“Human beings are the only puzzle I can't figure out.” Aldis Hodge On this powerful episode of The Pivot Podcast, Ryan Clark, Channing Crowder, and Fred Taylor sit down with actor, producer, and master watchmaker Aldis Hodge for one of their most raw and revealing conversations yet. Hodge opens up about being raised by a single mother whose strength and sacrifice shaped his work ethic and sense of responsibility from an early age. Growing up in an area where the presence of the KKK was real and racial tension wasn't just history—it was lived experience—he reflects on how those early encounters with hate forged both resilience and purpose. Rather than shrink, he found his voice. A passionate, unapologetic Black voice grounded in truth, excellence, and accountability. Best known for his roles in Straight Outta Compton, Hidden Figures, One Night in Miami, Hawkman in Black Adam, and currently the lead in Prime Video series Cross, Hodge shares the pressure of portraying cultural icons and superheroes alike. He discusses the responsibility that comes with representing real stories and real communities—and how he channels personal experience into every performance. Beyond Hollywood, Aldis speaks about fatherhood and how being a proud girl dad reshaped his definition of success. Legacy is no longer just about career accolades—it's about what he models at home, the protection he provides, and the standard he sets for the next generation. In a deeply personal moment, Aldis lets us in on a powerful exchange between him and his wife that has forever changed and guided him. He also dives into his passion for puzzles and engineering, explaining how building his own watch brand is rooted in ownership, precision, and creating generational wealth. Drawing powerful parallels between elite athletes and elite artists, Hodge breaks down why mastery demands hard work, sacrifice, and the courage to pivot toward purpose. This episode is about perseverance through adversity, using your platform with intention, and building a legacy that stands taller than the obstacles meant to break you. #WonderMan #Marvel #Disney #YahyaAbdulMateenII #BenKingsley #MCU Wonder Man represents a different type of show in that its more concerned with being focused on the personal journey of the character than doing a typical heroes journey. In the grand scheme, its a smart choice. Wonder Man as a character has a very muddled history much like DC's Hawkman. So whats the best way to present the character in a streamlined way? Have the show structured around Simon Williams trying to make it in Hollywood while he's also trying to figure himself out. Pair him up with Trevor Slattery and you got a solid show that does a really good job of being self contained yet lowkey progressing certain aspects of the MCU. Definitely a must watch.

Cal and Liam are back with one of the final episodes of Justice League Unlimited that ironically calls back to the distant past and involves the future for Green Lantern and Hawkgirl/Shayera with a review of the season three episode "Ancient History." The hosts discuss the complicated comic origin stories of Hawkman and Hawkgirl and how this story plays into it with the inclusion of the DCAU's own confusing Hawkman origins. Additionally, the Good Brothers speculate on Geoff Johns' credit for teleplay and a story that gets mixed reviews from our hosts. As part of 12 Days of The Comic Source, this Fireside Chat features Jace welcoming back writer Jeremy Adams for an in-depth, free-flowing conversation covering a wide range of current and recent projects alongside broader creative philosophy. Jeremy discusses Aquaman, focusing on redefining Arthur Curry as an avatar-level powerhouse and how DC KO positions him against Hawkman in a tournament setting that highlights his expanded abilities; Green Lantern, detailing long-form planning around the fractured emotional spectrum, Hal Jordan's evolving role, and the reintegration of legacy elements like Jon Stewart, Kyle Rayner, and long-dormant continuity threads; and the digital crossover Flash / Fantastic Four, where Jeremy explains the constraints and opportunities of vertical-format storytelling and character interaction outside heavy continuity. The conversation also touches on multiple DC KO tie-ins, including a Green Lantern wrestling-themed one-shot that expands the Wham mythology, the youth-focused The Kids Are All Fight, which centers Jon Kent guiding younger heroes during a world-ending crisis, and the high-concept DC KO crossover featuring non-DC characters such as Homelander, Vampirella, and Sub-Zero. Jeremy further reflects on the broader DC creative landscape, including Absolute and Next Level initiatives, while sharing insight into continuity stewardship, editorial collaboration, and the balance between ambitious ideas and reader expectations, before closing on a seasonal note as he talks about specific holiday traditions such as winter outings like sledding, revisiting favorite Christmas movies, and enjoying local holiday events and markets with his family as a way to slow down and reconnect during the end-of-year rush.

Jace and Rocky return for another Comic Boom! / Comic Source DC Spotlight for the week of December 10, 2025, kicking off with holiday updates on gift guides, Fireside Chats, and year-end scheduling before diving into a varied slate of nine DC books. They start with Action Comics #1093, where the Silver Age tone, moral dilemmas, and standout Skylar Patridge art drive a strong Superboy-focused chapter; then move into Batman and Robin #28, a top-tier issue that deepens the Quiet Man mystery, expands the Ventriloquist twist, and showcases why Phillip Kennedy Johnson's run will be so missed. In DC KO, Aquaman #12 becomes the week's breakout as Jeremy Adams and John Timms push Arthur's power set to astonishing levels in a visually explosive Hawkman showdown. Gotham by Gaslight: A League for Justice #6 gets praise for world-building but mixed reactions for a rushed, multiversal conclusion, while Supergirl #8 lands as a quiet, emotional holiday detour centered on loneliness, legacy, and the Linda-robot twist. Scott Snyder and Jock's Absolute Batman #15 earns divided reactions—Rocky loving its monstrous Joker origin while Jace ranks it lowest out of personal preference—leading into the universally panned DC KO: Wonder Woman vs. Lobo, a structurally chaotic, inconsistently illustrated, rule-breaking oddity that squanders a marquee matchup. The guys close with Green Lantern Corps #11, a strong, character-rich chapter spotlighting Ellie, Jon Stewart, Equanar's origin, and the growing Corps-wide stakes, before wrapping with Children of the Round Table #4, a well-executed setup issue introducing each magical weapon, expanding the Camelot training mythology, and dropping a sharp political twist with Mordred influencing the U.S. presidency. As always, the episode ends with full rankings, collected-edition recommendations, and reminders to catch the video on Comic Boom! and the audio on The Comic Source podcast feed.

Show notes provided by Jack AdrienLet's be honest, DC Comics' frequent universal reboots or recons have kind of become a long running joke at this point. Through the Crisis on Infinite Earths (1985), Zero Hour: Crisis in Time (1994), Infinite Crisis(2005), Flashpoint (2011), Convergence (2015), DC Universe: Rebirth (2016), and DC Comics: Death Metal(2020), one DC character has weathered, even prospered, during the occasional multiversal frolic or timeline revision. Surprisingly, that character is not one of the iconic DC Trinity characters (i.e., Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman). No, Hawkman, throughout his long history and many iterations, truly epitomizes how good writers and editors can reimagine or reinvent a familiar, but B-list character, no matter what shape the comic universe takes.Join the Mint Condition crew of James, Joe, Keith, and Jack as we untangle the history, mystery, and significance of Hawkman (aka Carter Hall, Hawk, Khufu, Savage Hawkman, Katar Hol, Fel Andar, Hawk Avatar).

Show notes provided by Joe PelusoWhat do you get when you take a police procedural, mix it with science fiction and super-heroes, throw in social and political overtones that reflect modern society--and--call it an origin story? You get one guess--and it has nothing to do with a dead planet named Krypton. Give up? Well, the answer is Timothy Truman's three issuemasterpiece--HAWKWORLD.    Join you hosts Keith and Joe for another installment of "Thinking Out of the Longbox With Keith" as the boys strap on their Nth metal wings and fly into an adventure of dynamic discovery of one of DC's seminal characters--Hawkman. The later half of the decade of the 1980's saw many DC icons reimagined for a modern age as the Crisis on Infinite Earths opened the door to new, fresh version of Superman, Wonder Woman, The Batman, The Flash, Green Arrow, and the "wingedwonder" from the Planet Thanagar!    Truman's Hawkworld is a gritty, commentary on the abuse of power, and how it can tear apart an individual who has had his life mapped out for him. Katar Hol is a man fighting demons of the heart and mind, as well as those that prey on the less fortunate in the real world. The guys discuss the themes and tones such a world would impose on one man, and how he must fall from grace to eventually conquer all his demons so that he may become the beloved Silver Age version of Hawkman.    And as they extol the virtues of Truman's dynamic and nuanced writing, they fairly flip their minds when they profusely praise his incredible art.    This is a book the guys have been wanting to wax poetic about for a long time. We feel sure you will enjoy the discourse of this somewhat overlooked gem from comics best decade. And that classic exclamation "Look up in the sky!"--takes on a whole new meaning after reading Hawkworld!

Along the way, Power Girl calls Hawkman an ass, Black Adam bifurcates thru the JSA transport and all of Northwind's friends, with their bird talons and supple chests, look to make mincemeat of the heroes.Over in HAWKMAN, Doctor Fate seemingly turns heel as Nabu mucks up the JSA on the offensive. Hawkman clangs his own son on the head with his mace, Brainwave probes Shazam's teenage thoughts and Hourman is gutted….literally! All this plus Jen and Shawn offer a correction regarding Billy Batson's age and discuss Jason Todd's failed pro wrestling career.*** PROPER COMIC BOOK DISCUSSION STARTS AT 00:09:55 ***Promos: #JSAPRIL (https://fireandwaterpodcast.com/podcast/jsapril/) / THE MONITOR TAPES (http://themonitortapes.com)Continue the conversation with Shawn and Jen on Twitter / Instagram / Facebook / Threads / Bluesky or email the show at worstcollectionever@gmail.comAlso, get hip to all of our episodes on YouTube in its own playlist! https://bit.ly/WorstCollectionEverYTDownload the podcast on Spotify, Apple Podcasts and wherever you get your favorite shows. JSA #56 (2004)Welcome to #JSApril! Worst Collection Ever is proud to participate in this celebration of JSA content by delivering our wicked takes on Geoff Johns's “Black Reign” saga! This issue plays out more like the first act of a promsing action flick, with Black Adam recruiting a crew of disenchanted, mayhem-seeking folks to help him liberate his home country of Kahndaq. We got the assassin Nemesis, a tatted-up Eclipso, a freshly-mutated Northwind, a conflicted Atom Smasher and Chester Bennington of Linkin Park aka Brainwave aka Robert Englund from the V mini-series. The scene gets bloody and emotional and there are cooling brains all over the place. We also spend a bit of time parsing out Northwind's creation so, if you new to the podcast, put a fun movie on for the kids and then hide under a blanket while you listen to this. All this plus Jen and Shawn buy a bunch of cheap trades, new DC Absolute offerings and the Hawk Tuah Girl runs afoul of the Dark Knight![NOTE — we (or specifically Shawn) refers to Northwind a bunch as “Hawkwind.” Hawkwind was a band that Lemmy was in before Motörhead - we are aware of this.
