The Business Method Podcast: High-Performance & Entrepreneurship
He runs one of the top business podcasts in the world that he has been hosting for about a decade. He has over 2000 interviews and is one of the few that has turned his podcast into a very profitable business. Before his podcasting days he founded Bradford & Reed, a company that ran a collection of startups. He built Bradford & Reed into a $30 Million company in his 20's to the point where they were processing 400k online greeting cards a day and were a top-25 valued website property in the world way back in the year 2000. He got to the point where he was burnt out and sold his company and then he decided to become a podcaster. The name of his podcast is Mixergy and it is close to being one of the biggest business podcasts on the planet. Our guest's name is Andrew Warner. He has interviewed top entrepreneurs from all over the world such as the founders of Wikipedia, Groupon, LivingSocial, LinkedIn, Airbnb, and many, many more. Today his podcast is a household name throughout the entrepreneur scene and he is on our show to tell us how he did it all! Like you, I'm just too busy to listen to cruddy podcasts. So, very few survive on my Podcasts app for more than an episode or two. Mixergy is one of them. I never miss it. Its creator & host Andrew Warner started Mixergy back in 2006, making it one of the top-ranked & longest-running business podcasts. Since then he's interviewed over 2,000 entrepreneurs, business thought leaders, and authors. (…including me in 2012 when my hair was thick & lustrous) Andrew's story is fascinating. In his early 20's, he started an internet company Bradford & Reed with his brother. They hit it big …like crazy big… by creating a website for sharing electronic greeting cards which processed over 400,000 greeting cards per day. With $1M in monthly revenue, the website's traffic was ranked in the top 25 of ALL internet websites during the year 2000. Then, Andrew burnt out. He sold the business, and decided to build a company helping entrepreneurs build their companies. In addition to Mixergy, he's also author of the new book “Stop Asking Questions: How to Lead High-Impact Interviews and Learn Anything from Anyone” If you interview candidates, guests, customers, anyone… you'll get a ton out of it. In this 20-minute conversation, Andrew reveals how he scaled both businesses & what he's learned from the world's best entrepreneurs about the people part of growth-stage companies.

After decades in the art world, Deborah Kass has a hit. A major one. The type of beloved public artwork that you see endlessly on your social feeds, and brings a smile to your face whenever you encounter it. I'm talking about "OY/YO" (2015), the eight-foot-tall yellow sculpture that just landed at the Brooklyn Museum for an exhibition titled Something to Say. I took the opportunity to invite Kass into the studio to talk about her work, her thoughts on the art world (she's a pessimist), the role of art today, and more. I also got to ask her something I've always wanted to ask her, particularly since she's so well known for her Warhol-inspired Barbra Streisand series: Does she have a favorite song by Streisand? And a special thanks to sound artist Bradford Reed, who performed this past weekend as part of the 24-hour Sonic Transmission Archive event at the Newburgh Open Studios in Newburgh, New York. I was able to attend the Sunday portion of the event, which is a Wave Farm Partner Transmit project organized by Ethan Primason and Caroline Partamian, and got to hear and record his performance myself. Thanks to the artist and organizers for allowing us to use the sound work.

Are you, at some level, squeamish about the idea of self promotion and building your audience? I consistently promote making connections and building your list as job #1 for the project creator. Getting press and connecting with influencers who could help you promote your project to their audiences is the best way to build a list. Why? Think about it. What do they have that you don’t? An audience. But influencers especially, don't want to be spammed. Top people get dozens of awkward requests every day from people who just don't “get it”. And those requests get ignored. You have to know the right way to approach influencers or they will delete your email, and you will never get their endorsement... Even if your project would genuinely help their audience. In this episode, we speak with one of the best at connecting deeply with experts, Andrew Warner, founder of Mixergy.com. Andrew had some street cred before launching Mixergy.com. He cofounded Bradford & Reed, a greeting card company that was grossing $38.5M per year. After selling the company, Andrew went on to found Mixergy.com. “I created Mixergy to help ambitious people who love business as much as I do learn from a mix of experienced mentors. I do that through interviews where founders tell their stories and courses where they teach a solution to issues that can cripple founders.” Andrew has made connecting with influencers like Tim Ferriss, Gary Vaynerchuk, and over 1300 other world-class entrepreneurs into a multi-million dollar a year business. This episode is filled with a number of dynamite tactics that will help you genuinely connect with influencers and make them want to promote your campaign. But simply following the step by step procedures outlined won't get you very far. Listen closely to how Andrew talks about his deep sense of curiosity and commitment to his mission, and how this will help you build genuine relationships. Your outreach strategy should be built on a foundation of integrity, mutual benefit (as opposed to a “what can I get” attitude), and commitment to your mission. If you do this, you’ll be able to take advantage of the #1 audience building hack: Leveraging someone else’s audience to build your own. When Andrew graduated from college, he founded Bradford & Reed, a company that ran a collection of start-ups. After he sold the last big chuck of that start-up, he took a long vacation, spending his days cycling and traveling. Now, Andrew runs Mixergy.com, where he invites proven Entrepreneurs to teach how they built their startups. On Mixergy, he has had the founders of Wikipedia, Groupon, LivingSocial, LinkedIn, and over 600 other fascinating start-ups.
