This week's expert, Hepatologist and Key Opinion Leader Scott Friedman, joins Roger to discuss advances in acceptance of gene therapy and knowledge in other areas of basic liver science. When discussing science, he pays particular attention to findings on the diversity of stellate cells and his interest in CAR-T as a therapy for liver disease. This conversation starts with Scott discussing gene therapy. Specifically, he applauds the idea that gene therapy is becoming accepted in many diseases after a faulty start years ago, due to an unfortunate patient death in a badly controlled trial. He comments that this acceptance has unique benefits in liver disease because the liver can regenerate so much faster and more efficiently than other organs. He mentions some of the rare liver diseases in which patients are benefiting from gene therapy, and notes that we now have gene therapies and early-stage trials to target PNPLA3 and other genes associated with MASH and MASH cirrhosis. Next, Scott discusses stellate cells, which he has discussed in earlier episodes of SurfingMASH. Science is increasingly demonstrating how many different types of heterogeneous stellate cells exist. As Scott puts it, these cells "come in many flavors," each of which plays a different role in cell generation or cell death. In fact, the specific therapeutic challenges that present themselves may vary as a patient moves along the pathway from F1 to F2 to F3 to F4. Further, we are learning that there may be several different forms of MASH to present differently at a cellular level. This makes tremendous sense, given that no one drug has proven successful in even a significant majority of patients yet. As the conversation winds down, Scott shares what he describes as a "sobering note" about the state of research funding in America in 2025. As he notes, there are certain kinds of applied and developmental research that private companies do well, but other kinds of basic research that only occur when funded in public and not-for-profit sectors. As a specific example, he cites CRISPR, initially funded publicly and now in the hands of biotech companies, which is used to treat a variety of diseases more effectively than they could have been treated before, if at all. He also comments that a poor early commercial decision slowed the development of statins.

He previously served as President of Fort Worth HR and was named a Top 40 Under 40 honoree by the Fort Worth Business Press, reflecting his commitment to impactful service and HR excellence. In this episode, Eric and Justin Dorsey discuss:The evolution of HR from a compliance function to a strategic driverWhy execution excellence is foundational to HR credibilityHow fractional HR can support growing businessesThe critical role of company culture in employee retentionAdvice for young HR professionals navigating their careersKey Takeaways:Strategic HR starts with operational excellence. You can't earn a strategic seat at the table without first delivering on the basics—payroll, benefits, compliance, and employee support must run smoothly. That's how credibility is built.Fractional HR is a flexible, cost-effective solution for small to mid-sized businesses. Whether it's interim leadership, project-based work, or an ongoing partnership, a fractional HR model provides expert guidance without the cost of a full-time hire.Culture must be intentional, not assumed. Leaders should be willing to assess and challenge their assumptions about what makes their workplace great. Employee feedback—like Best Place to Work surveys—can expose blind spots and create a path for real improvement.Execution trumps planning without follow-through. Even the best strategy won't matter without proper implementation. Break big initiatives into manageable, sequenced steps and ensure ownership is clear at every level.Build your career through curiosity and relationships. Young HR professionals should stay curious, take calculated risks, invest in their network, and never forget—it's not just about what you know, it's about the people you help and grow with along the way."Don't be afraid to take risks, be contagiously, consistently curious, and then also build your network." - Justin DorseyConnect with Justin Dorsey:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/justin-dorsey-sphr Email: justin@texasHRteam.com Connect with Eric Dyson: Website: https://90northllc.com/Phone: 940-248-4800Email: contact@90northllc.com LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/401kguy/ The information and content of this podcast is general in nature and is provided solely for educational and informational purposes. So excited to have Andy Archer with us today. He's a 27 year old Starting Pitcher for the Savannah Bananas. He tells us the journey through college, the dissapointment about the minor league draft, joining the workforce and then into how teaching a group of kids at Sunday School changed his life. As I talked with Andy, I put myself in his shoes and also thought about what his parents thought about the decisions he made in his life. -risks he took -surfing on lunch break -living a comfortable life vs living a life with purpose and using your God giving abilities -reading the Bible cover to cover -living away from all of his family and looking for ways to serve -how can you catch your kids imagination and be influenced by things that are good, true and beautiful Some questions to ponder: -when are times of life when someone can be depressed? -what do you do when you feel like your sin makes you not worthy of God's love? -what are some of the hardest words to say? Something I'm focused on is finding ways to have fun with my wife and daughters and also having fun while we are together. Whether we are playing sports, watching videos, doing houswork, going on an adventure day or just hanging out, it's important for me remember to have fun, laugh and connecting with my family. I wanted to record this podcast as a reminder for us dads to have FUN! Sometimes fun requires us to be uncomfortable. Andy talks about how he was below average dancer and one of the things he loves the most is the choreographed dancing that the Bananas do. He tells a cool story about doing the "Thunderstruck" dance. His story made me think about when I relax and am goofy with my family and let go of caring about being judged by other people. The Savannah Bananas are a lot of fun! Check them out in person with your family and on YouTube! Challenge: Have a conversation with one of your guy friends and read the same chapter of the Bible and discuss what each of you got out of it. Connect with Andy Archer and watch some cool videos on Instragram HERE Check out the Savannah Bananas HERE Join our FREE Facebook Group The Journey of a Christian Dad HERE

He was recently released from his elders quorum presidency and has served in several bishoprics, elders quorum presidencies, high councils, high priest group leaderships and Young Men presidencies (back when those were a thing), and a variety of other callings over the years. Frank did undergraduate and graduate work in Psychology and worked in television before starting a small, boutique, corporate communications firm. Most recently he has worked for a client in the healthcare payments space. Frank joined F3 in 2014 and has served in the national leadership in different capacities prior to taking over as Nant'an/CEO last year. Links F3 Nation Warrior Heart retreats Share your thoughts in the Leading Saints community Read the transcript of this podcast Get 14-day access to the Core Leader Library Highlights Frank shares his personal journey with F3, which began when he was encouraged by friends to join a workout group after facing health issues. He describes F3 as a community that not only promotes physical fitness but also fosters deep connections among men, encouraging them to support one another through challenges. The organization operates on five core principles: it is free, open to all men, conducted outdoors, peer-led, and concludes with a "circle of trust" where participants share personal struggles and support each other. Frank highlights the parallels between F3 and church leadership, particularly in how both rely on lay leadership and the importance of influence over authority. He discusses the decentralized nature of F3, where local groups operate independently while adhering to shared values, and emphasizes the transformative power of brotherhood and accountability in personal growth. Listen for insights on how church leaders, especially elders quorum presidents, can learn from and leverage F3 to enhance fellowship and support among men in their congregations, ultimately fostering a stronger sense of community and purpose. 04:03 - Frank Schwartz's Background 05:26 - What is F3? 07:33 - The Founding of F3 12:16 - Personal Journey to F3 16:35 - The Structure and Cadence of F3 Workouts 19:00 - Finding and Starting an F3 Group 21:30 - Leadership vs. Management in F3 25:07 - The Importance of Lay Leadership 30:14 - Starting Your Own F3 Group 36:23 - Inclusivity for All Fitness Levels 37:42 - Building Authentic Fellowship in F3 The award-winning Leading Saints Podcast is one of the top independent Latter-day Saints podcasts as part of nonprofit Leading Saints' mission to help Latter-day Saints be better prepared to lead.
