. There are even old cars, a tongue stuck to a frozen pole, and a duck that gets his head cut off.  PERFECT 10 LITTLE DEBBIE CHRISTMAS TREE RATING. A Christmas Story Christmas Review: Remember when I told you in the original Christmas Story Review that the whole movie was a love letter to his dad? I was right! Ralphie is an adult now with a wife and kids of his own, and he has to deal with the passing of his Old Man at Christmas while simultaneously dealing with his own career midlife crisis. There are bar flies that will amuse you, a mom that hides from the scourge of the earth (known as carolers). Thanks to his wife and his mom Ralhie gets the win, teaches his kids how to stand up to bullies, and has a few beers with his life long friends. And fixes a Plymouth radiator with a half dozen eggs. This masterpiece is going to rival - for some - the best movie of 2022. Watch out Top Gun Maverick, and screw the crappy review that the New York Times gave. This is a classic for the rest of time! PERFECT 10 LITTLE DEBBIE CHRISTMAS TREE RATING. ======================================== See you soon. Join up via Patreon at patreon.com/KFSHOW Kibbe, Corndog, and the Bern! Shirley Bell stars as Little Orphan Annie... Epi 5: "Light in the Mysterious Deserted House" ... this follows the previous episode when Tony is arrested for robbery....and of course it is all about "Ovaltine"... when I post one of these shows I cannot stop thinking about the 1983 film "Christmas Story" based on Jean Shepherd's story in his 1966 book, "In God We Trust". Remember Ralphie Parker who wanted a Red Ryder Range 200 Shot BB gun for Christmas. Of course every day he got home from school he would tune in "Little Orphan Annie" on the console radio and when he got his decoder ring in the mail he thought he could win a prize that would help him get the toy gun he wanted... but when he decoded his first message... It was about buying Ovaltine! That experience changed Ralphies view toward Little Orphan Annie's Radio Program and commercial advertising! Great film and Little Orphan Annie was a great series, despite the ads of Ovaltine.

Little Orphan Annie, Harold Gray's plucky heroine, made her newspaper debut on 5th August, 1924. The iconic comic strip then ran for an astonishing 86 years. Although now most associated with the saccharine musical it inspired, ‘Annie' was MUCH edgier in comic form - gangsters and Nazis made an appearance, and Daddy Warbucks was so disappointed by the election of FDR that he DIED (briefly. Before being brought back to life).
