Did you know Hong Kong used to be a hub for pirates? That factoid has long been part of the popular history for Hong Kong—and for Southern China broadly. For centuries, Chinese pirates raided merchants and coastal communities up and down the Chinese coast, taking advantage of weak imperial rule and safe havens like what's now present-day Vietnam. Robert Antony tells the story of pirates like Zheng Yi Sao in his recent book Outlaws of the Sea: Maritime Piracy in Modern China (Hong Kong UP, 2024) Before retiring in 2019, Robert Antony was distinguished professor at Guangzhou University and recently visiting scholar at the Institute for Advanced Studies in Princeton. Shoot us a Text.Episode #1009: Today we sit with COO of Matthews Auto Group Vincent Salvagni to discuss the question on every Dealer's mind; What should I be doing with my inventory level? As consumers rush to beat tariffs, Dealers are worried about overpaying for replacement inventory and getting stuck holding the bag when things normalize. We also talk about Nissan delaying production cuts at its Smyrna, TN plant and Carvana's approach to the tariff headwinds. Show Notes with links:Nissan's plans to cut a production shift at its Smyrna, TN plant have been reversed thanks to new U.S. tariffs on imported vehicles. The automaker is prioritizing domestic output to avoid hefty import duties.Nissan initially planned to end a shift at Smyrna as part of a 9,000-job global cut.Keeping U.S. production high avoids tariffs on Japanese-made Rogues, which made up over a third of 2024 U.S. Rogue sales.Workers had already been offered buyouts; Nissan hasn't confirmed how many accepted.“It could mean saving jobs or it could be hiring people,” said a Nissan spokesperson.Carvana is stepping into the tariff era with confidence, positioning itself to capture increased used-car demand as new vehicle prices rise. After turbulent years marked by overestimation and investor skepticism, the company has streamlined operations and could now benefit from changing consumer habits.New 25% tariffs on imported vehicles may steer price-conscious buyers to the used market.Analysts expect an initial bump in used-car sales, especially from buyers priced out of new models.Carvana has reined in costs, insourced inspections, and restructured debt, improving operational health.Despite holding $5.6B in debt, the company is now generating enough cash to begin self-financing.“We're in a much stronger position than we were 3–4 years ago,” said CFO Mark JenkinsJoin hosts Paul J Daly and Kyle Mountsier as they connect the dots across car dealerships, retail trends, emerging tech like AI, and cultural shifts—bringing clarity, speed, and people-first insight to automotive leaders navigating a rapidly changing industry.Get the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/

Thanks !” Caleb Cotter sent a photo: "Hi Marc, I just wanted to take a moment to thank you for featuring the Irish Lassies' music this year. You've introduced me to so many incredible artists, and I truly appreciate that! I've also been really enjoying your Dancing with Hobbits album—it's fantastic! You definitely nailed it with that project, and you should be incredibly proud of it. You've always encouraged us to send over recommendations, so I wanted to share one with you: My friend's band, The Mad Ferret from Edinburgh, UK. They're amazing, and I think you'd really enjoy their music. Here's one of my favorite tracks that I think you'll love. Also, the Lassies would like to send you something in the mail as a thank you. Could you please share an address where we can send it? Wishing you a wonderful New Year and thank you again for everything you do for the Celtic music community!” Patrick Rieger emailed photos: "Hi Marc, Some more celtic musicians from the family's renaissance festival season, this time the Pittsburgh Renaissance Festival. Pittsburgh is a small faire, but the musicians are still great. We could only spend one day there, so we didn't see them all. We did get to see The Reelin' Rogues, The Craic Show, Sarah the Harpist (Sarah Marie Mullen), and just as we were leaving at the end of the day, Magnus and Maggie. Despite the musicians and us seeing each other one or two times a year, we still get to be friends. Big smiles. Daniel from the Craic Show wanting to clink glasses at the Pirates Pub. Sarah and my wife Gayle got into a conversation about environmental issues.”

“If you want to create change, do it. Don't wait for permission.” In this episode of The RebelRebel Podcast, host Michael Dargie sits down with Rebecca Bratspies, a law professor, author, and environmental justice advocate, to explore the fascinating and often overlooked history of New York City's place names. Her book, Naming Gotham: The Villains, Rogues, and Heroes Behind New York Place Names, reveals the incredible (and sometimes shocking) stories behind the names of streets, bridges, and parks in NYC. This episode is sponsored by my new book BRANDJITSU, helping you find, shape, and share your story with the world. From the surprising origins of the Major Deegan Expressway to the dark past of Rikers Island, Rebecca takes us on a journey through power, politics, and the shaping of a city. She uncovers stories of forgotten heroes like Tadeusz Kosciuszko, who fought for freedom on two continents, and exposes figures like Richard Riker, whose “Kidnapping Club” sent free Black New Yorkers into slavery. Beyond history, Rebecca also dives into her environmental justice work, including the Environmental Justice Chronicles, a series of graphic novels that make legal and environmental issues accessible to everyone. She shares her passion for storytelling, how she breaks out of conventional academic roles, and why “staying in your lane” is overrated. This conversation is packed with history, social justice, and inspiration—perfect for rebels looking to challenge the status quo and make a difference. Cool Things Rebecca Says “You don't have to stay in your lane.”  “The segregation we see in cities today was created intentionally. If we want to solve it, we need to understand that history.” “Major Deegan was not the war hero I expected. He was a mid-level bureaucrat!”  “Rikers Island was named after a man who kidnapped Black New Yorkers into slavery. And it's still a jail today. That history matters.”  “If you want to create change, do it. Don't wait for permission.”  Episode Highlights Rebecca's journey to writing Naming Gotham and why NYC's street names reveal hidden stories. Major Deegan's surprising past – Not a war hero, but a bureaucrat! The dark history of Rikers Island and its connection to slavery. Tadeusz Kosciuszko: A Revolutionary War hero and anti-slavery advocate. Robert Moses: The man who shaped NYC—but at what cost? How place names reflect power and exclusion in urban planning. Rebecca's environmental justice work and how it intersects with her historical research. The Environmental Justice Chronicles: Using comics to make legal and environmental issues accessible. Why “staying in your lane” is a myth—and why you should follow your passions. Send us a textMy guest this week, Joseph Harrison, is a nurse practitioner who facilitates the creation of independent practices for other nurse practitioners through his company, Avail Health.Per his LinkedIn profile, Joseph states, “Weaving together many threads to help realize the quintuple aim of healthcare.” To be honest, I was unaware of this ambitious initiative before speaking with him, but he clearly and succinctly explained both our current successes and the areas where improvements can be made.I found it interesting to learn that before becoming a nurse practitioner, Joseph worked in the hospitality industry as a server and a teacher. Perhaps it's this background that enables him to be such an exceptional nurse practitioner. He forms personal connections with his patients, allowing them to take an active role in their care.I would also argue that this ability contributes to his success as an entrepreneur. Nurse practitioners often express a desire to provide excellent, person-centered care while also seeking time and financial freedom. Joseph truly listens to these needs and is working to make them a reality, one practice at a time.In the five-minute snippet: Barbarians, Rogues, and Druids, oh my! Is it a great movie? No. Is it good? Kinda. What's important, though, is that we are very funny and talented and have a good time making a meal of a very messy movie. We also talk about the importance of Pluto TV, the mini-series SAY NOTHING (2024) on Hulu, Disney+'s STAR WARS: SKELETON CREW (2024), the Paul Schrader-penned vetsploitation ROLLING THUNDER (1977), and TOKYO OLYMPIAD (1965). Dr. Simone Gold, Author of "I Do Not Consent" I spoke with Dr. Simone Gold about the assault on children that the medical community, the hospitals, and the pharmaceutical industry are mounting.  We also discussed her new film, which is entitled What is a Doctor? Dan Flourette, Rebels, Rogues, and Outlaws: A Pictorial History of WarRoom I had a wonderful visit with Dan Flourette, the wingman of Steve Bannon, and it turns out an exceptionally gifted photographer published a new book entitled Rebels, Rouges, and Outlaws. About the war room entourage and the contribution, it's making to the restoration of America, including notably some six members of that group featured in this new book who is going to be, we hope, members of the Trump 47 cabinet. Dr. David Wurmser, Senior Analyst for Middle East Affairs at the Center for Security Policy I discussed with Dr. David Wurmser a UN resolution that the United States seems poised to allow to be adopted by the UN Security Council in the near future as we speak. It could impose very, very punishing sanctions on Israel. If it fails to adopt an immediate, unconditional, and permanent ceasefire with Hamas, it would ensure that terrorist organizations survive and renew war at its convenience to the great judgment of Israel and our interests as well. The United States government should veto this resolution, not Enable its enactment.

When Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay summited Mount Everest in 1953, high-altitude climbing was only done by the most elite mountaineers. But that changed in the early 1990s, when veteran climbers began leading amateur clients up the world's tallest mountain for a hefty fee. Today, journalist Will Cockrell joins Host Cassie De Pecol to talk about the history of the Everest guiding industry – from the early Western-led companies to the Nepali-owned ventures today. Cockrell is the author of Everest, Inc.: The Renegades and Rogues who Built an Industry at the Top of the World.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
