Send us a textThe meteoric rise and sudden fall of Milli Vanilli. The 40th anniversary of the groundbreaking Calvin and Hobbes comics. A battle for supremacy with AI over 1970s movie soundtracks.Episode 221 is the appetizer of GenX nostalgia before Thanksgiving week.We start with a rise and fall for the ages. Imagine going from on top of the world to being dropped by your record label in an instant. That is what happened to the pop duo Milli Vanilli 35 years ago this week. In one of the most infamous scandals in music history, a chart-topping group was exposed as frauds and ostracized from the industry. We do a deep dive into the unbelievable but true story of Milli Vanilli.40 years ago this week a new comic strip debuted and changed the way people viewed them. Calvin and Hobbes brought insight and thought-provoking conversations to the typically simple world of newspaper comics. A little boy and his stuffed tiger burst onto the scene, made an immense impact, and then retreated into history, all within the span of a decade. It's a 40th anniversary celebration of the beloved comic strip this week.Me v. AI Top 5 returns with a bang and maybe some funky dance moves. I battle ChatGPT over the best 1970s movie soundtracks while a pair of computer programs battle over who gets to read the AI answers. There is a brand new This Week In History and Time Capsule, where we look back at the creation of the beloved teddy bear. You can support my work by becoming a member on Patreon. We open up the LNK Today Time Capsule and look back on Nov. 1987, ahead of The Game of the Century II between Nebraska and Oklahoma football. Plus Jason Ball of the Lincoln Chamber of Commerce stops by to chat about the Lincoln business community. And the Voice of Nebraska Volleyball, John Baylor, chats about the No. 1 Huskers heading into the next-to-last week of the regular season!
With the unexpected usage of their Time Capsule episode last week. The Say Reporters are working double time to get the ship back on course. Which basically translates to taking this week's episode back to basics with a two topic journey. Topic One is the films that your host-companions choose to watch in that weird time between the end of the Halloween season and the proper beginning of the Christmas/Holiday seasonTopic Two is a game that both Reporters have been playing followed by a discussion about the beat ‘em up successor to Shredder's Revenge that has captured their imaginations.

Snow on the moon? Yes, though not recently... but maybe billions of years ago. Recent discoveries indicate that the early moon, orbiting just 20,000 miles above our planet at the time, may have shared a dynamic magnetic field with that of the Earth, resulting in the moon having an early atmosphere about twice as dense as the Martian atmosphere is today! This has wide implications for planetary science, but perhaps our favorite is that it may have snowed both carbon dioxide and water ice on the moon back in the day. George Curleigh has been president of Red Wing's heritage division since 2019, in which time he's been able to enjoy a list of very fun things including a worldwide pandemic, a factory shut-down, a cyber-attack, a periodically dwindling labor force, a broken supply chain for US-made components, and his OWN CHILDREN stealing his boots. So what's the general feeling in Red Wing, Minnesota, according to George? Actually pretty fantastic. Retail expansion is going hugely well, especially in Asia. The European and North American markets are showing a ton of strength. A new factory recently came online. And after a massive contraction, a flurry of new styles are being released, and old classics everyone wants revived. We get into all of that, plus why Red Wing buried a time capsule full of boots and manufacturing instructions to be dug up in 120 years, how that endeavor led to realizing Red Wing founder Charles Beckman survived a deadly shipwreck off Nova Scotia back in the 1900s, what it was like coming to old-school-as-it-comes Red Wing from Arc'teryx, one off the world's most technologically driven apparel companies, how to get people loving working in a boot factory, and why that aforementioned time when his son swiped his 875s was actually a hugely meaningful moment, in the best way. Some of the craziest wild animal attacks.Episode 218 ends spooky season with a bang and a scream. It all begins with a look at two iconic horror franchises that ultimately flopped on television. A Nightmare on Elm Street crossed into TV with Freddy's Nightmares, while Friday the 13th had a show of the same name. Though powerhouse films in the 1980s, the TV shows didn't fare as well. We'll look at both shows and some about why they did not succeed. Many horrific true crime stories spring to mind when thinking of the worst of the worst. For this segment, we are going to go deeper and look at some of the lesser-known but just as terrifying true crime cases of the 20th century. Some might be familiar, some new to you, but they are all equally disturbing. Animals can be cute and cuddly, but many are extremely dangerous. Wonder doesn't vanish—we just forget how to see it. In this conversation, master naturalist and author Eryn Lynum shows how kids can reboot ours: inviting us to become “collectors of sunrises,” to trade a single scrolling hour for sky, creek, and trail, and even to bring the wild indoors with bird feeders, houseplants, and the surprisingly magical fish tank. She explains why nature imprints our memories so intensely—through scent, sound, and touch—and how a simple ritual like a “quiet hike” helps families slow down enough to notice flickers' wingbeats, rabbits in the brush, and those blink-and-you-miss-it moments kids beg us to see. Time, it turns out, is the real terrain. Before the light bulb, people slept about eleven hours; today we try to stretch each day past its natural rhythm while children spend an estimated 22% of childhood on devices—roughly 205 waking weeks—compared to just 4.5 weeks outside. Eryn offers a hopeful reset: treat screens like invasive plants, remove a little each day, and let outdoor hours compound—because one hour outside makes the next one easier, richer, and more alive. Heed the invitations (“Come see this!”), lose track of the clock together, and watch your family's curiosity—and capacity for rest—grow. The cook and food writer Alison Roman frequently emanates and celebrates a certain spilled-milk imperfectionism. Her on-camera candor and laid-back cooking style have both contributed to growing her devoted audience of home cooks as well as the food-curious, many of whom have followed her and her singular recipes over the past decade-plus, from her prior media roles (Bon Appétit and The New York Times) to the independent-platform path she's now on. That's not to mention her three best-selling cookbooks, Dining In (2017), Nothing Fancy (2019), and Sweet Enough (2023), as well as her forthcoming fourth title, Something from Nothing, out Nov. 11. For Roman, there's joy and wisdom to be found in embracing a certain amount of honest-to-goodness mess, all while maturing into different versions of herself, in and out of the kitchen. On the episode, she reflects on the diaristic quality of her dishes, how time and money have shaped her cooking style and recipe-writing approach throughout her life, and the beauty of prioritizing tangible things in our ephemeral digital age.Special thanks to our Season 12 presenting sponsor, Van Cleef & Arpels.Alison Roman[4:49] Something From Nothing (2025)[5:52] Dining In (2017)[5:52] Sweet Enough (2023)[10:38] Nothing Fancy (2019)[16:06] First Bloom[22:03] The Tenth Muse by Judith Jones (2007)[22:03] Home Cooking by Laurie Colwin (1988)[22:03] Books by Anthony Bourdain[22:03] Blood, Bones & Butter by Gabrielle Hamilton (2011)[32:00] Chris Bernabeo[47:46] Solley's[56:24] Christina Tosi[57:22] Bon Appétit

Millions have been impacted by Charlie Peacock's Grammy Award-winning production and songwriting work. A smaller, but devoted group has been with him since his days as a Sacramento-based alternative pop artist and member of the progressive Exit Records scene. But very few have ever heard the work he did prior to his 1983 debut, Lie Down In The Grass, until now. On the heels of the release of his expansive and revealing memoir Roots and Rhythm, Peacock just dropped a never-before-heard collection of songs he recorded in 1980 and 81 with the legendary rock producer David Kahne (later named among the 500 most important Rock Producers by Rolling Stone for his work with Regina Spektor, The Bangles, Paul McCartney, Fishbone, Lana Del Rey, Springsteen, Tony Bennett, Stevie Nicks and others.) The Kahne Sessions reveals a young diamond in the rough, and on this special episode Charlie takes us back to those early days in his career and puts it all into context. And there is a LOT more where this comes from. This conversation, recorded in person in Charlie's home studio, covered everything from his earliest days as a musician, to the transformation sobriety and faith brought to his work, to concerns he has over the ways commodification, dehumanization, and artificial intelligence are impacting the way today's artists are engaging with the work. That will all be coming soon, but we wanted to get THIS part - celebrating the release of The Kahne Sessions out to you right away. Be sure to subscribe to the show on whichever platform you prefer so you don't miss a beat. And if you missed our very first episode - way back in 2019 - it featured none other than Charlie Peacock. You can find that show HERE. Mr. Beast Biography Flash a weekly Biography.YouTube's biggest star Jimmy Donaldson, better known as MrBeast, has been making headlines this week with concerns about artificial intelligence threatening the creator economy. On October 5th, he posted on X asking what AI-generated videos will do to YouTube and the millions of creators making content for a living, calling them scary times. His comments came right after OpenAI launched Sora 2, their new AI video generation tool that lets users create photorealistic clips with alarming ease.Instagram head Adam Mosseri addressed MrBeast's concerns at the Bloomberg Screentime conference this week, pushing back slightly while acknowledging that society will need to adjust to this new reality. Mosseri suggested that AI will actually give more people the ability to create content at scale, though he admitted bad actors will use the technology for nefarious purposes. This isn't MrBeast's first brush with AI controversy. Earlier this year he released an AI tool for generating YouTube thumbnails, but quickly pulled it after facing massive backlash from fans and fellow creators who demanded he hire human artists instead. He's since stopped using AI for thumbnails and started hiring human digital artists, though he never issued a formal apology. On a lighter note, MrBeast released a secret time capsule video on October 4th that he recorded ten years ago in 2015. In the clip, his teenage self asks whether he'd finally reached one million subscribers by now. Responding to his younger self, the now 444 million subscriber megastar said he'd never get tired of YouTube and that it runs in his veins. He revealed that back in high school, people told him no one cared about his YouTube obsession, which really hurt him at the time.Meanwhile, Amazon's Beast Games wrapped filming on its second season in late August, with MrBeast promising the show featuring a five million dollar prize is ten times better than the first season.Thank you so much for listening to Biography Flash.
