There's the woman who wanted a selfie with a jaguar! The guy who wrestled a walrus! A group of teens who tormented a Siberian tiger! So why do people risk their lives by acting recklessly with wild animals or homemade hot air balloons or worse? When legendary Kiwi middle distance runner Peter Snell pointed scotsman Alec McNab in the direction of Whananui Collegiate in the early 1970s no-one could foretell the influence he would have on scores of athletes who attended the school across fives decades. In the afterglow of the World Championship victory of Whanganui Collegiate graduate Geordie Beamish we chew the fat with the dedicated coach, mentor & administrator.
AFC Bournemouth's stalemate on Sunday saw the Magpies line-up very in a similar formation to when Eddie used to choose his Cherries team that would face the likes of Man City or Liverpool. With Newcastle smarting from their Champions League defeat on Thursday, Eddie needed a reaction from his side on the South Coast, but rather than play in a gung-ho style, Howe used his tactical nous to stunt everything that Bournemouth's wanted to do - giving Iraola's men no width and no space. Whilst he'd have hoped to have nicked a result for the Geordie boys, Bournemouth's defensive solidity equally gave Newcastle a tough time too, therefore the deadlock at Dean Court was hardly a surprise. Sam and Tom sum up a relative "snooze fest" on the South Coast! Hamish Kerr and Geordie Beamish gave sports fans a reason to grin from ear-to-ear this week – two great New Zealanders making their mark on the global stage. In the 3000m steeplechase Geordie shook up the athletics world by mowing down double Olympic winner Soufiane El Bakkali, who was chasing his third consecutive global title. Hamish ladled cherries on his high jump cake, adding the World title to his Olympic title, the Diamond League title, Commonwealth title, and the World Indoor title. With the likes of Walsh, Tanner, Hobbs, Wesche, McTaggart, etc, up with the best in athletics world, a golden age may well be blossoming. John Stewart, former CEO of Athletics NZ told me over 20 years ago that the biggest issue the sport had wasn't lack of talent, it was lack of athletes. He said that they taught the kids how to run, jump and throw, but as they matured, they left for other sports that benefitted enormously from the base that athletics had given them. Olympic and World Championship success is the harbinger of continued participation in track and field. The thought of Kiwi athletes dominating the world stage was a pipe dream, aside the middle-distance glory days and the outrageous success of Val Adams, victory was a rare occurrence. These unicorns hardly stimulated the youth. Now though, the narrative isn't how competing as a junior will set the youth up for careers in other sports, it's about setting up the next generation for triumph at Olympic and World Championship level. Athletes like Kerr and Beamish have proven that we can compete with, and beat, the very best in truly global pursuits. Running, jumping and throwing doesn't cost a heap, and there's not a concussion in sight.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This week on Eavesdroppin' comedy podcast, Geordie & Michelle discuss two tragic celebrity deaths...Geordie heads to Jamaica this episode to look at the life and tragic death of reggae legend Peter Tosh. On September 11, 1987, when Peter Tosh was brutally murdered in his own home, the world was stunned to lose a musical icon. But for the people who were with Peter in his last horrifying moments, they all told police they recognised his murderer – a friend of the singer called Denis ‘Leppo' Lobban. So why did Denis turn from friend to murderer? What was his motivation? What did Peter do to Denis – if anything? Listen now! When 32-year-old Hollywood actress Brittany Murphy suddenly died of pneumonia and anaemia in her home in December 2009, her death was ruled accidental but preventable. But five months later, when her sketchy husband Simon Monjack also died from pneumonia and anaemia, the conspiracy theories went wild about what was REALLY happened. Was black mould involved? How about drugs? Coercive control? Did the government have something to do with it? Listen now to find out more.So pop on your headphones, grab a brown lemonade and join Geordie & Michelle for this week's episode, plus chat about Priscilla Queen of the Desert, vape guns, language mishaps and more, only on Eavesdroppin' comedy podcast. Geordie Beamish is the man of the moment. The New Zealander won a stunning world gold in the 3000 metres steeplechase at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo this week. Beamish's win was so unexpected ... the defending champion didn't even know his name ... and his triumph was all the more impressive after his fall in the heats where he has his face trampled on by a fellow competitor
A year after Olympic heartbreak, Geordie Beamish is a world champion. Today the 28-year-old won the 3000m steeplechase at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo. Ranked 44th in the world, the best in the sport literally did not see him coming, as he surged to victory. Sports reporter Felicity Reid spoke to Lisa Owen.
Geordie Beamish has won the 3000 metres steeplechase at the world championships in Tokyo, making history in New Zealand track. He's the first Kiwi to secure a running victory in the 42-year history of the meet. Athletics NZ chief executive Cam Mitchell was present at the race - and says he believed Beamish had it in him. This week on Eavesdroppin', Geordie & Michelle discuss two miscarriages of justice...When Kathleen Folbigg's son died from SIDS in Australia in 1989, it was a tragedy for her and her husband Craig. So they tried for a second child, who tragically died from epilepsy, aged 8 months, in 1991. When the Folbigg's third child died aged 10 months from a respiratory infection, suspicious were raised. And when the couple's fourth child died, the finger was pointed at Kathleen. There was no evidence, only some sad writings in a diary, yet she was charged with murder and manslaughter and sentenced to 30 years in prison. For 20 years, Kathleen maintained her innocence from behind bars - and then the science of genetics changed everything. Listen now to find out more about Kathleen's story, the junk science behind 'Meadow's law' and the international scientific community who helped free and innocent woman.Geordie follows with an horrific case of mistaken identity. As Stephen Waldorf sat in the front seat of a yellow Mini on January 14, 1983, in London, he had no idea that he was being hunted by police. When the Mini hit a traffic jam, British police flew into action, shooting Stephen at almost point-blank range amidst heavy traffic. What they didn't realise was that they had mistaken him for escaped cross-dressing criminal David Martin. At the time, Stephen was a 26-year-old film editor who was in the wrong car at the wrong time. Listen now to find out what happened to Stephen and David Martin, and how this tragic incident led to a series of significant reforms to armed police policy and training in the United Kingdom. This week on Eavesdroppin', Geordie & Michelle discuss witches, bitches, ghosts, aliens and UFOs...In a century long long ago, Geordie looks at the last witch burned alive in Ireland - the irrepressible Bridget Cleary. Young, smart and entrepreneurial, Bridget was a bit of a live wire in her small rural town. No harm, no foul, you'd think, except when she fell ill at the age of 26, her husband claimed she'd been overtaken by a fairy and burned her alive. Nasty. Listen now for the details! Geordie also examines the naughty Bell Witch from Tennessee, also known as Kate, who in the early 1800s, haunted, tormented and terrorised the John Bell family with tragic consequences. They did have slaves, so, you know. Listen now to hear the story!Michelle follows with two UFO stories, beginning with an Aussie sighting in Western Australia. In late 1991 at the Harold E Holt naval base in Exmouth, Annie Farinaccio had been partying at the base and stayed there too late to get home safely. Cadging a lift to Exmouth with two police officers, she made the 5km journey home with them, expecting an uneventful ride. Except the officers saw something weird in the sky - and it wasn't the first time! Listen now to hear what happened next! She follows with another UFO story - this time, in Varginha, Brazil, when three young girls spotted an oily alien with three lumps on its head in some weeds. Was it an alien? A stray dog? Or a homeless person? Welcome dear listener to First State Kopites. It's August 27th. I'm Paul, joined by Daz. Little different today - just focused on reviewing the Newcastle game - 3-2 to the Reds. Lot to go at - hope to bring some perspective to what ends up being a nice, comfortable:() win.Short version Newcastle turned this into a battle - with the rhetoric beforehand and the actions of certain players. I was fearful for our team's safety.Context - 2 very difficult games against them and their tactics last season. I think it plays into the cautious approach. One of harder aways anyway. And then there's Isak.Theme #1 - More defensive woes:Overall, their onslaught and carnage - words used by the commentator. Couple of chances around the 30 minutes mark, maybe 60 to 65 and then 85 to 95 there was lots of getting it launched. A Hooper call every time they fell down - 62% possession and still lost the foul count 17-15. Forever the minecraft man (Ref Cam). How about we call it both ways was Virg's clear message, but the cards for Liverpool were right, but they appeared a lot more latitude (Trippier, multiple Guimares fouls) Kerkez - indefensible defending - aside from that was he OK?Konate - the high line for the goal - the unfortunate deflection. Missed passes, the unnecessary push on Barnes.Lots of long balls from us, weren't winning enough of the second ballsTheme #2 - the major characters in the battle:Some unhinged emotion out there - determined to intimidate Hugo EkitikeGuimares (yellow for dissent, nothing for all the fouls), Burn (yellow for 2 nasty little fouls on Mo) and then Gordon seemed determined to inflict physical pain on us. Aside from kicking Cody Gakpo in the head, not so much from Joelinton.Tonali - funny that he injured himself, needs a few lessons from Gordon.Note on time wasting - at 30 minutes self-aware Geordie pointing at his watch.Theme #3 - bright spots. The watch without the same jeopardy - Newcastle 0.98 xGAnother late winner against Newcastle. At 2-0 it looked so under control until the high balls/long throws finally have an impact - before 55, we look so comfortable.100th minute - best piece of footy, well if Curtis had connected with Mo's pass in the first half it might have been that.Rio, Ekitike, Gravenberch (his goal was not ‘out of nothing'), VVD, Dom! And Ali.Might take time to see the very best of Wirtz but there are some signsWe'll be back with a preview of the Arsenal game, and then a review of that match next week.. It's a no-holds-barred conversation with footballing legend Paul Cannell — the Geordie striker who lit up mid-1970s Newcastle United, vaulted into the heyday of the North American Soccer League, and left a trail of memorable goals, disciplinary cards, and impish chaos in his wake. Best remembered for his fiery stint with the two incarnations of the NASL's Washington Diplomats, Cannell was as much a headline in the nightlife columns as he was on the sports pages. On the field, he was fearless in the air and relentless in the tackle, leading the Dips in scoring while collecting enough penalty points to draw more than a few league suspensions. Off the field, he became a fixture in DC-area bars and dance clubs, a radio guest of a young new voice named Howard Stern, and — by his own telling — the first soccer player ever signed by Nike, bringing Studio 54-era disco-inspired white boots to the playing pitch. Cannell takes us straight into the heart of those wild years. He opens up about the highs and hangovers of the NASL boom (including stints with the Memphis Rogues, Calgary Boomers & Detroit Express), brushes with legends like Johan Cruyff and Pelé, the infamous “F***in' Hell, It's Paul Cannell” chant that followed him everywhere, and the unfiltered stories that made his memoir as outrageous as its title. Blunt, funny, and never shy of controversy, Cannell reminds us why he became one of the NASL's most colorful figures — and why his name still carries a mix of respect, disbelief, and laughter decades later — especially among DC sportswriters and soccer fans. A short message from me to you:Wow, I can't believe we've hit 50 episodes. So much has changed over the course of this podcast in both my personal and professional lives, but one thing has remained consistent and that is my love of doing this show. Sure, it hasn't always been as frequent as I would have wanted it to be, but I'm always wanting to come back and record. It's given me a chance to just talk about the thing I love with a variety of different people who share a common interest and that is just so damn cool. I think we all want to be heard and this podcast has given me the opportunity to put myself out there. It was scary at first, being a more 'behind the scenes' kind of person, but I am so glad I gave this a shot. The conversations I have had with people, both guests and listeners have made it all so worth it. It's truly humbling knowing people enjoy this show. When I first started Pixels & Perspectives, I didn't know how it was going to be received. I mean, who wants to listen to a Geordie boy gushing about Resident Evil 4 as much as humanly possible?! But no, I have had nothing but positive feedback and lovely comments from everyone who has been kind enough to reach out. The fact that even one person took time out of their day to say 'hey dude, love the pod' means so DAMN much to me. I'm not great at expressing how I feel, but I feel like this podcast has given me the opportunity to grow as a person. Looking back at those initial first episodes is slightly cringe, but I feel like I have evolved for the better over the course of the show as not only a creator but as an individual too. This has been my outlet to talk not just about games, but about life itself. I have no plans on slowing this down. I want to double down on myself and my wonderful guests and I can only hope the next 50 are as fun as the first! I've got plenty of ideas for future episodes and I'm definitely going to rope more of my friends and co-workers into coming on the show to shoot the shit! So from the bottom of my heart, thank you so much for listening. You can follow me on X (Twitter) - @DanJDurkin to keep up to date with all things Pixels & Perspectives. Hosted on Acast. In the 36th Patreon bonus podcast you join me and a fellow Geordie podcaster on location at a theatre in Sunderland which, beneath the curtain calls and festival accolades, hides a tangled past of war, transformation, and in more recent times chilling paranormal encounters. But what would Icy Sedgwick and I experience on this summer's night when the applause has faded and the shadows take center stage? Would we heard whispers from the dressing room? Would we hear the loud footsteps and banging doors that have been heard from the upper floors? Or perhaps we might be fortunate enough to encounter Alice, the mysterious spirit child said to roam the halls. Tonight, let us together ask the question, just how haunted is the Royalty Theatre? This week on Eavesdroppin', Geordie & Michelle look at a sexy AI app gone rogue and an experiment that took a spooky turn ...Do you think you could fall in love with a chatbot? In 2017, an AI companion app called Replika was created and it was way more successful than anyone could have imagined. It started off as a way for its creator to deal with grief and ended up being a bit too sexy for the authorities to handle. People were falling in love. People were getting spicy selfies. And then an update wiped it all away, with people's 'Reps' effectively lobotomised overnight - with devastating results. Listen now to Michelle discussing the rise and fall of Replika.Geordie follows with a look at a 1970s experiment that posed the question: can you create a ghost through sheer belief? When Dr A.R. George Owen decided to gather his students together to see if a group of people could invent a ghost, he wasn't prepared for the results. They created a backstory for the made-up apparition, called him Philip Aylesford - they even went to England to the town they decided he had lived in and then... a few ouija boards and seances later, the ghost of Philip Aylesford appeared. What the huh? The gang is here to recap all of the #CanMNT Gold Cup action with reviews vs Curacao and El Salvador and preview Guatemala, #CanPL and NSL week recap, Marsch's fine gets lessened, we talk about an MLS villain's retirement, preview #TFClive vs Portland and #CanWNT vs Costa Rica and US, and so much malarkey. This week on Eavesdroppin', Geordie & Michelle look at some really bad habits...Would you eat a live cat? Tarrare did. And if you don't know who Tarrare is, he was only the grossest man alive in France in the 1700s. With an insatiable appetite and a stench that lingered, Tarrare was an unpleasant anomaly whose legend lives on. More than that, he had stretchy mouth that could fit a dozen eggs in it, he ate live cats and maybe even nibbled dead people. Geordie takes a deep dive into this human house of horrors... Michelle follows with a look at some strange eating habits starting with Lisa the crazy cat lady. Not only does she love cats, but she also loves licking them - and eating their fur. Listen now to find out if Lisa gets furballs... Michelle also looks at three ladies in the UK who love to munch on sponges, and a pair of twins who respectively enjoy eating candles and old books. Listen to their stories and Michelle's hot takes on pica... So pop on your headphones, grab a brown lemonade and join Geordie & Michelle for this week's episode, plus a voice note from Janika from Amsterdam, chit-chat about cardigans, The British Podcast Awards and more, only on Eavesdroppin' podcast. And remember, wherever you are, whatever you do, just keep Eavesdroppin'! *Disclaimer: We don't claim to have any factual info about anything ever and our opinions are just opinions not fact, sooorrrryyy!
