【 What We Talked About】 In the New York City Democratic mayoral primary, a little-known 33-year-old State Assemblyman, Zohran Mamdani, defeated former Governor Andrew Cuomo in a stunning upset victory, sending shockwaves through the American political establishment. Mamdani, a self-described 'democratic socialist,' whose rise not only positions him to potentially become the first socialist mayor of the global financial capital but also marks a historic victory for the American progressive movement. From discussing "Halalflation" to adeptly using a range of new media strategies, how did Mamdani, in just a few short months, surge from single digits in the polls to win a race that once seemed impossible? How did his proposals, such as a rent freeze and universal pre-K, resonate in a city marked by a vast wealth gap? And when progressive idealism meets the complex political realities of New York, what challenges lie ahead for him? In this episode, we're joined by our guest Zhong, who is based in Brooklyn, to do a deep dive into Mamdani's rise and discuss the shifting dynamics of class, race, and generational politics in New York City that this election has brought to the forefront. Corrections: In the episode, we mention that AOC's primary win was eight years ago. This was a slip of the tongue; it was actually seven years ago. The episode references a New York Times analysis indicating that the 18-24 age group was the largest demographic in the primary. This data was subsequently updated after our recording, showing that the 25-34 age group actually had a higher turnout. In this episode of Christ the Center, Camden Bucey is joined once again by Lane Tipton and Carlton Wynne for a substantive follow-up to their earlier discussion of Keith Mathison's Toward a Reformed Apologetic: A Critique of the Thought of Cornelius Van Til. In the months since their first review, Dr. Mathison published a blog response, prompting deeper analysis and clarification. Together, Drs. Bucey, Tipton and Wynne explore key critiques Mathison levels against Van Til, especially the claims of epistemological idealism and the so-called “omniscience requirement” for true knowledge. The panel addresses these concerns with thoughtful care, highlighting Van Til's emphasis on covenantal epistemology, the distinction between psychological and ethical knowledge, and the non-neutrality of unbelieving thought. The episode also tackles Mathison's treatment of common grace and the antithesis—core concepts in Van Til's apologetic system. Does Van Til teach that unbelievers attain true knowledge by way of common grace? What is the actual function of common grace in a fallen world? And how does Van Til preserve the absolute ethical antithesis between belief and unbelief without denying shared external reality or meaningful engagement? This is a clarifying and edifying conversation for anyone interested in Reformed theology, presuppositional apologetics, or the legacy of Cornelius Van Til. Idealism Is Not Ideal

This week on The Conscious Consultant Hour, we're exploring a subtle but powerful force that often shapes our inner world without us even realizing it. Idealism. While it might seem noble to hold high ideals, for ourselves, others, or the world, idealism can sometimes take us out of the present moment and into a version of reality that doesn't exist. When we cling to how things should be, we often suffer from the gap between that vision and what actually is in reality.Idealizing people, relationships, or outcomes can disconnect us from our intuition and cause us to miss the deeper wisdom available in real-life situations. Whether it's expecting a partner to act a certain way, believing that we must live up to an impossible spiritual or professional standard, or feeling crushed when the world doesn't meet our ideals, the result is often disappointment, frustration, and a subtle form of self-rejection and self-judgment.In this episode, we'll uncover how to recognize idealism when it shows up, how to gently come back to grounded reality, and how to make peace with what is, without giving up our hopes or values. Sam will share some very personal stories to highlight this. It is not about settling, it's about living from truth instead of illusion. Listen in and learn how letting go of perfection can actually bring more freedom, clarity, and genuine fulfillment to your life.Tune in and share your own thoughts and feelings about how you have idealized life on our YouTube livestream or on our Facebook page.http://www.theconsciousconsultant.com/https://www.ddwc.nyc/https://amzn.to/3hjLPaOhttps://amzn.to/3pGiHyuhttps://amzn.to/3UJ3kixhttps://amzn.to/3Im9W2tSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/the-conscious-consultant-hour8505/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

In this episode, Alyson and Breht explore Friedrich Engels' Dialectics of Nature, a bold and underappreciated attempt to apply dialectical materialism to the natural sciences. Often dismissed or misunderstood, this unfinished work offers a sweeping view of reality - from physics and chemistry to evolution, human consciousness, and ecological breakdown - through the lens of Marxist philosophy. Together, they unpack Engels' central claim that nature itself unfolds dialectically: through contradiction, motion, transformation, and interconnection. They cover the three laws of dialectics, Engels' materialist account of human evolution, his critique of mechanistic science, vulgar materialism, and metaphysical thinking, as well as his early warnings about capitalism's ecological consequences. Along the way, they connect these insights to Marx's concept of species-being, and reflect on what this revolutionary worldview offers in the age of climate crisis, hyper-alienation, and late capitalist decay. Finally, Alyson and Breht have a fascinating open-ended discussion about the existential and spiritual implications of dialectical materialism as a worldview. Whether you're new to dialectical materialism or looking to deepen your understanding, this conversation reframes Engels' work as a profound contribution not just to Marxism, but to the philosophy of science itself. Read the book here: https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/.../9780593914113/...   The Myth of American Idealism offers a timely and comprehensive introduction to the incisive critiques of U.S. power that have made Noam Chomsky a “global phenomenon,” one of the most widely known public intellectuals of all time. Surveying the history of U.S. military and economic activity around the world, Chomsky and his co-author Nathan J. Robinson vividly trace the way the American pursuit of global domination has wrought havoc in country after country – without, ironically, making Americans any safer. And they explore how dominant elites in the United States have pushed self-serving myths about this country's commitment to “spreading democracy,” while pursuing a reckless foreign policy that served the interest of few and endangered all too many.   Check out our new bi-weekly series, "The Crisis Papers" here: https://www.patreon.com/bitterlakepresents/shop   Thank you guys again for taking the time to check this out. He joins us to talk about everything from the loss of America's moral authority after the re-election of Donald Trump, to why we need more ordinary people speaking up and defending principles of human decency. This week's Good Weekend features an extract from Bregman’s new book, Moral Ambition, examining our monstrous and long-running cruelty to animals. Hosting the conversation – which also delves into the corrosiveness of misogynistic male influencers, as well as the role of “realistic idealism” in improving our society's moral trajectory – is Good Weekend acting editor Greg Callaghan.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Today's episode is an embarrassing story that I'm going to share with you so that you can learn from our mistake. One of the consequences of working with really smart people is that you can often get caught up in the elegance of an ideal solution. There is something to be said for consistency. If you want to reduce the possibility of errors, then it makes sense to eliminate or at least reduce the number of choices. Each decision represents an opportunity for error, or for misunderstanding. Today's story was an attempt at driving consistency that had unintended consequences. -------------**Real Estate Espresso Podcast:** Spotify: [The Real Estate Espresso Podcast](https://open.spotify.com/show/3GvtwRmTq4r3es8cbw8jW0?si=c75ea506a6694ef1)   iTunes: [The Real Estate Espresso Podcast](https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/the-real-estate-espresso-podcast/id1340482613)   Website: [www.victorjm.com](http://www.victorjm.com)   LinkedIn: [Victor Menasce](http://www.linkedin.com/in/vmenasce)   YouTube: [The Real Estate Espresso Podcast](http://www.youtube.com/@victorjmenasce6734)   Facebook: [www.facebook.com/realestateespresso](http://www.facebook.com/realestateespresso)   Email: [podcast@victorjm.com](mailto:podcast@victorjm.com)  **Y Street Capital:** Website: [www.ystreetcapital.com](http://www.ystreetcapital.com)   Facebook: [www.facebook.com/YStreetCapital](https://www.facebook.com/YStreetCapital)   Instagram: [@ystreetcapital](http://www.instagram.com/ystreetcapital)

Two titanic figures in contemporary theory join us for two separate and strongly divergent episodes on the status of revolutionary thought in political philosophy today. Ray Brassier influenced a generation of philosophers not only with his outstanding and highly rigorous writing, but also his absolutely stunning translations of Quentin Meillassoux and François Laruelle, and in so doing is subcutaneously responsible for literally a decade of earthquakes in the discourse. Ray joins us to evaluate the status of Marx in the 21st century.Ray traces the long arc from Nihil Unbound through Marx, Sellars, and the inferentialist tradition, opening up an unapologetically rationalist framework for understanding both science and emancipation, without reducing either to liberal platitudes or metaphysical fantasies. We discuss the seductive dangers of naive anti-humanism, the legacy of German idealism, the automation of reason, and why political theory today needs to be deeply embedded in materialist accounts of scale, finance, and abstraction. Ray shares a trenchant critique of both the empiricist and idealist strands of Enlightenment thought, offering instead a dialectical, normatively grounded, socially embedded concept of rationality that returns to Kant and Hegel by way of Wilfrid Sellars. We strongly recommend:Ray's book Nihil Unbound: Enlightenment and Extinction His essay “The View from Nowhere”His exceptional piece "Politics of the Rift" on Théorie Communiste in e-fluxWork from the journal Endnotes (https://endnotes.org.uk/)In the episode, we also discuss theorists such as Badiou, Larouelle, Meillassoux, and Marxist reinterpretations by Moishe Postone, Théorie Communiste, and the German “New Reading” school. Ray elaborates on how capital's increasing abstraction—especially in financialized regimes where labor is decoupled from value—is not the end of Marx, but a reason to read Marx more seriously and materially than ever.

Charlotte Mason viewed all educational possibilities as fitting into one or the other of two schools of philosophy: Materialism and Idealism. Instead, she offers a "middle way," a new path that draws on the strengths of both schools. The portion of Parents and Children where she discusses these ideas is dense. In this episode of the podcast, Jessica Becker guides us through what Miss Mason had to say, and, more importantly, why it is essential for parents and teachers to find balance between these two educational extremes.   Parents and Children (Volume 2), Charlotte Mason, chapters 11-13 "Probably the chief source of weakness in our attempt to formulate a science of education is that we do not perceive that education is the outcome of philosophy. We deal with the issue and ignore the source. Hence our efforts lack continuity and definite aim. We are content to pick up a suggestion here, a practical hint there, without even troubling ourselves to consider what is that scheme of life of which such hints and suggestions are the output." (2/118)  "Method implies two things-a way to an end, and step-by-step progress in that way." (1/8) "We need not aspire to a complete and exhaustive code of educational laws. This will· come to us duly when humanity bas, so to speak, fulfilled itself. Meantime, we have enough to go on with if we would believe it. What we have to do is to gather together and order our resources ; to put the first thing foremost and all things in sequence, and to see that education is neither more nor less than the practical application of our philosophy. Hence, if our educational thought is to be sound and effectual we must look to the philosophy which underlies it, and must be in a condition to trace every counsel of perfection for the bringing-up of children to one or other of the two schools of philosophy of which it must needs be the outcome." (2/119-120) "Is our system of education to be the issue of naturalism or of idealism, or is there indeed a media via?" (2/120) "The truth is, we are in the throes of an educational revolution ; we are emerging from chaos rather than about to plunge into it; we are beginning to recognise that education is the applied science of life, and that we really have existing material in the philosophy of the ages and the science of the day to formulate an educational code whereby we may order the lives of our children and regulate our own." (2/119) "The functions of education may be roughly defined as twofold : (a) the formation of habits; (b) the presentation of ideas. The first depends far more largely than we recognise on physiological processes. The second is purely spiritual in origin, method, and result. Is it not possible that here we have the meeting-point of the two philosophies which have divided mankind since men began to think about their thoughts and ways? Both are right ; both are necessary; both have their full activity in the development of a human being at his best." (2/125) "For a habit is set up by following out an initial idea with a long sequence of corresponding acts. You tell a child that the Great Duke slept in so narrow a bed that he could not turn over, because, said he, ' When you want to turn over it's time to get up.' The boy does not wish to get up in the morning, but he does wish to be like the hero of Waterloo. You stimulate him to act upon this idea day after day for a month or so, until the habit is formed, and it is just as easy as not to get up in good time." (2/125) "You may bring your horse to the water, but you can't make him drink; and you may present ideas of the fittest to the mind of the child; but you do not know in the least which he will take, and which he will reject." (2/127) "Our part is to see that his educational plat is constantly replenished with fit and inspiring ideas, and then we must needs leave it to the child's own appetite to take which he will have, and as much as he requires." (2/127) "We shall not be content that they learn geography, history, Latin, what not,-we shall ask what salient ideas are presented in each such study, and how will these ideas affect the intellectual and moral development of the child." (2/127) "We shall probably differ from him in many matters of detail, but we shall most likely be inclined to agree with his conclusion that, not some subject of mere utility, but moral and social science conveyed by means of history, literature, or otherwise, is the one subject which we are not at liberty to leave out from the curriculum of' a being breathing thoughtful breath.'" (2/127-28) "Two things are necessary. First, we must introduce into the study of each science the philosophic spirit and method, general views, the search for the most general principles and conclusions. We must then reduce the different sciences to unity by a sound training in philosophy, which will be as obligatory to students in science as to students in literature. . . • Scientific truths, said Descartes, are battles won ; describe to the young the principal and most heroic of these battles; you will thus interest them in the results of science, and you will develop in them a scientific spirit by means of the enthusiasm for the conquest of truth; you will make them see the power of the reasoning which has led to discoveries in the past, and which will do so again in the future. How interesting arithmetic and geometry might be if we gave a short history of their principal theorems; if the child were mentally present at the labours of a Pythagoras, a Plato, a Euclid, or in modern times of a Viete, a Descartes, a Pascal, or a Leibnitz. Great theories, instead of being lifeless and anonymous abstractions, would become human, living truths, each with its own history, like a statue by Michael Angelo, or like a painting by Raphael." In this episode, David and Gene continue their exploration of the Gospel of Thomas, examining sayings 24-46 of this enigmatic Gnostic text. Building on their previous discussion, they delve deeper into the three-world Gnostic cosmology: the unity of the spiritual Pleroma, the duality of the realm of Soul/Mind (Heaven), and the unity in multiplicity of the physical world (Earth). They begin by discussing a listener comment about "combining all religions," noting that spiritual unity might indeed be the ultimate goal, as suggested in Ephesians 4:13, where the original Greek terms "Gnosis" (knowledge) and "Pleroma" (fullness) reveal deeper meaning about attaining wholeness through divine knowledge. This section of the Gospel contains powerful teachings about spiritual discernment and self-mastery:Sayings 24-26 emphasize finding inner light rather than seeking externally, loving others as manifestations of the divine, and addressing one's own spiritual blindness before criticizing others.Sayings 27-29 contrast spiritual awareness with material distraction, describing humanity as "drunk" with worldly concerns rather than "thirsty" for self-knowledge, while marveling at how consciousness (great wealth) resides within physical form (poverty).Sayings 30-32 outline the three stages of Gnostic initiation and the importance of consistent spiritual practice in establishing one's character as "a city on a high mountain."Sayings 33-35 explore spiritual discernment, warning against following blind guides while encouraging the sharing of inner wisdom.Sayings 36-41 address detachment from material concerns, the suppression of symbolic readings of sacred texts, and the principle that spiritual understanding multiplies when cultivated.Sayings 42-44 discuss becoming "passers-by" (detached observers), judging teachers by their fruits, and the consequences of acting against one's own experience of truth.Sayings 45-46 conclude with teachings on cultivating positive thoughts and transcending the ego, with John the Baptist representing the consciousness that can see Gnosis as the goal but requires the "final stroke" of ego death to achieve it.Throughout their analysis, David and Gene reveal how these ancient sayings speak to the modern seeker's journey toward self-realization, offering insights into overcoming material attachments, developing spiritual discernment, and achieving wholeness by overcoming the delusion of the false self.Deep Dive:The Gospel of ThomasChapters:01:15 Introduction03:41 Review04:57 Sayings 24-2608:01 Sayings 27-2911:32 Sayings 30-3214:38 Sayings 33-3517:43 Sayings 36-3819:51 Sayings 39-4122:42 Sayings 42-4425:16 Sayings 45-4628:26 ConclusionsResources:The Gospel of Thomas (history and various translations - Gnosis.org)Gospel of Thomas (Patterson and Robinson translation)Gnosis.org - The Gnosis ArchiveThe Nag Hammadi ScripturesThe Red Book: A Reader's Edition by Carl JungJesus and the Lost Goddess: The Secret Teachings of the Original Christians by Freke and GandyFederico Faggin on Idealism, Quantum Mechanics, Free Will, and Identity

In this conversation, Camden Bucey, Ryan Noha, Lane Tipton, and Scott Cook discuss various themes surrounding Reformed apologetics, particularly focusing on the critique of Cornelius Van Til's thought as presented in Keith Mathion's book. After highlighting Lane Tipton's new book Union with Christ: The Benefits of His Suffering and Glory, they explore the challenges of understanding Van Til's work, especially given his use of language and the philosophical context of his time. The discussion also touches on the relevance of Van Til's thought in contemporary apologetics and the importance of engaging with the limitations of human language in theology. In this episode, Ben Watkins sits down to discuss the Van Tillian tradition of presuppositional apologetics often found online along with objective idealism— an epistemological view often associated with Post-Kantians like Hegel, Fichte, and Schelling. Two claims of Van Til are challenged using the resources of objective idealism: Those two claims are (i) Christianity is a necessary condition to know anything at all and (ii) the Christian and the non-Christian have no neutral ground to resolve their disagreements. In addition to challenging these claims by appeal to a form of objective idealism, Ben also gives a brief exposition of the argument from divine hiddenness. Contrary to Van Til and other presuppositional apologetics, it is not the case everyone believes God exists. In fact, there are some people who do not believe God exists, and this fact is evidence for atheism over theism.

This episode is part interview and part dialogue between Justin Schieber and Christian YouTuber Kyle Alander about Kyle's preferred approach to the problem of evil. Alander adopts a defeat-based approach along the lines of Marilyn McCord Adams, Trent Dougherty, and John Schneider. In this almost four hour long episode, they discuss how defeat is understood in the dialectic surrounding the problem of evil. We also unpack Kyle's preferred defeat-based theodicy before exploring at some length multiple objections to it in an effort to clarify details. However, one topic we avoid here is whether adding such rich detail to one's core theory in response to the data of evil and suffering should come at some epistemic cost for the theist. That topic will hopefully be explored in future videos. This episode is not only ridiculously long, it is also unique in its format. Rather than being a live recording, this is instead composed of video clips recorded with our cell phones in response to each other as time permitted - in most cases, this meant every other day. Those clips were then edited together into what you're about to watch. Because this is a complicated topic, the conversation does include some misinterpretation but ultimately I think you'll see that it tends toward clarity and understanding. The author embarks on a personal and historical journey, examining the ways this dream has inspired numerous Westerners to seek out idyllic lives in faraway lands. Teeming with historical anecdotes and personal reflections, the book delves into themes of utopia, colonialism, and the ongoing struggle to define what paradise truly means.Wilensky-Lanford reflects on a variety of cultural touchpoints, including travel literature, art, and social movements, with a critical eye. The narrative transcends mere travelogue; it challenges readers to consider the implications of seeking paradise in the face of cultural displacement and fantasy. This thought-provoking work ultimately invites readers to reflect on their hopes and dreams in pursuit of a perfect life, while grounding those dreams in historical realities.Chapter 2 Paradise Lust by Brook Wilensky-Lanford Summary"Paradise Lust: Searching for the Good Life in Hawaii" by Brook Wilensky-Lanford is a compelling exploration of the allure and complexities of life in Hawaii, and how various groups throughout history have grappled with the concept of paradise. The book combines personal narrative with historical research, providing a unique lens through which to view Hawaii's cultural and environmental landscape. Summary: Wilensky-Lanford embarks on a journey to understand Hawaii's reputation as a paradise, a place that has attracted dreamers and seekers from across the globe. The narrative unfolds through the lens of various historical figures, including early missionaries, writers, and contemporary settlers, all of whom have contributed to the island's identity as a utopian space. The author delves into the stark contrasts between the idyllic image of Hawaii and the realities faced by its inhabitants, including issues of colonialism, environmental degradation, and cultural erosion. Through interviews and personal reflections, she paints a portrait of the conflicts between the romanticized vision of paradise and the actual day-to-day struggles of those living there. As Wilensky-Lanford navigates her own experiences in Hawaii, she reflects on her sense of belonging and the juxtaposition of her ideals against the backdrop of a place rich in complicated history. Ultimately, the book serves not only as a meditation on paradise but also as a critique of the human desire for an unattainable sense of perfection, urging readers to consider the costs associated with pursuing an idealized life. Happy Monday! Sam and Emma speak with Nathan J. Robinson, editor-in-chief of Current Affairs, to discuss his recent book The Myth of American Idealism: How U.S. Foreign Policy Endangers the World, co-authored with Noam Chomsky. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Mike Johnson's successful speakership vote, Pete Hegseth's nomination to Secretary of Defence, Biden's Offshore drilling order, NYC's congestion pricing, the Social Security Fairness Act, CFPB action, Biden's arms sales to Israel, the Washington Post's turmoil, and Musk's promise to brighten Twitter's algorithm heading into a second Trump presidency, before diving a little deeper into Rep. Johnson leadership in Congress. Nathan J. Robinson then joins, diving right into Chomsky's assessment of the rhetoric and justifications around US Foreign Policy among the political and media classes, which tend to lie on the spectrum of “the US is never wrong” to the idea of “noble mistake theory” which constantly seeks to justify US misdeeds behind supposedly moral causes, bringing Robinson to the meat of the discussion: the idea of Chomsky's “Mafia Doctrine” which posits that the exclusive internal consideration behind US Foreign Policy is the maintenance and expansion of US hegemony. Stepping back, Robinson walks through various examples from the post-WWII era of US hegemony, from their indifference to Kuwait's independence to their insistence on sticking in long-term losing wars (Vietnam, Iraq) to avoid losing face, with a particular dive into the diplomatic malpractice that led us into the Gulf War. After expanding on the concept of “US Interests” and the deep divide between the various interests that make up the US, Nathan, Sam, and Emma unpack the US' refusal to attempt any semblance of self-analysis, refusing to acknowledge how their maneuvers on the global stage put their “adversaries” in a precarious position while insisting on interpreting every move said adversaries take in response as directly offensive, before wrapping up the show with a discussion on the importance of engaged anti-war and anti-imperialist movements on the domestic level to achieve any semblance of pushback to this way of thinking. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma listen to Lindsay Graham's plea to rush Trump's cabinet confirmations, Tulsi Gabbard shows off her ability to praise cult leaders, and an UNRWA Officer gives her detailed account on the ongoing devastation facing Gaza in 2025. Relatedly, Blinken gives a vociferous defense of Israel, and an Israeli settler gives a vociferous defense of treating Palestinians as animals. The MR Crew also checks in on the DNC-sanctioned “influencer” class, Varat from Chicago checks in on Tim Pool's emotional stability, and Pat from New Jersey Checks in on Congestion pricing.
