Voice actor JP Karliak (Morph in X-Men '97, Gargamel and Razamel in Smurfs) joins us for a fascinating discussion about how nerdy media shapes our understanding of identity, community, and civic participation. As founder of Queer Vox, a nonprofit supporting LGBTQIA+ voice actors, and co-founder of NerdsVote, which works to get nerds involved in democracy, JP brings a unique perspective on how superhero stories and geek culture can serve as gateways to uncomfortable but necessary conversations about representation and social change.Key Discussion Points:How voice actors can use their "notable nerd" status to mobilize fan communities toward civic engagementWhy nerddom inherently connects to empathy and understanding otherness, particularly through franchises like X-MenWhat authentic casting means for LGBTQIA+ characters beyond performative diversityWhy seeking only comfort in entertainment prevents engagement with different perspectivesThe essential role of discomfort in growth and understandingJP brings depth and nuance to these topics through his experience voicing Morph, a non-binary shapeshifter in X-Men '97, while sharing insights about the voice acting industry and the importance of authentic representation both in front of and behind the microphone. The conversation weaves through representation, activism, and the power of storytelling to create change, ultimately highlighting how superhero narratives can serve as modern mythology that helps us process and progress through today's most challenging social issues.Guest Bio:JP Karliak is a veteran voice actor whose characters span animation, gaming, and anime. Notable roles include Morph in X-Men '97, Gargamel and Razamel in Smurfs (2025), Boss Baby in Netflix series, and the Joker in Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. In anime, he's known for voicing Kozo Fuyutsuki in Netflix's Neon Genesis Evangelion dub. His gaming credits include N. Tropy in Crash Bandicoot titles and Wolfgang in the Skylanders series. As founder of Queer Vox and co-founder of NerdsVote, JP actively works to create positive change in both the voiceover industry and civic engagement.Connect with JP:WebsiteInstagramQueer VoxNerdsVote**************************************************************************This episode is a production of Superhero Ethics, a The Ethical Panda Podcast and part of the TruStory FM Entertainment Podcast Network. The League are running security for a peace summit when an alien ship shows up in the sky above. Followed soon after by a Thanagarian warship! It seems that Hawkgirl was a double agent sent to Earth to scout things out, where she relayed intel back to Thanigar that Earth's defenses are no match for the Gordanians, a lizard like race apparently hell bent on conquering the universe! The Thanagar's leader, Hro Talek, offers to help by recommending they build a shield around the Earth. The people and the League work with the Thanagarians in a massive effort to construct the shield generator, but things are not as they seem. Batman discovers the Gordanians were dead long before they came to earth and it turns out that Hawkgirl is betrothed to Hro Talak, and he is there on a revenge mission. He wants to build a Hyperspace Bypass to get to the Gordanian home world and end the war. The trouble is, that the bypass will destroy Earth in the process. To their surprise, the League is countered with weapons built around their weaknessess, and they are easily defeated and put in a Thanagarian prison. Luckily Wonder Woman uses her wits to trick a guard allowing her to escape and free the others. They must hide in plain site by dressing as civilians to evade capture again. They work their way to the Batcave to make plans to fight back. Hawkgirl catches up to them feeling guilty for not knowing what her people were up to, and fills them in on the true plans. They must get to the base ship and shut off the forcefield protecting the generator. Only once it's down, can they take out the generator. Green Lantern and Hro battle over the controls and Hawkgirl begs Hro to find another way. It's an epic battle with a lot of emotions, and ultimately the generator is taken down. In a cinematic sequence, Batman decides there's only one way to destroy their base, and that's to pilot the Watchtower on a collision course with the generator. Thankfully Superman saves him before the crash. The Thanagarians are defeated and have no reason to stay, so they leave for home. But all is not back to normal as Hawkgirl's status as a League member is being voted on. Half the team doesn't trust her anymore, and before they can come to a decision, she decides to resign. It's a bitter sweet ending as she bids farewell to John and flies off into the sunset... In this video, we explore The New History of the DC Universe — DC's latest attempt to redefine its legacy for a new generation — and compare it to the classic History of the DC Universe series by Marv Wolfman and George Pérez. How does the new version reinterpret iconic moments like Crisis on Infinite Earths, the rise of the Justice League, and the evolution of heroes like Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman? Does it honor DC's past or rewrite it entirely?Join us as we dive deep into both versions, examining how each reflects the era it was created in — the post-Crisis optimism of the 1980s versus today's more fragmented, multiversal storytelling.Back Athena Goddess Of Thunder: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/-jtl/athena-goddess-of-thunder-issue-1Thank you so much for watching and be sure to share the stream! From Kylo Ren's scrapped Star Wars solo film and David Fincher's dark Star Wars vision to epic follow-ups like Alita: Battle Angel 2, The Amazing Spider-Man 3 with Andrew Garfield's Sinister Six showdown, and Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 4 featuring Vulture and Anne Hathaway's Black Cat— these abandoned movie sequels had killer plots, A-list talent, and game-changing concepts that got shelved for good (or bad) reasons. In this unmade movies deep dive, we break down Darren Aronofsky's gritty Batman: Year One, Neill Blomkamp's District 10, Dredd 2 with Judge Death, Edge of Tomorrow 2: Live Die Repeat and Repeat, the terrifying E.T. 2: Nocturnal Fears, Freddy vs. Jason vs. Ash, The Godfather Part IV with Leo DiCaprio as young Sonny, Gremlins 3 in Vegas, Joel Schumacher's Batman Unchained, the wild Jurassic Park 4 dino-human hybrids, Quentin Tarantino's Kill Bill Vol. 3, Man of Steel 2 with Brainiac and Supergirl, the original Matrix 4 pitch, The Nice Guys 2, Roger Rabbit 2: Who Discovered Roger Rabbit, Tim Burton's Batman 3, Tim Miller's Deadpool 2, David Fincher's World War Z 2, and Zack Snyder's Justice League sequels complete with Darkseid, Knightmare timelines, and a Bruce Kent epilogue! Everyone deserves a little cheer and hope during the holidays; even dare I say a little comfort and joy. In this holiday episode, the Justice Leage save 2 worlds about to collide. But afterwards they decide to enjoy some time off. Flash plays Santa, along with the help of the Ultra-Humanite, for a group of orphans in Central City. Their hearts are set on a DJ Rubber Duckie and Flash and Ultra-Humanite put aside their differences to make their wish come true. Flash even gives Ultra-Humanite a piece of his childhood to enjoy in prison. Green Lantern and Hawkgirl have fun playing in the snow of the ice planet. But Hawkgirl wants to celebrate. They fly out into the galaxy. She has a world where she is well known and celebrates like she does. Her idea of celebration is drinking and fighting. She and Green Lantern celebrate and have a bar fight with the aliens. All is well. Superman takes the lonely Martian Manhunter home to Smallville for Christmas. Clark's love of the holiday is clear and his parents welcome J'onn with open arms. Only after he sees and helps the people of the town celebrate does he realize he too can enjoy the season. This week on the Major Issues Podcast, Spooky Season continues as the hosts dive into DCeased — DC Comics' apocalyptic six-issue series from Tom Taylor, Trevor Hairsine, and Stefano Gaudiano. When a corrupted version of the Anti-Life Equation infects Earth through social media, the world's greatest heroes and villains are turned into mindless, murderous versions of themselves. As Superman, Wonder Woman, Batman, and the rest of the Justice League struggle to save what's left of humanity, the question becomes: can even gods survive the end of the world?
