The vast beauty of America's national parks beckons throughout the seasons, but knowing exactly when to visit each one can transform a good trip into an unforgettable adventure. In this captivating episode, we welcome extraordinary globetrotter Jennifer Broome, who recently conquered Mount Kilimanjaro's 19,341-foot summit and has visited over 250 National Park Service units across the country.Jennifer unveils the hidden treasures of springtime park visits, starting with Colorado's Great Sand Dunes National Park, where a rare "surge flow" phenomenon creates backward-flowing ripples in Medano Creek during May and early June. She transports us to Dry Tortugas National Park, 70 miles off Key West, where seaplane rides offer glimpses of marine life en route to Fort Jefferson—the largest masonry structure in the Western Hemisphere. Our journey continues through Hawaii Volcanoes National Park's Chain of Craters Road, where visitors can experience everything from active volcanic landscapes to ancient Hawaiian petroglyphs along the jagged coastline. Jennifer also shares her unforgettable solo hike through California's lesser-known Pinnacles National Park, where she witnessed endangered California condors soaring overhead—a magical moment made possible by visiting during the quieter spring season.Beyond these destinations, Jennifer offers practical wisdom for maximizing spring park visits: avoid spring break crowds, consider weekday visits, pack appropriate layers for unpredictable weather, and don't miss Utah's "Mighty Five" parks in April when conditions are ideal. Her stories remind us that our national parks offer not just scenery, but moments of profound connection with nature that can only be experienced firsthand.Whether you're planning your next outdoor adventure or simply dreaming of America's natural wonders, this episode provides the perfect guide to experiencing our national parks at their springtime best. Why are more families choosing to live with two, three, or even four generations under one roof? Rising rent, home prices, and living costs can make sharing a home a smart way to save money. Maybe that's why multi-generational living is the fastest-growing household type in the UK right now. But not all reasons are financial. For some, it's a cultural norm or a chance to care for young children and elderly relatives. Join our host, Philippa Lamb, and our expert panel as they discuss the financial impact, cultural motives, and care challenges of multiple generations living under one roof. Send us a textGunfire echoes across the Kansas plains, where desperate men take cover behind a hasty barricade of battered wagons and lifeless horses. With their ammunition dangerously low and hope dwindling, the situation looks grim—until one valiant soldier boldly steps forward, ready to embark on what appears to be a suicide mission.Welcome to the gripping tale of the Battle of Little Coon Creek, set in September 1868. This extraordinary tale chronicles how Corporal Patrick "Patty" Boyle's unrivaled bravery turned the tides in what seemed like a certain death sentence for his comrades. Historian Jeff Broome unveils how a typical dispatch run between frontier forts transformed into a desperate struggle when Boyle and Corporal Leander Herron stumbled upon their fellow soldiers under fierce attack by warriors along the Santa Fe Trail. As the drama unfolds, we see Boyle make a heart-wrenching choice—handing over his weapons with the unforgettable words, "Here, boys, you want them more than I do." He then charges headfirst into enemy lines, determined to seek reinforcements. Meanwhile, the defenders are locked in a harrowing battle that stretches through the night, their ammunition dwindling to a mere twelve rounds by dawn. Just when hope is all but lost, an unexpected sight emerges on the horizon: cavalry soldiers, gallantly charging to the rescue, clad only in their white underwear, appearing like ghostly apparitions on the battlefield. What's even more captivating is what happened after the battle. Decades later, while Corporal Leander Herron was awarded the Medal of Honor for his valor, the memory of Boyle—who had tragically passed away before he could receive recognition—remains unadorned despite his incredible heroism. In his extensive research, Broome unearthed a rare gem: a 1930 radio interview featuring the then 85-year-old Leander Herron sharing his vivid memories of that fateful night, connecting us to this often-overlooked chapter of frontier history. This tale is more than just a recounting of a military skirmish; it delves into the profound themes of sacrifice, duty, and the complex nature of heroism through the ages. For enthusiasts of the American frontier, military history, or tales of remarkable courage, Patty Boyle's midnight ride is a powerful testament to the extraordinary individuals whose stories have shaped the West.Listen, share, and subscribe to our podcast for more hidden gems from America's frontier past—where everyday heroes made history through remarkable acts of bravery.Support the showIf you'd like to buy one or more of our fully illustrated dime novel publications, you can click the link I've included. Between Two Worlds: How Broken Treaties Sparked the Southern Plains Conflict

Wild West Podcast

Send us a textThe violent clashes that erupted across the Kansas frontier in 1868 have often been shrouded in overly simplistic narratives. Historian Dr. Jeff Broome courageously challenges these conventional interpretations, revealing the intricate realities that drove Southern Plains tribes to warfare against white settlers.Through his remarkable research into Indian depredation claims—sworn testimonies encompassing nearly 800 storage feet at the National Archives—Broome uncovers perspectives that have long been overlooked. "Here is a hidden voice of these settlers," he explains, shedding light on the experiences of frontier families intertwined in the conflict. The roots of violence run deeper than commonly perceived. The Cheyenne migrated from Minnesota centuries ago, displacing other tribes and asserting their dominance over the Central Plains. Yet by 1868, their control had lasted merely two generations, while a series of treaties had drastically reduced their lands by approximately 15 times. The tipping point arrived as settlers disrupted the buffalo migrations essential to the Cheyenne's survival. Most revealing is Dr. Broome's evidence regarding Chief Black Kettle, who was traditionally viewed as a steadfast peace advocate. Settler accounts suggest he "played both sides"—cultivating relationships with military authorities while supporting war preparations. Although he did not directly participate in raids, his role appears more intricate than previously recognized. The August 1868 raids commenced along Spillman Creek, where newly arrived homesteaders suddenly became vulnerable on isolated claims. With no established towns or newspapers in the area, ascertaining exact casualty numbers remains challenging, though Governor Crawford estimated "upwards of 40 settlers" killed.By delving into these untapped primary sources, Broome helps us grasp that the violence in 1868 resulted from a potent combination of diminishing resources, broken promises, tribal dynamics, and government shortfalls—a nuanced perspective vital for anyone striving to comprehend this pivotal moment in American frontier history.Would you be ready to explore more? The Mandela Effect, named by paranormal researcher Fiona Broome in 2010, refers to collective false memories where groups misremember events or details, like Nelson Mandela dying in the 1980s (he died in 2013). Psychological studies, such as Loftus and Palmer's 1974 experiments, demonstrate how language can distort memories, while Broome suggests alternate realities or timeline shifts as causes, though these lack scientific support. Examples include misremembering the Berenstain Bears as “Berenstein,” Monopoly's Rich Uncle Pennybags with a monocle, or Darth Vader saying “Luke, I am your father” instead of “No, I am your father.” Historical cases involve myths like Columbus discovering the Americas first or Vikings wearing horned helmets. The International Mandela Effect Conference (IMEC) explores quantum theory connections, but psychological factors like memory fallibility and social influence are more accepted. While the phenomenon sparks curiosity about human memory, it can also foster distrust in reality, fuel conspiracies, and highlight cognitive fragility, potentially undermining shared historical truths.   Sources: International Mandela Effect Conference | quantum physics | 322 E Main St, Branford, CT 06405, USA. This week, we dove into the aftermath of the NBA Draft and what the Philadelphia 76ers' front office did with their picks. How will their two draft picks affect the future of the team? Austin Krell from OnPattison.com joined us for some great analysis and a discussion about the future of the Sixers' draft picks and how this offseason may look. It was a fantastic discussion! But first, the guys dove into some Listener Feedback about former Philadelphia Phillie Eddie Waitkus who was murdered decades ago by a stalker, and also ourPhilly sports history story from a few weeks ago about Russian hockey. (Approx. 4:55)From there, they discussed what the Phillies may do before the trade deadline that is approaching, and if Max Kepler should be optioned to AAA Lehigh Valley to allow talent such as Justin Crawford an opportunity to prove himself. (Approx. 9:50)The guys also talked about the one national sports personality that they have a love/hate relationship with. (Approx. 22:35)Philadelphia is finally getting a WNBA team, which the guys discussed as well. (Approx. 32:40)How did the Sixers handle this year's 2025 NBA Draft as they have new talent in V.J. Edgecombe and Johni Broome? (Approx. 54:55)What the guys threw down on the Table this week was a great, in-depth discussion with Austin Krell from On Pattison as they dissected the Sixers Draft. What will the new talent bring to the team in the future? The fan base appears disappointed that they're “running it back with old talent.” Losing Guerschon Yabusele to the New York Knicks. How will Eric Gordon's re-signing impact the team this year?  All of this and much more this week on the Table! Warning: This episode contains mature themes and is not suitable for young ears.In today's powerful & raw episode, we're joined by Josh Broome, a man whose life journey is nothing short of miraculous. From a childhood marked by fatherlessness and a desperate search for identity, to the dark spiral of the porn industry, to a radical transformation through the grace of Jesus Christ—Josh's story will leave you speechless, inspired, & filled with hope.Josh was born to a teenage mother and grew up without a consistent father figure, always feeling like he needed to prove his worth. After moving to LA to pursue acting, he was pulled into the porn industry after a single video destroyed his mainstream career. Over time, he starred in over 1,000 adult films, made over $1 million, and even won an award for Performer of the Year. Yet despite his “success,” he battled crippling depression, identity loss, and suicidal thoughts. In 2013, at his lowest moment, a simple conversation altered the course of his life. Josh walked away from porn, returned home, became a Christian, and slowly began rebuilding. In 2022, he graduated from Liberty University, and today he is the Executive Director of Walkworthy with the AACC, a husband of 9 years, a father of 4 boys, and a leading voice against pornography and for men's identity in Christ. In this episode, we don't dive deep into the explicit details of the porn industry—we focus on something far more important: what led him there and how grace brought him out. We explore the loss and recovery of identity, the restoration process through Jesus, and the truth about how pornography damages both those in it and those who consume it.
