SDCC 2026: Duncan Jones on Rogue Trooper

Comic Book Couples Counseling Podcast

This week, we're once again in the thick of San Diego Comic-Con International, chatting with filmmaker Duncan Jones about his upcoming animated adaptation of Rogue Trooper, based on the iconic 2000 AD character created by Gerry Finley-Day and Dave Gibbons. Amongst the pulsating exhibit hall, tucked inside the 2000 AD booth, we chat with Jones about his passion for Rogue Trooper, how it ties thematically into his other movies (Moon, Source Code, Warcraft), and why animation was the only medium that could satisfy his creative needs. Also, we enlist our friend Bryan Young (of B and B Movie Reviews) to detail his excruciating saga in the infamous Hall H line and whether his nearly 48 hours of waiting resulted in a satisfying Marvel Studios presentation. You've undoubtedly heard horror stories, but until you've been inside it, you can't understand the challenge and appeal of Hall H. We're grateful to receive Bryan Young's story of pure geek family. What is the value of meat? The question rattles throughout Rogue Trooper, Moon, and Hall H. When humanity is seen as disposable by our corporate overlords, we must make ourselves impossible to ignore and flaunt a raging self-worth. While Rogue Trooper begins its festival circuit, we await a release date. To keep up to date on the film, make sure you're following Duncan Jones on Bluesky. Purchase Rogue Trooper comics from your local comic book shop, or find them on the 2000 AD website. Vampire Snow White and Werewolf Belle must fight the evil queen, while exes-to-lovers, Sleeping Beauty and Alice, try to escape a Nightmare version of Wonderland. Kat and Phil at Lifeline Comics have been building a Kickstarter empire with their Mature Fairy Tale Universe for years…did we also mention they are queer? Well, now they are all colliding in a special Big 2-style event. Nothing will be the same. Head to Kickstarter for Fairy Tale Wars #1, which sees the popular series The Beast and Snow, Nightmare in Wonderland, and The Witches of Oz crossover for a first-of-its-kind comics event. I Love Apocalyptic Zombie Misfits! is the wild new original graphic novel from Doug Wagner and Daniel Hillyard, the twisted minds behind Plastic, Vinyl, Plush, and the current hit Image book, Narco. Imagine a post-apocalyptic world where Heaven and Hell are at war, a nerd wakes up trapped in the body of a supernatural slasher, and his only allies include a roller derby angel, a possessed truck...and immortal murder chickens. Critics are already calling it wildly creative, wonderfully weird, and an absolute blast. Back the Kickstarter for an oversized deluxe hardcover, exclusive editions, art prints, and even the Murder Chickens Card Game, available only during the campaign. If you love horror, dark comedy, and comics that break every rule, head to Kickstarter and search I Love Apocalyptic Zombie Misfits! before the campaign disappears! This August, the 2000 AD Sci-Fi Special is here to make it a nuclear Summer! This 48-page Summer Special features five self-contained stories featuring Judge Dredd, Strontium Dog, Judge Death and Stickleback – the King of Crime! Never read 2000 AD before? This is a great way to jump on board and try out The Galaxy's Greatest Comic. With a cover by Liam Sharp and stories from a galaxy of reality-warping creators, this is all-out sci-fi with an anarchic edge. And the best news is? It's available through Lunar – so you'll be able to order it through your LCS! It's the ultimate apocalyptic beach read – so make sure you pick up the 2000 AD Sci-Fi Special this month!

House of the Dragon Season 3 ended with Sunfyre back from the dead and Rhaenyra executing the High Septon inside his own sept, and Spider-Man: Brand New Day gave the MCU its darkest Jean Grey yet. Frank, Thomas, and Jonathan break down both, plus the Marvel Hall H panel from San Diego Comic-Con and why Ghost Rider got announced with nothing behind it. On the House of the Dragon side: the Episode 7 resurrection that flipped the board, Helaena's tapestry and what it was quietly spoiling all along, where the show splits from Fire and Blood on her death, why Rhaenyra was never built to sit on a throne in the first place, and a final score for the season from each of them. Then a full spoiler conversation on Spider-Man: Brand New Day covering Sadie Sink's Jean Grey and the road to Dark Phoenix, the Hulk and the Punisher as mirrors for where Peter Parker could end up, the ending that made a handshake hit harder than a kiss, and whether Marvel has its footing back going into Doomsday, Secret Wars, and X-Men. Network news and picks of the week close it out. 00:00 Intro: Three Weeks Off, Alaska, and Missing Comic-Con 03:11 San Diego Comic-Con and the Marvel Hall H Fallout 05:53 Project Hail Mary Is the Movie of the Year 07:02 House of the Dragon Season 3: Rhaenyra's Turn and the Finale 18:53 Sunfyre, Helaena's Tapestry, and Book vs Show Changes 25:02 Season 3 Final Thoughts and Scores 28:00 Spider-Man: Brand New Day Spoiler Talk 33:00 Sadie Sink's Jean Grey and the Road to Dark Phoenix 41:02 What It Means for the MCU: Doomsday, Secret Wars, and X-Men 50:16 Network News and Picks of the Week All news discussed comes from GeekFreaksPodcast.com. Send it in. We read listener questions and topic suggestions on air. Key Takeaways Rhaenyra spent three seasons trying to be her father and the finale is the moment she stops. Frank frames it as her Anakin-to-Vader turn, right down to killing the realm's holy man and walking back out to claim she is the savior. Episode 7 and the return of Sunfyre lands as the season's biggest swing. Jonathan calls it a genuine plot twist with no setup, and it resets who is actually holding power going into Season 4. Helaena's knitting was spoiling the show in plain sight. Her tapestry lays out everything she has seen, and nobody in the story looks at it until it is too late. Both Frank and Jonathan score Season 3 an eight, with the caveat that Episodes 4 through 6 drag badly. Thomas, who bailed on the season early, gets talked into going back and finishing it. Spider-Man: Brand New Day works as a character study more than a clean three-act movie. The guys argue it is structurally strange on purpose, closer to picking up a random issue mid-run than a typical MCU installment. Jean Grey's power set is used in a much more specific and much darker way than expected, which the guys read as deliberate setup for Professor X's mental blocks and the eventual Dark Phoenix story. Quotes "She's now in her Darth Vader era." (Frank) "She was never meant to actually sit on the Iron Throne. She was always meant to capture it." (Frank) "The dragon fire ripping through a city is going to kill the good and the bad alike. It's not justice. It's just suffering." (Jonathan) "So many parts of this shouldn't work. But it does." (Thomas, on Spider-Man: Brand New Day) "I can't believe how much relief I suddenly felt from a damn handshake." Message Dan and MikeWe're back with part two of our San Diego Comic-Con recap, picking up where we left off on day two and carrying through to our final thoughts on the whole experience. This time we get into the chaos of Hall H, including a wristband standoff that turned into a two-hour, half-mile trek around the building just to get denied entry — twice. We also break down the panels that delivered and the ones that didn't: Lanterns surprised us with how much footage HBO was willing to show, the Spaceballs panel gave us a genuinely fun hour with Josh Gad, Rick Moranis, and Daphne Zuniga, and Collider's Showrunners on Showrunning brought out heavy hitters like Greg Daniels and Damon Lindelof. On the flip side, the Simpsons panel turned out to be one of the biggest letdowns of the weekend, with no voice cast in sight — though the one clip they did show us, imagining a world where Homer and Marge never met, ended up being a genuine highlight. We also talk about a memorable, unplanned panel with Ashley Eckstein, our In-N-Out Burger verdict after years without a real hamburger, and the strange logistics failures that plagued the entire convention, from the trolley system to a parking garage that seemed built for a fraction of the actual crowd. Along the way we cover some of our favorite cosplay of the trip, a touching moment with Sergeant Slaughter in the autograph line, and the small personal wins that made the trip worth it, including meeting Judith O'Dea and catching wind of the Johnny Depp Ebenezer Scrooge reveal that had the internet buzzing all week.We close things out with an honest, no-holds-barred recommendation on whether Comic-Con is actually worth attending, plus a look ahead at the box office moment we're in right now, with the Odyssey and Spider-Man both performing well and Avengers on the horizon. It's a candid, occasionally chaotic wrap-up of a trip that gave us plenty to talk about.Follow us on Instagram, and catch us on YouTube, Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and wherever else you listen.Support the showOh Brother Podcast:Support the Show! This week on The Filmlosophers, Hosts Eddie and Spencer are joined by the ever-glorious Intern Manager/Managing Intern Amy for a massively packed episode discussing the latest in pop culture and a legendary Broadway hit hitting the big screen. The San Diego Comic-Con Aftermath Before the crew boards the train to the underworld, they unpack the massive, earth-shattering news that rocked their pop-culture hearts at last week's San Diego Comic-Con. With the dust settling from the ultimate nerd Mecca, Eddie, Spencer, and Amy unveil what hit them the hardest from the convention floor. The team geeks out over Marvel's historic Hall H presentation, buzzing over the massive announcements of Ryan Gosling joining the MCU as Ghost Rider and the highly anticipated confirmation of Black Panther 3. The trio also dives into the jaw-dropping Avengers: Doomsday trailer, dissecting Robert Downey Jr.'s terrifying debut as Victor Von Doom and what it means for the future of the cinematic universe. A Cinematic Journey to Hadestown Once the convention hype is unpacked, the team ventures far below to review their cinematic experience of the absolute box-office juggernaut, Hadestown: The Musical. The crew discusses the historic achievement of the professional live stage capture, which was filmed with the original Broadway cast in London and just shattered the theatrical record previously held by Hamilton. Eddie and Amy are Team Hadestown 100%, wholly celebrating the impeccable artistry, the breathtaking musicality of Anaïs Mitchell's score, and the phenomenal performances of stars like Reeve Carney and Eva Noblezada. However, things get a little heated as they try to understand Spencer's deep frustrations with the narrative execution of the century-old myth of Orpheus and Eurydice. While the entire table admires the sheer talent in every scene, Spencer reveals a few major reservations before he books his next ticket to ride this train again. Is this pro-shot a masterpiece of modern theater, or does the myth get lost in the music? It's time to raise a cup and find out! You can catch The Filmlosophers podcast now streaming on all major platforms!

X-Men ’97 Season 2 Since first blasting onto TV screens in 1992, the X-Men animated universe has been teaching us that being a mutant is hard, saving the world is harder, and finding a quiet weekend is apparently impossible. Fast-forward to 2026, and the beloved revival X-Men ’97 has continued the adventure for Season 2. This season sees the X-Men scattered across different eras as they attempt to find their way home while new threats emerge back in the 1990s. Dion, Jill and Quinny dive headfirst into X-Men ’97’s nostalgia mining mastery, featuring the voices of Ross Marquand, Jennifer Hale, Alison Sealy-Smith, Cal Dodd, Lenore Zann, and more. Is it a heroic return to form? Or is this a timeline worthy of Professor X’s headache? As if that wasn’t enough, we chat about the biggest announcements from San Diego Comic-Con 2026, including Marvel‘s latest reveals, the ongoing future of DC, and all the nerdy goodness emerging from Hall H. The episode also takes a moment to remember Bill Oddie, the beloved comedian, wildlife presenter, conservationist, and star of The Goodies, who sadly passed away at the age of 85. For many of us, he was as much a part of our television upbringing as Saturday morning cartoons and his passing is a huge loss to all Gen X (and adjacent) kids. So grab your yellow spandex, dust off your Cerebro helmet, and join Dion, Quinny, and Jill as they explore mutants, conventions, comedy legends, and whatever other items escaped from the Danger Room. Official Synopsis (Marvel): X-Men ’97 Season 2 continues with the heroic mutant team of X-Men, divided and thrown across different eras in time as they struggle to navigate their return home. Meanwhile, back in the 1990s, suspicious foes and new strains of mutant intolerance are on the rise in the wake of the X-Men’s absence. https://youtu.be/T39s6fvYpsI A thank you to all you brotherhood (or sisterhood!) of mutants crew and X-people who join in on the Twitch stream, each Tuesday night at 7:30pm AEST, Plus a special thank you to those Mutants whose only super power is their generosity, and have donated their danger room pay for this show. This week we're doing our annual SDCC download, and there is a lot to unpack. We start with Avengers: Doomsday, because obviously, and get into the very Dr. Doom-heavy footage from Hall H. From there we hop to Disney+'s Percy Jackson, which just dropped a season 3 teaser and a release date (November 20!) that has book readers buzzing about how accurate this season might actually be. Then we talking about Mike Flanagan's Carrie reboot — yes, with cell phones, yes, we have thoughts — landing on Prime October 7, plus Matthew Lillard's casting as the principal, which, honestly, correct choice. And because no Comic-Con recap is complete without a little discourse, we get into Kevin Feige comparing the Doctor Doom buildup to Thanos and why fans are very much not here for it. Rounding things out, we've got Spaceballs news (Rick Moranis showed UP, people), a surprisingly moving story about how fan campaigning got Coyote vs. Acme un-shelved and into actual theaters, and just an overall reminder that this fandom stuff still means something to people. We close things out with recs: Laura's hydrating her face with the Elf Holy Hydration moisturizer, Eric's deep in Star Trek mode with the Improvised Star Trek podcast (start on episode 85, "The Search for Sock"), and Pam wants you to buy local produce when you can to avoid the current explosive diarrhea outbreak sweeping the nation. Message Dan and MikeWe're back from our first San Diego Comic-Con with press credentials, and this episode kicks off a two-part recap of the entire experience. Part one covers our arrival, the scramble to find the convention center on San Diego's trolley system, and the reality check that comes with picking up press badges for the first time. We also take a detour to Seaport Village for tacos and a beer with a view of the harbor, then head north to UC San Diego for a surprise highlight of the trip: Shredding the Multiverse, a concert reimagining television and film scores from shows like Cobra Kai, Spider-Man, and The Penguin with a full orchestra and rock energy. From there we walk through preview night, our first real taste of the exhibit hall, complete with two-hour lines, an ocean of vendors, and a candid discussion about what press credentials do and don't actually get you at a con this size. We get into a few Comic-Con-brain moments (yes, we coin the term), some sibling bickering about San Diego weather, and a genuinely strange arcade cabinet encounter that turns into its own little subplot. The back half of the episode dives into two of our favorite panels from day one. First, a look at the upcoming Lucas Museum of Narrative Art, opening in Los Angeles this September, and why it's a celebration of storytelling and visual art far beyond just Star Wars. Then we sit in on Brad Bird's career retrospective panel, tracing his path from The Iron Giant and The Incredibles to Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol and his surprising, nearly two-hundred-episode history with The Simpsons. Bird also previews his new animated sci-fi noir series Ray Gun and drops a small but exciting update on the status of Incredibles 3.It's an exhausting, funny, occasionally chaotic first day, and we haven't even gotten to Hall H yet. That's coming in part two, along with days two and three of the convention. Thanks for riding along with us on our first Comic-Con as press, sore feet and all.Support the showOh Brother Podcast:Support the Show! Jim Hill and Dan Graney examine the Avengers: Doomsday poster everyone may have looked at wrong, including a nearly hidden Loki positioned at the center of the multiverse and a newly powered-up Thor. They also discuss Marvel Comics leaving New York for Burbank, Kevin Feige's apparent Spider-Man: Brand New Day spoiler, and the increasingly wild X-Men casting rumors ahead of San Diego Comic-Con. Plus, Dan challenges the online narrative surrounding Supergirl and explains why theatrical box office may no longer tell the whole story. HIGHLIGHTS • Marvel Comics prepares to leave New York City after nearly 90 years and relocate its publishing operation to Burbank. • Stephen Wacker takes over as Marvel editor-in-chief while C.B. Cebulski shifts his focus to manga and Asian publishing projects. • Loki may be hiding in plain sight at the exact center of the Avengers: Doomsday ensemble poster. • Thor's orange lightning could signal the arrival of the Odinforce and the MCU's most powerful version of the character yet. • Andy Park's final major Marvel Studios artwork carries an unexpectedly poignant Endgame connection. • Kevin Feige may have revealed Yelena Belova's surprise appearance in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. • X-Men casting rumors intensify ahead of Marvel Studios' Hall H presentation at San Diego Comic-Con. • Vision Quest gets an October release date, Élodie Yung returns as Elektra, and Nova reportedly evolves from a series into a feature film. • Supergirl, The Mandalorian and Grogu, and Masters of the Universe raise bigger questions about online negativity, streaming strategy, and how studios now measure success.
