A key school safety bill mandates communication between districts about students with troubled histories, inspired by a Barrow County tragedy. Gwinnett-specific wins included property tax relief measures, annexation legislation for Lawrenceville and Mulberry, and homestead exemption bills for Norcross and Lilburn. In this bonus episode of Gangland Wire, I follow up on my interview with Mafia historian Anthony DeStefano to discuss New York City's organized crime more. One of the most significant topics Anthony and I covered was the Alto Nights social club. This was not only the title, but also the central character in the recent Mafia film written by Goodfellas scribe Nicholas Pileggi, who starred Robert De Niro in dual roles. Gary sets the record straight on two pivotal New York crime hangouts—the Ravenite Social Club and the Alto Knights Social Club—which the media frequently confuse. The Ravenite at 247 Mulberry, tied to Carlo Gambino, played a crucial role in his rise to power after Albert Anastasia's assassination. Meanwhile, the Alto Knights Social Club, at 86 Kenmarre, emerged from the old Cafe Royale, a well-known bookmaking hub, solidifying its place in Genovese family history. Only three blocks separated these clubs, but they were miles apart in Mafia history. Listeners will hear about notorious gangsters who frequented the Alto Knights, including Vito Genovese, Michael Miranda, and infamous enforcer Buster Ardito. Through historical anecdotes and law enforcement surveillance records, this episode paints a vivid picture of mob life—its power struggles, criminal enterprises, and the relentless pursuit by federal authorities. Good to be back here in Studio Gangland Wire. A little bonus episode here. Hopefully, you just listened to or watched my interview with Anthony DeStefano, who had these books about Frank Costello and Vito Genovese, and from which Nick Pileggi researched to write his screenplay for the most recent movie that's just released, Alto Nights, It's a pretty interesting movie. We haven't seen a movie about the mob in the 50s since the 50s or the 60s, I don't think. And they talk about the Alto Knight Social Club. That's what this was all about, the Alto Knight Social Club. It was a Genovese social club. But what I've noticed is there's a lot of discussion about where was this club? And there's a whole school of thought, thanks to the New York Times or another New York newspaper, were obviously conflating the Ravenite Social Club and the Alto Knights Social Club. Two different clubs. So let's look at the Ravenite, which was at 247 Mulberry Street. And what the papers are saying, that the Alto Knights name was changed by Carlo Gambino when he inherited it from Albert Anastasia after he was killed. Barbershop Quartet, if you remember, murdered him in the Barbershare most famous mob photos ever, I think. Bosley Gambino changed it to the Raven Knights, Raven Knights, like, you know. [1:26] Knights with a sword and the raven, because he loved the Edgar Allan Poe poem so much, the one called the Raven, you know, the Raven, quote, the Raven nevermore. Now, it seems kind of weird that Gambino must have been a pretty erudite, sophisticated mob boss. If you read Edgar Allan Poe and poems, you know, I remember it because it's just so immensely popular. It got to, you know, quote the Raven nevermore. It's such a great line that, you know, you've heard of it. I don't think I ever read the whole thing. It's certainly not for fun, maybe in school.

GDP Script/ Top Stories for February 18th Publish Date: February 18th From The BG AD Group Studio, Welcome to the Gwinnett Daily Post Podcast. Today is Tuesday, February 18th and Happy Birthday to John Travolta ***02.18.25 - BIRTHDAY – JOHN TRAVOLTA*** I’m Keith Ippolito and here are your top stories presented by KIA Mall of Georgia Mulberry looking to annex commercial properties on city's outskirts Andrew Young reflects on lessons from a life of service and partnerships Georgia Attorney General under fire over lawsuit targeting federal disability protections statute All of this and more is coming up on the Gwinnett Daily Post podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen daily and subscribe! Break 1: Kia MOG (07.14.22 KIA MOG) STORY 1: Mulberry looking to annex commercial properties on city's outskirts Mulberry, Gwinnett County's newest city, is pursuing legislation to annex over 100 mostly commercial land parcels, aiming for zoning control over key corridors like Hamilton Mill and Braselton Highway. Unlike Lawrenceville's residential-focused annexation plan, Mulberry's proposal, led by Mayor Michael Coker and State Sen. Clint Dixon, targets commercial centers like the Walmart at Hamilton Mill and Sardis Church Roads. The annexation, outlined in Senate Bill 139, won’t significantly impact Mulberry’s population and doesn’t require a referendum, focusing instead on managing future development and zoning. STORY 2: Andrew Young reflects on lessons from a life of service and partnerships Andrew Young, at 92, continues to inspire as a Civil Rights leader, former Atlanta mayor, and U.N. ambassador. His life and Atlanta’s growth are celebrated in an exhibit at the Lawrenceville Arts Center through March 31. During a fireside chat, Young shared stories of regional cooperation, advice from his father—“Don’t get mad, get smart”—and his resilience during a 1964 Civil Rights march attack. Reflecting on today’s polarized politics, he emphasized patience, collaboration, and focusing on helping others as keys to progress and democracy. STORY 3: Georgia Attorney General under fire over lawsuit targeting federal disability protections statute Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr faces criticism from lawmakers and disability advocates over a lawsuit targeting Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, which protects individuals with disabilities from discrimination. Carr’s office claims the lawsuit only challenges a Biden-era rule adding "gender dysphoria" as a protected disability, but critics argue it seeks to declare Section 504 unconstitutional, jeopardizing broader protections. Families fear this could lead to attacks on other laws like IDEA, which supports students with disabilities. Advocates stress the importance of accommodations for education and independence, urging Carr to withdraw from the lawsuit to protect these vital protections. Despite struggles, the brewery has thrived in event hosting and community support, celebrating its 5th anniversary and securing a new distributor. Co-owner Wayne Baxter remains optimistic, citing recent successes and plans to expand into distilled spirits once equipment is repaired. Alongside fundraising, Baxter is seeking new investors to help cover back debt and ensure the brewery’s future. STORY 5: Gwinnett's Overstory Rooftop Bar To Host Exclusive Código Tequila Dinner Overstory Rooftop Bar at the Westin Atlanta Gwinnett will host a special four-course dinner paired with Código 1530 Tequila on Thursday, Feb. 27, at 6 p.m. The event features Amazonian-inspired dishes like Fosforera seafood soup, Chica Morada Short Ribs, and Chocolate Dreams Cake, designed to complement the tequila’s flavors. Recorded: December 10th, Melbourne. I look around and I see a man out the front of the cafe in a pair of high-mileage running shoes and I think to myself “I wonder if he runs.” I walk the same street most mornings, always passing the same Mulberry tree to see if there are any ripe berries for me to pick. I smile at the woman who walks past it at the same time and say “We need to get a ladder, all the good ones are at the top.” It makes me think of the wild blackberries in Portugal and Tasmania and how they're the perfect ‘pick-me-up' when I'm on a long run. I put my music in and debate with myself if I should listen to the world around me or to a curated “chill-house-cloudy-morning” playlist. I conclude there is no right answer, there never really is. Most of the time, I'm out walking in my running shoes. If my shoes had feelings, I'm sure they'd smile when I went running I take them running. What about the days when running shoes were called “Sand shoes” or “Sneakers” or “Tennis shoes”? I never played tennis in my running shoes but now that I don't own tennis shoes, I suppose I'd have no other choice. Shredding the sole and tipping my tendons onto the edge of oblivion. Every-time I see another runner across the street, I smile. I love to see people embrace an activity and a practice that I enjoy so much. I am so curious what there routine was before they left the house and what they said to their partner, house-mate, or pet when they returned home. A lot to think about and not much at all. Guest: Joe Westood Poem: "Results aren't everything, indeed they'd better not be because results always come later - and later is always too late."

Mulberry, Gwinnett's newest city, will elect its first leaders. Voters will also decide on a 30-year transit sales tax and constitutional amendments. Break 1: KIA MOG (07.14.22 KIA MOG) STORY 1: Gwinnett Suing State and Legislators To Stop City Of Mulberry's Formation The new city of Mulberry is embroiled in a legal battle with Gwinnett County over its right to exist. Despite voters approving Mulberry's creation in May, the county is suing to halt its establishment, claiming the referendum misled voters by promising no city property taxes. The county argues this violates the Georgia Constitution, as cities must have the power to levy taxes. The lawsuit also challenges provisions in Mulberry's charter regarding service provision and zoning. Despite previous failed attempts to stop Mulberry, county officials continue their legal fight, while Mulberry's supporters defend the city's charter and its legality. STORY 2: New course in GGC's School of Education highlights social emotional learning At Georgia Gwinnett College, the School of Education has introduced a new course on social emotional learning (SEL) to enhance future teachers' impact in the classroom. This one-credit course covers SEL competencies like self-awareness, self-management, and responsible decision-making, equipping teachers with skills to help students communicate and manage emotions effectively. Dr. Kinga Varga-Dobai highlights the course's role in preparing teachers for diverse learning environments and preventing bullying. Students like Stephanie Waddell and Chasiti Wade find the course beneficial for managing stress and understanding student needs, fostering a supportive classroom environment. STORY 3: Georgia Tech Rewards Archer Grad Chad Alexander with Scholarship Georgia Tech's football coaches awarded a scholarship to Chad Alexander, a sophomore running back and Archer High School graduate, during practice on Tuesday. As a true freshman walk-on last season, Alexander played in nine games, primarily on special teams, making three tackles and recovering a fumble. This season, he's contributed as a running back with 26 carries for 141 yards, including notable performances against Florida State and Duke. Originally committed to Army, Alexander switched to Georgia Tech, where he's now making a significant impact. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows.
