My guest for this episode is Melissa Welker, MD MPH: a full-time anesthesiologist, mother of two boys, an entrepreneur, a cyclist, and a sustainability enthusiast. After paying off $360,000 of medical school debt in 2018 and starting a family, she felt the need to rebalance her life. This is, of course, an ongoing task, but while she continues to explore ways to incorporate less traditional paths into her clinical journey she helps other physicians find financial freedom, recreate their own professional journey, and find ways to thrive as physicians and beyond. In 2022 Dr. Welker started A Physician Home LLC to help physicians find positions that truly fit their goals clinically and personally with the goal of helping them create lives that straddle the messy tension between personal and professional goals. Queer Transfigurations: Boys Love Media in Asia (University of Hawai‘i Press, 2022), edited by James Welker, brings together twenty-one scholars exploring BL media, its fans, and its sociocultural impacts in a dozen countries in East, Southeast, and South Asia—and beyond. Contributors draw on their expertise in an array of disciplines and fields, including anthropology, fan studies, gender and sexuality studies, history, literature, media studies, political science, and sociology to shed light on BL media and its fandoms. The boys love (BL) genre was created for girls and women by young female manga (comic) artists in early 1970s Japan to challenge oppressive gender and sexual norms. Over the years, BL has seen almost irrepressible growth in popularity and since the 2000s has become a global media phenomenon, weaving its way into anime, prose fiction, live-action dramas, video games, audio dramas, and fan works. BL's male–male romantic and sexual relationships have found a particularly receptive home in other parts of Asia, where strong local fan communities and locally produced BL works have garnered a following throughout the region, taking on new meanings and engendering widespread cultural effects. Queer Transfigurations reveals the far-reaching influences of the BL genre, demonstrating that it is truly transnational and transcultural in diverse cultural contexts. It has also helped bring about positive changes in the status of LGBT(Q) people and communities as well as enlighten local understandings of gender and sexuality throughout Asia. Queer Transfigurations shows that, some fifty years after the first BL manga appeared in print, the genre is continuing to reverberate and transform lives. James Welker is a professor in the Department of Cross-Cultural Studies, Kanagawa University, Yokohama, Japan. His research focuses primarily on gender and sexuality in postwar and contemporary Japan, especially fan cultures, feminisms, and the LGBT(Q) community. He is the author of Transfigurations: Redefining Women in Late Twentieth-Century Japan (forthcoming). Linshan Jiang is Postdoctoral Associate in the Department of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies at Duke University. She received her Ph.D. in East Asian Languages and Cultural Studies from University of California, Santa Barbara, where she also obtained a Ph.D. emphasis in Translation Studies. Her research interests are modern and contemporary literature, film, and popular culture in mainland China, Taiwan, and Japan; trauma and memory studies; gender and sexuality studies; queer studies; as well as comparative literature and translation studies. Because of the limitations placed on the global supply chains by the pandemic, Just In Time inventory is no longer viable for many businesses. In light of this, businesses must get more people from more countries involved in sourcing their inventory. Scott Welker-Reyes is the VP of Operations & Administration at Fermob USA and has tons of experience in eCommerce and sourcing inventory from around the world. You'll hear about how to find international sourcing partners, what to consider when placing your next order, and why your business should choose FBA or FBM.Takeaways:There are ambassadors from other countries that work in the US whose job is to help businesses find sourcing partners in their home countries. These can be a great resource for discovering alternative suppliers. If your product requires multiple pieces of different materials, once you find a manufacturer for one of the parts, they likely already know other manufacturers who can make the rest of the parts. As a result of the supply chain issues over the past few years, businesses need to hedge their bets and order over and above what they would normally use. Most forecasting models have been made useless from the recent shortages. The biggest cause of increases in domestic prices for both companies and consumers is the pierce of ocean freight. Trans-pacific freight costs have risen up to 500% and that is if the cargo can even get loaded on a ship.Amazon has created an expectation for consumers that if they order something today, they should have it tomorrow. This is not the case with large items like furniture and wholesale distributors have struggled because of it.For furniture brands, the choice to use FBA needs to be carefully considered because of the shipping costs incurred by the seller and the higher risk of items being damaged during shipping due to undertrained and overburdened staff. If you have a large offering of products that also come in many different colors, consider paring those options down when selling on Amazon and only offering 6 colors instead of 24.Quote of the Show:“At this point in time, Just In Time, inventory just doesn't work any longer” - Scott Welker-ReyesLinks:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/scott-welker-reyes/ Personal Website: https://scottwelkerreyes.com/ Company website: https://www.fermobusa.com/ Shout Outs:USPSWays to Tune In:Apple Podcast (Leave a Review)iHeart RadioPodchaser (Leave a Review)Amazon MusicAudibleSpotifyGoogle PodcastStitcherYouTube

On this episode I chatted with former NFL player Wes Welker. Wes was born in Oklahoma City on May 1, 1981.  He began his football career at Heritage Hall High School in Oklahoma City and during his Junior year, he helped lead his team to the 2A State Football Championship defeating Tishomingo High School.  He was named The Daily Oklahoman All-State Player of the Year and Oklahoma State Player of the Year by USA Today. Out of high school, Welker was offered a scholarship at Texas Tech to play for the Red Raiders.  His amazing athleticism prompted Welker to win the Mosi Tatupu Award, given annually to the best special teams' player in college football. He was also named to the Sports Illustrated All-Decade Team as a punt returner.  Yet, after his senior year, Welker was not invited to the NFL Scouting Combine. Welker signed as an undrafted free agent with the San Diego Chargers.  After the Chargers he decided to sign with the Miami Dolphins where he was mostly used on special teams. Welker joined the New England Patriots beginning a lustrous five year career with the team.  While in New England, Welker led the league in receptions in 2007, 2009 and 2011.  He holds the four highest single-season reception totals in Patriot history, as well as four of the top ten receiving yardage totals, including the franchise record.  Welker was selected to the Pro Bowl, the All-Pro Team, or both, in every season of his Patriots career. In 2013, Welker signed a two-year, $12 million contract with the Denver Broncos. In his debut as a Bronco, Welker had nine receptions for 67 yards and two touchdowns against the Baltimore Ravens.  By week 11, Welker had more touchdowns than he had the entire previous season with the Patriots and as many as he had in any season with New England.  In January 2014, he earned his third AFC Championship win after he helped the Broncos defeat his former team, the New England Patriots.  In 2017, Wes became an NFL Assistant Coach for the Houston Texans and in 2019, he became the Wide Receivers Coach for the San Francisco 49ers.  He currently serves as the Wide Receivers Coach for the Miami Dolphins. Have you ever thought “Things will slow down once this project at work is done,” or “I'll clear up my calendar once I have a baby,” or at least heard the phrase “I'll sleep when I'm dead?” All of these phrases imply that you're waiting for a specific milestone to hit before you even think about taking steps to slow down and let go of some commitments you're clinging to. We are so conditioned to be busy that we forget we don't need a reason to slow down. In fact, slowing down now will allow us to actually enjoy those milestones when they come! In this episode, Katie Welker is here to share how she's been intentional about slowing down and leaving more white space on her calendar for peace. Katie is a 32-year-old newlywed, devoted dog mama and fraternal twin. After spending nearly a decade in Buffalo and Chicago, she's currently living life out loud in her hometown of Rochester, N.Y. She has a career in corporate communications, a side business sharing her love for clean makeup and skincare, and spent nearly a decade as a high school cheerleading coach. An enthusiast for confidence, self-care and mental health, she creates a safe space for people to be their purest selves through her long standing blog, social media platforms and in person. Slowing down is not only allowed, it's also so important for keeping stress levels in check. It's okay to let go of current commitments to hold space for slowing down. So many of us wait for certain milestones - after a project at work wraps, when you have kids, when you retire - to slow down or to change our habits. Rather than waiting for a milestone, prioritize rest and change your habits now. It will actually allow you to enjoy the milestone when it comes. People might not understand how or why you're taking time to slow down or let go of current commitments, but you don't need to justify your choices to them at all. There doesn't have to be a concrete reason why you're slowing down - you deserve that space no matter what! Welcome to the Wake Up Call Podcast with Alicia Hopkins (that's me!). I work in corporate sales by day and am a personal development guru and Life Coach by night. My goal in this podcast is to share valuable and actionable tips on what I call the “Core Four” - mindfulness, movement, habits, and growth - so you can build a life that feels true to you. I will be interviewing people who have had a “wake up call” that their good-on-paper life wasn't lighting them up, and what they did to change that. An Official Miami Dolphins PodcastWes Welker has been underestimated for most of his life…and what a mistake that has been! Despite a spectacular high school career for which he was named the Oklahoma State Player of the Year as a senior, the 5-9 Welker did not receive a single college offer until a Texas Tech recruit backed out of his scholarship at the last minute. As a Red Raider, Welker quickly earned the nickname “The Natural” and over four years, hauled in 21 receiving touchdowns, two rushing TDs, and set then-NCAA records for punt return yards (1,761) and punt return touchdowns (8), but did not receive an invite to the NFL combine, and went undrafted in 2004. Welker signed with the San Diego Chargers as a free agent and made the team's final 53-man roster, only to be released after the first game of the season. The Miami Dolphins signed Welker and he became an immediate cult hero in South Florida. Initially shining as a special teams standout (and still holding several team records in the kicking game), Welker quickly became a valuable contributor to the Dolphins offense as well. The New England Patriots traded for Welker prior to the 2007 season, and he rewarded them by becoming one of the most productive wide receivers in NFL history, leading the league in receptions in 2007, 2009, and 2011, earning five Pro Bowl nods, and finishing his career with 16,797 all-purpose yards and nearly 15 NFL records.Wes dove in with OJ and Seth prior to the 2021 NFL Draft and discussed his Cherokee heritage, explains a helmet-sized initiation into the Dolphins locker room, fondly recalls attending an outrageous bar mitzvah with Jason Taylor and Zach Thomas, shares how he pulled Tom Brady and Bill Belichick into an epic prank of fellow former Dolphin Larry Izzo, and reveals his thoughts on whether or not he deserves a bust in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.Contributors to this episode include Sean “DJ Prec” Todd and Dolphins Productions.Theme song created and performed by The Honorable SoLo D.
