Inhabitants of the Tyneside region are undoubtedly familiar with the 19th-century song, 'The Blaydon Races'. It describes a journey from Newcastle's city centre to Blaydon to see the races, and even became immortalised in art. The song is traditionally sung in the local Geordie dialect, although over time, some of the language has softened to make it more easily understood by outsiders. Now sung at football and rugby events in the area, the song preserves a slice of history, and the characters that populated the area at the time. Given this month's focus on exploring a city's folk life through its history, looking at a folk song that came to represent the city seems the ideal subject for an episode!  But what are the Blaydon Races, and why did they end up being the subject of a music-hall song? “I had worked too damn hard to get back to the line to just accept defeat and sit there and not even finish the race. I didn't even have to think about it. I just got straight back into it… I think it was a bit of a blessing in disguise since I didn't know what my fitness was like coming in. I thought it was decent, but this was almost an extra test of, ‘Can you fall in the last lap and still make the final? Then alright, you must be pretty fit!' I tried to take it in a positive light. AFC Bournemouth's stalemate on Sunday saw the Magpies line-up very in a similar formation to when Eddie used to choose his Cherries team that would face the likes of Man City or Liverpool. With Newcastle smarting from their Champions League defeat on Thursday, Eddie needed a reaction from his side on the South Coast, but rather than play in a gung-ho style, Howe used his tactical nous to stunt everything that Bournemouth's wanted to do - giving Iraola's men no width and no space.
