Like the saying goes, "better late than never", the Camerosity Podcast is back with Episode 91, which is dedicated to cameras of the 90s. Which 90s you prefer, 1890s or 1990s, all 90s cameras are welcome! Joining Anthony, Paul, Theo, Stephen, and Mike are returning callers, AJ Gentile, Ira Cohen, Miles Libak, Nick Marshall, Robert Rotoloni, and Will Pinkham and we cover a wide range of 1990s cameras and technologies. Paul starts off with some stories about mini labs and how single use cameras became a big thing. We dive into bridge cameras, including the Olympus IS-2 which Mike gave rave remarks to. We discuss a large number of point and shoot cameras including premium models by Nikon and Konica, and ponder why the Olympus Stylus Epic is so popular today. We talk about some dead end technologies from the 90s such as Minolta's ill fated Creative Expansion and Canon's obscure barcode scanner for the EOS 10S. Not all technologies from the 1990s were failures though as the 1990s was the first decade of digital cameras. Models like the floppy disc Sony Mavica and Nikon D1 were great cameras with a historical significance which helped prove that digital photography had arrived. We round out the discussion with why Theo loves the Mamiya 7 so much and how it compares to the Mamiya 6, Robert shares some info on the development of the Nikon S3 2000 edition, and we have a thorough discussion on Kyocera's Contax SLRs. As always, the topics we discuss on the Camerosity Podcast are influenced by you! Please don't feel like you have to be an expert on a specific type of camera, or have the level of knowledge on par with other people on the show. We LOVE people who are into shooting or collecting cameras, no matter how long you've been doing it, so please don't consider your knowledge level to be a prerequisite for joining! The guys and I rarely know where each episode is going to go until it happens, so if you'd like to join us on a future episode, be sure to look out for our show announcements on our Camerosity Podcast Facebook page, the Camerosity Discord server, and right here on mikeeckman.com. We usually record every other Monday and announcements, along with the Zoom link are typically shared 2-3 days in advance. For our next episode, we decided to explore the Italian camera industry as its not often discussed in camera collector circles. While Germany, Japan, the Soviet Union, and the United States were well known as makers of fine cameras, a great number of really cool cameras were made in Italy such as the Rectaflex, Ducati Sogno, Gamma II, and other models by Bencini, Durst, and Ferrania. Join us if you're a fan of cameras from this "boot shaped" country, and see if we can manage to fill an entire episode without getting distracted! The end of the year is almost here, and the guys and I were getting that itch to record something, so on a dreary Boxing Day, we all got together for a spontaneous episode to catch up on what we've been doing. We did not post the join link this time, but we managed to coerce our friends Dan Cuny and Ray Nason to join us for some post-Christmas camera discussion. To help us find things to talk about, we decided to tackle a request made earlier this month in the Camerosity Facebook group, asking for more detail about Contax cameras which we were happy to do. We get into some history, some real world reviews, advice, and other Contax nonsense. Everything from the pre and post war Contax rangefinders, the East German Contax SLRs, and the Yashica/Kyocera Contax cameras were discussed. In addition to Contax discussion, Mike gives an update on what became of the Detrola 400 he "borrowed" from Roberts Camera, Dan shares his thoughts on his most recent review of the Ansco Memo and we talk about Memo cameras. Anthony shares his photographic adventures he went on traveling to New Zealand, and Paul confesses his love for adapting Contaflex 126 lenses! In this episode of the Fully-Booked podcast, we dive into the fascinating world of alternate history fiction with the 2016 Hulu miniseries 11.22.63, based on Stephen King's 2011 novel of the same name. While King is primarily known for his horror works, 11.22.63 showcases his versatility as a writer, blending elements of science fiction, historical fiction, and thriller to create a compelling narrative centered around one of the most pivotal moments in American history: the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. The Kennedy Assassination and Its Aftermath To fully appreciate the premise of 11.22.63, it's essential to understand the historical context of the Kennedy assassination. On November 22, 1963, President John F. Kennedy was fatally shot while riding in a motorcade through Dealey Plaza in Dallas, Texas. The alleged assassin, Lee Harvey Oswald, was apprehended shortly after but was himself killed by nightclub owner Jack Ruby before he could stand trial. The assassination marked a turning point in American history, setting off a chain of events that would reshape the political and cultural landscape for decades to come. In the years following Kennedy's death, several other prominent figures, including Malcolm X, Robert F. Kennedy, and Martin Luther King Jr., would also fall victim to assassination, further deepening the sense of turmoil and unrest that characterized the 1960s. The Premise of 11.22.63 11.22.63 follows the story of Jake Epping, a high school English teacher from Maine who discovers a portal that transports him back to October 21, 1960. His friend Al Templeton reveals the portal to him. He has been using it to attempt to prevent the Kennedy assassination, believing that doing so could change the course of history for the better. When Al becomes too ill to continue his mission, Jake takes up the mantle, traveling back to the 1960s and assuming a new identity as he attempts to unravel the mystery surrounding Oswald and the assassination. Along the way, he becomes entangled in the lives of several characters, including Sadie, a beautiful librarian with an abusive ex-husband, and Bill Turcotte, a young man who becomes Jake's reluctant ally. The Butterfly Effect and the Obdurate Past One of the central themes of 11.22.63 is the idea of the butterfly effect - the notion that even small changes in the past can have far-reaching and unpredictable consequences. As Jake delves deeper into his mission, he begins to realize that the past is not as malleable as he initially believed and that his actions may be having unintended effects on the future. This idea is embodied in the character of the Yellow Card Man, a mysterious figure who serves as a warning to Jake about the dangers of meddling with history. The past, the Yellow Card Man suggests, is obdurate - resistant to change and prone to pushing back against those who try to alter it. Differences Between the Novel and the Miniseries While the miniseries stays largely faithful to the broad strokes of King's novel, there are several notable differences between the two. In the book, for example, the character of Harry Dunning, one of Jake's adult students whose family was murdered by his father in 1960, plays a more prominent role, with his story serving as a test case for Jake's ability to change the past. The miniseries also expands the role of Bill Turcotte, who becomes a more active participant in Jake's mission and develops a closer relationship with Sadie. Additionally, the ending of the miniseries diverges slightly from that of the novel, offering a more bittersweet and ambiguous resolution to Jake and Sadie's story. In Closing Despite these differences, both the novel and the miniseries of 11.22.63 offer a compelling and thought-provoking exploration of the allure and the perils of alternate history. By focusing on one of the most significant and enduring tragedies in American history, King invites us to consider the ripple effects of our actions and the ways in which the past, for better or worse, shapes the present and the future. Through the character of Jake Epping, we are forced to grapple with the moral and philosophical implications of attempting to change history, even with the best of intentions. While the prospect of undoing a great wrong or preventing a terrible tragedy may be seductive, 11.22.63 suggests that the consequences of such actions are ultimately unpredictable and potentially catastrophic. In the end, 11.22.63 stands as a testament to the enduring power of storytelling to illuminate the human condition and challenge our assumptions about the world we inhabit. Whether you're a fan of Stephen King, a history buff, or simply a lover of great television, this miniseries is well worth your time - a haunting and deeply affecting meditation on the nature of time, fate, and the weight of the past. In this conversation, I talk with Cal Schwartzentruber and discuss experiences with thru-hiking and setting FKTs (Fastest Known Times) on various trails. We talk about the challenges and motivations behind attempting FKTs, the importance of planning and preparation, and the differences between the Appalachian Trail (AT) and Pacific Crest Trail (PCT). We also touch on the growing popularity of FKTs and the potential for more competitive times in the future. Follow Cal on Instagram: Takeaways Thru-hiking and setting FKTs require careful planning and preparation, especially when it comes to food and gear choices. The Appalachian Trail (AT) and Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) offer different challenges and experiences, with the PCT being more scenic and well-maintained. FKTs on longer trails often have limited competition, making it an opportunity for thru-hikers to set impressive times. The popularity of FKTs is growing, and more competitive times are expected in the future as athletes optimize their strategies and take advantage of advancements in gear and weather forecasting. Thru-hikers have a unique advantage in FKT attempts due to their problem-solving skills and ability to make decisions on the go. The choice between the AT and PCT is subjective, but many hikers prefer the PCT for its stunning views and more straightforward logistics. Sound Bites "There's always that, you know, uh, yeah, you just got a fucking record on some things, but you're like, ah, well, actually it's not actually that great of a record and I could have done it better and all these things." "The longer the trail is, I think the more competitive I am. But then you get into like, I would not probably be as competitive on like something like the PCT, but unsupported life. This is a niche that, um, there's not really any competition." "PCT is my pick. I would do the PCT over and over and over and over and over again. I loved that trail and the AT, I had a fantastic time. Wouldn't change anything about it and don't regret a second. However, I don't know that I'll ever do that one again." This episode of 'The Daily Mastermind' is focuses on the concept of transforming life at a 10x level rather than a 2x. We will talk about the 80-20 principle, and how you should let go of 80 percent of your focus, and concentrate on higher quality, not quantity. Instead of basing actions on past perspectives (2x thinking), move towards visions of future, seemingly impossible versions of yourself (10x thinking) to unlock new opportunities. You need to envision the future, 10x version of yourself clearly and work towards it, even amidst uncertainty and fear. I'm so glad you joined us today and appreciate your support of the show. Title: The Differences Between a $10,000 and $100,000 Profit Deal Description: In the intricate world of land investing, the profit margin can vary significantly from one deal to another. But what sets apart a deal that brings in $10,000 from one that yields $100,000? In this insightful episode of "The Real Estate Investing Podcast," Ron and Dan Apke delve into the nuances and operational similarities between deals of differing profit scales. "The Differences Between a $10,000 and $100,000 Profit Deal" explores: Operational Similarities: The Apke brothers discuss how, surprisingly, the operational aspects of closing a deal don't differ vastly whether you're aiming for a $10,000 or $100,000 profit. They break down the process, highlighting how similar efforts can lead to vastly different financial outcomes. Scalability and Efficiency: Understand why focusing on larger deals can be more scalable and financially efficient. Ron and Dan explain that larger deals, while potentially involving more capital, don't necessarily require proportionally more work, making them a lucrative focus for scaling your business. Risk and Reward: Dive into the risk-reward ratio of smaller versus larger deals. The brothers discuss how bigger deals might carry more risk but also offer significantly higher rewards, and how to balance this in your investment strategy. Capital and Resources Allocation: Learn about allocating your resources, whether it's time, money, or effort, and how this allocation might shift depending on the size of the deal you're pursuing. Case Studies: Real-life examples from the Apke brothers' own experiences in closing deals at both ends of the profit spectrum. These case studies provide practical insights into what to expect and how to navigate each type of deal. Whether you're new to land investing or looking to shift your focus to more profitable deals, this episode is packed with valuable information. Ron and Dan provide clear, actionable advice that demystifies the process of scaling up in land investing, showing how aiming higher in your deal-making can significantly boost your business's success. Tune in to gain an understanding of how to strategically approach land deals of varying profit margins and make informed decisions that align with your business goals. Stage 5: Crossing the ThresholdAt some point at the end of the first act, your story may showcase a moment where your protagonist needs to Cross the Threshold between their Ordinary World and the Special World they will be experiencing as their inner or outer journey begins. The hero leaves their ordinary world for the first time and crosses the threshold into adventure. Here I offer three ways Crossing the Threshold affects your story.1. Shifts Your Story Into Gear2. Introduces the Differences Between the Ordinary World and the Special World to Come3. Begins Your Protagonist's Character ArcContact me for the bonuses!I have three examples from movies clips that illustrate Stage 5.In Cast Away when things go wrong that he steps out of his normal work routine and into the Special World he's about to experience — and it is vastly different from what he is used to.In The Lord of the Rings, Frodo and Sam literally cross the threshold between the world they've known, The Shire, to a world they are unfamiliar with — beyond The Shire. In Stand By Me, the boys walk onto the train tracks leading away from their hometown of Castle Rock — and it's both a literal and metaphorical threshold they are crossing.Check out my Substack articles for additional reflections.https://micksmith.substack.com/Mick, The Doctor of Digital, Smith mick.smith@wsiworld.comBurning America: In the Best Interest of the Children?https://burning-america.comAlso available on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Walmart, and TargetLeave a message for The Doctor of Digital:https://podinbox.com/thedoctorofdigitalpodcastInstagram: burningamericacommunityPatreon burningamericacommunity:https://www.patreon.com/SmithConsultingWSITheDoctorofDigitalPodcastListen, subscribe, share, and positively review The Aftermath:https://www.podpage.com/the-aftermath-the-epidemic-of-divorce-custody-and-healing-1/he-saidshe-said-the-one-about-getting-involved-in-parental-alienation-legislation/Substack:https://micksmith.substack.com/Commercials Voice Talent || Narratives Voice TalentDo you want a free competitive analysis for your business? Today, we'll unpack, What is the death benefit? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HbpNX3c35bo So if you want to see the power of the death benefit… tune in now! Table of contentsWhat Makes Up the Guarantees of the Death Benefit? What Are the Differences Between the Death Benefit Guarantees of Whole Life Insurance and Universal Life Insurance? What Are the Chronic Illness and Terminal Illness Riders, and How Do They Compare to Long-Term Care Insurance? What Effect Do Outstanding Loans, Reduced-Paying Up, or Chronic/Terminal Illness Riders Have On the Death Benefit? What is Human Life Value? What Does Life Insurance Do for Your Estate?Book A Strategy Call What makes up the guarantees of the life insurance death benefit? The life insurance death benefit is the amount that is guaranteed to be paid out to your listed beneficiary at your death. What Makes Up the Guarantees of the Death Benefit? The death benefit is the amount that is guaranteed to be paid out to your listed beneficiary at your death. The key to guaranteed death benefit is having whole life insurance, which is permanent. When you have whole life insurance, you're in a position where you know that the death benefit will pay out at whatever point you die, between now and the end of that policy. And at the end of the policy, if you are still living, the insurance company still guarantees the death benefit to pay out to you. This is not the case with term or even universal life insurance (which claims to be permanent). This also means that when you pay premiums, you're paying into your policy with the certainty that you'll get a “return.” Whereas with term insurance, you can pay into it for 20 years and never see a dime back. What Are the Differences Between the Death Benefit Guarantees of Whole Life Insurance and Universal Life Insurance? While both whole life insurance and universal life insurance are technically permanent insurance, universal life insurance has several variables that can cause a policy to implode or lapse. In other words, universal policies are typically not permanent in practice. One of the major factors that makes universal life difficult to maintain is because it has flexible premiums. While many people assume that this gives them the flexibility to pay whatever they want, that's not the case. So if you choose to pay less, you can underpay for your insurance coverage. This then eats into your cash value account, which may implode the policy if you continue to under-fund it. With whole life insurance, premiums are guaranteed as well. This means that they cannot increase, so your base premium will always be enough to cover the costs of insurance. You won't risk underfunding your policy, and you have the freedom to pay more in the form of PUAs if you wish. What Are the Chronic Illness and Terminal Illness Riders, and How Do They Compare to Long-Term Care Insurance? The chronic illness and terminal illness riders allow you to use your death benefit while you're still living. If a physician certifies that you have an illness that will cause your death, many insurance companies now grant access to the death benefit while living at no additional cost. Long-term care insurance is an additional cost, as well as some additional stipulations about when you can use it. Plus, the insurance company can increase premiums over time because of the costs when you have Long-Term Care. While we want companies to be able to offer the coverage, they do have to stay in business. What Effect Do Outstanding Loans, Reduced-Paying Up, or Chronic/Terminal Illness Riders Have On the Death Benefit?
What am I supposed to tell the press? Training exercise. Isn't that the usual BS? It's the start of Marvel Month on Cinemavention, and to kick things off, we are joined by Jeffrey Sax and Tom DiGianvittorio to discuss the movie Iron Man. Spoiler alert on Willie's opinion about the movie since he forgot to mention it during the episode, he gave the movie a thumbs up, but could the MCU as we know it existed without Iron Man doing well in the box office? Plus, these terrorists at first glance seem to be really dumb for not killing Tony Stark, but we explain why it's not in their best interest to do so and who remembers MySpace? Ahh, the good 'ole days of social media.Differences Between the Movie and the Comics:Thanks to MaxTrollbot in the Cinemavention Discord for providing this insight!- Tony Stark is head of Stane International which takes over Stark industries with the secret help of SHIELD and drives Tony into becoming a homeless alcoholic while Rhodes has to fight Stane..- But the way they do it in the movie is soo much simpler, even though it never really addresses how Tony manages to get back control of Stark Industries. I mean, you don't get to be the CEO again just because you killed the guy who took the job from you. And it's doubtful that the board would be eager to reinstate Tony since he still doesn't want to make weapons.- Also, Stane's minions are called Chessmen for some reason.- In the comics he's a strategist, the closest allusion in the movie to his chess obsession is when he asks Pepper for the paper so he can do the puzzle.- He really was a minor, third-tier villain even by Iron Man standards.Kent's full email about Forrest GumpJeff's TwitterTom's TwitterSupport the show on Patreon!Join the watch party for the next movie!Music from https://filmmusic.io"Welcome to the Show" by Kevin MacLeod (https://incompetech.com)License: CC BY (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/) Get bonus content on Patreon See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

00:00 - Differences Between the NFL and MLB 15:38 - #1 Song of the Day 27:50 - Ask Us Anything
Hey Stepparents! As most of you have probably experienced, being a stepparent is different than being a biological parent. In today's episode I'll be exploring some of these differences. Find the show notes for this episode at synergisticstepparenting.com/6.Differences Between a Stepparent and a Biological ParentYou probably remember the beginning of your stepparenting journey. For many of us it's an abrupt transition with no time to prepare. It felt a bit like plunging into a lake where the temperature was a lot colder than you were expecting. And maybe you didn't see the rocks beneath the surface. And didn't know that the lake is full of snapping turtles and piranhas. At least this is how it was for me. Maybe some of you can relate. My relationship with my partner was pretty new so we were still getting to know each other. We were finding our groove and not yet on solid ground. On top of all that there was this other little person thrown into the mix with her own personality, needs, and wants. It was a big adjustment for me.A blended family doesn't have the typical rhythm that a bio family does. In a bio family the couple meet and start to build a life together first then later bring a child into the picture.Additionally, there isn't the benefit of time during the pregnancy phase. When you know the human addition is coming soon but you have about 9 months to get ready. Time to adjust yourself, the dwelling, and your life.Stepparenting Felt Like a Culture ClashMy partner and I discovered early on that we had similar values. In spite of that, there were massive differences between how we did things. The dynamics were reminiscent of my early days as a Russian immigrant coming to America. I didn't fully understand the culture and was unsure of my readings of situations and how to respond. As a stepparent, you are often the only one in this situation within the family. Certainly you're the only one in your household in this position since your partner already has a long-standing connection with the child, not to mention the rest of the family.Everything back then felt like a new adventure. It was fun but took a lot of energy at times. I felt cared for and supported. But I also experienced lots of moments of real isolation. Feelings of strong belonging were far and few in those days.It was hard. The Challenges of Belonging in a Blended FamilyIt makes sense that connecting wouldn't be easy because it takes time to learn who people are and all their tells. Let's face it as human beings we all have generally the same emotions. But what triggers or initiates emotions varies for each of us.How we express emotions looks different for many of us too. Someone might laugh when they are upset. Someone else cries when upset. A third person carefully hides any trace of being upset. When a fourth person gets upset they suddenly get quiet. We each respond in our unique way and it's only natural that the code to correctly interpret these nuances won't be cracked from just spending a few hours together. It's natural to be protective of your feelings in vulnerable states. And common to be uncomfortable being transparent with someone you don't know well.Children often have mixed emotions because you are here and not their other parent. There is inherent conflict for them because their loyalties are split between the two of you. And they might be feeling guilty about liking you.Your partner feels pressured because of the high stakes. They are probably constantly weighing the pros and cons worrying how their child is adjusting to the new arrangement. As a stepparent it's easy to accidentally put your foot in your mouth ...Find the FULL transcript for this episode here. 4BYsHsCLAfU7lKx9SM53

For almost 40 years, Doug Bugie has travelled the globe in search of the big billers and recruitment leaders of the future. He's personally sold 800 recruitment franchises in 40 countries that collectively have filled over 100,000 assignments. It's a great privilege to interview Doug for the second time. In this episode, Doug shares his unique experience of helping James Caan, of Dragon's Den fame, launch Humana International. In 7 years, they grew Humana to 200 offices in 27 countries and $90m before the business was acquired by MRI in 2001. Doug reveals some of the insights gained and lessons learned from working closely with James and other recruitment industry legends. You will hear a comparison between recruiting in the UK and the US, plus Doug's insightful perspective on the future of the recruitment industry, the need to balance between humanity and technology, and much more. Doug represents FPC, a top 1% performer in the recruitment industry as ranked by Forbes, and ranked top 50 in franchisee satisfaction by Franchise Business Review. Outside the US, Doug represents Antal International, ranked by Recruiter Magazine as one of the UK's fastest-growing recruitment companies and listed on the Sunday Times International Fast Track. Episode Outline and Highlights [2:08] The industry is roaring back! Listen to Doug's assessment of the current market. [5:36] Balancing humanity and technology in recruitment. [6:58] Building a business with James Caan. [12:23] “Observe the masses and do the opposite.” [18:30] How the ‘recruitment to recruitment' industry was pioneered. [20:27] Comparison between the UK and US recruiting industries. [27:34] Doug shares the humble beginnings of Humana International Bouncing Back From Failure to Build a Business with James Caan In our interview, Doug describes his colourful career in executive search starting in the 80's with MRI (Management Recruiters International) and how a failure to achieve one of his life's ambitions ultimately led to him building a business with James Caan. Doug describes how he put his entire life savings into running for a seat in the US Congress and lost everything. While this was a crushing disappointment at the time, this setback opened the door to a new opportunity -- one he most likely would never have entertained had his congressional ambitions been fulfilled. When James Caan invited him to move to the UK in 1992 to start a new business, it didn't seem on the surface like the incredible, career-defining moment that it later proved to be. At the time, James was a charismatic young “upstart” with an office above a Fish and Chip shop. However, Doug recognized the leadership qualities that would eventually enable James to achieve spectacular success in building and scaling companies globally. As Doug puts it, “James could attract people and get them to buy into the mission and get them to really want it.” A Solid Career of Wisdom and Experience Doug's more than three decades of career in recruitment enabled him to gain experience and learnings you will find valuable in today's competitive environment. In our conversation, you will hear him share how James Caan revolutionised the executive search industry in the UK and pioneered the ‘rec to rec' sector. He highlights one of the keys to James' extraordinary success -- a philosophy that Doug believes still resonates today: “Observe the masses, and do the opposite.” The Differences Between the US and UK Recruitment Industry and the Invention of the ‘Recruitment to Recruitment' Having worked and lived in both the UK and the US, Doug shared his observations and personal opinion on the differences between recruiting in both markets. In particular, we discussed the “rec to rec” space since Doug witnessed the birth of that industry. Hear his insights about this subject and how it is relevant to the ongoing evolution of the recruitment industry. Doug Bugie Bio and Contact Info Doug Bugie's career in recruitment spans over three decades where he's mainly worked in the niche of recruitment franchising. He is the president of Next Wave Global Franchise Systems LLC, which has formed a strategic partnership with FPC National to exclusively sell FPC Franchises. Doug has extensive experience in the recruitment franchise industry - from being an investor, top executive, to becoming a consultant. He was CEO and president of Antal International Network - an executive recruiting company with 130 offices spanning 33 countries, with Tony Goodwin. He was the CEO of Norman Broadbent, based in the UK. Arriving in London in 1992, Doug also co-founded the recruitment franchise Humana International with James Caan, the entrepreneur on the well known UK TV show Dragons Den. Humana, in only 7 years, grew to over 200 offices in 27 countries and over $90m. Humana was awarded the top international franchise in the UK by the British Franchise Association. This time, Force Fed Sci-Fi takes a look at an overlooked classic in The Thing From Another World (1951 film) and discussed during our review about how problematic an author can truly be, why American history from the 1950's provides context for the film, and does this film actually surpass its subsequent remakes? Let's dig in and find out... Differences Between the Film and Novella It's important to note that this film is based on a novella originally titled Who Goes There? by John W. Campbell and let's just say there were many differences between the source material and the final product: The novella takes place at a research station in Antarctica while the film is set in the Arctic Circle. The design of the Thing is actually considerably different. In the novella, it's described as having three eyes and is noted for having telepathic abilities and the ability to shapeshift. In the film, The Thing has become a plant-based humanoid creature with the ability to regenerate and subsists on blood. The crew of the research station in the novella is notably all male while the film contains a somewhat diverse crew of male and females. The film is still male heavy, it is the 1950's after all The novella is much darker than the film with the research station containing a full working farm containing a whole stable of cattle who are then slaughtered so they will not be killed by The Thing and the story ends with 14 of the station's inhabitants being gruesomely killed whereas in the film, only 2 of the researchers are killed along with the sled dog team John W. Campbell In addition to the notable differences between the novella and the film, the author Campbell, wasn't exactly the nicest of people. He is described as taking the “devil's advocate” approach to many topics and had many problematic views on slavery, integration and the Civil War. He was also a notorious chain smoker and even disputed the link between smoking and lung cancer and even embraced many branches of pseudoscience in the hopes of expanding medical discovery. He also wrote and glowingly praised the historical (villain) L. Ron Hubbard and began to experiment in Dianetics. Let's just say Campbell was problematic to say the least. At The Time of the Film.. The Thing From Another World was released in 1951 and it's important to understand the American cultural lexicon at the time. The Korean Conflict was just ramping up and would end in a stalemate a few years later. This was a serious blow to American morale as we were coming off a victory lap following World War II and would affect our fighting forces for years to come. The McCarthy Hearings on Communism were being televised across the nation and would abruptly end when Senator McCarthy was called out during a now infamous hearing with the quote “Have you no decency, sir?” and his reputation ruined following numerous reports by now legendary journalist Edward R. Murrow. For further context on the McCarthy Hearings, we definitely recommend the film Good Night and Good Luck. In addition to these historical events, Hollywood was ruled by what has become to be known as the Hays Code, a set of self-governing rules film studios went by in order to make their films as non-offensive as possible. For a complete breakdown of the rules outlined in the Hays Code, check out this link here or make sure to listen to our podcast episode. Basically, every film produced in Hollywood from the 1930's to the late 1960's followed this code and was eventually replaced by the rating system we know today. Interesting side note though, the first film to receive a PG-13 rating was the 1987 Cold War film, Red Dawn following the suggestion of Steven Spielberg. In hindsight, the Hays Code can be seen as censorship, but films did not receive the same type of releases we see now. Many films were boycotted regionally and the Code was a way of assuring that films could enjoy nationwide releases.
Dr. Kevin Tabb fell into medicine through his training as a medic in the Israel Defense Forces, and after medical school and a five year residency, he soon entered the world of healthcare IT. As president & CEO of the newly-formed Beth Israel Lahey Health system, this diverse background gives him a unique perspective to navigate the constantly-changing healthcare landscape where technology continues to play an increasing role.Dr. Tabb now has a prominent position in the greater Boston area’s storied history of driving healthcare innovation. He’s leading the region’s second-largest health system – including 4,000 physicians and 35,000 employees across academic medical centers, community, and specialty hospitals – formed by the March 2019 merger of the Beth Israel Deaconess and Lahey Health systems, along with Anna Jaques, Mount Auburn and New England Baptist Hospitals.Creating a single and cohesive point of care will be one of the most important attributes of a successful health system in the future, according to Dr. Tabb. The dynamics of delivering on this promise are especially acute as health systems across the country merge, and it’s a key focus at Beth Israel Lahey Health.During this episode of Healthcare Is Hard, recorded live on stage at the Digital Health Innovation Summit, Dr. Tabb talks to Keith Figlioli about a number of issues critical to delivering on his vision for a successful, modern health system, including:The Build vs. Buy Debate. When it comes to partnerships with new entrants in the healthcare market, new technologies, or other aspects of running a next gen health system, working with third-parties and bringing everything together makes it more difficult to create a cohesive organization. That’s why Dr. Tabb’s preference is to explore internal development first, a luxury large and growing health systems are more likely to have the resources to accomplish. But he recognizes the reality, knowing when and how to investigate if a third party brings something unique that would be too complex to develop in-house.Solutions Looking for Problems. With a background in health IT, Dr. Tabb is approached almost daily by various companies and investors and says the majority of what he sees comes from people offering niche solutions to small problems. Unless a solution is focused on the larger challenges associated with helping the different aspects of a health system come together and operate more cohesively, he’s much less likely to be interested.Evolving Access Points for Care. The way people access care is rapidly changing. Dr. Tabb compares this shift to the emergence of digital photos and Kodak’s failure to adapt because revenues from film and chemicals weren’t impacted at first. Kodak failed to realize soon enough that pictures can be made in many different ways. And to avoid a similar fate, traditional health systems need to quickly recognize the many different ways and different places care can and should be delivered. They need to adapt and deliver the seamless and unified experience that patients are starting to demand.Differences Between the U.S. and Europe. As someone who grew up in California, but served in the military, went to medical school, and did his residency in Israel, Dr. Tabb is frequently asked for his opinion on the biggest differences between U.S. and European healthcare. He points to the lack of a single system of care, and talks about how critical it is to figure out a new approach so people don’t fall through the cracks – especially when they’re sick and most vulnerable. To hear Dr. Tabb talk about these topics and more, listen to this episode of Healthcare is Hard: A Podcast for Insiders.

We’ve heard how you can snag a deal by going with a fixer-upper, but is that really true? Today we’re digging in on the dos and don’ts with house hunting! Finding and Buyer a Fixer Upper, Not a Money Tip Buying a house – – it’s probably the biggest purchase you’ll make. And depending on where you live, it can be a crazy market. I know here in Raleigh everyone is saying it’s a seller’s market. And I believe it. I’ve seen houses get listed and that sold sticker put on the sign in less than a week. Which is great if you’re a homeowner – property values are going up. But not so much when you’re trying to buy a house, which is what my mom wants to do. She’s recently accepted a job here in Raleigh and after she’s sold her current home, she’s looking to buy. She’s asked me to tag along and help. And I‘m happy to. It’s just this means we’re going to have to really hunt for a deal. A fixer-upper would work for her. And maybe you’re in the same boat – you’re looking for a diamond in the rough that you can buy a great price and then you can fix it up the way that you want. The tricky part is making sure you don’t get stuck with a money pit. Which is why I’m glad Louis Guillama is on today to offer his expertise. He’s the Vice President of Real Estate Operations at Coastal Credit Union. He has three decades of experience with the real estate agent side as well as home renovations. 3 Invaluable Lessons from Kristin Scroggin You’ve got to have a plan for attracting and retaining top Millennial talent. The people with the most influence are those that have the money and those that have the power - Millennials have the power right now in sheer numbers. If you’re not willing to adapt and spend money on training to work with Millennials you will be dealing with high turnover. This week, host Sue Dyer speaks with Kristin Scroggin the differences between the generations and the key differences between millennials and other generations. Learn how to engage the millennials on your team and to retain them and mitigate turnover. About Guest Kristin Scroggin (1:40) Kristin Scroggin will be the keynote speaker at the Collaboration 2019 International Partnering Institute Conference. Kristin started a company called GenY Communication Strategies. Kristin has her Master’s in Communication Studies, her Bachelor’s in Communication Arts and has been a communications lecturer at the University of Alabama for the last eleven years. Her passion is generational diversity. Kristin’s Journey to Becoming the Founder of GenY Communication Strategies (3:25) Kristin was originally a communications lecturer and she wanted to make all of her students love her so they would want to get the best performance out of them – it didn’t work She wanted to figure out how to get her millennial students to reach their maximum capacity and started researching Millennials, then moved on to other generations to explain generational differences She’s worked with all the branches of NASA, military defense, hospitals, construction, Alabama linemen, and Solid waste The Definition of Millennials and Other Generations (6:45) Millennials are anyone born between 1985 and 2005 Kristin’s company looks at “micro-generations” in 5- to 7-year increments because things change rapidly They look at how kids are raised to see why they are how they are Millennials were raised by Flower Children (the hippies of the 60’s and 70’s), the iGen generation was raised by GenX The iGen are the first group since the GI Bill with an interest in returning to trade so we need to start focusing on high-school kids Why Should We Focus on Millennials? (10:30) About 46% of the American population is under 33 years of age Companies are alienating the new generation that’s coming in, but to stay afloat, you need to attract the top of the generation The Millennial generation is 86 million - the largest generation we’ve ever had There will be a massive flip in the way work is done when Millennials get fiscal power 2030 is the year where things will flip dramatically to Millennial power Millennials will stay in power for pretty much their entire career How Millennials Became So Different? (15:25) Almost everything that we hate about the Millennials is what we as a culture put in place. We pushed self-esteem on this generation and now their rates and standards are extremely high, they won’t just put up with things. Millennials have taken to hear the complaints from their parents that they heard as children and have responded accordingly. For instance, the parents of the Millennials had an extremely high divorce rate so many Millennials don’t marry until later or have kids. We’ve watered down what it means to be excellent, the parents of Millennials decided to give participation trophies, not the Millennials themselves. What is an Action Plan to Take to be More Effective with Millennials? (20:24) The younger generation has not been refined or polished because we’ve removed the tribal style of learning and refining and disempowered refiners We need to mentor/be a Coach to the Millennials You have to train people on soft skills - the Millennial generation is great at knowledge, but they’re missing wisdom How to Approach Learning with Millennials (24:25) We have to build rapport and relationships with our employees. You have to get people to respect you before you put a lot of commands on them. “Just because I said so” doesn’t work for this generation because that’s not what their parents said to them. A lot of why we make people wait is because we went through the same thing - the waiting game. Millennials walk away from jobs with a lot less threat because the nest they land back in is very soft. If we don’t modify in order to attract and maintain the top, we will have to deal with the bottom of the barrel. We are going to have to provide more training, continuous feedback, and catch them doing right as often as we catch them doing wrong. What it Looks Like to Mentor a Millennial (31:10) Millennials work really hard for two characteristics: Someone they respect that’s consistent, even-tempered, and authentic. They need to be a little bit afraid of you, there has to be a respect line that has been drawn. The Challenges Kristin Has Faced and How She Improved (33:02) Her original idea was to bring in some of her former students, train them, and then farm them out. All of those people were Millennials and both of the people managing them had very different management styles. The Millennials were not working well for the more rigid manager, and Kristin had to have a conversation with the other manager. Kristin was frustrated on both ends: with the hyper-office mindset and also with the Millennial side - you have to find the happy medium that works the best for your corporate culture. What Are the Differences Between the Generations? (40:40) First ½ Baby Boomers (64 – 74 years old): Raised by traditionalists, the older ones went off to WWII. They were pressured to get a job. Their job and identity are intertwined, and competition is huge for them. Second ½ Baby Boomers (54 – 64 years old): Raised by hippies and HR emerges from this generation - they appeal to the whole self and building rapport. This generation would love to retire but can’t. They got hit hard in the recession. GenX (44 – 54 years old): The least collectivistic of all of the groups of people. Most want to come in, do their work and go home. Xennials (34 – 44 years old): Latchkey children, won’t tolerate micro-managing. They don’t need social elements of generations. iGen’s (23-13-year-olds): They’re a boomerang. They don’t want to be like the older millennials and are completely addicted to their cell phones. GenZ (13-year-olds and below): They’ve experienced life post-9/11. Parents want them to be super independent. If that child was born to people later in life, they’ll still be bubble wrapped vs. children coming in now who will have more freedom. This is the first episode in our “What do they believe?” series. The purpose of this series is not to debate opposing theological traditions but rather to learn about them. At the end of the series we will record an episode where we will respond and defend in more detail what we believe. As part of this series we will also be addressing how Christians from different traditions can and should discuss our differences while remembering that we are part of the same holy and apostolic church. Our guest on this episode of Theology Gals is Pastor Brian Thomas author of Wittenberg vs Geneva: A Biblical Bout in 7 Rounds on Doctrines that Divide. Pastor Brian is an associate Pastor of Grace Lutheran Church in San Diego, CA, a Congregation of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod. He is also a contributor to 1517 The Legacy Project blog Thank you to 1517 The Legacy Project for arranging this interview and providing copies of Pastor Brian's book which we will be giving away. 1517 Legacy is committed to, “Supplying theological resources that strengthen congregations, and modeling ways of engaging the culture in a manner that is thoughtful, courageous, and Christ-centered.” Learn more here about “What is 1517?” If you are interested in our contest, a chance to win a copy of Wittenberg vs Geneva, please see the post for this episode, either on our Facebook page or on our Twitter, like and share the post which will put you in the running to win a free book. How Christians from differing traditions can and should, discuss/debate our differences in a generous, kind, and honest fashion while recognizing we all belong to the one, holy, catholic, and apostolic church: Be clear on both sides and major on the majors. Understand what it is we disagree about. Be respectful and kind. Say what you mean, but you don't have to say it mean. Be honest and don't argue about something you know little about. To make up for missing our Red Queen podcast, we share our brief thoughts about Victoria Aveyard's Glass Sword. We give an update on the books we're reading. Michael couldn't be on the show, but he left us with his thoughts on the movie! Overall, we weren't very impressed with the movie. Kristy and Addie enjoyed a number of the actors. We all agree that Four's action scene was pretty cool. What was up with those creepy showers? Where was Matt Damon? Speaking of Matt Damon, what was up with the Martian landscape? It felt like they dumbed-down Tris in this movie. Did the movie split well? What will 'Ascendant' be about? Where was Uriah? That ending scene was... weird. It's safe to say that we were weirded out by the movie. In fact, we say the word "weird" over 30 times in this episode. We probably used the words "awkward" and "strange" just as many times in this review. Bookmarked is brought to you by Audible.com! (RIGHT CLICK THE IMAGE TO SAVE THIS EPISODE TO YOUR COMPUTER) John and Paul have been given a new Critical Assignment. With the success of The Six Million Dollar Man Season 6 by Dynamite Comics, it stood to reason that a The Bionic Woman Season 4 comic would follow. But as most bionic fans know, The Bionic Woman does not usually feature the same kind of story telling as her male counterpart. Dynamite's previous attempt at a Bionic Woman comic was less than stellar. Is it possible they can get it right by using the original source material? Writer Brandon Jerwa has been tapped for the assignment and he sits down with John and Paul to discuss what he feels it will take to make The Bionic Woman a successful comic for both the fans of the series and the general comic book reader. 00:00 - Show introduction 03:00 - Bionic Renaissance 04:10 - Brandon Introduction 08:00 - "Where you a fan of Six Million Dollar Man & Bionic Woman?" 12:45 - Viewing the Differences Between the Two Bionic Shows and Characters 19:55 - Announcing The Six Million Dollar Man Season 6 21:30 - Where Dynamite's First Bionic Woman Went Wrong 23:25 - Picking Up Where "On the Run" Left Off 25:55 - An "All Ages" Comic 29:00 - Dialogue That Sums Up Jaime Sommers 31:25 - How Brandon Got the Gig 35:20 - Brandon Will Come Back If We're Not Satisfied 35:55 - Who From the Series Will We See? 37:10 - "Will We See the Coach House?" 38:35 - "Where Does the Story Take Place in Relation to Six Million Dollar Man Season 6?" 40:10 - Likenesses of the Characters 44:45 - Brandon's Documentary and the Prism Award 53:45 - Brandon on the Web 55:20 - Sign Off Comment on this episode here or by writing abionicpodcast@gmail.com Brandon's Links Facebook Twitter BJ Shea's Geek Nation Podcast Brandon Jerwa is a writer, musician, and recently, a documentarian. He's been writing comics for over 10 years - and is no stranger to licensed tie-in storytelling. In 2003 he broke into the industry - literally - as a fan, submitting a GI JOE script to DEVILS DUE COMICS who was publishing the title at the time. They liked it, hired him to write the story for A G.I. Joe anthology and then gave him the main book to write a few months later. He even had a GI JOE action figure made in his likeness! In 2006 Brandon went to work for Dynamite Comics, doing a stint on their HIGHLANDER tie-in before enjoying a very popular run on their BATTLESTAR GALLACTICA tie-in 2007. Since then he's written for more high-profile comics publishers like IMAGE COMICS, VERTIGO and DC Comics. In 2011 Brandon ventured into documentary filmmaking with an ambitious peak into the world of comic books and telling the stories of the people who make them. We'll talk more about that later on. In 2012 Brandon’s work on the Graphic Novel SHOOTERS about a Post-9-11 IRAQI War veteran WON a PRISM AWARD recognizing the comic’s accurate depiction of mental illness. Brandon is no stranger to podcasting, you can hear him DAILY on BJ SHEA'S GEEK NATION PODCAST which covers all things geeky in NEWS, TV, MOVIES, COMICS. On JUNE 15th of 2014, based on the success of their SIX MILLION DOLLAR MAN SEASON SIX title (by James Kuhoric), Dynamite revealed to BLEEDING COOL.com that they would be releasing a BIONIC WOMAN SEASON FOUR title in SEPTEMBER. Written by Brandon Jerwa, art by David T. Cabrera and a cover for issue one by Sean Chen along with a photo cover of series star Lindsay Wagner. We'll get to Chen's cover in a moment, too. In that brief news item, Brandon is quoted saying, “If you’ve never seen the show, or haven’t read James Kuhoric’s Six Million Dollar Man comic, you’re still totally fine, longtime fans won’t be left out in the cold, though. The Bionic Woman: Season Four is a continuation of the classic TV series, so I’m definitely treating it as such in terms of continuity and thematic carry-through.”
