Storyteller and actress Erica Gerard talks to Joe about her call to becoming a rabbi...and her call away from it. Choose Your Own Religion: because everyone has a story, no matter what they believe.
Nima and Michelle discuss letting go of THINGS from past relationships. Storytellers: Joe Quint (www.chooseyourownreligion.com, T: @joe_quint) is a comedian and storyteller in Los Angeles from Newton, North Carolina. He hosts and produces the podcast “Choose Your Own Religion”, interviewing comedians, artists, preachers, and more about their spirituality, as well as a live storytelling show also called Choose Your Own Religion—”the Moth with religious stories”—produced at Neighborhood Unitarian Universalist Church in Pasadena. He also runs the Copper Still Comedy show every Tuesday night at 8:30 at the Copper Still bar in Koreatown. Erin Jourdan (T: @erinimus) is a writer, editor and teacher living in Los Angeles. Her writing focuses on the fantastic, often creating paracosms, or imagined worlds that have their own language, customs, and rules. She also works with the concept of blind spots, the idea that there is a limit to human perception, yet we feel more than can be quantified. She thinks of writing as "creating clothing for ghosts." Or as the German photographer Oliver Boberg stated, "I try to build set decorations for a film which is inside the people." She collects ideas, post-it notes, to-do lists, fragments, curious words, photographs, anecdotes and overheard verbal musings and spins them into the stories you see here. T.J. Peters (tjpetersonline.com, T: @tpeters) is a humorist of little note. His screenplays have advanced in competition at the Austin Film Fest, Final Draft's Big Break, Bluecat, and others. His prose and poetry has been published by Rattle, UCLA's Journal of the Arts, No Extra Words, and is forthcoming to ELJ Publications. He considers himself an amateur falconer, but there is not evidence to support this claim.
Jana Fisher chooses her own religion! Jana is a fellow preacher’s kid and Moth-winning storyteller. After playing her story from the live Choose Your Own Religion, she told me about her struggle discovering her queer identity while growing up in an evangelical church. We also talk about the Enneagram, covenants vs. creeds, the struggle of authenticity, the archetypical Jesus, rigid views of Christianity leading to a fragile Christianity, religion as cultural technology, and why she still goes to church!
Erica Blumfield chooses her own religion! Erica is a storyteller that originally spurned me for an OKCupid date, but since has performed on my live show and come to be a good friend. In this episode Erica told me about her spiritual journey as someone who deals with bipolar disorder. We also talk about authenticity, the Tao te Ching, heaven, and a bunch more. I also play her story from the last live Choose Your Own Religion, which you can catch the first Sunday of every month at the Clubhouse in Los Feliz!
Bethany Radloff chooses her own religion! Beth is a visual media artist in all sorts of mediums for some amazing clients--including Choose Your Own Religion! She’s also a fellow improviser, a non-fellow Michigander, a vlogger, and co-host of the YouTube show “Fresh Plays”. Don’t take my word on how talented she is, check out her site beradloff.com. I loved talking to Beth about her creative process, how she works in one art form versus another, and how art relates to spirituality. We also talk about her dabblings in Wicca, some brushes with Buddhism and create a religion that finally has an organic title. Check her out! Be RadBeth on TwitterBeth's VlogFresh Plays
Welcome to the debut episode of “Choose Your Own Religion”! In this episode, Joe runs the Voodoo down on his full origin story--where he came from (North Carolina), what his spiritual journey as a Presbyterian preacher’s kid has been like (a long, strange buffet), why he’s doing this (cult leadership), and his overall philosophies on sex, drugs, and theme songs. Guest Ryan Middledorf (producer of the WhatsaCreative Podcast Network and host of podcasts Cheers, Stomps & Whistles and Under the Top Part of a Boat) comes on as the first guest to try making their own religion. Ryan grew up vaguely Christian and makes up a religion that’s even more vague, but is as inviting as Chamomille. Find Ryan Online:Twitter Instagram
Hey Idiots! I sat down with my friend Joe Welker before he leaves to get his Master of Divinity from Harvard to hear how he's gone from comedy to pursuing becoming a Minister in the Unitarian Universalist church! It was a really cool story and he's got such an open mind about religion. Organized religion needs more people like Joe doing their talking, in my opinion. He isn't what you probably picture when you conjure up the personality of someone who becomes a pastor which is what makes his decision even cooler.
