Dave Morrell is a Kimberley icon. Now, he won't like me saying that, but it's true.  Dave grew up on cattle stations between Fitzroy Crossing and Halls Creek in the 1960's, and returned to the Kimberley to set up the first vet practice in Broome. From operating on animals on his kitchen table under the light of a torch, to treating exotic animals from across the globe - there there isn't much he hasn't seen or done. He has been an instrumental part of the pastoral industry for over 40 years. As if being an extremely handy veterinarian is enough – Dave is a Brilliant bush poet. He recently released his first, and long awaited book, titled Johnny James and other verses. *** The livestock export industry's conference LIVEXchange is being held in Darwin in November 2022, after being postponed for 12 months due to COVID. One of its great strengths is being able to get together face to face, to network and socialise – and organisers are now hoping international delegates will be able to attend, as well as producers and other members of the supply chain from around the country. Welcome to the Cattle Station Classroom Podcast. In today's lesson we are going to be learning about Surgical spaying of beef cattle. Long-term contraception of cattle can benefit the welfare and production of animals where females cannot be segregated from males and in other, limited, circumstances. In extensive pastoral conditions, contraception enables cull females to survive and achieve marketable body condition by preventing the stress of mismanaged pregnancy, calving and lactation. To do this I'm going to be joined by Dr Dave Morrell. Dave is the founder and owner of Broome Cattle Vets, and has over 40 years' experience as a small, large and exotic animal vet. Dave actively participated in the Tuberculosis eradication campaign and is an active member of the Australian Cattle Vets and Northern Australia Biosecurity Surveillance network. In preparation for this episode, I used resources from the Australian Veterinary Association, Meat and Livestock Australia, and the Australian Animal Welfare Standards and Guidelines, all of which are linked in the show notes below. To celebrate what would have been John Lennon’s 80th birthday, we are pleased to welcome Dave Morrell. Beginning as a teen in the 1970s, he amassed such an impressive collection of Beatles memorabilia that when John Lennon heard about it, he promptly asked to meet him. This would begin a series of meetings where Dave would delight John with rare Beatles footage.   Morrell subsequently worked in promotions for several record labels, including Capitol. He not only got to work on a Lennon project, but on Paul McCartney’s Press to Play. We discuss Dave’s friendship with John as well as his latest book, Run-Out Groove: Inside Capitol's 1980s Hits & Stiffs.    Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/talkmoretalkvideocast Twitter: talkmoretalk1 Email: talkmoresolotalk@gmail.com Website: talkmoretalk.com
