How to Enjoy the Bible - Dave Garrett

Special Message: "How to Enjoy the Bible" is a recording from a Sunday School class my dad, Dave Garrett, taught at First Baptist Church of Newbury Park in 1981. Be sure to subscribe and get notified when new episodes are available. Subscribe and leave a comment. I'd love to hear from you! Get resources along with this episode here. Read "Rediscovering Dad" I found several recordings of messages and recovered them from the original cassettes to digital files in 2024 - interestingly, I was in the middle of teaching a series called "How to Study the Bible" when I recovered his messages! I wish I had all of his messages, but unfortunately, I only have a dozen. I will continue to recover and make his messages available and share them here on my podcast as a special series as well as on my website where you'll also be able to read the transcripts and get other resources. I know you'll be blessed by his teaching because he was faithful to "rightly divide the Word of Truth" and I know you'll enjoy his humor and thoughtfulness as well. This message explores how to enjoy the Bible by studying it inductively, rightly dividing the word of truth, and understanding its context. He emphasizes avoiding legalism and correctly interpreting scripture based on literary form, subject matter, times, and dispensations. A perfect word for us today as it was in 1981! Listen to the Dwelling Richly podcast on YouTube, Apple, Spotify - your favorite app! Sharing, liking, commenting is a free and easy way for you to help me grow this ministry. I don't charge for any content, don't use any ads - so any organic interactions are really helpful. Thank you! Transcript Available on my website Dwelling in the Word and letting the Word dwell in us richly is different than reading the Bible or reading a devotional with Bible passages. Let the Word of Christ dwell in you richly and return the favor by dwelling in the Word - not "doing" Bible study, not simply reading - but moving into the Word with heart, soul, mind, and strength. It's being intentional in making a shift from treating the Word of God like a self-help book to letting it dwell in us as the living Word of God that it is. This series with my Dad will include any of the teachings of his I am able to find, transfer, and make available Mondays August through October of 2024. It's important to know this: the greatest heritage we can leave our children is a love for and faith in God. My parents both did that. As I've listened to his messages I am reminded just how profoundly he influenced my own teaching to this day. The very fact that the focus of my blog is "Dwelling Richly" is directly because of the love my parents both had for God's Word and the way the passed along that love to me and my sisters. Questions about the Bible? I'm working on a new series! "So Glad You Asked" which will take your questions about the Bible, living the Christian life, dealing with difficult situations/people/life issues, ...really anything on your mind and I'll share my thoughts and responses. I'd love to hear from you. As November is Family Court Awareness Month which closely follows on the heels of Domestic Violence Awareness month in October, Susan Guthrie, Esq. brings you a special Bonus Episode where the two topics are joined.  Susan chats again with Investigative Journalist and Coach, Amy Polacko to shine a light on what the laws do and do not do to protect victims of intimate partner violence and coercive control, what has been done and what more needs to be done. Amy Polacko recently wrote a revealing article for Ms. Magazine entitled, "Empowered: Women Tell Family Court Judges of Experiences With Coercive Control Using New Domestic Abuse Law" that received a great deal of attention from women and survivors of domestic abuse.  As outlined in the article, one year ago, Connecticut enacted Jennifers' Law, which added coercive control to the definition of domestic violence for those seeking relief, becoming one of only 5 states to pass such protections.  Amy's article looks at how the law has impacted domestic violence victims since the passing of the law, highlighting the benefits but also the many shortcomings and difficulties in applying the law in a court of law.   In this episode, Amy shares her insights from speaking directly with the women who have been in the legal trenches, those who continue to struggle with litigation abuse and some tips for managing if you find yourself in this dangerous situation.  This is incredibly important information for everyone to hear as domestic violence rips  About this week's special guest: Amy Polacko Amy Polacko is a Freedom Warrior - and is committed to helping women live life on their own terms during/after a toxic relationship or divorce. As a divorced single mom, she is passionate about coaching women one-on-one and founded the empowerment group Strong Savvy Women to provide support, inspiration, and guidance to single women. Amy is also an award-winning journalist who sheds light on women's issues including divorce, domestic abuse, coercive control, and singlehood.  Her recent journalistic work has appeared in The Washington Post, Newsweek, NBC News THINK, and Ms. Magazine. After graduating from Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism, Amy worked as a newspaper reporter for Newsday and was part of the Pulitzer Prize-winning team covering the TWA Flight 800 crash. She then transitioned to television journalism, working as a writer and producer in New York City. Amy was an award-winning on-air reporter in Fargo, ND, where she traveled to Kosovo for a series on the North Dakota National Guard, and in Philadelphia, where she covered the national D.C. Sniper story. She also headed up an investigative reporting unit in Albany, NY, where she uncovered consumer scams, crime, and government corruption as part of her I-Team Investigations -- one of which exposed a loophole in the state's sex offender registry.  Amy has spoken publicly on women's issues, empowerment and entrepreneurship at Yale University, the Women's Forum in Ridgefield, CT, the Women's Center of Greater Danbury, CT, the Hayvn co-working space for women, the Believe Inspire Grow national empowerment organization for women, and many other groups both virtually and in person.  Website:  www.freedomwarrior.info  Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/freedomwarriortribe/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/freedomwarriortribe/ Also mentioned in this episode: Dr. Christine Cocchiola's Episodes: Domestic Abuse Part One:  Understanding Coercive Control with Dr. Christine Cocchiola on Divorce & Beyond #237 Domestic Abuse Part Two: Turning the Focus to Post-Separation Abuse with Dr. Christine Cocchiola on Divorce & Beyond #238 Tina Swithin Episodes: How One Mom‘s Battle is Changing the Face of High Conflict Divorce with Tina Swithin on Divorce & Beyond #206 The Incredible Tale of One Mom's Successful 10-Year Battle to Be Free of a Narcissist with Tina Swithin on Divorce & Beyond #257 Get Tina's Book:  Divorcing a Narcissist: One Mom's Battle CT Protective Moms: https://www.connecticutprotectivemoms.org/ Tindler Swindler Bad Vegan Maid   If you want to see the video version of the podcast episodes they are available on The Divorce & Beyond YouTube Channel!  Make sure to LIKE and SUBSCRIBE so you don't miss a single episode!   TRANSCRIPT AVAILABLE: https://web.descript.com/4d38014b-c9a7-4cd4-9ec1-a20f6df22785  ******************************************************************* MEET OUR CREATOR AND HOST: SUSAN GUTHRIE®, ESQ., the creator and host of The Divorce and Beyond® Podcast, is nationally recognized as one of the top family law and divorce mediation attorneys in the country.  Susan is a member of the Executive Council of the American Bar Association Section of Dispute Resolution and is the Founder of Divorce in a Better Way® which provides a curated selection of resources and information for those facing divorce and other life changes.  Internationally renowned as one of the leading experts in online mediation, Susan created her Learn to Mediate Online® program and has trained more than 18,000 professionals in how to transition their practice online.  Susan recently partnered with legal and mediation legend, Forrest "Woody" Mosten to create the Mosten Guthrie Academy which provides gold standard, fully online training for mediation and collaborative professionals at all stages of their career.   Follow Susan Guthrie and THE DIVORCE AND BEYOND PODCAST on social media for updates and inside tips and information: Susan Guthrie on Facebook @susanguthrieesq Susan on Instagram @susanguthrieesq Susan on Twitter @guthrielaw ********************************************************************* SPONSORSHIP OPPORTUNITIES ARE AVAILABLE! Embracing Intensity

Building Self-Advocacy This week on Embracing Intensity, we share our talk with Dr. Matt Zakreski on self-advocacy skills. Self-advocacy is an important skill that can help you take charge of your own life and move toward greater freedom, fulfillment, and happiness. In this episode, we'll explore the concept of self-advocacy and how it can help us feel more empowered in our own daily life. The goal of self-advocacy is to actively advocate on your own behalf to get your needs met. To be a strong self-advocate, you have to have a clear understanding of your own needs. This is important because it will determine your goals and how you will achieve them. If you have a goal in mind, you need to have a plan to get there.  The first step to positive change is to know what you are good at and what you are not good at. Explore how you can use your strengths to your advantage, and use your weaknesses as opportunities for growth.  When you're trying to make a change, bringing in allies is powerful because it can give you insight into the world that you don't have. They can help you see things that you wouldn't have thought about. Gifted and neurodivergent folks often feel like they have to go it alone in their adult life. Self advocates use their support system such as colleagues, service providers, family members, or peer support. They aren't afraid to ask for help! Setting the Stage! It is very important to set the stage and prepare yourself for the conversation ahead of time so that you can be as successful as possible. The best way to do that is to set aside time to prepare and to have all of your notes and your ideas and your facts ready. This way you will be able to focus and be more effective during the conversation. Also, consider doing it at a time and in a place where you can expect to have success. Set up a good place and time to talk about your needs, but give enough context of what you'd like to discuss so the other person doesn't assume the worst.  Before we start with self-advocacy, we also need to consider the person we are advocating to and understand that their strengths and challenges might not be the same as ours. We need to be specific and tangible and help them take ownership and buy into the solution. By taking on a leadership role in the conversation we can help guide its direction. In order to give yourself the best chance possible to succeed, you have to be prepared to be flexible and let go of rigid expectations. If you are getting resistance from your boss or others, it's a good idea to ask yourself, what do I need to do to get to the thing I want? Let them play a meaningful role in shaping what you need to do next. What new things can you try to improve the lives of people you're working with? What employment opportunities might forward your career? Supporting Long Term Success It is also helpful to consider the benefits to everyone and make it a win-win. Explore how you both get the most out of the situation, help build and strengthen relationships and improve the lives of others. Getting what you want in the moment may not pay off in the long run if it means burning a bridge. Communicating clearly and assertively can help get our own needs met without compromising the needs of others. It's important to be specific with your plan for following up or life might get in the way. Self-Advocacy is a lifelong process of constantly setting and re-setting boundaries. This process helps you to move forward in a positive way, towards being more successful as a self-advocate. Join us to learn more about self-advocacy with Dr. Matt! In this episode Good self-advocates get super clear on what they need. Tips for playing to your strengths, using your weaknesses as opportunities for growth, and taking steps to overcome them. Exploring your resources, connecting with allies, and recognizing the kind of help that's available. The importance of timing and coming prepared to set yourself up for success. Setting clear goals to improve our own lives and the lives of others. Developing meta-communication and self-determination skills. How flexibility can help us get what we need in the long run. Meeting in the middle to set up a win-win solution. Getting buy-in and setting everyone up for success. Communicating assertively instead of passively or aggressively. The importance of specific, tangible, and direct communication. Setting a clear plan to follow up for success. Back in May (ep. 117), we had Bloomberg Law's Molly Huie on the show to talk about the Bloomberg Law DEI Framework survey she and her team created and were pushing law firms to contribute. So we close the loop on this conversation by asking Molly to come back and talk about the results of the survey. There were over 30 firms who participated in the survey with 28 of those firms making "the cut" to be included in the 2021 DEI Framework results. Molly walks us through why these firms jumped onboard this inaugural survey, what issues they may have had in collecting and answering the over 90 questions in the survey, and what reactions they had to the results of the survey. The survey results are free to download from Bloomberg Law's DEI Framework page, and the 2022 edition of the survey will be out in the first quarter of next year for any firms who want to see if they make the cut for inclusion in the DEI Framework. Teaching Law Students Business Design Skills - Jessica Erickson and Josh Kubicki

Richmond Law School professors Jessica Erickson and Josh Kubicki join us to discuss how they are teaching law students not only the critical skills to "think like a lawyer" but also the understanding that they are entering the world of business. Whether that is in BigLaw, non-profit, in-house, public interest, or solo practice, they need to have a baseline of business acumen to practice and thrive. Prof. Kubicki runs Richmond's Legal Business Design Hub that delivers leading-edge competitive skills to the law students and is part of a one-two punch created by Richmond Law Dean Wendy Perdue who also hired Prof. Janice Craft to lead the Professional Identity Formation program which focuses on interpersonal skills needed to be a successful, yet healthy legal professional. Prof. Erickson runs the Law and Business Forum which connects Richmond Law Students with the local business community and teaches students a better understanding of what it means to be a business lawyer. Information Inspiration Our inspiration this week comes from someone who we met (virtually) at the HBR LINKS conference. This fellow legal information professional mentioned that he's listened to all 133 (now hopefully 134) episodes. That is amazing! You inspire us!! Ian Nelson, Sarah Glassmeyer, and Margaret Naughton on the Next Generation of CLE

As we move toward the end of the year, or as in Texas, the end of a lawyer's birthday month, there becomes a mad scramble for completing Continuing Legal Education (CLE) courses. Has CLE become more about checking the box than about enhancing/maintaining a lawyer's skill? Why is it that CLE credits are based on time, rather than knowledge? Is there a better way? Our guests this week certainly think so. Ian Nelson, co-founder of Hotshot, a company whose business model is based on short instructional videos, originally without CLE… is now offering CLE credit with some of their packaged videos. This is a crack in the foundation of the traditional CLE model, and one that Sarah Glassmeyer, Legal Tech Curator · Reynen Court Inc. and Margaret Naughton, CLE Manager · McDermott Will & Emery hope continues. Margaret did point out that not all CLE is boring, especially if you can kayak and learn. Join us for a roundtable discussion on the potential for the next generation of CLE where the focus is more on true education, learning, and skills. Perhaps we can look outside the United States at places like the UK, Canada, Australia, and others where there is more focus on an educational plan than there is on the rigid structure of sitting in a seat and listening to a "sage on the stage" talking for 30 or 60 minutes. Information Inspirations Jessica Gore, 3L at University of New Hampshire Franklin Pierce School of Law has an attitude of “if nobody else will do it, allow me”… And she proved that by producing a better design for understanding the Federal Rules of Evidence. She joins us, ironically on the same day as her Evidence mid-term, to talk about how she knew she could design a much better rules book than what was on the market. Her method of using Twitter to gather feedback and improve upon the prototype is exactly what we discussed in last week's episode, so she is definitely our inspiration this week. Check out Jessica's IP Illustrated tools website as well. Share with a friend If you like what you hear, please share the podcast with a friend or colleague.
