In this episode of the Econ Dev Show, Dane Carlson sits down with Barry Broome, President and CEO of the Greater Sacramento Economic Council. Dane and Barry explore Sacramento's remarkable economic transformation. Barry highlights how Sacramento has leveraged its strategic location 72 miles east of San Francisco to become one of America's premier second-tier markets, emerging as a semiconductor hub while diversifying into clean tech and agricultural research sectors. Throughout the conversation, Barry shares his data-driven approach to economic development, his passion for working with underdog cities, and the challenges he overcame to build community trust and create a thriving economic ecosystem in California's capital region. Barry shares insights on economic development, leadership, and the importance of data-driven decisions in driving regional growth. The episode also covers his personal background, emphasizing Barry's passion for economic development in underdog cities and his experiences in navigating and overcoming initial challenges to build a thriving community. Diversify your economic base beyond traditional anchors; Sacramento moved beyond government dependence to semiconductors, clean tech, and agricultural research. Position your community as a second-tier market alternative to expensive primary markets, offering similar talent and infrastructure at better cost basis. Use data-driven decision making to guide your economic development strategy and demonstrate measurable results to stakeholders. Build strong board governance early; invest time in assembling committed leaders who can provide stability and strategic direction. Target emerging sectors where your region has natural advantages; Sacramento capitalized on its research universities and proximity to Silicon Valley for semiconductor development. Develop compelling narratives around your community's diversity and quality of life as competitive advantages for business attraction. Address infrastructure and utilities proactively as foundational elements for sector-specific development strategies. Embrace your role as an "underdog city champion"; sometimes the most rewarding opportunities are in communities others overlook. Focus on long-term relationship building and community trust, understanding that transformational economic development takes years to achieve and sustain. Special Guest: Barry Broome.

Just 45 minutes from Brisbane's CBD, this 50-acre property offers lakefront camping with direct water access, provided kayaks and paddleboards, and thoughtful amenities including a playground, games area, and campfire pits. At around $35 per night, it's a bargain escape that doesn't require a long journey. The highlight of our episode is our conversation with Harry Fisher from Fire to Fork. His story of transitioning from corporate finance to Australia's premier campfire cooking expert during COVID lockdowns is nothing short of inspiring. This episode might just spark your next great adventure. Listen now and join us next week as we prepare for the ultimate test – K'gari (Fraser Island)!
Warning: This episode contains mature themes and is not suitable for young ears.In today's powerful & raw episode, we're joined by Josh Broome, a man whose life journey is nothing short of miraculous. From a childhood marked by fatherlessness and a desperate search for identity, to the dark spiral of the porn industry, to a radical transformation through the grace of Jesus Christ—Josh's story will leave you speechless, inspired, & filled with hope.Josh was born to a teenage mother and grew up without a consistent father figure, always feeling like he needed to prove his worth. After moving to LA to pursue acting, he was pulled into the porn industry after a single video destroyed his mainstream career. Over time, he starred in over 1,000 adult films, made over $1 million, and even won an award for Performer of the Year. Yet despite his “success,” he battled crippling depression, identity loss, and suicidal thoughts. In 2013, at his lowest moment, a simple conversation altered the course of his life. Josh walked away from porn, returned home, became a Christian, and slowly began rebuilding. In 2022, he graduated from Liberty University, and today he is the Executive Director of Walkworthy with the AACC, a husband of 9 years, a father of 4 boys, and a leading voice against pornography and for men's identity in Christ. In this episode, we don't dive deep into the explicit details of the porn industry—we focus on something far more important: what led him there and how grace brought him out. We explore the loss and recovery of identity, the restoration process through Jesus, and the truth about how pornography damages both those in it and those who consume it.

Most conversations about AI in the workplace get stuck on the surface - job loss fears, tech hype, and hand-wringing about what's next. But in this episode, we flip the script. What if AI itself isn't the problem? What if the real story is how organizations introduce, structure, and integrate it into the human fabric of work?Jeremy Broome, Global Head of Talent at Visa, shares how his team navigates AI with a surprisingly optimistic and deeply human approach. From scenario-based workforce planning to AI-powered feedback loops in sales training, Jeremy outlines how Visa empowers employees to experiment safely, learn organically, and ask better questions rather than just seek faster answers. Along the way, he introduces a simple but powerful framework, “one-way doors vs. two-way doors”, for evaluating risk, making bolder moves, and learning without losing trust. This conversation isn't just about tech adoption. It's about how thoughtful design, cultural muscle, and a focus on community can transform fear into fluency and uncertainty into innovation. Whether you're starting your AI journey or stuck in the middle of one, this episode shows you what people-first AI looks like. For many remote and rural country kids, the dream of one day becoming a Doctor is just that. A dream. Because the challenges of vast distances to school and study, a lack of mentors and the often-daunting University entry pathways can all seem insurmountable. But the founder of the Boots to Scrubs scholarship and mentoring program for young rural women, RN and fifth year medical student Chloe Campbell, is keen to change this view. As a remote, rural woman who also happens to be dyslexic, Chloe is on a mission to inspire more country kids to consider a pathway into medicine, nursing or allied health - and she's leading by example. Having just returned from a life-changing one month placement with the RFDS in Broome, WA, Chloe says the title of 'Flying Doc' is now one she's keen to pursue.***Thanks so much for listening to this episode of the Flying Doctor Podcast. Justin and Dan break down Auburn's Final Four loss to Florida. The guys look at what changed between the first half and the second half for the Tigers and how Walter Clayton Jr. felt virtually unstoppable for most of the game. They talk about fatigue playing a role in the performance, along with the cooled-off 3-point shooting and the injuries to Johni Broome toward the end of the NCAA Tournament. Toward the middle of the show, the guys look at all of the outgoing seniors on this season's team and talk about their journeys in this historic season. Justin makes a point about Broome's GOAT status. Dan shares his thoughts on Dylan Cardwell's March Madness run and how it will go down in history. After talking about Auburn basketball's potential returners — including Tahaad Pettiford — and the new pickup of Big 12 leading scorer Keyshawn Hall, they close with a large list of thank yous and shoutouts. The episode ends with a discussion of jinxes and, of course, food. Walter Clayton scored 34 points with five 3-pointers, giving Florida the Final Four win over SEC rival Auburn 79-73 in the Final Four on Saturday night. Chad Baker-Mazara, with his left hand partially wrapped because of a thumb issue, led Auburn with 18 points and four 3-pointers. Johni Broome finished with 15 points on 6-of-14 shooting and had seven rebounds, with only three points after halftime. Broome was hunched over even before the final buzzer, and then was surrounded by cameras to capture his reaction. He eventually stood up to shake hands, then walked off the court with his eyes red from crying, pulling up his jersey to wipe his face as cameras continued to follow his exit. Truly a historic season for this Auburn program. Vince Wolfram and Jojo Cavanagh are in San Antonio to cover this team, this game, and the season Auburn basketball just put a bow on.

Justin and Dan start the show by breaking down Johni Broome's season-best performance in Auburn's 12-point win over Georgia at home. They discuss the Broome vs. Flagg debate in the National Player of the Year race and dissect what was a virtually perfect second half to spark the Tigers' offense to elite efficiency. The guys also talk about all the similarities between Auburn's win over Georgia and the win over Arkansas this week, starting with the game flow and the lack of outside shooting inside Neville Arena. Justin shares why the Tigers' second-half defense shouldn't be cause for concern. Dan highlights the Turtle Hudson minutes. After shouting out some non-Observer sports that are standing out for Auburn in recent days, the guys take a look around the rest of SEC basketball's Saturday action and set the stage for the final two weeks. They preview Auburn's rematch against Ole Miss on Wednesday night and give some Grubserver thoughts to close it out.If you're receiving this free podcast episode and would like to upgrade to a paid subscription that gives you access to all stories and premium podcast episodes, subscribe using the button below or clicking this link.Follow Dan (@dnpck) and Justin (@JFergusonAU) on Twitter.Photo Credit: Zach Bland/Auburn Tigers This is a public episode.
