What is a GSM blend and why is it called a Rhone Blend? The G, S and M stand for Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvedre. The Rhone Valley is the original home of GSM blends and of course the reason why it is sometimes referred to as a Rhone Blend. The Rhone Valley has two parts: the Northern Rhone Valley is known for its steep-sloping vineyards, where Syrah is produced. The Southern Rhone is a much larger region and lacks the steep slopes of the north. This is where the GSM blends are produced. Probably the most famous area in the Southern Rhone is Chateauneuf-du-Pape. Wine Folly says these wines will have more red fruit flavors with notes of herbs. While, GSM blends from California or Australia will have darker fruits with notes of clove.Tonight, we are enjoying two GSM Blended wines including:2019 Delas Freres Cotes du Rhone Saint-Esprit purchased at Costco for $13. It has delicate tannins which is unique for the Côtes-du-Rhône appellation. The nose is classic syrah, with berry fruit, violet and licorice.2018 Skylark Wine Company Red Belly Rhone Blend. This wine was purchased from Wine Styles for $17. It is juicy and creamy black fruits plum, blackberry and crushed cherry fruit coat the entire palate, with intricately woven tannins. We scored both wines a 3 out of 5. Denise would buy both again. I would pass on both. Next week we will explore the differences between Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, and Chenin Blanc.

It's another addition to the "Alternatives to a Fave" series! This time: Grenache/Garnacha. As an extension of the Grape Mini-series, we come up with lists of wines that lovers of a specific grape can try as alternatives. Grenache/Garnacha comes in many different forms -- as a juicy, cherry-berry standalone grape in Spain, as lighter blender in the Rhône and Rioja, in rosé and fortified wines, and as full, serious wine in places like Priorat (Spain), Châteauneuf-du-Pape (France), and Australia, where old vines make very intense wines. Photo: Grenache grapes in California. Credit: Getty Images via Canva This one was a challenge, but we came up with a good list of ideas and most won't burn a hole in your wallet! This show focuses only on the red wines  (not rosé or sweet wines) and our list includes everything from Zinfandel to Nero d'Avola, to Valpolicella and Alentejo blends (Portugal), on the lighter side to Syrah, Amarone, and Aglianico on the heavy side.   We hope, as usual, that this show opens some new doors and gives you new ideas of wines to add to your repertoire!    Full show notes are on Patreon. Become a member today! www.patreon.com/winefornormalpeople   _______________________________________________________________ Wine Access  is my go-to source for the best selection of interesting, outstanding quality wines you can't find locally. This episode is sponsored by Stoke Wines. https://stokewines.au/ My guest for this episode is Jason Haas. Jason is the partner and general manager of Tablas Creek Vineyard in Paso Robles California. I hope that you've heard of Tablas Creek, but if not, let me give you a short list of their environmental leadership in the wine industry. Tablas Creek was the first Regenerative Organic Certified winery in the world. They've been farming organically since their start in 1989, certified organic since 2005, and certified biodynamic since 2015. They employ a full-time shepherd to manage a year-round flock of over 250 sheep that rotationally graze their 270 acres of vineyards, as well as the woodlands around them. Their winery is 100% solar powered, and they use their wastewater to feed a native species wetland. They are leaders in reducing glass bottle weights and bringing awareness to the many downsides of heavy glass bottles, and they are pioneering alternative packaging for ultra-premium wine. And this is just a short list. We talk about all of this, as well as get into the technicalities of no-till and low-till considerations in regenerative viticulture. We talk about how Tablas Creek has brought every grape from Chateauneuf du Pape to the US through the rigorous and time consuming process of quarantining that can take over a decade… and it's likely if you've drunk a wine from the US made with a Rhone variety of grape, you can thank Tablas Creek. Behind all of this, I hope you get a sense of the timeline of the vision for this winery. It extends beyond Jason's, or any single person's lifetime. It's a vision of continual, incremental improvement, of regeneration, over centuries. It's a vision that I hope inspires the way we think about wine. https://tablascreek.com/ Support this episode by subscribing via patreon. What to Drink

Road Trip time!! We took What to Drink on the road to the Napa Valley to interview industry legends Barbara & Bruce Neyers, owners & founders of Neyers Vineyards! The married duo recounts the story of their journey into the world of wine, starting in the early 1970's in the Napa Valley. All of their wines are delicious and leave you wondering, "Am I drinking Old World (European) wines right now, or could these indeed be Californian?!" The Sage Canyon Red blend is a delicious Rhône-style blend (Carignan, Mourvèdre, & Grenache) & will pair with most dishes, but we eventually singled out roast chicken because the two mentioned the perfect marriage of these two several times. What makes Neyers Sage Canyon Red special: Winemaker Daniel Brunier of Chateauneuf du Pape winery Vieux Télégraphe remarked that the Central Valley of California was not much different in temperature than the Rhone; why couldn't the Neyers' grow their favorite Rhône grapes in California? Bruce and Barbara started purchasing Carignan, Mourvèdre, & other Rhône-style grapes from Central Valley winemakers with specific instructions: 1. the grower must reduce their grape yields to prioritize quality over quantity, and 2. they had to employ Old World winemaking techniques like pigeage (stomping grapes by foot) & stem-inclusion. Bruce's wines are a perfect example that California & the 'New World' can achieve 'Old World' elegance, savoriness, and body! BONUS RECIPE: Barbara's Couscous Salad with Chicken Breast Recipe (Serves 4) INGREDIENTS: 2 cups dried couscous 2 cups cherry tomatoes, cut in half – Sweet 100 and Sungold tomatoes 1-2 Cucumbers, Persian or Armenian — peeled and sliced ¼ to 1/8-inch thick 2 chicken breasts, boned and skinless 1 cup canned chickpeas, rinsed 1/3 cup crumbled feta cheese Fresh basil torn into pieces for garnish Kosher salt and fresh ground pepper VINAIGRETTE INGREDIENTS: 1 Tablespoon minced shallot 2 Teaspoons fresh squeezed lemon juice ½ Teaspoon paprika ½ Teaspoon coriander ½ Teaspoon turmeric ½ cup extra virgin olive oil PREPARATION: Cook the chicken breasts on a grill using mesquite charcoal. Cook the couscous as directed on the package. Refrigerate the couscous if not using immediately. Combine the vinaigrette ingredients and set aside. Cut the chicken breasts in half lengthwise and then into ½-inch pieces. In a bowl combine the couscous, chicken breasts, chickpeas and vinaigrette. Season with Kosher salt and fresh ground pepper to taste. Serve the couscous with cherry tomatoes and cucumbers on top and garnish with basil and feta cheese. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/what2drink/message

Today we are bringing you a throwback (the first of several to come) to Stevie's conversation series “Wonderful Women in Wine” recorded on instalive during the pandemic. In this episode Stevie sits down with Andrea Mullineux More about today's guest Andrea developed her passion for wine at the family dinner table, growing up in San Francisco. After studying Viticulture and Oenology at UC Davis, and completing a handful of harvests in the Napa Valley, Andrea worked in Stellenbosch, and then in Chateauneuf where on the same trip, she met Chris at a wine festival in Champagne! Andrea's love for South African wine (and Chris) brought her back to South Africa where they learnt that their compatibility extended into the vineyards and cellar. In 2014 Andrea was invited to join the Cape Winemakers Guild and in 2016 she was awarded International Winemaker of the Year by Wine Enthusiast. When Andrea is not hard at work in the cellar, her creative energies flow into the kitchen where she loves cooking up a storm, glass of wine in hand. Lithe and spicy, it is a Grenache-dominant cuvée from two sites just north of the boundary of Châteauneuf-du-Pape: Maucoil and Bois Lauzon. There are small and varying percentages of Mourvedre, Cinsault and Syrah added to the Grenache each vintage.Domaine de MarcouxOfficial French records indicate that the Armenier family has been tending vines in Chateauneuf-du-Pape since the 1300's. Today, winemaker-sisters Catherine Armenier and Sophie Estevenin continue to write history with the wines of Domaine de Marcoux. In 1990, the Domaine became the first in the Chateauneuf-du-Pape to implement biodynamic farming practices. Their youngest vines are 40 to 60-years-old, and in short, the sisters do as little as possible to the harvested grapes. We cover: The complex geological history of the Rhône and all the “ingredients” that make the terroir what it is today The biggest differences between the northern and southern Rhône How climate change needs more attention from Rhône producers and how winegrowing and winemaking practices (trellising, too much destemming, the fashion of “phenolic ripeness”) have augmented the alcohol and “bigness” in many Rhone wines Irrigation and acidification and why each have their positives and negatives The grapes of the region, the diversity of those grapes ,and which will be the winners or losers in climate change We discuss some specifics of the regions: Châteauneuf-du-Pape, specifically why there are so many different styles and why some are $20 and some are $500 Crozes-Hermitage and how to find a good one (hint: Matt's book is how you find a good one**! Matt mentions the town of Gervans as a granite area. Cave de Tain has good quality wines too) We touch on Côte Rôtie, Tavel, and Rhône whites Matt gives us a great tip: IGP Collines Rhodaniennes is for Northern Rhône wines that didn't make the cut into Côte Rôtie, Condrieu or other northern appellations because the vines may be young, regulations are odd, or the harvest was plentiful and they had enough grape to be selective and put only the top grapes into the AOP wines.     To end, Matt tells us the areas he finds are highly underrated (Costieres di Nîmes, Luberon, Ventoux, Duché d'Uzès, Vacqueryas for white are mentioned) and he tells us some great tips to consider when traveling to the Rhône.     Matt's book is a thoughtful and easy to read guide to this magnificent region, so if you want to get great wines from this area, which is packed with outstanding wines, many of them underpriced, his book needs to be on your shelf. I no longer shop for Rhône wines without consulting it.   Plus, he is such an awesome human we should all want to support his work! Join me in Chateauneuf du Pape — our first episode abroad, to learn about the origins of The Nourishment Mindset. The French revere and savor food, and I respect and love this aspect of their culture.I first came to France during a college study abroad semester and instantly noticed the gorgeous, stylish and trim Parisians. There is absolutely a joie de vivre here, and for this 20 year-old a je ne sais quoi regarding food. At the time, I saw food as calories to be counted, managed and burned. (And I did plenty of that walking and running all over Paris as well as lifting the pair of 8-lb. weights I dragged along.) This culture enjoys food, spends plenty of time à la table (and not so much in the gym), and seems happier and healthier for it.In America, we call it “The French Paradox” because there's just no way a culture could enjoy delicious, rich foods and remain effortlessly petit. Gotta be something about their superior genes, right? Or the fact that they walk more than us, perhaps? WRONG.I'm grateful to have spent plenty of time in France over the last 25 years, both for pleasure and work, and I'm here to tell you there is no French paradox. Zee French “secret sauce” is fabulously simple: 1) focus on procuring and preparing real, whole, fresh foods — great ingredients; and 2) savor them in a leisurely manner à la table. There are of course other factors, such as many fewer addictive and inflammatory additives in French food. And the lack of gi-hugic pantries! Here you palate can dance during dinner and remain satiated and happy when you're done. There's no need to snack because you're nourished, and therefore no blood sugar roller coaster ride.Tune in on FavorFat.Substack.com, Apple Podcasts or Spotify to learn more. Head to the blog at Helen's Wines for this week's Cocktail Corner recipe: The Lighter Side of Mulled Wine. Wines that I am loving that I mentioned: Châteauneuf-du-Pape – My absolute favorite producer is Raya, but it's sold out. I love Chateau du Boursan as well, the balance of the fruit is magical. This Papi is so good and we have it at the shop right now! Chateau de la Font du Loup, Le Puy Rolland, Chateauneuf-du-Pape, Grenache, 2019 White Burgundy – There are literally way too many white burgundies that are my faves, but here are my top producers at the moment:  Benjamin Leroux Domaine Roulot Athenais de Beru Alice & Olivier DeMoor Hubert Lamy Château La Fleur Garderose – Obsessed with these wines from Bordeaux, they are using minimal intervention and the wines are unfiltered magic. Also, they will definitely entice a classic Bordeaux drinker as well! Sadly, we are sold out of this wine at the shop, but you might be able to find some bottles online!  Visit Helen's Wines for more information.   Hosted and Executive Produced by Helen Johannesen. Welcome to episode 1100, in which host Polly Hammond interviews Nicole Rolet, this week on Uncorked. This week, we are joined by the lovely and talented Nicole Rolet, CEO and driving force behind Chene Bleu. We forego wine-talk and instead jump directly into the blood, sweat, and tears of building a modern luxury brand. From solving spreadsheets and finding the right partners, to acting strategically and overcoming fear of rejection, we're talking about the non-obvious demands (and rewards!) of our industry. Let's get into it. More about today's guest: Nicole Rolet Nicole left her career in International finance and David Rockefeller's geopolitical think tanks, to join her husband Xavier and his family in the Rhone to restore a historical vineyard, derelict but magnificently wild, and its abandoned Medieval prior – a hidden gem in the heart of a UNESCO biosphere. Increasingly convinced of the site's exciting potential to produce Grand Cru-quality wine, she studied at WSET then UC Davis, and called upon her inner entrepreneur to transform this medieval Sleeping Beauty into a cutting-edge wine estate. Chêne Bleu wines were launched in 2010 to critical acclaim. She remains deeply committed to reconciling business success, social responsibility, ethical and sustainable practices, pushing the boundaries of sustainability. Knighted as Chevalier de Tastevin in Burgundy and the Echansonnerie in Chateauneuf-du-Pape, she co-founded the International Grenache Symposium and Association in 2010, then a wine school, and founded FM4FW in 2017. She's an advisor to New Zealand Trade & Enterprise, host of Uncorked with the Italian Wine Podcast, cohost of the Real Business of Wine with Robert Joseph, and, occasionally, a knitter. MJ's guest today is esteemed Châteauneuf-du-Pape vigneron and winemaker, Isabel Ferrando! Isabel has been cultivating vines and making wine in Chateauneuf-du-Pape for 18 years. Her wines have been dubbed by critics as “some of the most profound wines on the planet” (Jeb Dunnuck). Drawing inspiration from the Burgundian tradition of single vineyards, Isabel produced three different cuvées from Saint Prefert's estates from 2003 to 2019: Classique, Réserve Auguste Favier and Collection Charles Giraud. In this episode, MJ and Isabel discuss how Isabel went from working for a bank to making wine in her own vineyard in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Isabel shares details of her organic and biodynamic vineyard practices, her revolutionary new approach to making wine in a glass vat, and her daughter's recent decision to follow in Isabel's footsteps.A huge thank you to Isabel Ferrando! In this episode of Wine and Dime we welcome back our very own Rooted Planning Group Financial Planner Kerrie Beene. Kerrie is back to help us continue the theme of January of “Getting Organized”. Kerrie is a bit of an expert on spending plans, so, she is the perfect guest to have on this weeks episode. She shares her insights on her own spending plans, and what it takes to build one for your family. Don't forget to rate and subscribe and thank you for listening!! KERRIE BEENE - CFP®FINANCIAL PLANNERA little bit about Kerrie Beene, CFP®… My own personal financial journey has taught me that while they're important, life is more than numbers. Finding joy in the journey towards personal goals is key. A smart plan with a lot of heart goes a long way to keeping daily financial decisions in line with your long term goals. I graduated from Southeastern Oklahoma State University with a degree in Business Administration  and hold a certificate in Financial Planning from Wake Forest University.  I began my career in financial planning by starting my own company, Beene Financial Planning. Having the desire to work as a team, I then joined Irvine Wealth Planning Strategies.  My roots in Southeast Oklahoma have given me great insight on the need for financial planning that is not just investment focused, but also focused on all the other financial planning decisions.  I enjoy, and work best, with those who are ready to take control of their finances and use their money to fulfill their goals and dreams. In November of 2016 I sat for the CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ designation, and in May of 2019 successfully completed my experience requirements. I am now the Director of Educational Services for Rooted Planning Group. What does that mean? In addition to working as a co-planner, I also focus on: College Pre-Planning: Late stage (Freshman - Senior) college planning, seeking scholarships, estimating expected family contribution, assistance with FAFSA and asset utilization.  Funding of education vehicles (i.e. 529 plans) and utilization recommendations.  We have set the price for this service at $1,000.
College Graduate Planning: This is for the new graduate.  We sit down with them to discuss budgeting, how to negotiate salary, understand employee benefits and education benefits, review of student loans and other debt, savings opportunities and large purchase planning.  We have set the price for this service at $299.
We also want to continue developing the employer education services, as well as getting financial education into the schools. Grenache (Garnacha) WineGrenache (Garnacha) is a red-wine grape grown extensively in France, Spain, Australia and the United States. It is particularly versatile both in the vineyard and the winery, which may explain why it is one of the most widely distributed grapes in the world. Grenache is the French (and most internationally recognized) name for the grape, but it has a number of synonyms. In Spain, where it is one of the country's flagship varieties, it is known as Garnacha, and on the island of Sardinia it has been known for centuries as Cannonau. Some believe that the grape originated in Sardinia, and was taken back to Spain by the Aragonese, who occupied the island in the 14th Century. Gnarly old Barossa Grenache vines ©Turkey Flat Vineyards In France, Grenache is most widely planted in the southern Rhone Valley and throughout both Provence and Languedoc-Roussillon. It is most commonly found alongside Syrah and Mourvedre in the classic Southern Rhone Blend (notably in Cotes du Rhone wines), and is the main grape variety in Chateauneuf-du-Pape. Grenache's versatility provides winemakers with all sorts of possibilities. Grenache-based rosé is one of southern France's signature wine styles. The variety is common...
