Transplanting the Doughboys from one medium to another demands collaborators with a firm grasp on both worlds. Podcasters Mike Mitchell and Nick Wiger know their realm, but require a few comic book maniacs to hurl them confidently into the sequential playground. Enter writer Alex Firer and artist Fred C. Stressing (also, colorist Meg Casey). Not only did Firer and Stresing grow up stewing in comics, but they've spent the last several years working together on the Rick and Morty books from Oni Press. They bring with them a strong passion for Harvey Kurtzman, Grant Morrison, and Krazy Kat. They're equally pickled in Doughboys lore, and after a little back and forth with Mitch and Wiger, could decipher the podcast into the epic quest called Doughboys: The Comic Book - Mitch and Wiger Chew America - Crisis on Infinite Girths. Last week, we spoke with Mike Mitchell and Nick Wiger about how they found their way into a comic book, and this week, we're speaking with Alex Firer and Fred C. Stresing about how they helped make that wild fantasy a reality. Also, as a result of hosting the Harvey Awards at New York Comic Con last weekend, we're stewing in Harvey Kurtzman's world ourselves, and his influence is easily identified in the Doughboys Comic Book. It's a joy to discuss madcap comedy, especially the funny book variety, with these two. Make sure you're following the Doughboys on your favorite podcast app, or just click here. Follow Alex Firer on Blue Sky and Instagram. Follow Fred C. Stresing on Blue Sky and Instagram. You can purchase Doughboys: The Comic Book - Mitch and Wiger Chew America - Crisis on Infinite Girths on BeOurKids.com. Join hosts J.D. Barker, Christine Daigle, and Kevin Tumlinson as they discuss the week's entertainment news, including stories about the Frankfurt Book Fair, New York Comic Con, and the Pushkin job. Then, stick around for a chat with Thomas Olde Heuvelt! Thomas Olde Heuvelt is an international bestselling author from The Netherlands. His breakthrough novel HEX was published in over twenty-five countries and hailed as 'totally, brilliantly original' by Stephen King and as 'phenomenal, phenomenal' by film director Mike Flanagan. His follow-up novels Echo and Oracle have since seen global publication, the former boasts, according to the Guardian, 'possibly the most frightening prologue ever written', while the latter was judged by The New York Times to be his 'sharpest, most compelling work to date'.His newest novel, Darker Days, is a devastating modern take on the Faustian bargain. It will be published in the US with Harper Books and in the UK with Bantam in October 2025. Olde Heuvelt, whose last name in Dutch dialect means 'Old Hill', was the first translated author to win a Hugo Award, in 2015. He lives in the south of France with his partner and pet lizard.

On this week's episode, Cody kicks things off with an enthusiastic discussion about some of the exciting news emerging from the highly anticipated New York Comic-Con 2025. He shares with Joe the thrilling announcement regarding the much-celebrated return of Jessica Jones, a character that has garnered a loyal fanbase, as she will be portrayed once again by the talented actress Kristen Ritter in the upcoming season 2 of Daredevil: Born Again. This revival has sparked a wave of excitement among fans, who are eager to see how Jessica's character will evolve within the gritty narrative of Hell's Kitchen. Additionally, Cody reveals that there will be a new addition to the cast for this season: none other than Matthew Lillard, known for his diverse roles in both film and television, who will take on the character of Mr. Charles. This character is expected to serve as a formidable rival to Vincent D'Onofrio's iconic portrayal of Wilson Fisk, also known as Kingpin. The dynamic between these characters promises to add depth and intrigue to the unfolding storylines.Continuing the conversation, Cody expresses his enthusiasm about Edgar Wright's upcoming project, The Running Man, which has been generating buzz in the film community. He discusses the unique approach Wright is known for, particularly his ability to blend humor with action, and how this might redefine the classic narrative originally conceived by Stephen King. Cody's excitement is palpable as he transitions to a discussion about anime, specifically highlighting his anticipation for the new season of One-Punch Man. This leads to an engaging dialogue between the two about the intricacies of anime, including the often-controversial topic of filler episodes. They explore how filler can sometimes detract from the main storyline, yet also provide opportunities for character development and world-building, leading to a deeper appreciation of the medium. As the episode progresses, the conversation shifts to literature, with both Cody and Joe sharing insights about the books they are currently reading. Cody dives into a discussion about The End of the World as We Know It: New Tales of Stephen King's The Stand, a collection of short stories that expand upon the universe of King's iconic novel. He elaborates on how these new tales offer fresh perspectives and narratives that enrich the original story, and how they resonate with contemporary themes of survival and morality. Joe then shares his own literary journey, revealing that he has started reading the latest installment in the Robert Langdon series, titled The Secret of Secrets. This prompts a lively exchange about Dan Brown's distinctive writing style, his penchant for weaving intricate puzzles, and the thrill of uncovering hidden truths within historical contexts. To wrap up the episode, the guys delve into a discussion about the novel "S." by Doug Dorst and J.J. Abrams. They explore the innovative narrative structure of the book, which combines a story with margins filled with annotations, letters, and other ephemera that create a multi-layered reading experience. Cody and Joe contemplate the implications of such a format on storytelling and how it challenges traditional narratives, inviting readers to engage in a more interactive way. Their conversation reflects a shared appreciation for creativity in literature and the evolving nature of storytelling in both books and other media. Overall, this episode is packed with insights, excitement, and a celebration of the rich tapestry of storytelling across various platforms.Official Website: https://www.comesnaturallypodcast.comOfficial Merchandise: https://shop.spreadshirt.com/comes-naturally-podcast/iTunes: http://tinyurl.com/kqkgackFacebook: http://tinyurl.com/myovgm8Tumblr: http://tinyurl.com/m7a6mg9Twitter: @ComesNaturalPodYouTube: http://tiny.cc/5snxpy

The podcast crossover event no one was expecting is here. The Doughboys, Mike Mitchell and Nick Wiger, arrive on Comic Book Couples Counseling ready to examine their feelings and suss out why they've propelled their podcast life into comic book form. Collaborating with writer Alex Firer, artist Fred C. Stresing, and colorist Meg Casey, Mitch and Wiger boil down their obsession with fast food and chain restaurants into a delicious four-color stew. It's a six-issue series called Doughboys: The Comic Book - Mitch and Wiger Chew America - Crisis on Infinite Girths. Everything you need to know about the vibe is right there in the title. The book is comic book-y, and a Where's Waldoquest for Wednesday warriors, as well as longtime fans of the podcast. You can nab the first issue here. For ten years, Mitch and Wiger have met weekly to battle it out over Red Lobster, Steak n Shake, and Taco Bell, usually inviting fellow comedy maniacs like Jon Gabrus or Lauren Lapkus to weigh in. The Doughboys comic book operates in a similar fashion, but cranks everything to eleven. Demonic and heavenly forces are at play here, friends. We return from New York Comic Con with the perfect episode. We discuss with Mitch and Wiger what drew them to comics, what they've learned about themselves while spending years talking about food, and how insignificant you can feel when sitting in a football stadium or the New York Javits Center. Make sure you're following the Doughboys on your favorite podcast app, or just click here. You can also follow them on Blue Sky and Instagram. This Week's Sponsors Launching this October, it's the latest entry in IDW Publishing's Kei-Sei line of Godzilla comics: Starship Godzilla, a cosmic adventure.
