If you are human, you feel a kind of resistance when it comes to making decisions, having those conversations, and generally taking decisive steps into leadership. What are we worried about? Well, there surely are some things we can fall prey to and need to guard against when using the authority of the role to serve others, but unless we get over the awkward first steps, we cannot truly serve well. Watch on Philo! - Philo.tv/DTHAlex is reluctant to go to her sister's baby shower. She knows her family will just bombard her with the usual questions—why she isn't married to her boyfriend, Finn, yet, and why he's only working at a record store.Meanwhile, Finn heads up to her room, strips down, and starts dancing to "Buttons," expecting Alex to walk in soon. But instead of Alex, her sister's kids walk in. Awkwardness ensues. At the end of the night, Alex talks to her mom, with whom she has a great relationship. She even works for her mom's company. But then her mom drops a bombshell—she's dying.Cut to some time later: Alex is lying in bed alone. Her mom has passed. She heads to the lawyer's office for the reading of the will. Expecting to see Old Man Sullivan, she's surprised when a young lawyer named Brad walks in instead. And Brad only brings bad news. First, Alex and her family must keep the house for at least a year and can't sell anything inside it—not that she minds. But she's shocked to learn that her mom made her sister-in-law the new CEO of the business. As for Alex, she won't receive her inheritance right away. Instead, Brad hands her an envelope with instructions to open it when she's alone.Back home, she puts in the DVD from the envelope. Her mom appears on the screen, explaining that she wants Alex to live her best life, starting with completing her old "Life List." Every time she checks something off, she'll receive another DVD from her mom. And when she finishes the list, she'll get a final envelope. What's inside? Who can say.Determined to start fresh, Alex breaks up with Finn. She begins tackling the list—reading Moby-Dick, learning the piano—but it's harder than she expected. So, she pivots, tries stand-up comedy, and earns her first DVD.Meanwhile, Brad keeps showing up, being unexpectedly nice to her. She's starting to enjoy herself overall, but then she reconnects with her dad—only to learn he's not actually her biological father. Her mom had an affair with a man named Johnny Alvarez. He is her real father. She starts working at a school and meets a guy named Garrett. They start dating, and things are going great—until she throws a dinner party with her friends, and Garrett hates them. That's… unfortunate. After a long search, she finally tracks down Johnny. She takes a road trip with Brad and his girlfriend, Nina, to meet him. But Nina starts sensing something between Brad and Alex—and she's right. Nina eventually heads home, and Alex and Brad end up sleeping together. The next morning, Alex meets Johnny, and they agree to get breakfast the following day. But he never shows up.On the way home, she and Brad get into a huge fight. He tells her she should break up with Garrett because "that guy sucks." She does. Then, in frustration, she tears up her list—after all, the only thing left is to "find true love."But then Old Man Sullivan gives her the final DVD and envelope anyway, and it's all very sweet. Finally, she realizes—she does love Brad. She goes to find him. They kiss.

A few months ago, I made a professional connection, and the energy felt good. As we neared the end of our working relationship, I realized I didn't want this connection to end – but there was no logical way for us to get together. We weren't in the same industry. I didn't know if we had overlapping hobbies. The whole situation got me thinking about this weird gray zone we sometimes find ourselves in when we can't rely on proximity to make friends. It can be awkward … almost like dating! But unlike dating, friendship expectations can be unclear. Will this be a close friend? Or an acquaintance? What do you actually want to come out of this connection? There will probably always be uncomfortable moments in new friendships. But I believe that if we talk about it, then hopefully we can accept that this is a normal part of the process and keep pushing forward. In this episode you'll hear about:The gray zone of making new friends and the importance of proximity and consistencyVulnerabilities in starting new friendships, including admitting we want to hang out with this person againThe tendency to overthink messages and interactions, and how sometimes making new friends is like starting a new exercise routinePushing through the discomfort of “friend dating” and navigating things like health restrictions in social settingsResources & Links:Check out the roots framework as featured in Episode 12.Like what you hear? A Bit of Optimism is on hiatus this week, so we're revisiting one of our favorite conversations! In this episode, Simon talks with psychologist Ty Tashiro about social awkwardness and why being awkward can actually be a superpower.*****Awkwardness gets a bad rap. But being awkward is often an indicator that someone has extraordinary.Psychologist and author Ty Tashiro has spent a great deal of time studying (and living!) social awkwardness. He's fascinated by how the same traits that cause us social embarrassment can also drive exceptional accomplishment. As a fellow awkward person, I was delighted to sit down with Ty and discuss the competitive advantages of social awkwardness, and how sometimes what society labels a weakness turns out to be our greatest strength.This...is A Bit of Optimism. For more on Ty and his work check out: his book, AWKWARD: The Science of Why We're Socially Awkward and Why That's Awesometytashiro.com

We've all had those painfully awkward moments–those cringey, uncomfortable feelings—the ones that make you want to disappear into the floor. But what if awkwardness wasn't something to escape, but something to embrace? Today, I sit down with workplace performance expert Henna Pryor to unpack why discomfort is actually a good thing.Henna shares her personal journey from feeling like an outsider as a child of immigrants to discovering how awkwardness can be a growth accelerator. She also reveals surprising research on why confident people don't avoid awkward moments—they just recover faster. Plus, we dig into how social skills are eroding in the workplace, why millennials report the most superficial relationships at work, and how different generations handle awkwardness. If you've ever second-guessed yourself before speaking up in a meeting, hesitated before trying something new, or let fear of embarrassment hold you back, this episode will change the way you think about discomfort. If this episode gave you the push to stop overthinking and embrace the cringe, share it with a friend! When your horse hesitates, pins its ears, or struggles with a movement, what's really happening? It's easy to jump to conclusions—assuming resistance, pain, or a training gap. But the key to true understanding lies in separating observation from interpretation. In this episode, Stacy Westfall explores the importance of neutral fact-finding when assessing your horse's body, why riders often misread behaviors, and how small mindset shifts can lead to major breakthroughs. Key Takeaways: We naturally assign meaning to behaviors. Riders often assume their horse "won't" do something when the truth may be that they can't—yet. Seeing clearly takes practice. Developing the ability to separate facts from assumptions allows for better decision-making in training. Video is a powerful tool. Watching recordings of your rides can reveal overlooked details and refine your ability to analyze movement. Awkwardness doesn't always mean wrong. Some physical discomfort—like an unbalanced canter transition—is a normal part of building strength. Not all resistance is pain-related. Horses, like people, can develop habits or attitudes about work, even after an initial physical issue is resolved. Learning to assess your horse's body with clarity will improve your training, communication, and overall partnership. This episode is part of a four-part series based on the Four Square Foundation Quiz, designed to help you pinpoint your next best step. Tune in next week as Stacy explores the next quadrant: The Horse's Mind.

In this episode of the You Can Mentor podcast, Zach Garza interviews Mike McGarry, a seasoned youth pastor and theologian, about the critical role of mentoring in youth ministry. They delve into the importance of presence in mentoring relationships, discipleship, and how to assess a mentee's spiritual relationship with God. Mike highlights the significance of identity in Christ, emphasizing the need for youth to understand their role as image bearers of God. The conversation also explores the challenges and strategies of mentoring youth in a spiritual context, touching on the awkwardness often felt in initiating conversations about faith, selecting the right biblical texts, and practical tips for overcoming barriers to spiritual discussions.Throughout their dialogue, Zach and Mike stress that mentoring requires intentionality, authenticity, and vulnerability, especially when it comes to building relationships that foster spiritual growth. They discuss how mentors can guide young people, particularly those without reliable adult figures in their lives, by providing meaningful affirmation, support, and insights into Christian doctrine. Join radio hosts Rebecca Wanner aka 'BEC' and Jeff ‘Tigger' Erhardt (Tigger & BEC) with The Bend Radio Show & Podcast, your news outlet for the latest in Outdoors & Western Lifestyle News! Season 5, Episode 222 Easy Tips for Budgeting a Group Trip Without the Awkwardness Planning a group trip? It's exciting—but navigating different budgets can feel like tiptoeing through a minefield. How do you ask about money without stepping on toes? Here's how to handle this sensitive topic with care and make your getaway a success. Start with an Anonymous Budget Survey Instead of asking everyone face-to-face, keep it discreet. Send a private message or use a Google survey. Example: "Hey everyone! I'm thrilled to plan our trip. Could you share a budget range privately so I can ensure the plans work for everyone?" Travel Hacks to Keep Costs Down Travel off-peak: Book trips in spring or fall for better deals. Flight alerts: Sign up for platforms like Hopper, Going, or Secret Flying. Group discounts: Look for free breakfasts, group hotel rates, or all-inclusive packages to simplify planning. Budget Breakdown Tips Allocate costs to key categories: 30-40%: Accommodation 20-25%: Transportation 15-20%: Food and drinks 10-15%: Activities Build Flexibility into the Travel Plan Incorporate “choose-your-own-adventure” slots for activities. For example: Some may enjoy a spa day while others prefer hiking. Plan compromises like street food nights to balance pricier meals. Set Payment Expectations Early Before the trip, decide: How to split costs: Equal split or pay-your-way? Use tools like Splitwise: This app simplifies tracking and settling expenses, keeping everyone stress-free. With a thoughtful approach, you'll create a trip that's enjoyable and budget-friendly for all. Cheers to memorable adventures! Send us a textGuess who's back? Back again. An old caller reemerges from the shadows, kicking off a wild and chaotic episode of Not Well. This week, the conversation dives into everything from holiday highs and lows to existential musings and absurd tangents that only Bobby and Jim can pull off.The holidays take center stage as the duo unpacks the weirdness of gift-giving, the stress of unwrapping presents in front of an audience, and the sheer absurdity of obligatory workplace gift exchanges. There's also a candid exploration of body image struggles, including a post-holiday battle with weight gain and self-perception, peppered with a bit of humor and self-deprecation.The episode doesn't hold back as the conversation veers into a discussion about evolving porn preferences, from fantasy-driven storylines to public settings and everything in between. This naturally leads into a reflection on queer spaces like The Eagle, where they share their appreciation for the raw, unapologetic energy of these establishments and lament the loss of that authenticity in some modern spaces.Drag culture takes a turn under the spotlight, with sharp critiques about how mainstream attention has dulled the creative edge of drag performances. There's a longing for more boundary-pushing art and a frustration with the predictability of certain performances. Despite the critiques, there's still respect for drag as a vital part of queer expression and culture.New Year's Eve antics are recounted in vivid detail, including awkward party moments, over-the-top social interactions, and a bit of introspection about the exhausting nature of large gatherings. There's a hilarious tangent about small talk and how draining it is, especially in high-energy social settings. The episode is rounded out by a series of unfiltered rants, including one about restaurant service during the holidays and the oddly frustrating world of twist-tie trash bags. A vision of a world without buttholes becomes a centerpiece of one of the more absurd yet surprisingly profound tangents. Finally, the episode wraps up with a critical take on RuPaul's Drag Race and a promise to keep challenging norms while staying true to the chaotic, queer energy that defines Not Well. This episode is an unfiltered, hilarious, and thought-provoking ride, filled with the trademark humor and raw honesty that listeners love.Support the showAs always you can write us at nowellpodcast@gmail.com or call us at (614) 721-5336 and tell us your Not Wells of the week InstagramTwitterBobby's Only FansHelp us continue to grow and create amazing content, like a live tour or just help fund some new headphones when needed.
