Dr. Dan sits down with leadership researcher, author, and mindset expert Dr. Ryan Gottfredson to explore what it truly means to become better—better leaders, parents, partners, and human beings. Drawing from his groundbreaking work on vertical development, Ryan reveals why most of us are overdeveloped in “doing” and underdeveloped in “being,” and how this imbalance limits our growth, purpose, and connection in every part of life. During this powerful and deeply human conversation with Dr. Dan, Ryan shares personal stories of emotional neglect, independence, healing, and the courageous work of rewriting one's internal operating system. Dr. Ryan and Dr. Dan dive into the profound relationship between self-awareness, compassion, resilience, and authentic leadership and why healing isn't a soft concept, but a neurological upgrade that changes how we respond to stress, relationships, and opportunity. Listeners will learn the difference between horizontal development (knowledge, skills, and doing) and vertical development (mindsets, presence, and being), and why the most effective leaders elevate through intentional inner work. This episode is for anyone seeking deeper purpose, greater self-awareness, healthier relationships, and a more grounded, empowered approach to leadership. Whether you're guiding a team, raising a family, or navigating your own personal evolution, today's episode offers inspiration, clarity, and transformative possibility. This episode starts with an apology and an update. It's been a wild stretch—hospital visits, birthday mishaps, broken teeth, truck trouble, cows and pigs headed to the processor—but also a lot of grace and gratitude.Adam shares about Lady Haylee's recent medical scare during pregnancy, the prayers from patrons, and what it's like to walk through real uncertainty as a husband and father. The guys reflect on how quickly life can tilt from “normal” to “barely holding it together,” and yet how God can still anchor everything in hope and gratitude.Over whiskey (a Pseudo Sue malt from Iowa), Adam and David shift into the main topic: spiritual blindness—how easy it is for men to be convinced we're right, standing for the truth, and yet be totally off the mark.Drawing from Scripture, the lives of the apostles, St. John of the Cross, Aquinas, and even Dante, they explore:In This Episode:Real-life trials and gratitudeHaley's hospitalization and recoveryKids' birthdays, chipped teeth, and car troubleHow chaos at home can either crush us or deepen our trust in GodMiracles, doubt, and the desire for “proof”“If God would just give us a miracle, evangelization would be easy”The everyday miracles we ignore: the Eucharist, confession, conversionsWhy even those who saw Jesus' miracles still doubted and fledSpiritual blindness in the apostles and in usPeter's “I'll never deny you” moment—and the fall that followedThe apostles missing who Jesus really is, even after years of walking with HimLooking back on friendships and seasons of life and realizing, “I was blind to how unhealthy that really was”How our culture and attachments distort our judgmentBringing politics into our faith and letting ideology outrank the GospelThe overworking dad: when “providing” becomes an excuse to avoid the harder work of fatherhoodAttachment to success, busyness, and being “the guy” who makes everything happenThe “theology guy” who knows tons about the faith but never actually prays or servesSt. John of the Cross and Aquinas on blindness of mindDisordered attachments as a cause of spiritual blindnessMisapplying first principles and deforming prudenceWhy ignorance isn't always innocent—especially when it's chosenDante, betrayal, and why some wounds cut so deepWhy Dante places traitors and betrayers at the bottom of hellThe pain of realizing someone you trusted was not who you thoughtHow misplaced trust in people can tempt us to distrust GodPractical ways to grow in spiritual clarityDaily (or even twice-daily) examination of conscienceHonest fraternal correction and asking your friends to tell you the truthLiving a real ascetical life: fasting, temperance, and taming appetitesSubmitting your judgment to the Church instead of making yourself the standardTurning to the sacraments—especially confession and the Eucharist—for renewed visionAlong the way, you'll also hear:A story about accidentally using cardamom instead of cinnamon on a first dateThe strangely satisfying joy of a perfectly vacuumed game roomThe quiet fulfillment of husbandry—raising animals, caring for land, and stewarding what God has givenThis episode is an invitation to ask hard questions:Where am I convinced I'm right, but might be deeply wrong? What am I attached to that clouds my judgment?Who do I trust enough to tell me what I don't see about myself? If you've ever looked back on a season of life and thought, “How did I not see

Om Rupani is a teacher, author, and speaker who's been teaching about BDSM, polarity, and man–woman relating for almost 2 decades. He's also the author of Prerequisites to Ecstasy, a no-nonsense guide exploring what it truly takes to create the love and intimacy we say we want.Today, his work focuses on helping men embody their masculinity with confidence and depth, supporting women in cultivating passionate, harmonious relationships with their men, and guiding singles and couples to consciously integrate elements of BDSM into their intimacy.Integral to his teachings are explorations of the Dom and Sub archetypes as a pathway to greater self-knowledge and erotic depth.Om deeply believes that a thriving erotic life sits at the heart of a fulfilling partnership.Through his integrated approach, courses, and workshops, he helps men and women explore and embody their Eros in all its nuance, depth, and expression, guiding them to build relationships that are not only functional and thriving, but erotically alive.I first came into contact with Om's work earlier this year.Even though I was completely new to the world of BDSM, reading his book and listening to his podcast gave me a felt sense that this field might offer an access point to expand my capacity for greater leadership and depth. And all I can say is that the impact his training had on me was both surprising and deeply inspiring. That experience led me to invite him into this conversation, exploring how BDSM can help us become better leaders. In our interview, we explore:The concept of containment: what it is, why it matters, and how a man can begin to cultivate it.What it means to become self-contained, grounded, and anchored in one's own core. How couples can move beyond habitual ways of relating by embodying different archetypes, especially the Dom and Sub partnership, to invite more Eros and flow into their dynamic. Why Om believes men should pursue the path of sexual competence, not as a performance, but as a way of deepening confidence, presence, and connection. This is the first time on the podcast that we touch on the realms of BDSM and kink, and I understand that this can bring up curiosity, or even resistance, for some listeners. My encouragement, as always, is to stay open and notice what arises within you.In my own life, this is how I've approached many fields of work that, at first, felt confronting yet sparked my curiosity at the same time.Over time, that approach has supported me in discovering deeper truth about what I value, what I care about, and who I am.—Connect with Alex Lehmann:
Ops isn't just about keeping the lights on anymore. As Aušrinė Keršanskaitė, co-founder of Operations Nation, puts it – today's ops leaders are expected to drive growth, protect culture, and build resilience. And if you've ever felt like the “glue” holding everything together without always getting recognition, this one will hit home.In this episode of The Handbook: The Operations Podcast, Aušrinė joins Harv to talk about the evolution of operations, the community she's built for ops leaders everywhere, and what it takes to step into leadership with confidence. Here's what we get into:How so many of us “fall into” operations without a playbook – and how to build one for yourselfThe loneliness of ops roles, and why communities like Operations Nation matterTraits that define a brilliant ops leader today – from resilience to influence over executionHow startups' scrappy mindset can sharpen your approach to tooling, automation, and scalingThe real opportunity with AI in ops (hint: it's not about replacing your team)Whether you're a COO, head of ops, or still figuring out your path – this conversation is packed with lessons on how to elevate your role and find support along the way.Additional Resources:

Ryan explains why most leadership training focuses too much on “doing” and not enough on “being”—and how that shift makes all the difference in navigating complexity, creating value, and leading others in meaningful ways.We talk about the difference between dependent, independent, and interdependent thinking, why constructive criticism is such a powerful test of our growth, and how true leadership is less about checking boxes and more about becoming someone others genuinely want to follow. If you've ever wondered how to elevate your mindset, strengthen your leadership, or simply become a better version of yourself, this conversation is packed with insights you won't want to miss.
Ryan Gottfredson explains the transformational journey from being focused solely on doing better to becoming better as a human being, drawing on his research and latest book. He introduces the distinction between our "doing side" (talents, knowledge, skills) versus our "being side" (quality of our internal operating system), showing how genuine transformation requires upgrading who we are, not just what we do.• Most developmental efforts focus on the doing side, but transformational growth requires improving our being side• Vertical development upgrades our internal operating system to respond more effectively to challenges• The becoming better journey starts with awakening to our current wiring and how it affects our responses• Most organizations promote high-doing leaders without considering their being side quality• Microsoft's transformation under Satya Nadella demonstrates the power of high-being leadership• 70% of adults have experienced trauma that has wired their nervous system for self-protection• Surface-level strategies like meditation and deeper approaches like mindset work can help refine our internal operating system• The goal is becoming a "brighter light" in our spheres of influence through personal transformationReach out to Ryan if you take his mindset assessment or read his book "Becoming Better" – he's offered to connect with listeners and discuss your results.I'd love to hear from you! Hi This is Brad Weisman - Click Here to Send Me a Text MessageWhat if the key to unlocking your potential isn't learning new skills, but upgrading your internal operating system? In this profound conversation with Dr. Ryan Gottfredson, we explore the revolutionary concept that transformed his life and could change yours: the distinction between your "doing side" and your "being side."While most personal and professional development focuses on acquiring knowledge and skills, Dr. Gottfredson, author of Becoming Better, reveals that true transformation happens when we elevate our "being side"—the quality of our internal operating system, including our mindsets, emotional regulation, and character. This isn't just abstract theory; it's supported by decades of research across four fundamental mindset pairs that determine whether we operate from self-protection or value creation. The conversation takes a fascinating turn when Dr. Gottfredson shares how his own childhood wiring created an avoidant attachment style that kept his wife at arm's length for 12 years of their marriage. His personal journey of awareness and transformation illustrates how our survival mechanisms from childhood often become obstacles to our success as adults, parents, and leaders.Perhaps most eye-opening is the revelation that 60% of leaders struggle with a fixed mindset—they're more focused on avoiding looking bad than on growth and learning. This ego-driven self-protection prevents them from adapting to increasing complexity, causing both personal and organizational stagnation.Whether you're leading a team, building relationships, or simply trying to reach your potential, this episode offers practical insights into how healing your mind, body, and heart can elevate your "being side" and transform every aspect of your life. As Dr. Gottfredson puts it: "The wiring that we develop to survive our childhood is not the same wiring that we need to succeed as an adult."Take the first step toward upgrading your internal operating system by visiting RyanGottfredson.com for free mindset assessments, and discover how becoming better at "being" might be the most important work you'll ever do.#mindset #ryangottfredson #bradweisman #becomingbetter ---Welcome to The Brad Weisman Show, where we dive into the world of real estate, real life, and everything in between with your host, Brad Weisman!

Carol is back on the mic (you may remember her from Episode 54), and she's bringing clarity, conviction, and a serious invitation to elevate how you show up and speak up. Read the transcript of this podcast Get 14-day access to the Core Leader Library Highlights Ryan talks about personal development and becoming better leaders through understanding our own complexities and healing. He explores the science of sanctification and the difference between merely doing better and truly becoming better, focusing on our "being side"—the quality of our internal operating system—rather than just our "doing side," which encompasses our skills and knowledge. Learning this distinction can help leaders as they support others who are struggling in their lives. Ryan explains how our relationships with risk, failure, conflict, and even ourselves can reveal the quality of our being. Many leaders operate from a place of fear or insecurity, which can limit their effectiveness and impact. Ryan explores the concept of the "window of tolerance," which refers to our ability to manage stress and emotional responses. He explains how a narrow window can lead to reactivity, while a wider window allows for greater emotional regulation and resilience. Understanding this can help leaders create a supportive environment for their congregations. Ryan also encourages leaders to consider their own journeys and the areas where they may need healing. 00:02:00 - The evolution of Ryan's books and the deepening of his leadership concepts 00:05:00 - Mindsets and the difference between vertical and horizontal development in leadership 00:07:00 - The Being Side vs. Doing Side: The importance of focusing on the "being" side of leadership for transformational growth 00:09:00 - Connection between leadership principles and gospel teachings, emphasizing the importance of becoming 00:10:30 - The role of personal healing in effective leadership and the importance of self-awareness 00:12:00 - The window of tolerance and its relevance to emotional regulation 00:15:00 - Personal complexity and its impact on leadership effectiveness 00:20:00 - Exploration of emotional complexity and self-complexity in leaders 00:25:00 - Examining leaders' relationships with risk, failure, and conflict as indicators of their health 00:30:00 - Contrast between survival-focused leadership and purpose-driven leadership 00:35:00 - Investigating the quality of relationships with self, others, and various challenges 00:40:00 - The challenges of people-pleasing and its impact on leadership effectiveness The award-winning Leading Saints Podcast is one of the top independent Latter-day Saints podcasts as part of nonprofit Leading Saints' mission to help Latter-day Saints be better prepared to lead. This is part 5 of our sermon series, "Relationships on Lock," at Fusion Christian Church. In this series, we discuss the importance of relationships and how to create and maintain healthy ones. Here, Pastor Zac teaches us five steps to connect better with other people, and all are focused on in-person relationship.Put Down the Phone.Too many of us are addicted to our phones. We allow them to keep us from personal connection and it is destroying our relationships. Put down the phone when you're with other people and pay attention to them.Look at and Listen to People. When you are interacting with others, look them in the eye and listen to what they say. As Christians, we should desire that others know we are genuinely interested in them and that we care about their lives. Maintain eye contact and listen to other people to demonstrate your care for them.Speak Words of Life.It is overwhelmingly easy to be negative, especially because we are surrounded by it all the time. Because of this, choose to speak positively to people so that you stand out and shine a light in this dark world. Choose to lift up others rather than bring them down. If we can do this it will stand as a strong testimony of the light of Christ.Practice Hospitality. When is the last time you invited people to your home? Hospitality was perhaps the foremost characteristic of the early church, and it should be one of our strongest attributes in the modern church as well. Being inviting and kind to others should never go out of style, and God has told us in his word that he desires his people to be hospitable.Be Fast to Forgive.Bitterness will kill your relationships faster than almost anything else. Remember that all people are broken, and so if you have a relationship with anyone, you are likely to be hurt at some point. Choosing to forgive rather than resent the one who has wronged you will preserve your relationships. Christians must be forgiving people, because God first forgave us.

Tyler Whitmer is an Assistant Athletic Director of Olympic Sports Performance at Boise State University. Tyler was a high school athlete who became intensely interested in sports performance when he had a unique opportunity to train at the Denver Broncos training center. As he transitioned to college, he discovered that he could have a career in this area and eventually accepted a graduate assistantship at the University of Kansas. Tyler discussed how his experiences at KU and at several small universities helped him grow as a person and coach. We discussed how athletics provides a range of experiences that can be both beneficial and potentially harmful for men, depending on the culture and what is modeled for men by coaches and mentors. Tyler mentioned a personal and professional shift that occurred for him during COVID that led him to develop a program called Get Reps. Get Reps is a group focused on helping male athletes consider what it means to be a good man and targeting some skills deficits that he has noticed in the athletes he works with. Finally, we discuss how helping men helps the entire community and some resources for those interested in the intersection between masculinities and athletics.

Welcome back to Becoming Better! In today's episode, we're diving into the beautiful story of Mary and Martha, two sisters who welcomed Jesus into their home during a pivotal time in their lives. As we explore the dynamic between these two women, we'll uncover a powerful lesson about the importance of slowing down, sitting at Jesus' feet, and not giving up on the promises God has for us. In the hustle of life, it's easy to become like Martha—caught up in busyness, distracted by our to-do lists, and overwhelmed by the pressures around us. Jesus addressed Martha's concerns, reminding her that “only one thing is necessary,” which was to prioritize time with Him. What does it mean to truly rest and reconnect with God in our daily lives? We'll explore the profound implications of this Scripture and how it invites us to realign our priorities. Throughout this episode, we will reflect on how Mary chose to be present with Jesus, demonstrating that sometimes, the most faithful action we can take is to linger longer in His presence. We'll discuss the significance of perseverance and how when we stick around—despite our doubts, fears, and life's distractions—we open ourselves to witnessing the fulfillment of God's promises.Join us on this journey of becoming better, learning to quiet the chaos around us and trusting in God's timing. Because when we don't give up, we position ourselves to see the incredible ways He is working, fulfilling His promises right before our eyes.Tune in, and remember: sometimes, waiting and choosing to be still opens the door to seeing God's faithfulness in ways we never imagined.
