My guest is Tom Segura, renowned comedian, writer, actor and director. We discuss the “how-to” of comedy writing and storytelling, and what the science of humor and the creative process reveal about human emotion and memory. We explore why surprise and the act of "saying the unspoken truth" activate the brain's reward circuits, as well as the subconscious mechanisms that shape our sense of what is funny. The episode also examines the bi-directional influence between comedy and cultural standards. It will interest anyone curious about the science of humor, the art of performance and emotional contagion. Read the episode show notes at hubermanlab.com. This week, Adam and Orion are joined by TMO fans Matt and Terry. In preparation for their trek to see Metallica take over Lane Stadium in Blacksburg, VA the boys dive into the setlist. Since Metallica has been playing a large variety of songs on this tour, there are a lot of questions to what unique setlist will be played for the rowdy fans of Virginia Tech Football. This is a mix of a fantasy setlist but using frequency data to curate and predict the perfect setlist. Tonight's episode is a full-throttle dive into classic rock greatness and hands-on guitar geekery! We kick things off with none other than David Lee Roth—Diamond Dave—returning to the stage at the M3 Rock Festival at the Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, Maryland! Roth brought the house down with a blazing set packed with Van Halen classics and fan favorites. Full Setlist: • Panama • Drop Dead Legs • You Really Got Me • Unchained • Dance the Night Away • Runnin' With the Devil • Mean Street • Atomic Punk • And the Cradle Will Rock… • Jamie's Cryin' • I'm the One • Everybody Wants Some!! • Romeo Delight • Hot for Teacher • Ain't Talkin' ‘Bout Love • Jump After that epic breakdown, we shifted gears to some '80s guitar nostalgia and gear talk. I gave my vintage Hondo Fame bass a deep clean—bringing back that showroom shine. Ron got technical and upgraded a Floyd Rose tremolo system itself, dialing it in for maximum performance. And I wrapped things up by changing the strings on my Firefly Ghost, a John 5-style Telecaster that's ready to scream. This episode is wall-to-wall rock history, hands-on gear upgrades, and pure guitar passion. #DavidLeeRoth #M3RockFestival #VanHalen #MerriweatherPostPavilion #LiveSetlist #HondoGuitars #FloydRose #GuitarUpgrades #FireflyGuitars #John5 #GuitarMods #GuitarTalk #RockLegends #VintageGuitars #GuitarGear #TalkingGuitars #JohnnyBeaneTV

Alle Links in den Shownotes. >> Black Country, New Road – Forever Howlong (Ninja Tune) Wir müssen reden. >> The Completers – The Completers (Yeah You!) Brasilianischer Post-Punk. >> Great Grandpa – Patience, Moonbeam (Run For Cover Records) Vom Schredder-Post-Rock zum schluffigen Country-Emo. The primary focus of this podcast episode revolves around the innovative functionalities of a music management tool, specifically designed to enhance live performance capabilities through real-time setlist adjustments. I elucidate how this tool allows musicians to effortlessly navigate their setlists via devices such as smartphones or tablets, thus circumventing the constraints of traditional methods that require extensive setup and preparation. Moreover, I discuss the ability to rearrange songs on-the-fly, thereby facilitating a more adaptive performance experience that caters to the dynamic nature of live shows. Additionally, we delve into the intricacies of managing song transitions and looping sections, which are essential for improvisation and audience engagement. Ultimately, this episode provides valuable insights into how technology can significantly streamline the performance process, allowing artists to focus on their creativity rather than logistical challenges.Takeaways: The integration of Ableton with mobile devices allows for unprecedented flexibility in managing set lists. Real-time rearrangement of a set list is a significant advancement for live performance dynamics. The ability to skip song sections with precision enhances the performance experience for both artists and audiences. Dynamic looping capabilities facilitate improvisation and audience interaction during live performances. Controlling the set list on the fly addresses significant logistical challenges faced during performances. The development of guide tracks that adapt during looping offers a groundbreaking solution to timing issues. Companies mentioned in this episode: Ableton Ableset Drake

Jasen Rauch of Breaking Benjamin joined Billboard's Behind the Setlist podcast for a wide-ranging interview about the band's touring life, its loyal fan base, picking songs for Breaking Benjamin concerts, the challenge of developing new rock acts in 2025, and the band's transition away from Hollywood Records. The group's latest song, "Awake," was licensed by the band through BMG, and Rauch says the band's upcoming album will also be released through BMG. "From our perspective, creatively, it allows us to make sure that we're okay signing off with some things," he says of the deal with BMG, "whether it be the timeline of how long it's taking us to create—because it's been a while since we put an album out, and that's that's all on us and our choice." Syrian clarinetist and composer Kinan Azmeh has been based here in New York for many years. His music is an organic mix of East and West, of classical composition, jazzy improvisation, and Near Eastern music traditions. He's played with the Silk Road Ensemble and lots of other groups large and small, but the one we see him with most often is his Arab-Jazz Quartet known as CityBand – all one word. It's a band where Azmeh's stirring and expressive clarinet meets Kyle Sanna's rustic guitar, soaring at times over the dynamic and volatile backdrop of John Hadfield's percussion and Josh Myers' bass. Along with some talk about his homeland of Syria, apricot trees, and (of course), soccer, Kinan Azmeh and CityBand play some of the music from their latest album, called Live In Berlin, in-studio. Set List: 1. Daraa 2. Jisreen 3. Wedding
Fresh off a Grammy win for Best Spoken Word Poetry Album for The Heart, The Mind, The Soul, Tarriona "Tank" Ball of the New Orleans group Tank and the Bangas joined Billboard's Behind the Setlist to talk about that Grammy win, the stories behind some of the album's songs, her excitement for performing at the upcoming New Orleans Jazz Festival and how her music got its mix of soul, R&B, hip hop and poetry. If you've ever felt disappointed by the sameness of music, if you fail to be surprised by the music fed to you on streaming services, you should give Tank and the Bangas a listen. We didn't use our usual recording setup for this episode because Jay was unable to join the interview, so please excuse's Glenn's less-than-pristine audio quality. #ScrubHopTalk Ep. 229 - The guys talk about how mad J was at Cotton regarding our upcoming concert setlist, and they determine that Cotton desperately needs therapy. Then we see a video of a guy trying to use a chocolate fountain with cheese and it goes horrifically wrong, both in terms of how the fountain works and J's reaction. We check out a video of a brawl gone wrong that results in a really unfortunate scenario for a guy on the receiving end of some love by a dog. @troxy_cotton @scrubhopking @bigtrox303 #ScrubHop #Cotton&Jneedcouplestherapy#thatsasadAmericanboy#itwasherdaughtersfaultthatIwasmountedbyadogScrub Hop Talk is a weekly show with JDirty, Big Trox, and Troxy Cotton. Nick Wheeler of The All-American Rejects talks to Behind the Setlist about hitting it big in the '00s, the slowdown in the '10s and the band's return to meaningful touring in the '20s (and their performance at the 2022 When We Were Young festival that got the ball rolling). The band recently released a cover of the 1997 Harvey Danger song "Flagpole Sitta" through independent Spin Records and, Wheeler says, is currently plotting more recorded music. Listen and learn about Wheeler's love of fine coffee and the time the band recorded a Beach Boys cover song that was never released.
