Key Topics Covered Life Lessons from Officiating a Wedding Karl opens up about his experience presiding over his niece's wedding. He shares heartfelt advice on partnership, the value of keeping your inner child alive, embracing life's ups and downs, and why “together forever” is a powerful North Star for couples and business partners alike. The importance of mindset—advancing, not retreating, in marriage and business—is highlighted, along with practical methods for maintaining positivity (like using standup comedy as a daily mood boost). Licensing vs. Franchising—Profit Powerhouses Explained Karl breaks down the pivotal difference between licensing and franchising, offering memorable real-world examples: Licensing: Earning royalties from intellectual property (like Disney does by licensing characters for merchandise) with little risk or hard cost. Franchising: Replicating a full business model with training and brand support (think McDonald's, Subway). He spotlights the Blue Man Group's scalable licensing as a model for exponential growth and contrasts it with Siegfried & Roy's limited, high-earning but labor-dependent Vegas act. Karl also details what makes a business franchisable—and why some aren't. Warren Buffett's Rules and Strategies for Success Karl distills Warren Buffett's timeless investment wisdom for coaches and entrepreneurs: Understand and stick to the rules (profit, repeat business). Seek high-margin, habit-forming opportunities (buy for a penny, sell for a dollar). “Rule #1: Don't lose money. Rule #2: See rule #1.” Build a personal brand and keep clients just like getting clients. Practice extreme clarity: know what to say “yes” and “no” to. Harness the power of compounding, but don't wait ten years—use marginal utility theory for rapid incremental growth. Clarity, Focus, and Avoiding Distractions Karl ties elite execution to laser clarity—most entrepreneurs fail because of distraction or lack of clear direction. Eliminating distractions (social media, busy work) is as vital as mastering strategy. He advocates for serving first, delivering value before a sale, and focusing on the biggest problems you can solve. Coaching Operating Systems and Retention Practical advice centers on using a proven coaching operating system (like Karl's Jumpstart 12 or Profit Acceleration Software) to guarantee client wins, profit acceleration, and long-term engagement. If you want to thrive in this season—not just survive it—your sessions have to hit deeper, go bolder, and deliver results that last. I hit my first seven figures as a coach during the 2008 recession—not by chasing trends, but by delivering coaching that delivered results. Because here's the truth: if your sessions don't create real, felt transformation—the kind that shifts identity and anchors power—they're not worth premium fees in any economy. Period. In this episode, I'm breaking down what truly makes a session million-dollar powerful. These aren't just tips. This is your new standard. The six core elements that turn your coaching from “nice conversation” into “holy sh*t, everything just changed.” Because the coaches who are remembered, referred, and richly paid? They don't wing it. They lead it. And it starts here. In this episode: Learn the 6 core elements that turn ordinary coaching into million-dollar sessions. Discover how to create deep, transformational presence with every client. Why identity-shifting is your most valuable (and profitable) coaching skill. Hear examples of language that lands with clients and echoes long after the session ends. Why refining your coaching creates premium results (and premium pricing). In this episode of the Self-Employed Life, I had the great privilege of speaking with Nesha Pai, author of the book “Overcoming Ordinary Obstacles”. Nesha shared how she transitioned from running a fully remote accounting firm to empowering others to pursue their boldest dreams. She further explains how personal tragedies deepened her mission. We explored the difference between courage and bravery, the “Four C's” framework she uses to guide dreamers into bold action, and how cultivating personal style and daily confidence practices can help us show up as the person we're becoming. Nesha's story is a great reminder that taking courageous, intentional steps—especially through life's hardest seasons—can lead to extraordinary transformation. Nesha Pai is the founder of Pai CPA, PLLC, a fully remote bookkeeping firm in Charlotte, NC. She started her firm in February 2011, and was one of the first in the industry to create a fully remote office model, along with giving employment opportunities to primarily to stay-at-home moms. As a single mom, sole owner, she grew from one client on her kitchen table to over 72 with revenues in the multiple six digits. In January 2020 , Nesha published her book “Overcoming Ordinary Obstacles”, which won the award in the Multicultural Non-Fiction category by the 2020 competition of the American Book Fest. She is currently known as an international speaker, activating women and entrepreneurs to go boldly into the life of their dreams by cultivating the right tools to overcome the obstacles in their way. Nesha is a recent breast cancer survivor and was named one of the Top 50 Infulential Women in The Mecklenburg Times (2020 and 2024), on of Charlotte's biggest media publications. 382 Images of Ourselves It's a sad fact of life that we internalize narratives that are made for us at an early age, we are told we are too emotional, that we're too bossy, that we're too big, and if we do not actively try to reframe or unlearn these narratives made for us, we are forced to live out a story someone else made up for us. It is our duty to reach out and take the power back for ourselves, to wield the pen as a mighty sword, and write our own narrative for the sake of our growth and inner peace. In today's episode Sarah Elkins and Lindsey A. Lee, discuss the importance of becoming the person you want to be, showing up for yourself and those you love, and how vital it is for our growth as human beings to sit with the narratives we have about ourselves and decide for ourselves if these narratives are our own genuine thoughts and beliefs or if they were a planted idea. Highlights Is the person you became, the person you wanted to be or the person you needed to be to survive? How do you show up for the people who need you? What stories and perceptions from others are you still holding onto? Quotes “My greatest performance was pretending to be okay.” “There was emotion in my home, it just didn't look like mine. It looked like yelling, fighting, and shutdowns.” Dear Listeners it is now your turn, The thing that I want to ask you, you remember every time at the end of these conversations I'm asking you to consider something for yourselves. My dear friend Netty Owens asked me one time: What is the object in your image of yourself that you would like to hold on to? And I talked about the Hanukkiah, the Jewish candelabra that we use for Hanukkah. And there's one candle that's separated from the rest, so there are 9 holders, 8 for the 8 nights of Hanukkah, and the one is the leader candle or the Shamash. That candle is the one we light first, we say the first prayer and then we light all the other candles with that candle. And I like to think of myself as a Shamash, someone who knows that by lighting other candles I am in no way diminishing my own light and that when we light other candles we bring more light. And for that brief moment when we connect like Lindsey and I did, for two and a half minutes our flames were together which made that an entwined hyper bright flame, even for that one moment, and it changes the energy and dynamic in a room. Guaranteed. So I am asking you listeners, what is your image of yourself? Just like Lindsey wants to be radiant and exudes that radiance when she owns that language, what will be yours? And, as always, thank you for listening. In my work with coaching clients, I guide people to improve their communication using storytelling as the foundation of our work together. What I've realized over years of coaching and podcasting is that the majority of people don't realize the impact of the stories they share - on their internal messages, and on the people they're sharing them with. My work with leaders and people who aspire to be leaders follows a similar path to the interviews on my podcast, uncovering pivotal moments in their lives and learning how to share them to connect more authentically with others, to make their presentations and speaking more engaging, to reveal patterns that have kept them stuck or moved them forward, and to improve their relationships at work and at home. The audiobook, Your Stories Don't Define You, How You Tell Them Will is now available! Most coaches touch on identity work occasionally, treating it as a "check, got it, did that" element in their sessions. But identity coaching is so profoundly impactful that without weaving it into nearly every session, your coaching risks feeling surface-level and light on the transformational shifts clients need to effectively up-level who they are. In this episode, we're diving into why identity-shifting is the core of powerful, profitable coaching—and the secret behind becoming the coach who gets remembered, rebooked, and referred. You'll learn 5 practical ways to start weaving identity coaching into your sessions right now, along with example questions that help you coach deeper, faster. Because when your coaching rewires beliefs, changes decisions, and reshapes identity… your clients don't just grow—they stay, refer, and pay premium fees. This is how you stop winging it and start leading sessions that change lives. In this episode, I talk about: 5 practical ways to weave identity-shifting into your coaching sessions with ease and confidence. Powerful coaching questions that challenge outdated self-concepts and spark immediate breakthroughs. How to normalize the discomfort of growth so your client feels safe stepping into her next-level self. How to anchor a new identity shift with future-based language so results come faster and stick longer. Karl Bryan welcomes AI strategist Caroline Hinton for a deep dive into the rapidly evolving role of artificial intelligence in the world of business coaching. Together, they break down how coaches are leveraging AI for efficiency, measurable ROI, client relationships, and industry relevance—while also addressing key ethical safeguards and practical tips for new coaches. Key Topics & Takeaways: 1. AI's Impact in Coaching AI is already being used (sometimes secretly) by executives and their teams, regardless of top-down adoption. It acts as an indispensable tool, not a threat—think of it as a “brilliant but blunt analyst” that's now part of every leadership circle. Three big shifts: stealth adoption, compressed decision cycles, and democratized simulation with AI tools. 2. How Coaches Are Using AI Massive time savings: AI can organize, summarize, and document calls and workshops in minutes instead of hours. Enhanced client relationships: With routine admin handled by AI, coaches focus on deeper human connections and tailored follow-ups. Powerful diagnostics: Tools like Profit Acceleration Software (PAS) quickly generate profit opportunity roadmaps with minimal data entry, saving time and impressing clients. 3. Demonstrating Value & ROI AI bridges the industry's “credibility gap” by providing both qualitative and quantitative proof of progress. Tools can analyze and track changes in mindset or business performance, helping coaches and clients see tangible results and ROI, updating results in real time. 4. Ethical Considerations Caroline's “Three Cs” of AI ethics: Consent (transparent use and permission), Containment (clear data boundaries and privacy), and Clarity (explainable, source-based results). Coaches should update contracts, anonymize sensitive information, and consider keeping an audit trail of AI interactions to build trust. 5. Advice for New Coaches Treat AI fluency like learning a new sport: start with prompt crafting and develop a regular practice routine. Focus on a “pilot loop”: select a single workflow to automate, measure improvement, and iterate. Harness free online training (from ChatGPT Academy, Google, YouTube) to build AI skills quickly and effectively. 6. Avoiding Overwhelm Filter decisions through: Bottleneck (where do you lose most time?), Anchor (pick one main tool), and Layer (slowly add new tools). Start small, evaluate results, and scale up as you go. 7. Staying Relevant in an AI World Differentiation comes from combining AI-driven insight, compelling storytelling, and an irreplaceable human touch. AI streamlines precision and analysis; coaches add value through empathy, leadership, and psychological depth. Embrace AI as your “superpower,” not a replacement for your unique human perspective. Notable Quotes: “AI is already in the room. It's a tool, not a threat.” “The best opportunity for coaches now is to help clients make sense of AI—decode, challenge, and humanize it.” “At the end of the day... that ability to connect at a human level, to make a difference, to be heard, to influence—are absolutely critical. AI just multiplies your impact.” Resource Links: Profit Acceleration Software by Focused.com ChatGPT Academy For more strategies on elevating your business coaching practice and leveraging cutting-edge AI, check out previous episodes or visit Focused.com. In this episode, Rode Dog and Karl Bryan dive deep into some of today's biggest “hot button” business topics, including Tariffs, AI disruptions, and industry insights for business coaches. They also mix in some fun with Canadian culture, hockey heartbreaks, domains as investments, and give practical advice for coaches looking to future-proof their businesses. Key Topics & Takeaways 1. Tariffs, Trade, and Global Shifts Rode Dog kickstarts with a question about tariffs, leading Karl to discuss how trade wars (like the US-China standoff) are shaking up global production strategies. Example: Apple's iPhone production moving from China to India. While tariffs achieved moving manufacturing out of China, it's not returning to the USA, and may result in higher costs for consumers. Karl predicts India could be the next global superpower due to its English proficiency, young population, and established legal system. 2. The Next AI Boom: Vertical AI Agents AI is evolving fast; Karl introduces the idea of "vertical AI agents" — specialized AI systems designed to automate and optimize niche business processes. Example: Instead of broad tools like ChatGPT, imagine specially-built AI tools just for onboarding new coaching clients or handling unique business tasks. Takeaway: Coaches and entrepreneurs should think ahead about how to leverage AI to streamline their own offerings or improve their clients' systems. 3. Industries Most (and Least) Affected by AI Karl flips the usual question—rather than only asking which industries will be disrupted, consider which won't be. Industries ripe for disruption: accounting, finance, healthcare (especially wearables/predictive analytics), cybersecurity, transportation (self-driving vehicles), inventory management, customer service. Industries less vulnerable: Pest control, roofing, painting—businesses unlikely to be targeted by tech giants or replaced by automation (at least, for now). Expect living and business costs to decrease over time as AI reduces overheads across sectors. 4. Adaptation Mindset: Fear, Anger, and Opportunity Major take-home: Don't let fear or anger about change (like AI) hold you or your clients back. Be proactive—learn, experiment, and adapt. Karl reminds listeners: successful entrepreneurs are lifelong learners. Don't get “owned” by past habits or anxieties—stay focused on yourself and actionable progress. 5. Opportunistic Investing (Stocks & Domains) Rode Dog puts Karl on the spot for a “stock pick”—Karl mentions Uber and Spotify as blue-chip plays, but heavily caveats this is NOT financial advice. Karl also shares his continued belief in premium domain names (.com > .net/.org/.ca) as a long-term, low-maintenance investment—with an eye on branding and digital real estate in the coming years. Note: For Canada-specific strategies, .ca domains are useful for patriotic/niche marketing, but .com still reigns for long-term value. 6. Humor & Human Touch The hosts riff on the heartbreak of being a Toronto Maple Leafs fan and the Canadian experience, adding levity and relatability for their audience. References to newsjacking (tying your marketing to current events), mindfulness, and living a long life (for maximum benefit from the AI age). Karl's Zen Moment / Closing Thought The two emotions most likely to stop you reaching your goals: Anger and fear. To escape the loop, focus less on the unchangeable past/fear and more on next actions. “You'll be remembered for what you refuse to give up on.” It's never too late to retool—Ray Kroc started McDonald's at 52; Colonel Sanders in his 60s. Focus on what you help people build, not just what you say. In this episode of the Awake & Winning Podcast, Kaylor kicks off the brand new “Sovereign Sessions” series with a powerful conversation featuring client and former farmer, Dawn's Dirt. This isn't just another freedom chat—Dawn built a multi-million-dollar farming empire, sold it all, and walked straight into a new mission: helping people grow their own food and reclaim their sovereignty. Dawn is a bold, unapologetic entrepreneur who knows how to hustle—she ran a 36,000 sq ft greenhouse, managed 299 chickens, and sold her goods at multiple farmers markets. But after realizing the farming model wasn't as free as it looked, she transitioned to building an online coaching business with Kaylor's team. They dive into grief, growth, and grit—and the truth about what it really takes to be ungovernable in today's world. Dawn's story will leave you fired up and questioning everything you thought you knew about entrepreneurship. Episode Highlights: sovereignty, farming, entrepreneurship, online coaching, food freedom, business transformation, client success story, ungovernable mindset, rural living, self-reliance, reinvention, purpose-driven business Takeaways: Why sovereignty isn't just about land—it's about income How Dawn turned grief into fuel for a new business The real margins behind traditional farming Why coaching businesses are the new freedom model Trusting the process (and the “boat” God sends you) How to start from scratch without tech skills Building a mission-led business in 2025 If you enjoyed the episode, please be sure to take a screenshot and share it out on Instagram and tag @thekaylorbetts. 381 Rock N Roll Authenticity and living your life in a way that reflects who you are and how you hope to be perceived is something we all strive for, however it can be easy to forget that change and growth is a constant changing cycle, even from moment we are allowed and expected to invent who we are. In this episode Sarah Elkins ruminates on when she joined the rock band she is apart of and how it has helped shape her authentic self as well as how important fun and joy is to the true sense self. Highlights What is authenticity to you? How do you portray your authentic self? Untangling core values from the actions we believe are authentic. How do you want to be known and remembered for? There is no permanent state of the self. Quotes “I was still not rock and roll. I was wearing a persona on stage because it was fun not because it felt like me.” “All that would have been missed if I had decided that my authentic self was not rock and roll.” “What opportunities have you dismissed because they didn't feel authentic?” About Sarah "Uncovering the right stories for the right audiences so executives, leaders, public speakers, and job seekers can clearly and actively demonstrate their character, values, and vision." In my work with coaching clients, I guide people to improve their communication using storytelling as the foundation of our work together. Included with your purchase are two bonus tracks, songs recorded by Sarah's band, Spare Change, in her living room in Montana. Be sure to check out the Storytelling For Professionals Course as well to make sure you nail that next interview!

If you're building a business coaching practice (or supporting entrepreneurs in any fashion), here are 3 powerful takeaways that stood out to me: Clearly Define What You Want: Grab a pen and paper and map out your goals—don't leave your direction up to chance. If you don't know where you're going, any road will get you there. Think in Flywheels, Not Just Steps: Train your mind to see business models as cycles that fuel themselves. Success comes from consistent, iterative momentum—not just one-off tactics. Leaders Aren't Unphased—They're Unbothered: Don't chase an “easy life.” Instead, strive to become someone who stays steady, no matter what challenges arise. That's the real mark of a great coach or leader. Karl always brings a blend of strategic insight and actionable advice that's easy to implement right away. If you haven't tuned in yet, highly recommend giving it a listen! Ready to elevate your coaching business? Don't wait! Listen to this episode now and make strides towards your goals. In This Episode, I Share: Why premium pricing starts with premium delivery, and what that actually looks like inside your sessions. The 3 signature elements of high-impact coaching that make you unforgettable to clients and irresistible to referrals. From time to time I am contacted by someone who says they have an interesting and thought provoking guest who would be perfect for Unstoppable Mindset. Such was the case when I was contacted about our guest this time, Dre Baldwin. Dre and I had an initial conversation and I invited him to appear as a guest. I must say that he more than exceeded my expectations. And now he is back for a second time with us with more stories and insights. You may recall from my first episode with him that Dre grew up in Philadelphia. He wanted to do something with sports and tried out various options until he discovered Basketball in high school. While he wasn't considered overly exceptional and only played one year in high school he realized that Basketball was the sport for him. Dre went to Penn State and played all four of his college years. Again, while he played consistently and reasonably well, he was not noticed and after college he was not signed to a professional team. He worked at a couple of jobs for a time and then decided to try to get noticed for basketball by going to a camp where he could be seen by scouts and where he could prove he had the talent to make basketball a profession. As he will tell us, eventually he did get a contract to play professionally. Other things happened along the way as you will hear. Dre discovered Youtube and the internet and began posting basketball tips which became popular. In this episode we continue to discuss with Dre the lessons he wishes to convey as well as his life philosophy. Dre discuss more about the value and need for personal initiative. He tells us the value of having a personal initiative mindset and how that can lead to high performance. I asked Dre about how playing basketball prepared him for his work in business. His answer will surprise you. It did me. As he points out, his business preparation came earlier and in different ways than playing basketball. I also asked Dre why he left playing professional basketball. Again, his answer is fascinating. I will leave that for Dre to tell you. I hope you enjoy my talk with Dre as much as I. Dre Baldwin provided many lessons we all can use. Who knows? Dre, you and I may talk again. Stay tuned. About the Guest: As CEO and Founder of Work On Your Game Inc., Dre Baldwin has given 4 TEDxTalks on Discipline, Confidence, Mental Toughness & Personal Initiative and has authored 35 books. He has appeared in national campaigns with Nike, Finish Line, Wendy's, Gatorade, Buick, Wilson Sports, STASH Investments and DIME magazine. Dre has published over 8,000 videos to 142,000+ subscribers, his content being consumed over 103 million times. Dre's daily Work On Your Game MasterClass has amassed over 2,900 episodes and more than 7.3 million downloads. In just 5 years, Dre went from the end of his high school team's bench to a 9-year professional basketball career. He played in 8 countries including Lithuania, Germany, Montenegro, Slovakia and Germany. Dre invented his Work On Your Game framework as a "roadmap in reverse" to help professionals with High Performance, Consistency and Results. A Philadelphia native, Dre lives in Miami. In this episode of The Self-Employed Life, I had the great pleasure of speaking with Annette Mason, sabbaticalist and Succession Architect at Trilogy Design Works. Annette shared how intentional sabbaticals can be powerful tools for self-employed individuals to regain clarity, spark creativity, and build sustainable success. We discussed the difference between a vacation and a sabbatical, how to structure one even while running a business, and the importance of designing time away with intention. Annette also introduced her framework of Compass, Maps, and Constellations to help people align with their values, plan with vision, and lean into the support systems around them. Annette uses her background in corporate innovation and personal experience with burnout in order to encourage others to rethink how we work and to embrace sabbaticals as a meaningful part of a resilient and fulfilling self-employed life. There's a quiet, yet powerful illusion many of us live with every single day—and it's keeping us stuck. It's the illusion of separation—the belief that we're disconnected from our true selves, from others, and from the success and fulfillment we crave. This belief is at the root of so much suffering, but most people don't even realize it's running the show.In this episode, I dive deep into how the illusion of separation creates cycles of fear, doubt, and self-sabotage. If you've ever felt like something's missing, like you're disconnected from your power, or if you've been running on empty for far too long, this is for you. You'll learn: — Why the illusion of separation keeps you from true alignment and connection — How constantly striving for external validation only deepens the disconnection — Where this illusion may have come from—and how it might've been planted in your childhood — How to break free from this limiting belief and reconnect with your true selfThis conversation is a wake-up call for anyone ready to end the cycles of suffering and step into a life of alignment, freedom, and true power.–Connect with Deanna:Instagram: @deannaherrinLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/deanna-herrin/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thedeannaherrinWebsite: http://www.deannaherrin.net
