The Battle of the Atlantic, the longest campaign of World War II, spanned from 1939 to 1945, primarily in the North Atlantic but extending to Arctic convoys and the Mediterranean. This conclusion episode recaps Allied resilience against German U-boats and surface raiders. Britain implemented early rationing and the "Dig for Victory" campaign, increasing food production and reducing import reliance. Key turning points included capturing the Enigma machine from U-110 in 1941, sinking U-boat aces, and U.S. adoption of convoys post-1941. Despite setbacks like Operation Torch diverting escorts in late 1942, commanders like Admiral Max Horton and sub-hunters Donald McIntyre and Frederick "Johnny" Walker turned the tide with aggressive tactics. Technological advances sealed Germany's fate: Allied Hedgehog mortars (far more effective than depth charges), radar, and air cover from B-24 Liberators closed the mid-Atlantic gap by May 1943, forcing U-boat retreats. German innovations like snorkels, Type XXI U-boats, and acoustic torpedoes (e.g., T5 Zaunkönig) arrived too late, yielding high losses (e.g., 39 U-boats for minimal gains in late 1943). In the Arctic, the Scharnhorst's defeat at North Cape secured Soviet supply lines. The episode details D-Day's naval arm (Operation Neptune): Over 6,000 vessels from eight navies, led by Admiral Bertram Ramsay, bombarded Normandy beaches with battleships like HMS Warspite and USS Texas. Despite mines and minor German torpedo boat attacks, it succeeded, ferrying 132,000 troops on June 6, 1944, with Mulberry harbors enabling logistics. The "Hunt for Tirpitz," the Bismarck's sister ship, highlights Allied obsession: Multiple failed raids (e.g., Operation Tungsten) culminated in Operation Catechism (November 1944), where RAF Lancasters dropped 12,000-pound Tallboy "earthquake" bombs, capsizing the "Lonely Queen of the North" and killing up to 1,200 crew. Losses were staggering: Allies lost 3,500 merchant ships (21.6 million tons), 175 warships, and ~7,200 sailors; Germany lost 783 U-boats, 47 warships, and 30,000 men. Submarines sank two-thirds of Allied tonnage, but superior Allied strategy, resources, and innovation prevailed, ensuring victory in this critical supply war.

Edwin Hubble gets the credit for discovering that the universe is expanding. But that finding was made possible by work done by Vesto Slipher. He was the first to measure the motions of distant galaxies – the key to Hubble’s discovery. Slipher was born 150 years ago today, in Mulberry, Indiana. He worked on the family farm, and developed an interest in astronomy. A college professor helped him get a job as an assistant at Lowell Observatory in Arizona, where he worked for the next five decades. Slipher studied what were called “spiral nebulae.” It wasn’t certain whether these pinwheels were motes of matter in the Milky Way, or “island universes” of stars outside the Milky Way. Slipher used a technique that splits an object’s light into its individual wavelengths. The object’s motion shifts those wavelengths. Objects that are moving away from us are shifted to longer, redder wavelengths. Slipher found that most of the spirals were moving away from us in a hurry. He suggested the objects were far outside the Milky Way. But he couldn’t prove it because he had no way to measure the distances. Hubble did measure the distances, proving that the spirals are separate galaxies. He then combined Slipher’s observations with his own to show that the farther a galaxy, the faster it was moving. Later, astronomers concluded that the universe is expanding – a finding made possible in large part by Vesto Slipher. Script by Damond Benningfield

Brian Mulberry believes we're not in an asset bubble for AI, but the capital expenditures could be, arguing that AI companies are showing profitability in their earnings reports. However, if anyone pulls their cash commitments, the market could get nervous. He also covers Fed policy, and says the market hasn't priced in the possibility of no cuts. Brian covers his takeaways from this week's bank earnings especially as fears around regional banks grow.======== Schwab Network ========Empowering every investor and trader, every market day. "Increase our faith" the disciples cry out (Luke 17:1-7)When we read the news, when we struggle with health diagnoses, when we worry about the next generation growing up, we feel overwhelmed and pray, like the disciples, "Increase our faith."In our series on What Matters, we reflect on the power of faith and our culture's need for faith to confront the challenges it faces.Unfortunately (fortunately, really) we cannot gain faith from Jesus. Rather, we recognize that it is not about what we have or don't have, but that all Jesus has and has given to us is sufficient. And so, we get to work, invited by Jesus, to use what little faith we have to move mulberry bushes! The artwork is "The Mulberry Tree" by Vincent Van Gogh, currently on display at the Norton Simon Museum.
Life, people, and even our own actions often don't go according to our expectations. When that happens, the result is often disappointment, resentment, or shame. In those moments, God calls us to forgive—not only others who have hurt us, but also ourselves when we fall short of who we hoped to be. Forgiveness is difficult and often counterintuitive because it requires surrendering all judgment to God—even our judgment of ourselves. But in doing so, we open ourselves to God's grace. And through His power, rather than our own strength, we become able to forgive others—freely and often. Most importantly, forgiveness is not just a command Jesus gave to His disciples; it is foundational to the Christian life. It is both an extension and an acceptance of Jesus' sacrifice on the cross. ----- Scripture: Luke 17: 1-10 Jesus[a] said to his disciples, ‘Occasions for stumbling are bound to come, but woe to anyone by whom they come! 2 It would be better for you if a millstone were hung around your neck and you were thrown into the sea than for you to cause one of these little ones to stumble. 3 Be on your guard! If another disciple[b] sins, you must rebuke the offender, and if there is repentance, you must forgive. 4 And if the same person sins against you seven times a day, and turns back to you seven times and says, “I repent”, you must forgive.' 5 The apostles said to the Lord, ‘Increase our faith!' 6 The Lord replied, ‘If you had faith the size of a[c] mustard seed, you could say to this mulberry tree, “Be uprooted and planted in the sea”, and it would obey you. 7 ‘Who among you would say to your slave who has just come in from ploughing or tending sheep in the field, “Come here at once and take your place at the table”? 8 Would you not rather say to him, “Prepare supper for me, put on your apron and serve me while I eat and drink; later you may eat and drink”? 9 Do you thank the slave for doing what was commanded? 10 So you also, when you have done all that you were ordered to do, say, “We are worthless slaves; we have done only what we ought to have done!”'

In this episode I go on a style journey with one of the UK's original and leading digital creators, Lydia Millen. I was drawn to interview Lydia as she focuses on the luxury space for her content creation, which, perhaps needless to say, is a space I have always loved. Her 15 year journey has seen her work with brand giants from Jo Malone to Hugo Boss and Tiffany…Lydia's commercial influence is hugely impressive and often unrivalled. She is influenced by the beauty of nature and seasonal living, and has amassed a global audience of over 3 million who respect and trust her authentic opinions and eye for industry-leading products and passion for timeless style that defies trends. Her journey has not always been straightforward and she has experienced her fair share of trolling but she is pragmatic about the fact that not everyone will love her content and perhaps in the early days she didn't fully know who she was, very few people do quite frankly, but she is clear now. We chat about how she didn't really understand the full impact of a good outfit on her wellbeing until Covid hit, when there was no reason to get dressed up as you weren't going anywhere but she realised the importance of taking real care with what she wears on a day to day basis is an investment in herself, it was less about other people…in her words she was “telling myself that I am worth dressing up for”…I SO love this sentiment… By her own admission there have been some dodgy style choices including choosing to have a full blonde mullet haircut as a teenager to impress her then boyfriend. Lydia is incredibly considered about her clothing choices and just one look at her feed shows a glorious and curated grid featuring a mainly neutral colour palette…saving strong colours for big moments…ie Ascot and special occasions… Its no secret that she has always loved bags and by her own admission was a big collector of well made (and expensive) bags. Her first designer bag was a Mulberry which she worked 3 jobs while at university to be able to afford. Many of us have those memories of saving for that first designer purchase…mine was a Dior bag, and it was probably the cheapest one in the range but my, it felt good to go into the immaculate dove grey store on Conduit Street and soak up every moment of making my selection, watch it being beautifully wrapped and walking out of the door swinging that carrier bag proudly for the rest of the afternoon in London… We bond over a mutual love and awe of Harris Tweed… the tradition, the craftsmanship and the local passion that still goes into creating it. She slightly surprised me with her Style Icon…but on reflection I fully understand why… I hope you enjoy this episode. Housing vouchers provide critical assistance to low-income renters, but roughly 40% of vouchers go unused, in part due to difficulty finding landlords to accept them. Vincent Reina shares findings from a pilot program that instead gives cash assistance directly to tenants.Abstract: This article examines a new rental assistance program in Philadelphia, called PHLHousing+, that disburses unconditional cash payments directly to tenants to eliminate their housing cost burden. The program is designed as a 2.5-year randomized controlled trial that aims to test the impact of direct- to-tenant cash assistance on household outcomes compared with traditional housing vouchers. The motivations for the program range from the need for more flexible tools that respond to the diverse needs of low-income renters to the desire for a robust evidence base on effective policies to improve household outcomes. The article also discusses the evolution of the idea behind PHLHousing+ before the COVID-19 pandemic through to its development, using knowledge obtained from upscaling local pandemic emergency rental assistance programs. Finally, the article describes the program's implementation, including participant enrollment, strategies to minimize benefits loss, and cash disbursement mechanisms. It reflects on the lessons learned throughout this process, such as the importance of flexible funding and a strong research-practice partnership. The goal is to provide guidance to those planning similar programs and inform local and national policy, especially on direct-to-tenant, cash-based housing assistance.Show notes:Reina, V., Fowle, M., Jaffee, S., Mulbry, R., & Fortenberry, M. Uneasiness in the market is “belied” by the strength in 2Q earnings, argues Brian Mulberry. “It's coming down to the haves and the have-nots” in this rate environment, he continues. “Volatility is the name of the game” in the second half of 2025 as economic data and earnings diverge, but he expects things to get “materially better” in 2026 after Fed rate cuts. He thinks earnings growth will accelerate into the “low double digits.”======== Schwab Network ========Empowering every investor and trader, every market day. AS THE JOURNEY BEGINS by George MillsI find myself as a single free man once again on a journey in search of a beautiful wildflower to have my beloved soul mate for life. I do know that God has created her for me to hold in the good time as well as the bad times. I begin to go down this old rugged dirt road we call life in search of this most beautiful wildflower. I find going on a journey, looking all over this world for her, and to this day have not found such a love to become my soul mate for life.George C. Mills was born in Jones County, Mississippi, and raised in the small community of Mulberry. Surrounded by family and friends who instilled in him the values of faith in God and the importance of hard work-where the simple rule was, "if you don't work, you don't eat"-he credits these lessons for shaping the man he is today. Growing up with two older brothers, two younger brothers, and two younger sisters, George began his education at Glade Elementary in Jones County before his family returned to Mulberry, where he completed his schooling at Clara High School. After finishing his education, he joined his home-town National Guard. While on this journey of life, George wrote several books such as "As The Journey Begins", "Looking Forward as the Journey Continues" and "any others such as "Clay's Battle Between Love and Lust", the highly anticipated sequel to "Clay Faces Gloria's Ultimatum". His journey continues with "Clay Battle Between True Love and Lust", the highly anticipated sequel to "Clay Faces Gloria's Ultimatum".https://www.amazon.com/As-Journey-Begins-George-Mills/dp/1642992402https://authorgeorgemills.comhttps://authorsperspectivepress.com
Brian Mulberry shares his team's defensive take on the market, citing interest rates as a major headwind for earnings growth. Despite the S&P 500's rally to 6200, Mulberry expects more volatility ahead. To navigate this environment, he favors high-quality, dividend-yielding stocks with strong balance sheets and diversified revenue streams, such as JPMorgan (JPM), BNY Mellon (BK), and Bank of America (BAC). Mulberry also likes consumer staples like Home Depot (HD) and Walmart (WMT), citing their ability to weather economic uncertainty and deliver steady, profitable growth.======== Schwab Network ========Empowering every investor and trader, every market day. Luxury doesn't always look like designer clothes, high heels, and a “dream” fashion job in NYC. Sometimes it looks more like quiet morning moments getting ready for a big day, hand-stitched embroidery on a vintage table linen, and barefoot commutes to a home office in a Spanish apartment. Christine Lindebak has always appreciated these small details. With her bridal loungewear brand, Lindy Lindy, she has leaned into these details even more. Each piece is crafted using vintage textiles that share a luxurious story of their own. In episode 119, hear why her lounge and sleepwear designs were a perfect fit for brides, how Christine's identity and lifestyle massively changed when she quit corporate, and the ways that Christine has considered scaling that align with her values. Christine Lindebak is a fashion industry veteran, having worked for Emilio Pucci, Mulberry, and Alexis Bittar. She is the founder of Lindy Lindy, creating bespoke homewear from vintage Spanish linens for brides seeking one-of-a-kind getting-ready attire. Christine is also the force behind Sewing and the City, selling fashion sewing patterns online and in shops around the globe and inspiring people of all ages to sew their own clothes. Brian Mulberry says we'll see if demand was really pulled forward by tariffs, and by how much, in the Retail Sales report later this week. He previews some retail earnings, expecting a “very strong” report from Walmart (WMT). He also thinks TJX Companies (TJX) will have a good report. He emphasizes that although the worst hasn't happened, we're still in a period of trade uncertainty for the next 90 days.======== Schwab Network ========Empowering every investor and trader, every market day.Subscribe to the Market Minute newsletter - https://schwabnetwork.com/subscribeDownload the iOS app - https://apps.apple.com/us/app/schwab-network/id1460719185Download the Amazon Fire Tv App - https://www.amazon.com/TD-Ameritrade-Network/dp/B07KRD76C7Watch on Sling - https://watch.sling.com/1/asset/191928615bd8d47686f94682aefaa007/watchWatch on Vizio - https://www.vizio.com/en/watchfreeplus-exploreWatch on DistroTV - https://www.distro.tv/live/schwab-network/Follow us on X – https://twitter.com/schwabnetworkFollow us on Facebook – https://www.facebook.com/schwabnetworkFollow us on LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/company/schwab-network/About Schwab Network - https://schwabnetwork.com/about

In this bonus episode of Gangland Wire, I follow up on my interview with Mafia historian Anthony DeStefano to discuss New York City's organized crime more. One of the most significant topics Anthony and I covered was the Alto Nights social club. This was not only the title, but also the central character in the recent Mafia film written by Goodfellas scribe Nicholas Pileggi, who starred Robert De Niro in dual roles. Gary sets the record straight on two pivotal New York crime hangouts—the Ravenite Social Club and the Alto Knights Social Club—which the media frequently confuse. The Ravenite at 247 Mulberry, tied to Carlo Gambino, played a crucial role in his rise to power after Albert Anastasia's assassination. Meanwhile, the Alto Knights Social Club, at 86 Kenmarre, emerged from the old Cafe Royale, a well-known bookmaking hub, solidifying its place in Genovese family history. Only three blocks separated these clubs, but they were miles apart in Mafia history. Listeners will hear about notorious gangsters who frequented the Alto Knights, including Vito Genovese, Michael Miranda, and infamous enforcer Buster Ardito. Through historical anecdotes and law enforcement surveillance records, this episode paints a vivid picture of mob life—its power struggles, criminal enterprises, and the relentless pursuit by federal authorities. Good to be back here in Studio Gangland Wire. A little bonus episode here. Hopefully, you just listened to or watched my interview with Anthony DeStefano, who had these books about Frank Costello and Vito Genovese, and from which Nick Pileggi researched to write his screenplay for the most recent movie that's just released, Alto Nights, It's a pretty interesting movie. We haven't seen a movie about the mob in the 50s since the 50s or the 60s, I don't think. And they talk about the Alto Knight Social Club. That's what this was all about, the Alto Knight Social Club. It was a Genovese social club. But what I've noticed is there's a lot of discussion about where was this club? And there's a whole school of thought, thanks to the New York Times or another New York newspaper, were obviously conflating the Ravenite Social Club and the Alto Knights Social Club. Two different clubs. So let's look at the Ravenite, which was at 247 Mulberry Street. And what the papers are saying, that the Alto Knights name was changed by Carlo Gambino when he inherited it from Albert Anastasia after he was killed. Barbershop Quartet, if you remember, murdered him in the Barbershare most famous mob photos ever, I think. Bosley Gambino changed it to the Raven Knights, Raven Knights, like, you know. [1:26] Knights with a sword and the raven, because he loved the Edgar Allan Poe poem so much, the one called the Raven, you know, the Raven, quote, the Raven nevermore. Now, it seems kind of weird that Gambino must have been a pretty erudite, sophisticated mob boss. If you read Edgar Allan Poe and poems, you know, I remember it because it's just so immensely popular. It got to, you know, quote the Raven nevermore. It's such a great line that, you know, you've heard of it. I don't think I ever read the whole thing. It's certainly not for fun, maybe in school.
