In my senior year of high school, I came to the US as a cultural exchange student through a Rotary Club. As a part of this one year exchange program, I stayed with a family in Arizona and attended the local high school. Because I was an exchange student, I was offered a place in the Student Council at my school, a position that other students had to be elected for. But I declined the offer and chose to take a Physics class instead. I hid behind the excuse that I needed the science class credits for college (after three years of high school in India, I probably had enough science credits for a lifetime). But the truth was that I was scared that I would make a fool of myself. So instead of exploring this unique opportunity and living the American high school experience to its fullest, I chose to hide behind books. It was still a fantastic year full of many new experiences - I ate a taco for the first time, I sold Girl Scout cookies, and I spent six weeks traveling around the US by train. But I don’t have many memories from the school. And I still wish I had found the courage to say “yes”. I would have made many more friends and memories. In this episode, Catherine reminisces about an experience from the earlier part of her career when she said no to an opportunity because of self doubt. This experience taught her an important lesson, and even today motivates her to override her self-doubt and say yes to opportunities.Catherine Madden is a co-founder of UXDX, a global conference and community that helps tech team's shift from projects to product teams. “Creativity is not stopping at the 1st or 2nd or 3rd iteration. Let's create a ton of spaghetti and throw it at the wall—eventually something will stick.” Cole talks with illustrator, designer, and facilitator, Catherine Madden, about the power of drawing to think, define, generate ideas, collaborate, and ensure all voices are heard. Catherine shares tactics that get everyone sketching, from doodle birds to Sh*tty First Draft Parties, and discusses why pencils are on her forbidden materials list. They also chat about the value of the shared display, plus more pragmatic tips and tools for effectively facilitating in a virtual setting. Catherine Madden is a the founder of Relay — which is a design studio based in San Francisco that specializes in helping clients visualize and communicate data. Her approach is super exploratory and involves a LOT of doodling, but it is based on a foundation of experience in design thinking, data visualization consulting, and visual facilitation. She does strategic storytelling, graphic recording for private clients, as well as classes and teaches for students wanting to develop their visual skills. About The Type A Creative Podcast: The Type A Creative is for those of us who feel like walking juxtapositions. You know who you are. You can balance spreadsheets just as easily as you can design a logo. Sometimes it’s a little disorienting because you’re a left-brain / right-brain blend that doesn’t always fit into the labels of “artist” or “numbers person.” On the show we bring in fellow bosses, painters, creative directors, film makers, entrepreneurs, and writers — together we’re having conversations about what it is to be both Type A and Creative. Don’t forget to rate & review The Type A Creative on iTunes, join the Facebook group & follow Jenni on Instagram!
