In this episode of the FitMIND FitBODY podcast, I chat with the energetic and inspiring Katherine Watson. Katherine shares her unique journey from growing up in England and moving to the remote town of Kununurra in Australia. Her story is full of adventure, starting from her early years exploring the red dirt landscapes of Western Australia. Katherine talks about her introduction to running and sports during her school years in Kununurra and later in Perth. She shares how her love for gymnastics and ballet transitioned into a passion for running. Katherine's journey wasn't easy, as she faced challenges like a severe spinal injury that changed her career path from dancing to joining the military as an air traffic controller. Despite these challenges, Katherine's determination to stay active led her to triathlons and eventually to running marathons. She shares her experience of running the City2Surf in Sydney and her eventual shift to trail running, which she found more engaging and enjoyable. Katherine emphasises the importance of community and finding joy in the journey, not just the destination. Tune in to hear Katherine's incredible journey, her insights on running, and her practical tips for beginners. Whether you're new to running or looking for inspiration, Katherine's story will motivate you to lace up your shoes and hit the trails. Katherine's website - https://www.positiveframepsychology.com/ Katherine's Running Tips: 1. Start Slow: Begin with a mix of walking and running. This helps build endurance gradually without overwhelming your body. 2. Enjoy the Process: Focus on the joy of running rather than setting strict goals. Enjoy the movement and the experience. 3. Listen to Your Body: Pay attention to how your body feels. If you need to slow down or walk, do so. 4. Don't Compare: Avoid comparing yourself to others. Everyone's running journey is unique. 5. Stay Motivated: Find what motivates you, whether it's setting small goals, exploring new routes, or running with friends and family. 6. Consistency is Key: Regular runs, even short ones, help build a habit and improve fitness over time. 7. Embrace the Community: Joining a running community can provide support and encouragement. 8. Adapt to Your Environment: Be flexible and adapt your running to different environments, whether it's trails or roads. 9. Recovery is Important: Take rest days and allow your body to recover, especially after long runs or races. 10. Celebrate Small Wins: Acknowledge and celebrate small achievements along your running journey. A couple of BIG favours: 1) please like and review this podcast so more people will discover it :) 2) come on the podcast and talk about your running journey and/or refer someone you'd love me to interview (whether you know them or not :) ) Lets not keep the power of running a secret any more! The Launch of the Pilbara Kimberley University Centre (PKUC) in Broome will help students in north-west Western Australia attain a tertiary education without having to leave their community. Assistant Minister for Education, Senator Anthony Chisholm said the new study hub will help support the education needs of students from Broome, as well as other communities in the Kimberley, such as Kununurra, Halls Creek and Fitzroy Crossing. “This new facility will allow more students, including First Nations students, to study closer to home, where they can receive support from the Hub's staff, their families, friends and communities,” Assistant Minister Chisholm said. “PKUC in Broome already supports 35 students, studying in areas including nursing, social work, education and medicine, with 20 per cent of these students identifying as First Nations.” The Pilbara Kimberley University Centres team has also supported nearly 300 students from the Pilbara and Kimberley regions of WA, since the Karratha and Port Hedland sites opened in 2020. Assistant Minister Chisholm said PKUC is making an important difference to supporting higher education in regional and remote Western Australia. The Australian Universities Accord Interim Report identified expanding the Regional University Study Hubs program as a priority, to provide more higher education opportunities to students in regional and remote communities. The Albanese Government is investing $66.9 million to double the number of University Study Hubs around Australia to make higher education more accessible. “We believe that every student deserves to have access to a world-class tertiary education no matter who they are and where they live,” Assistant Minister Chisholm said. “Young people from regional and remote Australia are almost half as likely to obtain a higher education degree compared to their peers living in cities. This program works to remove barriers for regional and remote students to access high-quality education opportunities.” This builds on the 34 existing Regional University Study Hubs currently operating across the country, with PKUC Broome the latest to open its doors. The Regional University Study Hubs program currently supports 3400 students, who are studying more than 1000 courses through more than 200 tertiary education providers across the country. More information about the Pilbara Kimberley University Centres can be found at: https://www.puc.edu.au/
Dr. Sarah Brett was raised in Perth, Australia and earned her veterinary degree from Murdoch University in 1986. After graduation, she spent time in a mixed animal practice in South West Western Australia. Afterwards, she moved north to Dongara for 3.5 years to work in a mixed practice and spent time working as a barmaid, sheep roustabout, and freight deliverer. She then took a three month locum position in Kununurra, a northern border town in the Kimberley, and hasn't left in the last 33 years! The practice is mixed but mostly small animal. They also have a satellite practice 100 km away. Dr. Brett has had a long-standing interest in wildlife medicine and does this as well. After learning the value of holistic medicine first-hand after some injuries, she uses homeopathy, Chinese herbal medicine, acupuncture, Tui Na, and nutritional supplements in her patients. She has lectured about the use of holistic medicine in treating wildlife at conferences around Australia. Please enjoy this conversation with Dr. Sarah Brett as we talk about her education, practice life, and her life outside of practice on a property with 800 Mango trees and a wonderful stone home. We also discuss her love of live music and belly dancing.

In epiosde 7 I am speaking with the powerhouse that is Mandy Gratzer. Mandy is a Perth based Acupuncturist who is passionate about helping new graduates enter the profession with knowledge, guidance and power. At the age of 18, she moved from Kununurra to Perth to study an Advanced Diploma of Traditional Chinese Medicine at the Perth Academy of Natural Therapies. After graduation Mandy promptly travelled to Hang Zhou, China where she completed an Internship under the supervision of numerous dual trained Doctors at the Hang Zhou Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine (and may have eaten a chicken foot or two!). This provided the best opportunity for bringing together the knowledge of the course in the most idyllic setting; laying the foundation for melding the theory and practice together. The Hang Zhou hospital integrates TCM and mainstream western medicine, allowing all interns the experience of working together for the greater good of the patient. As a result, this provides Mandy with the knowledge and experience to work holistically alongside standard Western health practices here in Australia. Upon completion, she moved to Darwin (her original home town), in order to set up a clinic in a town that she loved. After building a strong client base in Darwin, in 2007 an idea to share Chinese Medicine far and wide saw Mandy take her services to rural areas, developing regular clinics in Katherine & Kununurra. Those clinics ran for six years assisting 100's of rural residents to achieve better health outcomes otherwise not available to them. Mandy serves on the WA State Committee of the Australian Acupuncture & Chinese Medicine Association and has spent the past 12 months building a mentorship program to support the next generation of acupuncturists with a course designed to help guide them through the beginnings of practice, titled A Guide to Setting up Clinic. You can connect with Mandy either through her podcast "the acupuncturists Biz Hub" or her website: https://hello.acupuncturistsbizhub.com/

They called Kununurra in the Kimberley home, and while Frauke felt the pang of isolation, she had no idea of the heartache that lay ahead. Three years later, she lost her husband to suicide and found herself living on 1000 hectares of remote farmland with four children to raise. She suffered another cruel blow years later, when her son Peter also took his own life. Kiri is a 43-year-old registered nurse, professional dancer, mango farmer and mother of two girls 12 and 14. She resides in a small town called Kununurra, on Miriwoong country in the remote East Kimberly of Western Australia. Kiri was the chubby baby who turned into the even chubbier toddler, becoming the obese child who transitioned into the desperately dieting teenager and adult. At 13 years of age weighing 93kgms/205 pounds (172cms/ 5.7' tall), she embarked on her first diet- Weight-Watches and so began the lifelong battle of the diets and calorie restriction. Like many, she had tried it all, from low to high fat, low to high carb, vegetarian to keto and everything in between. Her highest weight was in 2008 at 110kgms/198 pounds and after the birth of her second child she made the commitment to take control of her weight once again. Years of restrictive diets and excessive exercise regimes, saw her maintain her weight around 75kgms/165 pounds, but as Kiri headed into mid age, years of restrictive diets and exercise along with a high cortisol lifestyle, meant weight management was becoming harder and less sustainable. Other ailments such as skin disorders, osteoarthritis and carpal tunnel were becoming more prominent and debilitating. In October 2020 she was discussing health issues to a good friend and a TFH FB group member. The friend directed her to read Fast Feast Repeat by Gin Stephens and The Fasting Hwy by Graeme Currie. Having always been invested in healthcare and deeply interested by science, she went on to devour these books and several more, having never looked back. Becoming Adipose adapted was a challenging process for Kiri. She started with 16:8 and white knuckled it for 3 months, watching her weight go up 3.5kgms/7.7 pounds in that time. Without the support of The Fasting Highway Facebook group, she is doubtful as to whether she would have made it through the first three months. Although she only lost 7kgms/15.5 pounds with IF, the inches and NSV are many. Freedom from demonizing food has helped heal her relationship with food and herself and gives her the extra time to work on being her best self. The Fasting Highway News Graeme is now available to have a private one on one coaching and mentoring session with you. He can help you with those burning questions. How to get started or overcome issues no matter what phase you are up to on your intermittent fasting journey. Get accountable and come and have a chat with Graeme who is vastly experienced in all areas of intermittent fasting and the mindset it takes. He also by experience can offer some real and practical advice around overcoming issues with sugar and highly processed food issues. Graeme has helped people from all over the world with his simple and practical approach to trouble shooting issues and has a great insight into the mindset into living a successful long term intermittent fasting lifestyle. Working to have a positive impact is one thing. Working to have positive impact at scale is another. Her interest in learning and sharing led her to organising two separate all Indigenous female teams to PNG (2013) and Zambia (2007) to share, where she was also the invited guest speaker on those occasions. As a descendant of the Jaru people, she is originally from Halls Creek but now lives on Miriwoong Gajerrong country in Kununurra, East Kimberley with her husband and teenage children. She feels strongly about creating social change and how women can influence the world for the better.Recommendations throughout this episode: www.iba.gov.auhttps://kimberleybirds.com.au/https://magandamakers.business/about/ Website: www.blackmagicwoman.com.auFollow us on Instagram - @blackmagicwomanpodcast The Black Magic Woman Podcast is hosted by Mundanara Bayles and is an uplifting conversational style program featuring mainly Aboriginal guests and explores issues of importance to Aboriginal people and communities. Scheduled to debut in April 2023, the Viking Saturn will spend her maiden season sailing itineraries in the Mediterranean and in Northern Europe. The traditional float out ceremony took place at Fincantieri's Ancona shipyard and is significant because it denotes a ship moving into its final stage of construction. The float out of the Viking Saturn began at approximately 11:00 a.m. local time when the Viking team cut a cord that signalled water to flow into the ship's building dock. Following a two-day process that will set the Viking Saturn afloat, she will then be moved to a nearby outfitting dock for final construction and interior build-out.Viking Saturn – Viking's ocean vessels have a gross tonnage of 47,800 tons, with 465 staterooms that can host 930 guests. The Viking Saturn will join the award-winning fleet of identical sister ships, which includes Viking Star, Viking Sea, Viking Sky, Viking Orion, Viking Jupiter, Viking Venus and Viking Mars. The Viking Neptune will be delivered in late 2022.Its Official – Authentic Gelato Experience at SeaItalian Chamber of Commerce Certifies Gelato Experience On Board Princess Ships as First to Offer the Authentic Confection Outside ItalyWith the start of summer, scooping up one of Italy's most famous desserts from Gelato onboard Discovery Princess, Enchanted Princess and Sky Princess just got a little sweeter. The Princess Cruises gelato shops have been designated as Ospitalità Italiana, and are the first and only locations to offer an authentic Italian gelato experience outside of Italy. The prestigious Ospitalità Italiana designation is issued by the Italian Chamber of Commerce committee, an organisation of the Italian government, and confirms that every step of the gelato-making process meets or exceeds a strict set of standards as approved by official Italian auditors and experts, who review the process on a yearly basis. Only gelato shops that attain outstanding quality status are awarded the official Ospitalità Italiana certification.Princess Cruises handcrafts its fresh gelato with Italian-certified ingredients and equipment each day in the pastry kitchens onboard the cruise line's three newest ships – Discovery Princess, Enchanted Princess and Sky Princess. Corporate pastry chef Eric Le Rouzic trained with the best Italian chefs at the Gelato Carpigiani University in Bologna and the Gelato Comprital Atheneum in Milano to master the art of making this heaven in a bowl. Princess uses top-of-line gelato machines by renowned manufacturer Carpigiani and the Gelato display cases were produced in Italy by expert craftsmen.Fun Fact – Gelato Isn't Ice CreamAccording to legend, the recipe for Gelato was popularised when architect Bernardo Buontalenti was asked to create a special confection for a member of the Medici noble family in the 16th century. Buontalenti mixed milk, eggs, sugar and extracts in a special machine surrounded by ice and salt, and egg cream-based gelato was born. While it's creamy, gelato has less butter fat and fewer calories. The authentic Italian ingredients are combined with Princess' freshly sourced fruit and is made each day with milk, not requiring the extra fat from cream that is needed in ice cream for a longer shelf life. As a result, a scoop of gelato is 80-100 calories and the sorbet or “fruit gelato” has no fat and is only 50-60 calories, with no dairy.Christening Ceremony in Barcelona for Costa ToscanaCosta Cruises celebrates in the port of Barcelona the christening ceremony of Costa Toscana, the newest Italian-flagged ship in the Costa Cruises fleet, that leads to the discovery of “the art of living the sea”.Godmother of Costa Toscana is Chanel, a young singer, actress and dancer who enjoyed great success in Spain and in all Europe after her exhibition during the 2022 Eurovison Song Contest. Fletcher Christian didn't want to leave it and mutinied (on the HMS Bounty) to stay there. Remote, tropical, romantic, and beautiful – it's one of the world's most aspirational places to visit: The Islands of Tahiti, otherwise known as French Polynesia. The Islands of Tahiti are best accessed via small ship – allowing effortless travel amongst some of French Polynesia's most storied and iconic 121 islands and atolls. Small ship cruise line Windstar Cruises simply knows it best, having sailed the longest of any operator in the region and celebrating 35 years of Tahitian sailings in 2022. It's also the only destination where the U.S.-based cruise line sails year-round, giving guests ample opportunity to plan a once-in-a-lifetime visit in any season. This October, there's double the chance. The 148-guest Wind Spirit, complete with sails built for the breezes of the South Pacific, is sailing around the Islands of Tahiti now, but in October, Windstar will move the all-suite, 312-guest Star Breeze to the region, increasing capacity with two yacht options to choose from. All-suite Star Breeze features newly transformed guest suites, two new restaurants, a new World Spa, an infinity pool, and more. Although without sails, Star Breeze is ideal for accessing the shallow lagoons that helped make the destination famous. Both Wind Spirit and Star Breeze feature Windstar's signature sports platform, opening up right off the back deck into crystal clear waters perfect for swimming, kayaking and paddle boarding . In February 2024, Star Breeze will move to Tahiti year-round in place of Wind Spirit.A-ROSA SENA completes maiden voyageOn 18 June 2022, the A-ROSA SENA departed from Cologne for her maiden voyage with her first guests on board. Prior to this, the ship was blessed in Düsseldorf by Deacon Michael Inden, as well as christened by Clara Eichler, daughter of A-ROSA CEO Jörg Eichler, in the presence of the management, the investors and the crew. Due to supply challenges, the first cruise started slightly later than initially planned, which meant that this ceremony took place in a small circle only. Thanks to the hybrid propulsion system, the first departure was accomplished with the help of electrical energy from the battery storage.Guests and crew were excited about the sustainable new ship: “A-ROSA SENA's design is truly unique on the river. Together with the spacious interior layout, she offers a completely new travel experience”, comments hotel manager Dennis Brenner. Captain Ulrich Schwalbe adds: “Thanks to the hybrid propulsion system and the exhaust gas purification filter, you don't notice any emissions on board and can just enjoy the pure cruising experience.” The E-Motion Ship recently received the “German Award for Sustainability Projects 2022” for her environmentally friendly technologies.Throughout the summer, the A-ROSA SENA offers 7-night voyages from Cologne via Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Dordrecht and Antwerp. Guests can disembark individually or discover the destinations through exclusive shore excursions organized by A-ROSA. Whether a gracht tour in Amsterdam, a visit to the miniature world Madurodam in Rotterdam, a canoe trip through the nature reserve Biesbosch or a culinary city tour through Antwerp – there is something for all tastes. The last day of the trip is a cruising day during which guests can enjoy everything the ship has to offer at their leisure: The large SPA-ROSA with sauna, whirlpool and massage room, the fitness area, two pools on the sun deck, the Kids Club for little guests and various restaurants and bars.Queensland Couple Embarks on Two Years Back-to-Back Cruising as Coral Princess Begins Historic Inaugural Cruise SeasonIn an amazing illustration of their passion for cruising, Brisbane couple, Jessica and Marty Ansen, embarked on an incredible two years of back-to-back cruising as Princess Cruises' Coral Princess, the first cruise ship home ported at the Brisbane International Cruise Terminal, began its first cruise season following the restart of the Australian cruise industry.Jessica and Marty Ansen have previously sailed on 31 cruises with Princess with 1,173 days at sea. The WA Government has appointed six members to its new Animal Welfare Advisory Committee. The panel was formed to give advice to the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development on animal welfare matters. Among the appointees is the CEO of the Kimberley Pilbara Cattlemen's Association Michael Sheehy and Joanna Williams who is on the board of the WA Meat Industry Authority. But WAFarmers president John Hassell says the appointment of representatives with affiliations to organisations like Animals' Angels Australia is concerning for agriculture. Agriculture minister, Alannah MacTiernan, has confirmed DPIRD, WA Health and WA Police are working together to find a solution to allow muster workers to enter through Kununurra, and head straight to cattle stations to complete their quarantine.
Delays to the border re-opening is starting to raise major concerns for the start of planting in the Order Valley. New South Wales grower Matthew Stott owns and manages Mambijim farm, on the outskirts of Kununurra. At this stage he's going to have to plant and irrigate almost 800 hectares of cotton on his own and he says that's impossible. One of the Kimberley's local melon growers is also thinking about cutting back production this season. He thinks any business struggling to find workers should be able to bring them into WA, whether they have specialist skills or not.
The state government is finally providing the agricultural sector some clarity around protocols to allow skilled seasonal workers into WA. The sector is worried the delayed re-opening of the WA border will make it impossible to get much needed overseas and interstate workers into the state to pick and pack crops and muster cattle. Agriculture minister Alannah MacTiernan says agricultural workers with specialist skills will be given exemptions to enter WA despite the extension of the state's hard border. Pastoral stations want the government to consider allowing seasonal workers to enter the state via Kununurra. The government will consider that option, but is reluctant due to the high number of unvaccinated indigenous communities in the region. President of the grains section with WAFarmers Mic Fels says the state government's measures to allow seasonal workers into the state are the best news he's heard in two years.
