This week's EYE ON NPI is super phat not unlike a pair of ultra wide JNCOs (https://jnco.com/collections/womens-1/products/the-camilla-jeans-27-vintage-houndstooth) it's the Laird Sera NX040 Ultra-Wide Band and Bluetooth Combo Module (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/l/laird-embedded-wireless-solutions/sera-nx040-ultra-wide-band-and-bluetooth-combo-module), a compact solution that combines the best of NXP UWB and Nordic BTLE into a single easy-to-use module that is ready for instant integration into your location-based identification products or projects. We often get folks asking how they can do indoor location projects: where an object is tracked in a 2D or 3D space, with high precision. For outdoor projects, most people use GPS/GNSS (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Satellite_navigation) which can give 10 meter accuracy anywhere in the world. Or, sometimes people use cell tower triangulation (https://blues.com/blog/use-cell-tower-and-wi-fi-triangulation-to-achieve-pin-point-locations-without-gps/) to give rough estimates of location world-wide. However, both of these require you to be outside, with either network connectivity or a GNSS fix - and like we mentioned, you can't get better than 10 meter accuracy without very expensive RTK modules (https://blog.adafruit.com/?s=eye+on+npi+rtk). Indoors, sometimes its possible to use WiFi time-of-flight, or BTLE ToF / AoA (https://blog.adafruit.com/2021/08/19/eye-on-npi-xplr-aoa-direction-finding-and-indoor-positioning-explorer-kit-eyeonnpi-digikey-ublox-digikey-adafruit/) More interesting, we can also use multiple stationary transmitters to determine the 3D location of a mobile device. Instead of looking for one pulse, we encode the transmitter ID into the pulses, and then can correlate each received pulse to the fixed 3D location of the station. As long as we have 4 stations, we can solve for XYZ and yes that's a lot of stations but you can get 10cm accuracy, which blows away BTLE and WiFi RSSI or ToF methods. Note that doing the triangulation on UWB pings requires a ton of math which is why having a ready-to-go module is great because NXP and Laird will provide example code to get you started. While most folks think of UWB as a 3D locator, NXP promotes some other use cases - most notably peer-to-peer payments (https://www.nxp.com/company/about-nxp/nxp-collaborates-with-ing-and-samsung-to-pilot-industrys-first-uwb-based-peer-to-peer-payment-application:NW-NXP-COLLABORATES-WITH-ING-AND-SAMSUNG-TO) and keyless car access. The key-less entry proffer is the most timely as there's been a spate of car theft rings that use relay attacks to amplify the signal from a key fob (https://www.nytimes.com/2015/04/16/style/keeping-your-car-safe-from-electronic-thieves.html) if the car is parked close to the house and the keys are kept near the door. Thanks to UWB now being included in iPhones and in the iOS API,you can likely have customers use their iPhones to directly interact with the Sera NX040. To save you time and integration costs, the Sera NX040 (https://www.digikey.com/short/hmzt8whq) include the NXP UWB chipset and all supporting circuitry, plus a Nordic nRF52833 (https://www.digikey.com/short/jj9r27p2) which is a Cortex M4 with all the peripherals, plus the best Bluetooth LE radio on the market. Nordic's chips are especially good at low-power use-cases so battery-powered designs will benefit from this combo. The NXP SR040 is wired to the nRF via SPI - you'll use the NXP SDK for that, which you need to contact NXP for. Or you can use the Laird MicroPython build which comes with some ready-to-go examples. The Seras are available with either built in tuned antenna (https://www.digikey.com/short/hmzt8whq) or a external antenna connection - you'll need to pick up a NanoUWB antenna (https://www.digikey.com/short/1wq0t5r0) to match (https://www.digikey.com/short/ctw5m4t8). As you can expect for a device with two wireless components, proper layout is essential to get good performance from both the BLE side and the UWB side - check the Laird documentation on how to set up keep-outs and ground planes. Finally, if you want to get started you can always pick up the NX040 Eval Board (https://www.digikey.com/short/hhtqhwc9) which has SWD debug for programming the nRF, USB connection for MicroPython or Zephyr debugging, and a separate RP2040+MikroBus+Qwiic half that can be used for adding sensors or displays. Whew, this NPI was not just ultra-wide but ultra-long: we learned a lot while researching the Sera NX040 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KWf9fcx26wg) and the modern uses of UWB! If you want to get in on this multi-purpose RF protocol, you're in luck because DigiKey has the Laird Sera NX040 UWB+BTLE Module (https://www.digikey.com/short/hmzt8whq) and accessories in stock right now for immediate shipment. Order today and they'll send you parts faster than an UWB pulse so you can get started with integration in nanoseconds.

EYE on NPI - Analog Devices Inc MAXREFDES178 and MAX78000

Adafruit Industries

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 18, 2024 9:36

This week's EYE ON NPI is a cool cubic camera - it's the Analog Devices Inc. (nee Maxim Integrated) MAXREFDES178 (https://www.digikey.com/short/t4052tpj), an all-in-one vision eval board for the MAX78000 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/analog-devices-inc-maxim-integrated/MAX78000EXG/13155097). The MAX78000 is a specifically customized ARM Cortex M4 microcontroller that has a Convolution Neural Network sub-circuit. This means that it's really good at doing the kind of mathematical calculations required to do vision or audio-based machine learning inferences without the need for a heavy-duty processor like in a Single Board Computer or Internet co-processing. This makes it great for stand-alone smart camera applications - which is why the MAXREFDES178 (https://www.digikey.com/short/t4052tpj) is an excellent eval board that might even be able to be integrated in your final design. The MAXREFDES178 camera kit (https://www.digikey.com/short/t4052tpj) comes as a small hackable cube with two MAX78000s - one for video and one for audio processing. A 1.5" 240x240 resolution TFT with capacitive touchscreen, OVM7692 camera module (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/omnivision-technologies-inc/OVM7692-RAAA/3190565), I2S Codec, I2S microphone, 5 buttons, Lipoly Battery, USB Type C with battery charging, and microSD card slot that can be used to load 'Apps' onto the processors. There's also a cute SWD programmer dongle that plugs into the USB so you can do full programming and step debugging of your own application. The strength of the MAXREFDES is that it demonstrates the audio and video inferencing that normally would take a Raspberry Pi-like SBC computer or an online connection for the heavy computation. But, since it's done on-chip, the power draw is much much less and the startup time is nearly instant. This makes it great for portable, battery, or even solar / power-harvesting applications (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TvuLv13EGlM) As with most AI products, the biggest challenge for starting out is how to train the model that will be used for inferencing. The MAXREFDES178 comes with a basic voice-detection model that covers about 20 words, or about 10 celebrity faces. However, unless you happen to be designing a paparazzi product you'll need to create the model that detects exactly what you want and then load that into the MAX78000's CNN memory. Analog Devices has a video series (https://www.analog.com/en/education/education-library/videos/video-series/understanding-artificial-intelligence.html) and GitHub documentation repo (https://github.com/MaximIntegratedAI/MaximAI_Documentation) that goes through the process of how to do the training: you can use the popular PyTorch or TensorFlow Lite environments. Note that since the CNN is in hardware, not 'bitbanged' on the main core, you do not have to use TF Lite for Microcontrollers (https://www.tensorflow.org/lite/microcontrollers) - although you could probably run the TFLiteMicro codebase if you wanted, on the MAX78000, it just wouldn't get any hardware acceleration. Creating the model will require collecting a ton of data, image or voice, and then training using a CUDA-powered desktop or cloud computer. If you're interested in edge AI development (https://www.analog.com/en/thought-leadership/the-dream-of-edge-ai.html), the MAX78000 is an excellent chip to use with a familiar ARM M4 core and tons of peripherals to support any external sensors or devices needed - no co-processor needed! There's even a Feather board available (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/analog-devices-inc-maxim-integrated/MAX78000FTHR/13549063), but for quick audio/video development, the MAXREFDES178 camera kit (https://www.digikey.com/short/t4052tpj) works right out of the box and it's in stock right now at DigiKey for immediate shipment! Order today and it'll ship immediately so you'll be convolving and neuralling by tomorrow afternoon. See more in the video here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Toaz-0vdIE

EYE on NPI - Microchip's MPLAB PICkit 5 in-circuit debugger

Adafruit Industries

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 4, 2024 10:33

This week's EYE ON NPI is the 'top' pick for the 'top' of the year: our first NPI choice of 2024 is Microchip's MPLAB PICkit 5 in-circuit debugger! (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/m/microchip-technology/mplab-pickit-5-in-circuit-debugger) This is the latest all-in-one toolkit for programming and debugging any chip available from Microchip, and believe us when we say there's a lot of chips available with different program/debug systems that need supporting! MCP purchased Atmel in 2016 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atmel#Acquisition_by_Microchip_Technology) and since then has been slowly integrating Atmel chips such as AVR/SAM/ATtiny/ATmega into the MCP toolchains and workflows. For that reason, the PICkit is powered by a advanced 300MHz ATSAME70 chip, which provides ICSP, MIPS EJTAG, SWD, AVR JTAG, AVR UPDI & PDI, AVR ISP, TPI and debugWire. To do that, there's an 8-pin 0.1" socket connector on the end, you're expected to select the right grouping of pins for whatever chip you're targeting. You can make a custom wire harness, but we think you might be best off also picking up the AC102015 Adapter Kit (https://www.digikey.com/short/tr3bhf52) which comes with every popular cable adapter. OK since we are talking about a PICkit, it's not surprising that all of the PIC microcontrollers are supported - these use an "ICSP" programming method (https://ww1.microchip.com/downloads/en/DeviceDoc/30277d.pdf) with power, ground, two data pins and a VPP high-voltage line for FLASH reprogramming. We still use this interface to program chips like the PIC12 on the pixie 3W LED driver (https://www.adafruit.com/product/2741) This interface is ancient and will program basically every PIC12, PIC16 and beyond - Microchip was thankfully very consistent on this interface. Of course, you probably are also using Cortex-based chips: these use JTAG and SWD (https://developer.arm.com/documentation/101636/latest/Debug-and-Trace/JTAG-SWD-Interface). Those are also supported! Since this is a programmer plug debugger, you can also connect SWO for trace. The same JTAG/SWD interface is used for programming and debug. Supporting AVRs is also included, and for less than the price of the ATMEL ICE (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/microchip-technology/ATATMEL-ICE-BASIC/4753381) you get all the same chips supported. Aaaand there's a lot more required to support the whole AVR family. For example, many small older ATtiny chips, you'll be using TPI (https://ww1.microchip.com/downloads/en/Appnotes/doc8373.pdf) because you only have a couple pins available. On newer ATtiny chips (and maybe even ATmegas) the async-uart-single-wire UPDI interface (https://onlinedocs.microchip.com/pr/GUID-DDB0017E-84E3-4E77-AAE9-7AC4290E5E8B-en-US-4/index.html?GUID-9B349315-2842-4189-B88C-49F4E1055D7F) is becoming more popular, that's available with an optional high-voltage mode which would let you use the UPDI pin as a reset pin as well. Standard ISP is supported for programming those Arduino compatibles you've got in a drawer, and there's also debugWire support! This was a one-wire debugging interface for AVRs that we never got to try out, so maybe now I will be able to! Don't forget you'll want that AC102105 Adapter Kit (https://www.digikey.com/short/tr3bhf52) to make wiring to various dev boards easier. The most interesting new features that we haven't seen on other programmers is the 'Programmer To Go' field-reprogramming capability which allows burning full programming configuration files off of a micro SD card to any target, it can even be powered from the target if needed! Use MPLAB X to create the file that contains all the fuses and data to be transferred. Save to any FAT32 formatted uSD card, then on site you can press the button to re-program the device. The indicator LED strip will give some visual feedback so you know what it's up to. If you want more control over the setup, use the iOS or Android app to pair over Bluetooth, then select which file and also get error reports in readable text. For any development needs you've got with PIC or AVR or SAM chips, the Microchip MPLAB PICkit 5 in-circuit debugger (https://www.digikey.com/short/fznt5mnh) is going to be the best and most-supported tool - being an official Microchip product means you don't have to worry about future chip support or historic chip maintenance. And best of all it is in stock right now at DigiKey for under $100.(https://www.digikey.com/short/fznt5mnh) Add one to your cart and it will ship immediately so you can be PIC'ing, debugWire'ing and UPDI'ing by tomorrow afternoon.

Those connectors are standard issues for programming Arm Cortex chips with SWD or other devices with JTAG. However, sometimes you don't need or want the bulk of a chonky IDC connector - and only some customers will need to field reprogram or debug. But just having pogo pads is more accessible to connect to if you have the specific jig. We'll cover two solutions for 'press fit' programming: Tag Connect standard https://www.tag-connect.com/ and another exciting option we spotted on Twitter, now called X, from arturo182 and abhinav_937 https://twitter.com/arturo182/status/1701760589419208995 , is using a SKEDD REDFIT cable. https://www.digikey.com/short/t1hhf3qj See the chosen part on DigiKey https://www.digikey.com/short/327pnnbw Visit the Adafruit shop online - http://www.adafruit.com ----------------------------------------- LIVE CHAT IS HERE! http://adafru.it/discord Subscribe to Adafruit on YouTube: http://adafru.it/subscribe New tutorials on the Adafruit Learning System: http://learn.adafruit.com/ ----------------------------------------- #adafruit #deskofladyada #thegreatsearch #digikey #hardwarehacking #prototyping #usbhost #tinyusb #featherwing #chatgpt4 #debouncing #swdsockets #tagconnect #skeddredfit

On our latest ESP32-S3 board, we added a JTAG connector, as we do on many Adafruit Metro microcontroller boards. This is a 'standard' port for SWD or JTAG that is smaller than the common 2x10 connector. This size is common to many debuggers like the Atmel ICE (https://blog.adafruit.com/2022/07/01/the-great-search-programmer-debugger-for-atsamd21-chips-adafruit-digikey-microchipmakes/) or J-Link (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/segger-microcontroller-systems/8-08-00/2175882). EYE on NPI: Arduino Uno R4 Minima and Uno R4 WiFi Boards

Adafruit Industries

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 27, 2023 17:40

This week's EYE ON NPI is a new spin on an old familiar classic, it's Arduino's UNO R4 Minima and R4 WiFi Boards (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/a/arduino/uno-r4-minima-and-r4-wifi-boards) now in stock at DigiKey for folks who want a 5V microcontroller board with classic UNO-compatibility but a ton more speed, flash and RAM! The UNO R4 comes in two flavors, the Minima (https://www.digikey.com/short/r70jbj93) is low cost, only $20, whereas the UNO R4 WiFi (https://www.digikey.com/short/qj072pnm) is $27.50 and adds WiFi and BLE via an ESP32-S3 plus a cute monochrome LED grid for scrolling messages or displaying status icons. This pair of dev boards look just like those classic Arduino boards you probably learned to code and hack on, they've been around for almost 20 years, the first board looked very similar, but had a RS232 serial port instead of USB, and all through-hole components (https://blog.arduino.cc/2021/12/09/one-board-to-rule-them-all-history-of-the-arduino-uno/). Through various iterations and improvements, the original board was redesigned to add USB and update to the ATmega168 with the Diecimila (https://docs.arduino.cc/retired/boards/arduino-diecimila) and then the ATmega328 plus auto-power-switching Duemilanove (https://docs.arduino.cc/retired/boards/arduino-duemilanove) in 2009. In 2010 the most popular Arduino to date was released, the UNO, which updated the USB port to use an ATmega16u2 and through various small revisions added the IOref pin to allow 3V power/logic and separate I2C pins since A4/A5 were no longer always connected to a TWI peripheral. Since about 2012, which was the release date of the UNO R3, not a lot has happened with that particular configuration/shape. Arduino the company has released a ton more boards but in different form factors, all available at DigiKey: Nano, Due, MKR, Portenta etc. (https://www.digikey.com/en/supplier-centers/arduino) and you should definitely check them out! But it's also a big deal when the main workhorse of the family gets a respin. Particularly since the new R4 takes a very different direction than the previous UNOs: instead of just upgrading the atmegaxx8 chipset, Arduino has gone with the totally different ARM Cortex-based RA4M series which we've covered on a previous EYE ON NPI (https://blog.adafruit.com/2023/05/25/eye-on-npi-renesas-ra4m1-microcontroller-series-eyeonnpi-digikey-renesasglobal-digikey-adafruit/) In that video we covered a lot about the chip itself so check it out if you're interested in the specifics of that chip family. The chip itself is a similar family to the ARM Cortex M0-based SAMD21 'Arduino Zero' (https://store-usa.arduino.cc/products/arduino-zero?selectedStore=us) but thanks to the Renesas version of this core, we now get the 5V-run RA4M. From Arduino's description, here are some of the updates: - Hardware compatibility with UNO form factor: The UNO R4 Minima maintains the same form factor, pinout, and 5 V operating voltage as its predecessor, the UNO R3. This ensures a seamless transition for existing shields and projects, leveraging the extensive and unique ecosystem already established for the Arduino UNO. - Expanded memory and faster clock: Prepare for more precise calculations and the ability to handle complex projects with ease. The UNO R4 Minima boasts increased memory and a faster clock speed, empowering you to tackle demanding tasks effortlessly. - Extra on-board peripherals: The UNO R4 Minima introduces a range of on-board peripherals, including a 12-bit DAC, CAN BUS, and OP AMP. These additional components provide you with expanded capabilities and flexibility in your designs. - Extended 24 V tolerance: The UNO R4 Minima now supports a wider input voltage range, allowing power supplies up to 24 V. This enables seamless integration with motors, LED strips, and other actuators, simplifying your projects by utilizing a single power source. - SWD connector: Debugging is a critical aspect of any project. Simply connect an external debugger to the UNO R4 Minima and effortlessly monitor the inner workings of your system. Stay in control and gain valuable insights. - HID support: The UNO R4 Minima comes with built-in HID (Human Interface Device) support, enabling it to simulate a mouse or keyboard when connected to a computer via a USB cable. This convenient feature makes it a breeze to send keystrokes and mouse movements to a computer, enhancing usability and functionality. At $20 a piece, these new Arduino UNO R4s (https://www.digikey.com/short/qj072pnm) are a great price for the high quality you get from Arduino - and there's lots of them in stock at DigiKey for immediate shipment! Grab both the UNO R4 Minima (https://www.digikey.com/short/r70jbj93) and UNO R4 WiFi (https://www.digikey.com/short/qj072pnm), and they'll ship immediately so you can get started moving your 8-bit micro projects to Cortex-M4 by tomorrow afternoon

Why don't we use triangles in charts more often? Can design considerations come before we have the data? Do we take data visualization too seriously? Author, speaker, and data literacy advocate Neil Richards raises (and occasionally answers) these and other questions in his new book, Questions in Dataviz: a Data-Driven Process for Data Visualization. In this episode, Neil stops by the podcast to talk about the value of creativity, personal passion projects, experimentation in data visualization, and whether dataviz can change the world.  related links: Follow Neil: Twitter | Website | Tableau Public (portfolio) Book: Questions in Dataviz Podcast: Alli Torban's Dataviz Today  Project: Makeover Monday SWD challenge: https://community.storytellingwithdata.com/challenges Project: Viz for Social Good Project: Andy Kirk's The Seinfeld Chronicles  Viz: US county hexmap Viz: Pet ownership in the UK Project: Data Visualization Society Project: Information is Beautiful Awards Get sample content & order storytelling with you: storytellingwithyou.com University instructor resources: storytelling with data.com/university SWD YouTube channel: storytellingwithdata.com/youtube

This week we're looking to redesign our fancy 'tester brains' that we use for many of our microcontroller boards. We have three flavors of testers, the 'drop and beep' simple ones that use an Arduino / Metro as a base and do basic testing of some I2C sensor, the ones that use a Teensy 3.6 to SWD or ISP program a chip and then do a USB enumeration check, and finally the Raspi ones. We've got plenty of metros, and our stash of Raspi 3's is going fine but we've just about run out of Teensy 3.6's! Since we have a lot of microcontroller boards coming soon we wanted to make sure that we could revise this tester to use an RP2040 - it's definitely fast enough and has enough pins, but we needed to have a bitbang USB host implementation in order to test enumeration and/or communicate over CDC/HID/MSD with TinyUSB. Let's look at what we came up with. The Great Search - SMD USB Type A Host Connector https://www.digikey.com/short/q5208wrn As we're redoing one of our testers to work around a part shortage, we're also trying to SMD-ify the whole thing since we use enough of these its worth it for us to make a short run of maybe 50 boards instead of hand soldering. This tester does a USB enumeration check and so we want a USB Type A connector for the USB host. We've always used the classic THM version of the USB Type A, let's see what's available for SMT at Digi-Key! As anyone who has ever participated in a fantasy league can tell you, the most fun part of the whole experience is drafting your team. We took that idea to heart, and imagined, “What if, instead of drafting professional athletes, we did a fantasy draft of chart and graph types?” The data storytellers at SWD and premium members of our online community recently did just that, taking part in a (mostly!) friendly competition to build themselves the strongest possible roster of methods for visualizing information. What chart type was chosen first overall? Did anybody pick pie charts? And, who do YOU think wound up with the best team? How can we use beauty to convey meaning, and form to guide function, in our communications? In this episode of the SWD podcast, Dr. Vidya Setlur and Bridget Cogley explore these questions with data storyteller Mike Cisneros. In their upcoming book Functional Aesthetics for Data Visualization, Vidya (the “academic”) and Bridget (the “practitioner”) explore the relationships among what we see, how we encode information, and what we mean. You'll hear about the “bento box” model of organizing our information; how text, tone, register, and language affects our visualizations; how our relationship to food can inform what makes a communication effective; and how to go beyond “it depends” when considering the answers to challenging questions.  related links: Follow Vidya: Twitter (@vsetlur) | LinkedIn  | Tableau Research Follow Bridget: Twitter (@WindsCogley) | LinkedIn | TableauFit blog Book: Functional Aesthetics for Data Visualization Article: Honoring Kelly Martin, including the “Birdstrike Redoux” visualization Article: The Ishango bone, an early mathematical tool Paper: “The medium is the message” by Marshall McLuhan Article: “Light vision” by Margaret Livingstone (regarding isoluminance in Monet) Book: Mind in Motion by Barbara Tversky
