This week, Geordie and Michelle are heading to Kingston, New York, for the true-life case that inspired the show Michelle is currently obsessed with, DTF St Louis...When Thomas Kolman was found in his car outside a gym in 2011, the case seemed to turn into something much darker involving a dentist called Gilberto Núñez. Firstly, the pair were friends. Secondly, Gilberto was doing the do with Thomas's wife, Linda. Then there were sedatives, strange behaviour, fake CIA documents, crazy texts... By the time it reached court, you had a jury being asked to decide whether this was a calculated murder or something far less clear-cut, and the outcome isn't quite what you'd expect. Geordie and Michelle deep dive a confusing Australian true-crime case: Gilham family murders. In 1993 in Woronora, Australia, Stephen and Helen Gilham were stabbed to death, their house was set on fire and their son Christopher was found dead downstairs from multiple stab wounds. Older son, Jeffrey Gilham, claimed he had been sleeping in a boatshed in the back yard before rushing to the house after hearing screams, telling police his brother Christopher confessed to killing their parents before setting their mother's body on fire. Jeffrey admitted stabbing his brother in a rage and initially pleaded guilty to manslaughter, however, after a few plot twists, prosecutors eventually charged Jeffrey with the murder of his parents as well. But that's not the end of this true-crime story... Inhabitants of the Tyneside region are undoubtedly familiar with the 19th-century song, 'The Blaydon Races'. It describes a journey from Newcastle's city centre to Blaydon to see the races, and even became immortalised in art. The song is traditionally sung in the local Geordie dialect, although over time, some of the language has softened to make it more easily understood by outsiders. Now sung at football and rugby events in the area, the song preserves a slice of history, and the characters that populated the area at the time. Given this month's focus on exploring a city's folk life through its history, looking at a folk song that came to represent the city seems the ideal subject for an episode!  But what are the Blaydon Races, and why did they end up being the subject of a music-hall song? “I had worked too damn hard to get back to the line to just accept defeat and sit there and not even finish the race. I didn't even have to think about it. I just got straight back into it… I think it was a bit of a blessing in disguise since I didn't know what my fitness was like coming in. I thought it was decent, but this was almost an extra test of, ‘Can you fall in the last lap and still make the final? Then alright, you must be pretty fit!' I tried to take it in a positive light. To be able to do that as comfortably as I did meant that I was in a good spot.”My guest for today's episode is George Beamish, the 2025 world champion in the men's 3000m steeplechase. If you somehow missed it, go back and watch that last lap in Tokyo. It was one for the ages. George was 11th with 400m to go, behind the world record holder and the reigning four-time global champion, but this is textbook George we're talking about. The guy who has made a career out of chaos and closing speed in those final stages of the race.In this episode, he'll put you in his shoes for the final lap and how he flipped the story of that race on its head.
