Welcome to Episode 43 of Products of the Mind. On this episode, I speak with Comic-Con fan, blogger, fashion designer for Hero Within, and foster parent Tony Kim. “Ultimately we believe that everyone has a hero within themselves. We all have the capacity to lead and inspire and save, and to be a source of inspiration for others.” Tony talks about growing up, and his relationship with comic-book superheroes. We get first-hand insight into the unique personal and cultural identity issues associated with minorities who “go nerd.” Tony talks about how his identity issues strengthened his relationship with comics, drove him toward his current successes, and reinforced his beliefs. We’ll also discuss the Comic-Con culture and how it has changed over the years; bloggers; the need for heroes; fostering and adoption; and the fascinating relationship between orphans and superheroes. Since being a parent and full time Comic-Con supporter was not enough for Tony, he’ll also tell us his inspiration for Hero Within, his new hero-inspired clothing line for men. This and more on today’s fun chat with Tony Kim. The ladies are finally getting the flattering geeky threads they always wanted. But what about the guys, eh? Men's Fandom Fashion is the topic for our first episode back from a long hiatus (an explanation is on the episode). This episode was recorded a long time ago. Actually a long long time ago before SWVII was released... /sheepish. In the sixth episode of the Legends of Tomorrow Podcast, co-hosts Kat Calamia and Gregg Katzman are joined by Alan Sizzler Kistler - NY Times Best Selling Author of Doctor Who: A History; superhero historian: host of the Crazy Sexy Geeks podcast - to talk all about Hawkgirl (Kendra and Shayera) and Hawkman! To help prepare listeners for the characters' big debut in The CW DC universe, the trio has a detailed conversation about Hawkman and Hawkgirl's elaborate history in several comics - everything from the classic origin to The New 52 is discussed! Kat, Gregg, and Alan also make some reading recommendations and explain why they're interested in the frequently reincarnated couple. The co-hosts delve into appearances Hawkgirl and Hawkman have made in other forms of media (primarily the classic Justice League animated shows and Smallville) - it's very possible they forgot to mention Hawkgirl's playable (and awesome) in Injustice: Gods Among Us, though! After that, the three speak about Hawkgirl and Hawkman's Legends of Tomorrow costumes, and have an extended discussion about how they hope the two heroes are utilized in DC's Legends of Tomorrow! The three go over the DC foe's origin story and history, disucss what makes him an interesting fiend, and share their thoughts on actor Casper Crump landing the role. Vandal Savage is known for collaborating with others, so who could Savage attempt to manipulate on the Legends of Tomorrow team? Kat, Gregg, and Alan speculate about characters who may consider switching sides! The trio also recommend several things to watch (one DC animated movie is mandatory viewing!) and some comics to read if you want to do a little more Vandal Savage homework before Legends of Tomorrow debuts in 2016.
