POPULARITY
In Episode 83 of the Mr. Wine Guy Podcast I had the privilege of republishing my interview with Steven Kent Mirassou, a 6th generation winemaker who's family has been making wines for a little over 165 years and a guy who's family has pioneered the wine industry! In this episode Steven talks about the viticultural excellence of Livermore Valley when considering weather, soils, sunshine and wind and how, when he originally got into the wine business back in 1996 he wanted to make 1 great wine from Livermore Valley, not just to be another guy making wine, but to stretch the envelope of people's recognition of the appellation they were in. Steven talks about his favorite varietal being Cabernet Franc and how he thinks this varietal is the sexiest grape, describing it as sort of leaving this tension in the mouth while being very acid-driven, running under both generous fruit and an herbal mix. Steven talks about Steven Kent Winery, Lineage Wine Company, and Rag Bag Wine Works and the privilege it is to be making these wines alongside his son Aidan, 7th generation winemaker of the Mirassou Family. Steven talks about some of his biggest inspirations in the wine industry, 2 being Claude Bobba and Brad Buehler of Wente Vineyards and how these gentlemen inspired and educated him about a better understanding of the Livermore Valley. Also mentioned were Ehren Jordan of Failla Wines, and Steve Matthiasson of Matthiasson Wines. Steven goes on to stress that it's not only people but appellations and wineries that inspire him as well; wineries such as Mount Eden Vineyards who Steven feels makes arguably the best Cabernet out of California, Ridge Vineyards, Spottswoode Estate, and appellations such as Sicily, Barolo, and Barbaresco. Steven also goes on to share his ultimate goal in the wine industry and that is to make people happy and provide an experience for them that makes their life a little better than it was before they had a glass of his wine. With that being said, Steven Kent Mirassou is truly a man whose heart goes way beyond his ability to make world class wines. Not only that, but Steven's energy in this podcast overflows with so much charisma, and so much enthusiasm, that from the first minute of this episode you know you're in for a treat. Whether you're an aspiring winemaker, or just looking for a little motivation to get you through the day, this podcast is for you! After 17 years of doing literally everything in the wine industry from farming coastal vineyards and washing barrels to running national sales and curating wine lists, Matt & Audra have ventured on to a delicious new journey called Newfound. Find the full show notes here. Having a proclivity for the tactile and tangible work of farming a vineyard, the couple purchased property in the Sierra Foothills of El Dorado County near the town of Placerville to plant their 40-acre ranch to vines. Matt fell in love with farming after Ehren Jordan, of Failla Wines, presented him with the opportunity to take over the farming of his Cazadero vineyard on the extreme Sonoma Coast. Ever since, Matt has been yearning to get back to that sort of lifestyle on his own terms. Matt’s winemaking approach is minimalistic. He’s moved by wines that contain a naturally rugged edge and is in a constant pursuit of pushing his winemaking limits. As it relates to his own wines, he’s firmly guided by the belief that less is always more. With a focus on “fringe” varietals such as Semillon from Yountville, Carignan from Redwood Valley, and Counoise, Grenache, and Mourvedre from Mt. Veeder, the Naumanns are in pursuit of a dream to become first generation grape growers and wine producers in California. In Episode 60 of the Mr. Wine Guy Podcast I had the opportunity to sit down with Paul Colantuoni, Winemaker for Rocca Family Vineyards out of Napa Valley, CA. In this episode Paul shares his love and passion for Old World wines and how fortunate he was to start his career in some of the most incredible wine regions in the world such as Tuscany and Chateauneuf-du-Pape. Paul talks about what it was like to work for Bruce and Barbera Neyers at Neyers Vineyards in Pritchard Hill and the privilege it was to work alongside legendary winemaker Ehren Jordan. Of course Paul shares the story of Rocca Vineyards and what it's like to work for Dr. Eric Grigsby and Mary Rocca who founded Rocca back in 1995. Paul goes on to share what it was like to take over as Head Winemaker in 2008 from Celia Welch and how Celia put Rocca on the map back in 2002 with her Grigsby Cabernet which scored first place in both US and French blind tastings. These are just a few of the things you're going to get to hear in this podcast but I think the one thing you'll appreciate more than anything is Paul's humble personality and his appreciation for everyone who has been an intrical part in getting him to where he is today. In today's episode, you have the privilege of hearing from a 6th generation winemaker whose family has been making wines for a little over 164 years, Steven Kent Mirassou; a guy who I feel's family pioneered the wine industry and one of the most prolific and critically acclaimed winemakers in the wine industry today. Ehren Jordan is the proprietor of the Failla winery, which specializes in Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Syrah from California and now also Oregon. Ehren is also the owner of the Day wine label, working with Zinfandel. Ehren discusses his decision to work increasingly with fruit from Oregon vineyards, while comparing and contrasting those with the vineyards he is familiar with in California. He also addresses aspects of his winemaking in Oregon, in terms of technique. Reduction in wine is something that he talks about at length. Ehren also highlights his interest in working with Gamay, Savagnin, Syrah, and other grape varieties from Oregon, in addition to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. There is also a consideration for what the wine market is today within this conversation, and what the current market means for both the production and sales possibilities for wines from both Oregon and California. Day, which is Ehren's Zinfandel project, is also discussed. This episode is sponsored by: New York Harvest 2018 VKnow
