While the polls in Israel have been relatively stagnant, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s personal standing has faltered. “The minute that Netanyahu's stock seems weak, people will start selling it, and that has begun to happen,” said Haaretz columnist Joshua Leifer, speaking on the Haaretz Podcast. Joining Leifer on the podcast, Haaretz correspondent Linda Dayan observed that in her conversations with mainstream Israelis who “don’t identify as leftists,” they see a real alternative leader in challenger Gadi Eisenkot. “People have said of Netanyahu in the past that there's no one who can replace him, who has the experience and the gravitas that we need. Now, for the first time in a very long time, people are saying it looks like there's someone who can actually do it.” The two panelists joined host Allison Kaplan Sommer to discuss the debut of new right-wing parties who eschew Netanyahu and their “machinations” attempting to engineer a government coalition that would include the anti-Netanyahu center-right – while excluding Yair Golan’s Democrats Party, and, of course the Arab parties. "There is maybe a hope or a fantasy of finding some way of creating a government that excludes Yair Golan and the Democrats, and that closes the door definitively on having a potential Arab party in the coalition,” said Leifer, referring to the right’s growing fear of the prospect of an Eisenkot-led government that includes Mansour Abbas’ United Arab List. The trove includes thousands of additional pages of material related to investigations of Epstein, including a 2020 email from a prosecutor that contains new detail about Trump’s trips on Epstein’s private jet in the 1990s, which the president has said never took place. There are also fresh details on Epstein’s relationships with financial firms and figures.2) The US Supreme Court has refused to let President Trump start deploying National Guard troops in Chicago, dealing a setback to his drive to use the military in liberal cities across the country. Rejecting a Trump request in a 6-3 decision, the court on Tuesday left in force a judge’s ruling that has blocked the deployment since Oct. 9. The president wanted to use hundreds of troops to aid immigration enforcement in the third-largest US city. The court said the legal provision Trump sought to invoke probably doesn’t permit deployment of the National Guard in situations where the president wouldn’t have authority to send in active-duty military. The court said that under federal law, the president can deploy the armed forces to help execute the laws only in “exceptional” circumstances.3) A federal judge says the Trump administration can move ahead with a $100,000 fee on new H-1B visa applications, providing a setback for US technology companies that rely on hiring skilled foreign workers. US District Judge Beryl Howell said in a ruling Tuesday that President Trump’s move to radically increase the cost of the popular visa is lawful. The decision provides a boost to the administration’s campaign to restrict immigration and push demand for US workers. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce, which sued to block the proposal, can appeal. She shared how her husband, who is in video and audio production, is in an industry where AI advances are so fast that “some of the jobs are literally being removed.” It's not a far-off-in-the-future concept.She also mentioned a friend, a SaaS founder, who had to “fire a third of their developer workforce because now AI can do all those things.” This is the stark reality that Aya is grappling with. It's exciting and empowering, but it's also “a little bit interesting and scary at the same time.” She's looking at her daughter and genuinely wondering what the job market will even look like when she's of working age.Are We Forgetting How to Think? The Risk of Over-RelianceThis led us to a critical point. Aya voiced a worry I share, that as we rely more on technology, we're losing some of our “essential skills.” She had this brilliant anecdote about the days of MapQuest, when we “used to print out directions” and follow them. Now, she half-joked, “if I don't have my phone, I am lost,” even in a familiar place. We're losing the “grinding through the pain of learning.”The danger is that we're outsourcing our thinking. Kids can just go to ChatGPT for answers. But what happens to the human process of discernment? Of asking, “I need to know, is this true? I don't want somebody else making that decision for me.” Aya fears that “particular skill of discernment is being removed,” and that's a profound risk when AI can “hallucinate” and make things up.A “Big Step Back”: Why Human Skills are More Vital Than EverSo, what's the solution? Aya believes we “need to take... a big step back” and re-learn the basics. She made this powerful statement: “we overestimate the value of AI and underestimate the value of human, human skill and capability.” We're so focused on what AI can do that we're forgetting what we must do.For Aya, the skills that will matter most in the age of AI aren't technical; they're deeply human. She identified emotional intelligence, resilience, and adaptability as the new essentials.
