Black Adam – It's Electrifying

Black Adam was supposed to change the hierarchy of the DC Universe. Instead, it tanked with critics and couldn't conjure enough magic at the box office to earn a sequel. Thus, it appears the Rock's long awaited appearance as the anti-hero is a one and done. Frankly, that kind of sucks because Black Adam is an entertaining movie. It's a flawed one, to be sure, but watching the titular hero mow down bad guys is a hell of a lot of fun. Throw in an exceptional Pierce Brosnan portrayal of Dr. Fate, as well as a more than capable Hawkman adaptation (played by Aldis Hodge), and the groundwork for a bigger, better sequel was laid. Alas, it is not meant to be. Grossing just $392.6 million on a budget north of $200 million, Black Adam couldn't prove its worth to the new DC higher ups. Bummer. Now, sit back, electrify your taste buds with a Black Butte Porter from Deschutes, and tell them the man in black sent you! I, the Thunderous Wizard (@WriterTLK), Chumpzilla, Capt. Cash, and Bling Blake are rallying Kahndaq to fight the undead army of Sabbac! This Week's Segments: Introduction/Plot Breakdown – The world needed a hero. It got Black Adam. The time of heroes is over! (00:00) Lingering Questions – We bid a fond farewell to Hop Nation USA, and then we discuss how badass it would've been to see Superman throw down with the Rock. (35:59) The "Teth-Adam" Trivia Challenge – The Double Turn Podcast wins a battle royal against Amanda Waller's goons, and then I challenge the field to trivia about the movie. There is a lot of change afoot for DC Comics in regards to their live-action presence.  First the DCEU now just the DC Universe.  That "The World Needs Heroes" trailer that had one independent project and 3 DCEU projects  was quickly short-changed to just the well-received The Batman movie and only this one movie, Black Adam, came out in this year.  The last of these DCEU, now just DCU movies, The Suicide Squad, came out all the way back in late July in 2021.  With all this talk from Black Adam leading man Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson about this being a new era for DC with his character at the center of it, and all the behind the scenes changes with James Gunn taking charge of a super confused direction for these movies, this movie does potentially take the lead for the future direction of this entire storyline and continuity.  What will the end result be for these movies.  Will this franchise rise from the ashes to challenge Marvel, or will this franchise continue to wallow in despair with the uneven track record it is currently known for.  Also, be aware, this episode will for sure be an appreciation episode for all Pierce Brosnan does not only in the super cool role of Dr. Fate, but just overall.  So be excited for that and more on this super episode of Nick Nack Goes to the Movies!

We talk about what we liked and didn't like in the movie as well as that mid-credits scene and theorize on what the future is for the DCEU and Black Adam. From New Line Cinema, Dwayne Johnson stars in the action adventure “Black Adam.” The first-ever feature film to explore the story of the DC Super Hero comes to the big screen under the direction of Jaume Collet-Serra (“Jungle Cruise”). In ancient Kahndaq, Teth Adam was bestowed the almighty powers of the gods. After using these powers for vengeance, he was imprisoned, becoming Black Adam. Nearly 5,000 years have passed and Black Adam has gone from man, to myth, to legend. Now released, his unique form of justice, born out of rage, is challenged by modern day heroes who form the Justice Society: Hawkman, Dr. Fate, Atom Smasher and Cyclone. Johnson stars alongside Aldis Hodge (“City on a Hill,” “One Night in Miami”) as Hawkman, Noah Centineo (“To All the Boys I've Loved Before”) as Atom Smasher, Sarah Shahi (“Sex/Life,” “Rush Hour 3”), Marwan Kenzari (“Murder on the Orient Express,” “The Mummy”), Quintessa Swindell (“Voyagers,” “Trinkets”) as Cyclone, Mo Amer (“Mo,” “Ramy”), Bodhi Sabongui (“A Million Little Things”), and Pierce Brosnan (the “Mamma Mia!” and James Bond franchises) as Dr. Fate. Collet-Serra directed from a screenplay written by Adam Sztykiel and Rory Haines & Sohrab Noshirvani, based on characters from DC, based on characters created by Bill Parker and C.C. Beck. The film's producers are Beau Flynn, Hiram Garcia, Dwayne Johnson and Dany Garcia, with Toby Emmerich, Richard Brener, Dave Neustadter, Chris Pan, Walter Hamada, Adam Schlagman, Geoff Johns, Eric McLeod and Scott Sheldon executive producing. The director's behind-the-scenes creative team includes Oscar-nominated director of photography Lawrence Sher (“Joker”), production designer Tom Meyer (“Real Steel”), editors Mike Sale (“Red Notice,” “Skyscraper”) and John Lee (“Anyone Home?”), costume designers Kurt and Bart (“Deadpool 2,” “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 & 2”), Oscar-winning visual effects supervisor Bill Westenhofer (“Life of Pi,” “Wonder Woman”), and composer Lorne Balfe (“Black Widow”). This latest addition to the DC Cinematic Universe stars Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as the titular hero….well he's not actually a hero, more of an anti-hero who has been bestowed the almighty powers of the gods, THIS is his origin story.  Along with that, we also get introduced to the Justice Society lead by Hawkman played by Aldis Hodge who is joined by Doctor Fate played by Pierce Brosnan along with other heroes.  The story mostly takes place in the fictional Middle Eastern city of Kahndaq which has been overrun by foreign military powers…..and only ONE man is there to defend its citizens who are trying to revolt.  Guess who that happens to be?  Jaume Collet-Serra directs this superhero epic….sorry anti-hero epic.Host: Geoff Gershon  Editors: Geoff and Ella GershonProducer: Marlene Gershonhttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

The question on everybody's minds as we move into the Box office weekend is, can The Rock's "Black Adam" save the DC Universe? In this minisode review, resident DC Comics fan, Producer KellieAnn Halvorsen, gives the answer on this 11th DC Extended Universe movie, and spin-off of 2019's “Shazam!”  While the film is formulaic fun for superhero film watchers, there is more to be desired for such a stellar cast and legacy characters. But is it worth a watch on the big screen? Listen to find out.  Beyond Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Gaming and Tech, the brains behind Fan Effect are connoisseurs of categories surpassing the nerdy. Brilliant opinions and commentary on all things geek, but surprising knowledge and witty arguments over pop culture, Star Trek, MARVEL vs DC, and a wide range of movies, TV shows, and more.
